Tea party protesters say it's not too late to block health bill

Updated 4:47 p.m.
By Sandhya Somashekhar
Hundreds of conservative "tea party" activists gathered Tuesday outside the U.S. Capitol to protest health-care legislation whose fate will be decided by the House this week, urging Congress to "kill the bill."

Carrying signs condemning "Obamacare" and "socialized health-care," they cheered a litany of speakers who insisted it is not too late to stop the bill, which they say has been rammed through against the will of a majority of Americans. Some wore suits as they prepared to enter the Capitol and confront their members of Congress, hoping to capture the encounters on video and post them online.

Leaders of the disparate tea party groups this week are targeting dozens of fiscally conservative or anti-abortion House members, whom they believe could be persuaded to reject the bill. The aim, according to organizers of the rally, is to inundate these members with telephone calls and e-mails and visit them in person to "make sure that each of these ... members is reminded every day that if they fail to vote against Obamacare, they will be voted out of office in November."

The morning rally took place near the statue of Robert A. Taft, a Republican senator from Ohio who led conservative opposition to the New Deal. Organizers were unable to secure a permit to install a stage, so someone dragged a park bench into the middle of the throng so speakers could be better viewed by protesters.

About a dozen speakers ranging from congressmen to doctors lauded the efforts of tea party sympathizers, whose protests have helped boost opposition to President Obama's effort to remake the nation's health-care system. Many aimed their ire at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, characterizing her expressed preference for avoiding a regular vote on the health-care bill as treasonous.

Speakers insisted that a concerted effort by activists can thwart the bill, despite optimistic statements by Democrats who aim to send it to Obama's desk by the end of the weekend.

"So here we are. We are in the bottom of the ninth. We've won every inning so far, so that should feel pretty good," said Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.). "Stand strong, do your job and we will win by Sunday."

Bachmann's remarks and those by others were greeted with cheers, but no speaker was greeted with more enthusiasm than Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), whose "You lie!" outburst during the president's State of the Union address has made him a hero to many Obama detractors.

"We want health-care reform, not a government takeover," Wilson told the crowd to raucous applause. "It's not too late. The American people have, and can, make a difference and so thank you for what you've done."

The comments echoed the fear and frustration expressed by those in attendance, including some from as far away as New York and Michigan. Many in the crowd took the day off work in order to participate in this week's events, which movement leaders have dubbed "Take the Town Halls to D.C."

Bill and Miriam Murphy drove from Morristown, N.J., on a few days' notice, leaving behind the pizzeria and call center they own. Rather than expanding health insurance to all 50 of their employees, as they fear the bill will require, they will instead outsource the call-center work to India, they said.

"Everything is backwards," said Miriam Murphy, 44. "Every single thing this government has touched as been against the traditions of this country."

Diane Gardner, a retired bank employee, hired a bus along with about 50 like-minded New York state residents to attend this week's events. The group left home around midnight to get to Washington in time, she said.

"We want the voices of the people to be heard. They're just jamming this down our throats," she said.

The tea party people voluntarily came from many states to let congress know the bill is bad for the country.

I was there yesterday - count thousands, from Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, Florida, Oklahoma, New Jersey, New York. West Virginia, more.

The press reports on the actions of a stupid few and ignores the thousands who know the truth.

Yes, there are many older people. That's because they were educated with the real history of the country, They care for the country, for their children, grandchildren, friends and family.

There were also just as many younger Americans. One very young child held up their sign: "Where's My Free Pony?".

Remember the Olympic skater who lost the gold medal because of his coach? The dem leadership has gotten in front of congress and is telling them to change lanes at the end.

The average american isn't stupid, but they are also do not know what's going on. Their news is filtered by the narcissistic press and entertainers, entities that are failing the country.

So Degan, from your past comment we can conclude that Liberals like yourself are racist. According to your standard, if a black person thinks conservatively, they are a house boy or Uncle Tom. You said it massah Degan. By your own admission you are a Liberal RACIST! If your black person does not speak as you want him to speak he becomes a house boy in your twisted philosophy.

Liberal Socialists like Tom Degan are the Neville Chamberlains of our time. The Tom Degans of this world are obtuse followers of the Lenins and Stalins and Hitlers of our past. As always they spout good intentions that generally speaking, no one really disagrees with in principal, while they guide society once again into world wide Socialist, Fascist, Marxist, Leninist, Stalinist, Hitleresque, Totalitarianism. Liberal Fascists like Tom will be the death of all peace. AGAIN!!! They are the same socialists that brought Hitler, Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini, Mao and many others to power. As is always the case though, the Tom Degans of this world will also be the first disillusioned pansy socialists who will cry save us from these mean dictators like Chavez & Putin. They lied, boo hoo. They said they would be good putty-tats. Save us America. Oops! I forgot, even America is no longer free. It has been taken over by dictators called Liberals. Oh and by the way they are best chums with the likes of Chavez & Castro so don't expect any help from them. How do Liberals even call themselves Americans these days? Everything they seem to want is destroying our country. I used to just disagree with them (and I’ve never made more than 35K per year in my life) but I am beginning to think of them as the enemy from within. They literally seem to HATE our great country. Is this the way blue collar America sees it anymore. Hate everything this country has stood for, going on hundreds of years? It defies logic. As if they are enemy moles trying to bring down our economy, our health care system and our education system. They have nearly succeeded already. Honestly I think the Obama/Pelosi/Reid DNC are purposefully trying to MAKE our economy tank so they can implement the failed European model but they just haven’t figured out how to blame the GOP for it. They want to force failure, blame the GOP and then rescue us with their Socialism. Just remember though oh Unions of old, as in all situations in the past like Stalin and Hitler, when you have finally succeeded in tricking the country into giving the commies complete power, and finally figure out they don’t give a r*t’s a*s about you, then the unions and Liberal activist groups (who don’t go along) will be the first overboard. Wait and see. You Liberal sheep who realized how obtuse you have been will now be the first under the bus unless you COOPERATE! Why? Because your big mouths will no longer be a positive for them. It amazes me how millions of union members pay money in weekly to stick it to themselves. Your own leadership is destroying your work pool and you double down. America will fail until Americans dump these economy destroying unions and the commie Liberals they support. Good luck America. Its do or die time. Choose Socialism or reject it but don’t whine once you’ve allowed it for there will no longer be any free people left to hear your cries and come to your aid.

Having fought communist and fascist attempts to crush my Constitution, I am not about to stop now. If Obamcide is passed I will not obey and if taxed I will not pay. Consider me a conscientious objector on the grounds that this federal power grab violates my religion and my Constitution. Go ahead and reserve my jail cell now, Mr. Axlerod, for I shall live free or die.

Would you like a little cyanide with your tea?

It's not the ones who are "catapulting the propaganda" that are disconnected from reality - they know damned well what they are doing - it's all those pathetic white people who are swallowing this garbage whole! And let's face some sobering truths, shall we? Other than a small handful of blubbering Uncle Toms, they're almost entirely white. The disconnect between reality and delusion in this country is widespread and appalling. That would partially explain the political careers of people like Jeff Sessions and Michele Bachmann. People like them are only able to advance because of the stampeding ignorance of their constituents. In the land of the brain-dead, the half-wit is king.

I only wish to understand, what kind of American citizen they are in this beautiful
land of ours-USA-?

It's the American in this world, fighting to save the lives of other-side of our world, and yet, handful of oportunist are
objecting to health care? Why-o-why?

One day your be dead, may be a fancy funeral and nothing more for you in this-
selfish world?
Why are you objecting, for good American to
have a good health-service, before they die
think again, you the health-care objectors!

I just realized today that the Republicans and the Tea Party people do not want uninsured Americans to have any health care. I guess they want you to die, or maybe they own stock in insurance companies. Well, I think that now is the time to let everyone know that you do want health care. Most of us could find ourselves unemployed and without health insurance, or perhaps a family member might develop a medical condition. How about instead of quietly dying, demand health care from our elected officials. Why are we the only first world country in the world without it? It would even make our corporations more competitive. Also, I do not accept the Republican view that we need to start over. They just want the initiative to fail, so that they can kill it after the mid-terms. I really feel that uninsured Americans need to fight for healthcare now.

I find it laughable that the "Tea Partiers" (aka Tea baggers) continue to resort to words and imagery fraught with suggestive innuendo.

Perhaps they should learn to swallow.

And for those who claiming they are "winning," it must be the kind of winning one does when one is losing.

Legislation proposed and embraced by the people in spite of Republican opposition. (Loss)

Reform to be centerpiece of President's early term agenda. (Loss)

Three bills written in House and advanced from committees responsible for health care. (Loss X 3)

Two bills written in Senate and advanced from committees responsible in Senate. (Loss X 2)

House bills consolidated, debated and passed in House. (Loss)

Senate bills consolidated, debated and passed out of Senate. (Loss)

President presents his "markup" of consolidated House and Senate bills. (Loss)

House passage of Senate version of bill. (Pending)

Reconciled bill with fixes from House, Senate and President (Pending)

Signed into law by President Obama (Pending)

Right now, I have the score at 10-ZIP Democrats. Those of you scoring at home may have a slightly higher score.

Best performance by a Party without a conscience.... the Republicans. Best performance by an astro-turfed, tea bag dunking lunatics... the Tea Party Patriots.

Yes, where is the socialism? Passing laws to regulate business is socialism? Ok... requiring auto makers to install airbags in cars, Socialism! Requiring drug makers to ensure their products are safe and tested before going to market, Socialism! Sarbanes-Oxley? Socialism! EPA clear air and water standards? Socialism!

I think it's great that people exercise their freedom to petition the government, complain, protest, advocate, etc, but a lot of these people could have tried to get some learnin' during all that time back home in their La-Z-Boys.

Re the comment that terminating 50 jobs will raise taxes, I believe that is exactly the point the small business owner is making. Most congress members have a very limited background in capitalism, especially small businesses. Only taxes in some form or other will pay for the out-of-control debt the U.S. has accured/is accuring. When you pay over 30 per cent of your income for debt interest, you're in trouble; when the government pays over 30 per cent for debt interest, the U.S. is in trouble, i.e. you and I.

I would be interested in their term "socialism" in reference to this bill. Where is all the government control? Where is the socialism?

You want a million man march? We'll bring you one. Today's "Surge" barely even merited the "s" at the end of "hundreds". You won't be claiming 100,000 at this one. Your program that was supposed to last until 6 OPM had folded up and gone home by noon. Looks like teabags have a mighty short shelf life!

Actually, the most prominent group today was the LaRouchies, and they were doing a good business with their handouts. I wonder how many of you were actually reading them? Among other things, they insisted that the only way to prevent a global meltdown is through global:

1) Universal cheap credit at interest rates less than 2% (not exactly your free-market approach, is it? more like the Quran's admonition not to charge usury!)

2) Greatly expanded system of general health care! (Gee, that one speaks for itself, don't it?)

I had a hell of a great time at your Surge. I'll be sure to come back for your Taxgiving Day reprise and bring all my friends! Best show in town. Too bad for y'all we'll already have a signed bill by then.

Fear...that's what's winning in all this. From every blogger who's posted an opinion, to the Tea Partiers, and Glenn Beck, and the left, the right...we are operating out of fear and ignorance of something we don't really think about it until we need it. The couple thinks it needs to move its call center to India..it fears it must get healthcare for it's employees, it's a fear that it's 'socialist medicine', a fear that it's 'government takeover'. Personally, the bill I read didn't seem to indicate it, but fear of the unknown, or the 'don't want' has propelled us into this. Civil rights had the same thing when it was introduced and passed in 1964. To be honest, I don't know, but I am willing to give something a try...if it doesn't work, you repeal it. If it does, you know you took a new step and it paid off...

I have a few suggestions for the Tea Partiers. First of all, get a dictionary. So far, I've read that Obama is a fool, a socialist and a Marxist -- learn what the words mean. Another thing I would suggest is that they are being manipulated by a crowd of racists who feel nothing but disdain for the President -- people who want "their" country back. Another thing -- were they all Rip Van Winkle during W's spend-like-crazy years?

He gave them government run healthcare.

Don't these people have jobs?

Of course they do and don't; they do because morelikely they are paid by the Insurance Cos to scream bloody murder as they did when Bush invaded Iraq right? and they don't because all they know is to drink tea during the day and booze during the night.Unamerican to provide health care for Americans? I am sure they really believe it since they have the deepest conviction that they should not paid taxes and those who do should only do it to benefit the likes of Halliburton and the arms merchants.

What's funny is the Dems keep failing to take this movement seriously or see how angry most Americans are becoming over the antics of the far left. It's going to be a shock to them.
---------------------------------------------

I just saw an aerial shot of the group. I'd be surprised if the count comes in at more than 600 people, and yet you think this represents most Americans? This is the largest legislation ever passed and is as landmark as a program as Social Security or Medicare (something you righties scream bloody murder about anytime we want to change it), and you can't even get 1000 people to show up? This is it, the past 14 months has come down to these couple of days and you can only get 600 people to complain?

250,000 gay folks turn out yearly for the DC Gay Pride parade. Its funny how you think 600 people represent all of America, but that 250,000 people don't.

Here is a hint, take it to heart. Get over yourself. You aren't anywhere near as important as you think you are.

Latest news, when Obama pointed out a "fainter" at his event yesterday, it was really the cops removing an anti-Obama guy. That Statist sob just vamped a little till his SEIU thugs wrestled the guy to the ground. Freedom of speech? Not in Obama's Soviet-style republic. Lord I hate that Marxist a**hole.

Let me get this straight.....The House DemocRATS don't have the votes to pass this smelly pile of dung with a 51 vote majority, so now they are going to resort to trickery, smarmy "Slaughter House" Rules by "deeming" the Bill as "Passed" even though these cowardly village idiots will not put their names on this stinking Bill. They are SO finished!! This is the most CORRUPT administration and Congress in the history of our nation. Vote ALL these creeps OUT in 2010, 2012 and on until the stench is no longer wafting throughout the Halls of Congress!!!

If the bill is a sell-out to insurance and pharmaceutical companies, that's because Republicans, pushed along by "tea partiers," refused to go along with even just a simple public option that would have brought big business some realistic competition.

Now what we have in the bill is a trade-off for the insurance industry--millions of new customers in exchange for being required to treat people fairly. While that's far weaker than I'd like to see, it's a big start toward ensuring that we the American people are guaranteed access to what should and could be (but isn't by a long shot) the best health care in the world.

Pass the bill. We the people need it. In 25 years we'll look back on passing this bill as a fundamental building block in America's renewed prosperity.

I remember a scene in an old Jimmy Cagney movie where Jimmy played a bootlegging gangster. In this scene he coerces a speakeasy owner to buy his brand of berr despite its objectionable taste by grabing the bartender, slapping him and threatening him with the words, " You'll take what I give you and you'll like it". It looks like the Dems are trying o imitate Jimmy Cagney.
"Etate c'est moi" said the Sun King , Louis XIV. " I am the state". I gues Barrack Hussein Obama is now the socialist Sun King, the infallible, enlightened philosopher king that Plato ppredicted in The Republic ?
Sun Yat Sen and Vladimir Lenin would be proud of him. The politiburo, Bolshevik, Vanguard of the Revolution, now controlling who gets healed or dies, via Government Health Care. Government control of who gets to use fuel for heating, travel or industry via Cap and Trade. How soon till a brown shirt cadre, Red Guard brigades or a cheka-KGB to decide who lives and dies? How soon till he he is declared to be a god. How soon till we must either take his name or mark since we will not be able to buy or sel until we take it?

The original Tea Party had names and faces to carry the message through. They took the risks, they got elected. It was a massive undertaking. If this Tea Party wants to succeed, and I believe it should, we need to assign faces to it. Otherwise, the momentum of the movement has no where to focus.

Thank you Tea Party for fighting for our Freedom and Liberty. Thank you for helping the Taxpayers and alerting us "too busy to make ends-meet without healthcare" lower middleclass taxpayers about Obama HealthCare bill, Cap & Trade and Illegal Alien Amnesty plan.

We struggle as it is, and Obama is making it more difficult for us and my children.

I "hope" that we will find a way to "change" this obvious train-wreck disaster that Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Clinton and Rahm, Axlerod & Gibbs are leading our beloved country into. I am sure tired of "Bush" blames, above-the-law tactics, they are doing worst ever job to the "taxpayer citizens".

We need HealthCare Reform to lower costs and they will give us mandatory "health" taxes and ill formed healthcare bill that costs too much and not lower costs of healthcare but increases taxes and our nation's debt.

These people have not come up with solutions to our economic, healthcare and energy problems.... just more debt and taxes.

We cryout for jobs, they give us unemployement lines......

The Dems need Get out of our HOUSE.

Did you ever even break down the book 1984, it was about the anti-socialist version of government, it lied and called itself socialism but in truth hated socialism, no-net to help the poor, all the money filers up to the elite, perpetual war, these are all fundamentally anti-socialist. Why do you think they used phrases like "freedom is slavery" it was about screwing with the populaces mind to the point that they no longer knew what the ideas behind those words even mean. The point of the story was not what was coming with some shift in power, it was supposed to point out to you, we are already there and have been for a long time.

Try to catch a clue, gwcox2, will ya'?

This bill, besides being unconstitutional in both content and proposed procedure, is a sell-out to both the health care insurance and pharmaceuticals industries. It matters not where you sit within the polical spectrum...there is nothing there to like. Are you really that blind?

Go Tea Party!

So the teabaggers prefer people to be bled dry financially by health insurers and pharma and then left out to hang when they need a transfusion.

I assume that if the Post reports there are several hundred Tea Partiers, there is probably several thousand.

In any case, if Pelosi pulls the shinanigans she's threatening and the bill passes the number of people in the streets of America will keep the pundits busy for some time. They are about to find out how angry people really are. They need to back off and start over.

alex, Winston Smith would be proud of you. You really do love big brother. We don't, and we're not going to start. Enjoy that bullet to the brain, that's how 1984 ends you know.

Saw a video of the even. More than hundreds, my friends. But I must admit, as mad as I am, the Fall midterms offset that anger. Because there will be so many American's showing up at the polls who are ultra motivated to vote, it will be a spanking of a political party of historic proportion. Drive that baby through, Democrats. Heck, in 6 months you too can take advantage of those extended unemployment benefits you recently approved. What a deal!

Can someone please please PLEASE explain to the Tea-party people that its not socialized health care in any way! It's the definition of Facisim-Care, forcing people to buy a private good is part of classic conservative fascism you morons.

I wish we were passing socialized health care, Canadians love their socialized care polls show that they prefer what they get far more then what americans liking our system. Why? Because it works, and when there are problems like long lines, they put more money into solving the problem. The English like their system less, but still more then we like ours.

And don't give me stories of "canadians come here for health care" they checked only about 100,000 canadians have ever come to the US to get medical treatment thats less than 1% of the population. Whereas we go over the border to canada and spend 1 billion a year on cheeper drugs illegally.
