What time is the health-care vote? And other critical questions.

Updated 10:35 p.m.
By Paul Kane
The final showdown has arrived, the House opened up for legislative business right at 1 p.m., and everybody's got two questions they want answered: Do Democrats have the votes -- and when will the vote be?

Here's a road map to the afternoon, evening and -- potentially -- nighttime ahead on Capitol Hill as President Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her leadership team try to lock down the final votes to pass the sweeping $940 billion health-care bill. The key issues:

What time is the health-care vote? (Updated 10:35 p.m.)
The most precise answer is: Some time after 10 p.m. The most optimistic scenario crafted by Democrats this morning had them moving to the big votes on the legislation around 6 p.m. But Republicans forced a series of votes on parliamentary points of order, each of which was beaten back largely on party lines, that delayed the process.

At this point, the vote on the Senate-approved legislation is not anticipated until after two hours of debate and speeches conclude after 10 p.m. The revision package of amendments to that bill (which then goes to the Senate for consideration next week) will likely see a vote around 11 p.m.

Just before 10 p.m., Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) sent out an e-mail with the schedule of votes for the remainder of the evening. The order:

1) Motion to Concur in the Senate Amendments to H.R. 3590 - Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Reps. Waxman/Levin/George Miller - Energy and Commerce/Ways and Means/Education and Labor) 15 minutes
2) Motion to Recommit H.R. 4872 15 minutes
3) Final Passage of H.R. 4872 - Reconciliation Act of 2010 (Rep. Spratt - Budget) 15 minutes
4) H.Res. 1099 - Recognizing the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima (Rep. Braley - Armed Services) Suspension bill - 5 minutes
5) H.Res. 1119 - Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that all people in the United States should participate in a moment of silence to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of members of the United States Armed Forces both at home and abroad (Rep. Peters - Armed Services) Suspension bill - 5 minutes

How many votes do the Democrats need?
The usual magic number for a bare majority in the House is 218, but that's when there are a full 435 members in the House. There are currently four vacancies, bringing the total number of members down to 431. Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) died in February, and Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii), Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) and Robert Wexler (D-Fla.) have resigned -- for a variety of different reasons -- in the last two months. Murtha, Abercrombie and Wexler voted "yes" on the House health-care bill in November, when 219 Democrats voted for the legislation.

That means there are currently 216 Democrats, the exact magic number for the bill to pass, who have previously supported the legislation.

Is 216 really the magic number?
It's worth remembering that, if Democrats pass this legislation on a 216-215 vote, Republican strategists will have a field day attacking every vulnerable Democrat as The Deciding Vote for the "government takeover" of the health-care industry.

Democrats would really like to have 217 votes or more, to save their politically vulnerable lawmakers from getting hit with those type of ads.

In 1993, then-Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, a freshman Democrat from suburban Philadelphia, famously became the deciding vote on the Clinton administration's first budget bill. Republicans jeered her in the chamber with yells of "Bye-bye, Marjorie", and then defeated her in the 1994 midterm elections.

When Rep. Betsy Markey (D-Colo.), a freshman from suburban Denver, announced her decision to switch from "no" to "yes" Thursday, the GOP campaign committee sent an e-mail alert to reporters declaring: "bye-bye, Betsy."

Do Democrats have the votes? (Updated 5:15 p.m.)

Democrats believe they crossed the 216 threshold at 4 p.m., with the unveiling of an executive order that stipulated no federal funding could go toward abortion services in the new insurance exchanges that would be created by this legislation.

Only three representatives who were previous "yes" votes have declared their opposition, and almost all of the roughly 10 votes wavering because of abortion-related concerns have lined up behind the legislation. The first big endorsement from that group was Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), a veteran anti-abortion lawmaker from Toledo who announced Sunday morning that she's backing the legislation, setting the stage for the other anti-abortion Democrats to come aboard.

In addition to shoring up these votes, eight Democrats who opposed the November legislation have come out in support of the bill. If all 431 House members attend the vote and cast their votes as expected, Democrats would appear to have 220 votes, give or take a vote or two on either side.

Do Republicans have any tricks up their sleeves?
Yes, definitely.

In the arena of delaying tactics, Republicans throughout the day can invoke motions to adjourn the chamber. Those are votes that would end up being strict party-line votes, but they would take 15 minutes or more, and they can keep offering these motions just to delay the process.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) also has special privileges that would allow him to offer nonbinding resolutions that could be voted upon immediately; Republicans offered several of these throughout the week to put Democrats on the record regarding the process for holding votes.

In addition, the top three officers of the House -- Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and Boehner -- are allowed to speak for as long as they want during the debate, so Boehner can effectively do his own version of the Senate-style filibuster of yesteryear.

Last June, during a vote on climate change legislation, Boehner spoke for more than an hour, reading large chunks of the bill.

The last GOP trick?
When the debate is concluded, there will be a few parliamentary votes before the big votes on the actual legislation. The most suspenseful of all of these will be the so-called motion to recommit.

It is effectively the one amendment that Republicans get to offer on the legislation, and in the past the MTR -- as it's known by insiders -- has been used by the minority party to do one of two things: Offer an entire alternative piece of legislation, or offer a narrow amendment that is politically poisonous for the majority.

Many are now speculating that the Republican MTR this evening will be a motion that offers the anti-abortion amendment from Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), the onetime leader of the key bloc of holdout votes. The Stupak amendment received support from 64 Democrats when the House first voted on it in November.

To avoid another showdown over the issue of abortion in the Senate next week, Democrats who previously supported the Stupak amendment would now have to vote against it -- a potentially politically dicey move.

What happens if the House passes the bill?
Then Obama will sign the Senate version of the legislation and it will become the law of the land -- regardless of the Senate's effort to pass the House-approved revisions package next week. It will be the most sweeping health-care law since Medicare, with or without the revisions package.

So is that the end?
No. It's still possible that the Senate could approve the revisions measure but in the process actually amend the bill -- and even the slightest tweak to the revisions package would force the House back into action to pass that new version of the legislation.

Today was the death of the United States of America as we know it, 1776-2010. This fraudulant userper to the white house, his majestey, the African Lying Lion, the Chimp in Chief, and his evil Minions of the Democrat Party have forced the working class of America to grab there ankels and take it up the rear weather we want this or not. Everything the founders of our great nation worked for is being taken away from us and being given to the blacks, the mexicans, the illegals, the homosexuals, the lazy and shiftless, those who flaunt God's laws and think that Man has a better idea how to behave than OUR CREATOR. Instead of bowing down to JESUS CHRIST we are forced to bow to Obama, a MINION OF SATAN! These are the end of days!!! All that is left is that we can PRAY FOR GODS MERCY that he has only been testing us and will soon intervean and restore a Godly man to the white house.

From spamwich's comments, I presume there is an underlying fear of freeloaders such as new immigrants who many are fearing will benefit disproportionately from the healthcare reforms - so in other words, hard working "real" Americans might have to pay additional taxes for the healthcare of these freeloaders who have yet to "earn" their right to subsidised healthcare.

Two points - firstly, the beneficiaries are either US citizens or they are not (even if they are "new"). If they are, then they deserve to be treated equally. Last time I checked, you do not have different classes of citizens in the US. But the main point is that the major group of beneficiaries are the underprivileged and the vast majority of those have been citizens from birth. The implication that some Americans are more equal than others is so at variance with the ideals of your wonderful Constitution. So in fact, rather than Obama's reforms being somehow UnAmerican, the Republicans need to understand more fully what being an American actually means. (Clue: It's not about the right to bear arms, duh!)

Some of the comments here from our brethren on the right are truly amazing. You know they are talking through their proverbial when they make assertions without any facts supporting their argument whatsoever - merely stating a tenet of their faith (like a form of Scientology).

"Obama is a communist", "Federal takeover", "Jobs lost", "Increase the deficit", "Lies". Hello??

As your President said so eloquently, "You are entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts". Wake up, Space Cadets!!

I am reading this from overseas...I just cannot understand the American mentality that healthcare is somehow not a universal right in a wealthy country. This is something that most other countries including those considered to be conservative accept without question.

If you live "overseas", then you do not understand immigration problems. If you did understand those problems, then you would understand the "American mentality".

TranceBunny, you are so right! The strange thing is that a certain minority of Americans, referred to sometimes as "American exceptionalists," adhere to the view that "everyone's out of step except the United States."

I am reading this from overseas and I have to say that in my humble opinion, Americans seem to live on another planet. I have researched both sides of this debate and I just cannot understand the American mentality that healthcare is somehow not a universal right in a wealthy country. This is something that most other countries including those considered to be conservative accept without question. But the arguments put forward by some bloggers here and the recurrent assertion that Obama is somehow a socialist or that this proposal is merely the Trojan Horse for a Government takeover of healthcare is so stupid it is laughable to most people outside your country.

You guys should be so thankful that you finally have a President that the rest of the world holds in high regard and admires from afar after your country had been run for 8 years by cringeworthy morons. And the sad thing is that many of you voted to put them there and apparently still seem to share their warped beliefs about the unfettered free market and the individual's obligation to be responsible for themselves without any safety net. I think more of you Americans (including numerous politicians) need to travel overseas more and try to understand a little more about Planet Earth, and your fellow passengers. Your current healthcare system sucks and anyone trying to block the current reforms, imperfect as they are, is just a Luddite.

Antonio Sosa apparently doesn't have a CLUE about the REAL bribes and tricks played by the health care industry and padding the pockets of the Republicans who refuse to voe for the new health insurance bill so they can EARN their money from the lobbyists. Lobbying is nothing othe than "legalized" bribery and should be a criminal offense. If he would turn on C-Span, he would have a better idea of what dirty tricks and games his own slimey party plays, like nasty little crooks.

This health care bill is primarily regulation of the health insurance industry in exchange for a mandate that US citizens buy health insurance. That is not a government takeover of health care and not even close to socialism much less communism.

How do we pay to subsidize those that can't afford it is the only legitimate question the GOP asks but I could ask them how they are paying for the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and against terrorism? How about how they are paying for Medicare Part D, the border fence, No Child Left Behind or the Congress' and Fed's actions to shore up the economy before Obama was even elected?

I am among those who does not enthusiastically support this bill since it does not have a public option or a Medicare buy in to compete directly with insurance companies. I do think that this bill when it is finally enacted will save more than the CBO thinks because the emergency room will not be the primary care for 32 million uninsured Americans and preventive care will be less expensive than acute care. Let's get real, the Republican's proposals would do nothing to seriously address the issues this country has with health care and their constant cry to start over is just a ploy to not pass any bill, ever.

It took way to long for this accomplishment thanks to Republicans, certain conservative Democrats and an Independent and I do not love this bill but I am extremely grateful that this colossal problem has begun to be seriously addressed.

Thank you KDTRN for your sensible and experienced response. I too am a nurse and have been deeply saddened by the healthcare decisions, and there are many on a daily basis, depriving patients of healthcare made on the basis of insurance coverage or lack of resources. Your words are more articulate and say everything and more... Thank you for speaking up and thank you to the physicians speaking up for their patients that have had worse outcomes due to delayed treatments secondary to insurance coverage and preventative care and deadly consequences or worse, long suffering declines by innocent children and elderly...all of which are more costly than prevention. Healthy productive citizens, living free of disease and injury, experience another kind of freedom... the freedom that health brings, to do and be and pursue happiness for ourselves and our families and communities...The vitriol WILL
discipate as we focus on the good that can be done... "What we resist persists"... I for one refuse to give any reponse to the ludicrous responses...I do intend to speak up for the weak, those who are poor, sick aging and in prison...and against those Corporations that have stolen the prosperity and life's energies of their workers...stealing and depriving citizens of the shared profits of their hourly, daily, yearly, and decades of sweat... and poluting the commnunities and stealing rather than harvesting and returning an equitable, reasonable amount, considering the resources withdrawn from the community... Health Insurance companies need regulation and controls just as our banks and wall street...History will repeat itself if we don't hold our institutions and corporations to the same standards and values we hold ourselves and fellow citizens...Honesty and transparency and fairness...This Bill is just the beginning of what needs to be done to heal this country. Madison said "If men were angels, we wouldn't need government..." Healthcare is a right!!!Has anyone figured out the cost of NOT treating the Healthcare needs of the 32 million uninsured...We cannot afford NOT to cover everyone!!!!

To those posters fulminating over the prospects of this legislation passing: You realize that you're always free find another country to move to, where medical services are rationed based on the "freedom" of one's ability to pay, don't you? Of course, this won't include any First World nations, but then again (sarcasm alert) wuldn't it be fun to have large lower classes to whom you can feel superior when you see how much better off you are than they are?

Re the fear that many doctors will quit practicing medicine: Given that unemployment rates in the US are still running nearly 10% (and when underemployment is included, closer to 16%-17%), I doubt that many will actually quit. For those who do, where will they find jobs in other careers that pay anywhere near what they were earning practicing medicine? They can't ALL become investment bankers or stock brokers (LOL!). Besides, supposedly so many MDs have burdensome med school loans they need to continue paying off that they can't afford to take a "principled" stand and just quit.

Both of these arguments are mere "straw men," not legitimate fears at all.

@stop_the_madness: what is Obamacare? Obamacare is NEITHER health care NOR health care reform. It's a MARXIST SCAM that would destroy our health care, our economy, our freedoms and our country.

As per the 2007 book, “Stand Up Straight: How Progressives Can Win,” written by Robert Creamer, a CONVICTED FELON and Obama’s ACORN associate, the main objective of Obamacare is only to increase the power of "progressives" (Marxists) through the “democratization of wealth” (socialism/Marxim) as per the teachings of Saul Alinsky.

Creamer wrote in his 2007 book:

* “We must create a national consensus that the health care system is in crisis.”
* “Our messaging program over the next two years should focus heavily on reducing the credibility of the health insurance industry....”
* “We need not agree in advance on the components of a plan, but we must foster a process that can ultimately yield consensus.”

As per those guidelines, Obama and his comrades planned to demonize the insurance industry and to agree to ANYTHING to get their scam approved. They don't care about the "components of the plan." All they want is CONTROL over our health care and our lives.

They want complete power as that of the Marxist thugs who are destroying Latin America. They plan to increase their power through the “democratization of wealth” (socialism/Marxism).

This second Stupak "amendment" (trick) adds to the revolting stench already generated by the Obamacare scam.

The stench of the lies, manipulation, intimidation, coercion, bribery, corruption, and backroom deals to force us to swallow the Obamacare SCAM -- which would destroy our health care, our economy, our freedoms and our country -- has forever tainted the Democratic Party. More and more Americans understand there's no longer a Democratic Party.

The Democratic Party has been replaced by the Progressive (Marxist) party, controlled by U.S. enemies like George Soros and bent on destroying America using the tactics of their Marxist mentor Saul Alinsky. More and more Americans are ready to do whatever necessary to defend themselves from the Obamacare SCAM.

So is that the end?
No. It's still possible that the Senate could approve the revisions measure but in the process actually amend the bill -- and even the slightest tweak to the revisions package would force the House back into action to pass that new version of the legislation.
You're also forgetting numerous legal challenges and lawsuits that will come if Odumbacare is passed....

Posted by: WildBill1 | March 21, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

An "incremental immigration amnesty" is the reason why this bill is so dangerous.

Somehow, U.S. voters are supposed to forget the message of Senator Scott Brown's recent win in Massachusetts - namely that it was a repudiation of a plan that contains an important aspect of obtaining a "permanent Democrat Party majority." The plan appears to be to offer amnesty after amnesty to illegal aliens, who receive far more in taxpayer-provided benefits than they pay in taxes. Since there is an unlimited supply of illegal aliens, this is how the majority will be obtained.

Even LULAC proudly crowed in a 20 March 2010 email to their supporters that "The Health Care & Education Affordability Reconciliation Act will provide as many as 9 million uninsured Latinos with coverage; triple Medicaid funding for Puerto Rico; and increase the funding of community health centers to $11 billion."

Thus, this healthcare plan is an incremental amnesty that takes Medicare benefits away from soon-to-be-retiring "Baby Boomers" and gives them to young immigrants.

The SEIU in a letter dated May 5, 2008 indicated they had a plan for a "permanent pro-worker (read Democrat Party) majority" A few lines later in this letter, the SEIU indicates that this plan includes a plan for a "clear path to citizenship for taxpaying, hard-working immigrants" (Code words for an illegal alien amnesty) This harmful vote-buying strategy needs to be stopped! If the House of Representatives does not stop it tonight, it will likely have to be stopped via legal challenges to this "bad law."

Obama promised Stupak that, by “executive order,” he’ll remove abortion coverage from the Obamacare scam. And Stupak believed him! You have to be Stupak to be stupaked (tricked) twice!

With such “executive orders,” Obama is becoming almost identical to Hugo Chavez and the rest of the Marxist thugs who are destroying Latin America. DICTATOR Obama seems to be taking over the legislative branch of power to force us to swallow the Obamacare SCAM, which has nothing to do with improving our health care system.

The Legislative branch and not Obama has the power to make laws. But he’s usurping the powers of the Legislative branch and becoming a DICTATOR.

Imitating Hugo Chavez and the rest of the Marxist thugs who are destroying Latin America, Obama wants to take control of everything, including our health care system.

“Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more and nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama!” Chavez cheered on Venezuelan TV. He added that he and Cuba’s Fidel Castro would now have to work harder just to keep up.

Fortunately, as we can see now, most Americans have NOT been dumbed down! Most Americans are NOT sheeple! Most Americans are ready to defend their FREEDOM and the freedom of their children and grandchildren from the abomination of Obama’s criminal scams and socialism/Marxism.

More Orwellian doublespeak from other lemming: "if don't want this bill, you are either misinformed and/or heartless." Thinking Americans understand that it's just the opposite.

It's those supporting the Obamacare scam have been brainwashed to the point of not recognizing a Marxist scam when they see it. They have been dumbed down by a substandard and politicized education as per the warnings of Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov:

It's those supporting the Obamacare scam who are not only heartless but CRIMINAL because they are helping dictator Obama STEAL from our children and grandchildren to fund the destruction of our health care, our economy and our country.

The dumbed down are obviously unable to understand how Obamacare will further contribute to “the American descent into Marxism,” which “is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple…”

Fortunately, most Americans have NOT been dumbed down. Most Americans have waken up and wised up. Most Americans are not sheeple. Most Americans prefer to be FREE.

It amazes me that Americans are on the insurance companies side and they make billions of dollars in profit every year.... where do you think they are getting the money from???? the american people!! You tell me why you can have emergency heart surgery and you die on the table and we have to bill the patient for bringing him back to life because his insurance does not cover the heart pump. So I have to explain to the patient why he owes 3K because its not covered under his plan..... wake up people. Why dont you ask your insurance company why the premiums are so high or why your deductible went up 2 or 3k. You let me know when americans stop thinking about themselves and whatever party you belong to and vote for people not parties or race or selfishness. Americans do not want thier taxes to go up and they have been going up for years this is not new people. I may not agree with everything this bill provides but I totally disagree with Americans who assume we are to lazy to get insurance for ourselves and that their lives are more important than people who lost thier jobs and lost coverage or could not afford Cobra insurance or people with pre-existing conditions. So if you regretably become unemployed or change compnies and they have different insurance than your previous company and you have any kind of health issue it will not be covered under the new plan because it is pre-existing. The cost of health care will NEVER decrease until we REVISE all the insurance companies (united healthcare, cigna, aetna, blue cross and blue shield,) and all the other insurance companies who refuse to bring down the cost for the employer and guarantee payment to the physicians and hospitals. This bill has sparked so much hatred that Senator John Lewis has been called the "N" word and spit on in 2010. What is going on people?

The wild card in this deck is the communist Chinese government.
Unlike their Washington counterparts, the Chinese are very good at math. And as America's primary creditor, they will not let their billions of dollars of loans default.
They will at some point intervene.
Then they will treat us as they do their citizens: working long hours, without any benefits at all.
Win one for the political purposes, lose one for the team.

Any time someone wants to whip up frenzied opposition to a bill or issue, they just have to label it socialist/ communist/marxist or my personal favorite, "pinko", and all the hysterical lemmings will follow. Of course most of them wouldn't know their real definitions if they tripped over them but hey, calling something socialist makes it the bogeyman and god forbid that any US president or legislator has the temerity to champion it. America's biggest folly isn't even a lack of healthcare - it's the woefully inadequate education system that has churned out ignoramuses for some 30 years who are too uninformed to even understand the issues, much less resolve them. Other developed countries have national healthcare systems because that's what civilized people do - they look after society's most vulnerable. Also, as "kdtrn" smartly pointed out, the uninsured only end up being a bigger financial burden on the system down the road which is counterproductive and ultimately asinine. The healthcare issue has been like an anvil around the US's neck for far too long - I hope they finally pass the bill and move on to other pressing issues, like maybe restoring the country to its former glory. Obama gets it and that makes him an undeniable patriot, not a traitor as some laughably suggest.

What erroneous thinking that "health care is far too important to leave in the hands of private insurance companies." That's a socialist pipe dream, thinking that (1) the government will be better at it, (2) healthcare was there's to give, and (3) people are entitled to that which their lazy butts won't get out and build for themselves. This is traitorous. This is treason against the American citizen. This is a farce, and this is a heartbreaking neglect of the will of the people. This is a government for the media and the government. You media are just as bad as the government for presenting this in such a bigoted manner. Thanks for the sell-out.

Buoyed by the hate-filled, foaming at the mouth extreme right wing of the Party (now represented by the overtly racist Tea Party) and Captain Beck and Faux News Network, they have dug in their heels and tried to stop the functioning of the duly elected Government.

Why do they hate Democracy???

The bill is not perfect, but it's a starting point for legislative action that's sorely needed to remedy the problems in our current health care industry. As most advanced nations on this planet determined a long time ago, health care is far too important to leave in the hands of private insurance companies. It's inherently contrary to their capitalist principles to provide health insurance to those who need it the most. Only an all-encompassing, non-profit government controlled entity can deliver health care to everyone, including those who need it the most (the sickest among us).

Health care is only the beginning. Next our civil liberties will be taken away also. Never forget. Vote all Democrats out come next November. We have a President who has never managed anything making life determining decisions with help from Pelosi and Frank. How did we let the libeals and socialists take over this country? To put forth so little effort to understand the legislation you are so passionately opposed to just because some radio entertainers say it isn't good for you is the most moronic stand anyone can take. Have any of you actually READ the law? Do you think Limbaugh has? Or Hannity? Not on your life, they are nothing more than paid hacks representing the sponsors interests. Obama and the democrats will have this around their necks for the rest of history so i doubt they would risk anything as stupid as Bush/Cheaney did. As for Boehner, laws are repealed every day and the Robert's court has already exposed it's loyalty so if you don't like the bill he will be sure it dies a quick death even if you turn out to approve of it. If you're worried about Obama/Biden then you mush have been in a coma for the past three decades. Then as long as you blame Obama for things that happened six or seven years before he ran then your intelligence is as exposed as the Robert's court. How can anyone not think that the government is trying to take more freedoms away from U.S. citizens through this process? They have not even allowed us to read all of the current bill's provisions. Most of the House probably doesn't know all of it either.

Of course if you do rely on the media for most of your information you do not get a reliable viewpoint either. In America most of us need to get a better grasp of what is happening beyond what we are force-fed through the agendas of those who are in control (at present). The President claimed to have the bail-out bill posted so all could view. He didn't fulfill that so what has changed? If you'd like a better future for your family you'd better get a decent footing on your own health and finances, not the government's version.

What happened to reporting of the facts in our country, instead of opinions? What is most disgusting to me is that our politicians use toddler tactics to try to get what they want without truly having a clue as to what is good for the people of our country....and then they portray this with Hollywood drama for the average citizen to ingest and believe.

As a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse, Military Service member, US Citizen, and human being, I am quite frankly amazed at how many people oppose this bill. I ask all of you to stop being armchair quarterbacks and realize you most likely have no idea what goes on "behind the scenes" in health care. When people do not have insurance, they do not have preventive health care. This leads to increased costs for our country because instead of being treated early, many are forced to wait until their conditions are exacerbated so badly that they end up spending months in the hospital....oh, and by the way, with no way to pay those bills.

I have been fortunate to live all over the world and I have seen, first hand, how wonderfully "socialized" medicine works. It is time for Americans to stop being so ignorant and pompous...AND SELFISH, and realize our system is BROKEN! I also think it is hysterical that people view this as a "Marxist/Communist" plot and spew this garbage for our less educated members of society to pick up and believe. Wake up people....with this new bill there will not come a Dictatorship, rationing of healthcare or food, or bread lines. And for anyone who has ever dealt with an HMO.....that is rationed health care....rationed by people in suits with no medical experience.

Wake up, America....please.

As a Canadian living in the US I have watched the health care reform debate with fascination and, quite often, horror. I haven't read the legislation, so I can't comment on its details. It may very well be that there are some serious flaws in it that lawmakers are legitimately afraid will have negative consequences. But looking at the big picture, it amazes me that politicians aren't united in their desire to bring adequate healthcare to every American. But united they are not. There are politicians who unabashedly argue that healthcare is a privilege and not a right of every citizen. Really? Do they think the "pursuit of happiness" is a privilege as well? Isn't good health one of the most important foundation stones of happiness? Remarkably, those against health care reform have even been successful in deceiving and frightening those who would most benefit from it, to the point that these less-fortunate people now oppose it. It's so WEIRD to see this happening! God bless, Mr. Obama. His patience with the childishness of those politicians who are ONLY interested in their own political futures seems endless. Hopefully, ten years from now universal health coverage will be taken for granted and the good people of the US won't even remember a time when they didn't have it. Sadly, much of the world is tittering at the silliness of all this political wrangling, and losing respect for the US day by day. If the US wants to continue to have influence in the world, it had better sort out its domestic problems first. Most Americans still believe that they have it better than another other citizens. But the truth is, many other countries have already surpassed you. And many more will pass you while you spend your time in filibusters and useless rhetoric. When people come together to work for a common good this is called cooperation and progress...NOT socialism, as some would have you believe.
Straighten up and fly right...or history will record the complete demise of a once-great nation.
Next on the agenda: financial reform. Another no-brainer...if it wasn't for those pesky corporate donations that keep politicians on a slippery moral slope.

How can you call this "socialism" or a "government takeover"? There are simply no facts to support that. It seems to me these hate-spewing, founding fathers-invoking comments are completely divorced from reality, and likely bought and paid for by the health insurance industry. Has it really come to that in America - that corporations can buy us? This bill , diluted and pork-laden as it is, will help drive down costs. All the non-partisan groups, like the OMB, have said so. You tools of the health-insurance companies needn't worry, your employers will still rake in obscene profits while working families struggle.

If this Bill passes today, it will mark the END of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY in this Country. The "blow back" from the American people on having this incredibly expensive bill rammed down their throats during the worst economic down turns in the history of this Country will certainly produce an ANGER VOTE that will be unrepresented, and unlike any the US has ever seen. Nancy Pelosi is sadly bringing forth not only the end of our very proud Democratic Party, but also ending the Obama Administrations opportunity to true make long term serious changes. A win on this vote will almost certainly end the careers of any and all Career Democratic legislators beginning in November, and as all the analysts are clearly stating, most likely lead to impeachment procedures for President Obama. Was the Health Care Bill actually doomed from the start? No, with the proper timing and building of support it probably would have been very successful. However in the midst of this current economic situation, and the fact that it is having to be forced down the throats of all American without their support, and against their wishes, at a time when they simply can not afford it, will certainly produce a backlash of anger voting that will destroy any and all chances of bringing true long term changes to our Country. Goodbye Democratic Party...bad timing, poor judgment and a forced vote have determined your fate. Goodbye Career Democrats, Nancy Pelosi rushed in too fast, with the wrong timing and fumbled the ball at a time when the economic climate has forced the American voter to "find someone to blame".
If this passes, it will be the straw that beaks the back of our once proud, and extremely powerful party.

The same arguments used to resist that idea are being used now to derail this historic vote. Remember desegregation? Same thing. Every fear tactic was used to oppose it. Even with Medicare, the fight was ferocious. We are the wealthiest nation on earth, but over 50% of bankruptcies in this country are caused by unpaid medical bills. Don't let fear hijack your mind.

For one thing, it violates the 28th Amendment. Congress excluded themselves, federal employees, and unions. If it's good enough for US, it's good enough for public servants. Pelosi and Obama forgot to mention that part and few of you know you won't get benefits until 2013, but taxes start now.
There was a line that said No future Congress shall repeal this bill. But you would have to read over 2000 pages to see that.

You are right, ohioan. Obama is setting up a dictatorship a la Hugo Chavez.

Imitating Hugo Chavez and the rest of the Marxist thugs who are destroying Latin America, DICTATOR Obama seems to be taking over the legislative branch of power to force us to swallow the Obamacare SCAM, which has nothing to do with improving our health care system.

The Legislative branch and not Obama has the power to make laws. But he's usurping the powers of the Legislative branch and becoming a DICTATOR.

Imitating Hugo Chavez and the rest of the Marxist thugs who are destroying Latin America, Obama wants to take control of everything, including our health care system.

"Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more and nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama!" Chavez cheered on Venezuelan TV. He added that he and Cuba's Fidel Castro would now have to work harder just to keep up.

Fortunately, as we can see now, most Americans have NOT been dumbed down! Most Americans are NOT sheeple! Most Americans are ready to defend their FREEDOM and the freedom of their children and grandchildren from the abomination of Obama's criminal scams and socialism/Marxism.

There has been allot of misinformation on the health care bill. Many of the provisions in this bill have been proposed previously by both democrats and republicans. To act as if it is some kind of communist plot is a bit hysterical. Unlike say buying a toaster it is very difficult for the average consumer to effectively compare different insurance policy's. It is often to late to do anything about your insurance once you realize there is something wrong with it. A figure like "55% of Americans don't like the bill" is only useful if those people actually have an understanding of whats in it.For most things the free enterprise system is the most efficient way to do things.I think health care is one area that is better handled as a public service.

Employer based care was a government creation. HMO’s were supposed to be the fix. Mandates of who would be receiving care…It all was designed to get us to the point of socialized medicine, this is just another step in that direction.

Did you here the one about the guy’s wife that killed all of his children because she wanted to make more room for the home invaders?

Oh what.

It wasn't his wife. It was his country.

Back in the 60’s the Federal Government came into the public schools and brainwashed us as little children with the message that the children we were about to have were unwanted because the population was rising so fast. They launched a program called, “Zero Population Growth”. They pushed Family Planning and birth control pills. Now they call the same programs, "Safe Sex" but the results are the same. I think you and I both know that you only have to trick people for their few child bearing years and there is no going back.

Many of us never had a say in the future of our unborn.

I am the result of two living cells. One from each of my parents. They are the result of two living cells, one from each of their parents. I wasn't just born. I am a continuation of life. I am a living thing that reaches back into time perhaps 400 million years and the result of billions of joining of pairs of cells. It is possible that if you were to follow my cells back to my parent’s cells and beyond that my family tree touches every living thing here on earth. That is if we limit ourselves to believing life was created here on earth. If it rained down from the immensity of the universe it could reach back into that immensity of time and space, and who knows what relationships and who knows what species.

My family line succeeded, at least until I came up against the Federal Government.

I have seen the Federal Government do little else to control the population.

The open borders, United States laws only apply to some, is a serious slap in the face. No. Not a slap in the face. It reaches well beyond that. Maybe back to the beginning of time and stretch to the bounds of the universe.
