Obamas head for romantic getaway in N.C.

By Michael D. Shear
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are heading out of town Friday for the mother of all date nights -- a weekend getaway in picturesque Asheville, N.C. (pop. 73,000). The first daughters, 8-year-old Sasha and 11-year-old Malia, are staying home, according to the East Wing.

The White House says the president is staying at the Grove Park Inn , where he held debate prep in October of 2008. Back then, he groused to reporters that he was too busy to snag any time on the golf course. On this visit, he'll likely hit the links, and maybe the spa as well.

Here's how we imagine the brochure might have looked as the First Couple flipped through possible vacation destinations:

EXCLUSIVE COUPLES WEEKEND GETAWAY!

Is the stress of ridding the world of nuclear weapons getting to you? Are you tired of solving the childhood obesity crisis? Do your nosy neighbors make your home feel like a fishbowl, especially when you take off in the helicopter?

Have we got the spot for you!

Leave the kids at home with grandma and come to the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa -- the perfect place to get away from foul-mouthed chiefs of staff, generals and their wars.

Tucked next to the legendary Blue Ridge Mountains, the resort features world-class amenities for those times when you don't want to worry about whether the prime minister of India should be sitting next to the senator from Alabama at your next state dinner.

Let worries about your public image fall away while you enjoy a facial, massage or steam bath at our world-class spa. And for guests who can't get enough time on the links, we offer the 32nd best golf course in the state of North Carolina.

Concerned about security? Don't be. We take the privacy of our guests as seriously as the U.S. Secret Service. And the resort has plenty of conference rooms for that surprise summit or last-minute news conference, should the need arise (audio-visual equipment available for an extra fee).

Experience a getaway like no other, all at rates ranging from $195 to $1,250 per night (massive security cordons priced extra based on amount of discomfort offered to the other guests).

Obama eked out a narrow win in North Carolina during the presidential election, becoming the first Democratic contender for the White House to win the state since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

He has no public events planned in the state this weekend, the White House says, but will stop in West Virginia on his way home on Sunday to speak at a memorial service for miners killed in the worst coal mine disaster in 40 years.

Obama deserves a vacation. He proberly worked harder than any president trying to clean up Bush's mess. Enjoy yourself Mr. President.

As someone who lives in NC and did not vote for President Obama I could not care less if he decides to vacation here on the weekend. That is his business and the man is entitles to get away with his wife if he wants. The fact that it costs tons of money is just a bi-product of him being President. It would be the same for him as it was and will be for future Presidents.

As far as I am concerned, all of my issues with him are related to his policies, which I think are utterly terrible for America. Wouldn't it be great if we could just talk about his policies and keep the personal crap out of it?

Note to some posters:
When you wish to add validity or reference to your posts, try to avoid sources like the Huffington Post and Factcheck.org. The Huffington Post is self explanatory. Factcheck is the work of the Annenberg Foundation-a far left operation that makes big donations to far left causes and formerly employed our current president and his terrorist buddy Bill Ayers on a project that wasted millions of dollar with absolutely no positive result.

..."going out..." and having press conference in towns and cities that are expanding is a good thing to do.

It endears.

Milea and Sasha just might get some new dresses or something, but you best believe Obama will pay for it. Or First Lady.

Most places offer the proverbial "it's on me" to the first family no matter what.
Free stuff but the coffee house/breakfast is packed (who are paying). The PR lasts for days and they make money.

Ever read about HOllywood and the gifts certain celebs get. Nice bag full of goodies.

He is the President. Somethings go unchanged through the years.

And nice dissecting of my entry(ies).
And the last line insultive post.
It is a first amendment right to insult on the NET. So is Porn, a first amendment right on the NET.

So typical of the Post to paint this Obama vacation in some romantic light. How does the Post know what the purpose of the vacation is, other than NC having a political purpose? Why doesn't it just report and not editorialize for a change? The Obamas are going to NC for a vacation, not taking the children, and not scheduling any political events (want to put money on that?) That's all the Post knows for sure; it has NO clue about any "romantic" anything, much less should it report that the Obamas are going to NC to spend a few days fighting with each other.

According to FactCheck Bush spent considerably more time 'on vacation' in the first year than Obama did in the first year.

Any of you folks posting otherwise care to post a retraction of your factually incorrect posts?

"I will put the number of Crawford visits in all 3 Bush terms up against the travel and getaways in the last year alone of Pres Obama."

President Bush (the son) spent 490 days at his Texas ranch, and 487 days at Camp David.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/18/bush-spent-487-days-at-ca_n_158902.html

That's nearly three years total.

There's simply no way Obama has come anywhere near that rate in his first year in office.

URGENT TO POTUS/FLOTUS (c/o Gibbs, Axelrod, Emanuel, Plouffe, Jarrett, Atty. Gen. Holder); MEMBERS OF CONGRESS; U.S. GOVERNORS:

We interrupt the beginning of your weekend getaway to call to your immediate attention covert domestic crimes against humanity by operatives of your administration, apparently being committed without your full knowledge:

HOMELAND-RUN FUSION CENTERS USE CELL TOWER MICROWAVE WEAPON SYSTEM TO SILENTLY TORTURE, IMPAIR, SUBJUGATE 'TARGETED' AMERICANS

All of those cell towers you see all over America are NOT all for phone calls.

Some of them are TORTURE TOWERS -- part of a nationwide microwave/laser radio frequency "directed energy weapon" system that is being used by operatives of the multi-agency Homeland Security-run "fusion center" network to silently TORTURE, IMPAIR AND PHYSICALLY AND NEUROLOGICALLY DEGRADE THE FUNCTIONING AND WELL-BEING OF SOME OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS.

And apparently, the genocidal use of this precision-targeted domestic weapon system to attack and harm U.S. citizens is being done WITHOUT THE FULL KNOWLEDGE AND CONSENT OF CONGRESS OR HIGH STATE OFFICIALS.

You MUST read this article by a veteran journalist:

And you MUST TAKE DOWN THIS HEINOUS PROGRAM AT ONCE.

Note for posters playing the Obama race-card:
It's about "policy" not race!! Try to stop insulting people who follow policy and actually follow what is happening.

Too many have taken the race baiting attack of Chris Matthews.
It is just too trite.

Look at the policies -- look at the latest numbers / new financial reports on the HCR.
Today's report reveals how much further in debt HCR will take us...and the impact on Medicare, Medicaid --.maybe someone should have read the bill.

The Obamas should have a nice time in NC.
No worries for them..we are on the road to even more debt, socialism (is here) and amnesty is next -- American jobs / border violence/etc. How much more change can we take?

It's about policy -- not race. Get over it Matthews' followers.

Obama's don't have a ranch in North Carolina. They are and will pay for what they need. A boost for N.C. I would say.

Speaking of "President Obama" You write baby bush and then screech about not addressing President Obama with respect? Says just about everything you need to know about your credibility doesn't it?

They pay for what they need? Ask Mr MAzillo from his jail cell about the sweetheart deal the Obamas got on their Chicago property and the adjoining lot. Yes the Bushes had money before being elected President. Obama has made a small fortune from his books full of contradictions with his actions that have gone unreported. The Peace Prize he was totally unqualified for when nominated and remains so regardless of what he did with the money.

try to think before you open your pie hole.

Holy Crap. What is the carbon footprint of this President...this administration? He and Biden took seperate large aircraft to NYC at the same time this week. They are constantly taking "getaways". Hell when Dubya was cutting brush on his ranch the ComPost was apoplectic about that "getaway". When Obama played golf when he was prevented from attending the Polish State Funeral, no one screeched there at the ComPost. Obama has all but bit%$ slapped Gordon Brown on numerous occasions and insulted the Queen as well as diplomatically snubbed Israel.

I have a few bones to pick with W #43 but I long for a news source that at least makes an effort to be fair and unbiased. The Washington ComPost is NOT that source. Small wonder the brand spanking new College Park print facility is already a ghost town.

In response to a number of posters here, Obama has spent very little time actually in the office working. He has spent time and our money on AF1 campaigning (in CA last week for Barbara Boxer, and many others earlier).
His speeches, written by others, are delivered from one U.S. city or another as he continues to jet about polluting the atmosphere.

Who knows what the Goldman Sachs deal is going to be? The administration is filled with GS guys. And, of course, tax-dodger Tim G. will be in charge of the financial reform details and oversight??

When is this man going to work? Now ex-Gov. Ron B. wants him to testify. He'll squeak out of that, but we all know he is not "squeaky" clean there either.

This is change -- and change rolls on and on.....
What happened to the good "ole" USA we believe(d) in?

I get a kick out of folks that think the November election is going to change everything about President Obama's administration.
Not gonna happen.
Mid term elections put your state up front. Who will YOU elect from your State to represent YOU in Congress. And then, it might not work to go "party line".
Might be a bit surprised.

Everyone acts like this mid term election is going to put more Repulsives back in office. To argue on the floor of Congress. That's is what the process is supposed to do. But it is your state so you best think long and hard about YOUR STATE first.

Unfortunately, more repulsives coming into office during mid terms just mean more arguments and "get the President on everything he does", more lobbyists paying out more perks-like cruises, cars, vacation, amd more money under the table to filibuster or not pass a bill. Like insurance companies did to the Senate on healthcare reform. A year the repulsives wasted on the argument.

So it is like this.....Don't pass the bill because it's the President's bill!!! That is such a stupid idea to even begin with. And we have already set ourselves in the "preducial" mode.

You know what the scuttlebutt is--- that if it is from President Obama or "his camp", vote no. It' a mantra in the average repulsive's sleep.

Scared of the brother from Chicago is what it tells me. I can just imagine what is said over the dinner table in pristine and clean white-man culture bubbles. I bet if you go around the country for the heck of it, all you will here is "that black son of a **** in the white house......"
And THAT is probably the least insultive.

Look at your own state first folks --in the midterms. Your state just might be the second in line, after Arizona, for going to h***** !

Keep up the silly, inane comments, Obama haters. You are well on your way to insuring his success in the 2012 election and all of the incumbent Congressmen in 2010. Thank you, birthers, TeaBummers, conservatives, Repugs...for your kind assistance. We Obama-lovers are grateful! (Smiles!)
PS: Just for kicks and grins, I hope Arizona's undocumented workers triple their numbers. Make Arizona a third world country tomorrow!

And don't gripe about the security either, when we pay for security all of ex-Presidents and their families. Even Vice Presidents and their families.

Besides, I think extra security for the first family is a must. Everyone is gunning for this President because he is black. Next, they will all put him in a convertible with a bit of triangular crossfire on a winding road.

This Supreme Court needs to rule on yet another First Amendment case. It must take up folks like LarryG62 and DCer1 who practice verbal terrorism and murder of logic while hiding behind a pseudonym.
Two questions:
1. Do you get some child-like delight in saying "slug" or "imbecile" when Mommy can't find out? Please say something vaguely sensible to yourself.

2. Is this your minds' subterranean fear of a hardworking black man (who is a distinct "non-slug") and a magna cum laude Harvard Law graduate(a "non-imbecile" for sure) or is it that your arrogance has allowed being used to dreaming up lies about whatever it is that your limited mind fears?

NEW FLASH !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The POTUS has 24 hour security wherever he goes. That means that if he and the First Lady go home to Chicago or to NC, they have security. That also means that Former POTUS and stay on the ranch Bush had 24 security as well.(Paid by Taxpayers)

Give that argument a rest. BTW, President Obama donated his Nobel award money to charity. He has much more class than me. I would have put the money in a trust for my children and told all the haters to kiss my ass.
