Democrats to unveil immigration plan

Just one day after President Obama told reporters aboard Air Force One that he was unsure immigration reform could pass this year, Democratic leaders in the Senate plan to unveil a framework for giving illegal immigrants living in the United States legal status.

CNN obtained an advance copy of the draft proposal:

The 26-page draft obtained by CNN attempts to woo GOP senators in part by calling for "concrete benchmarks" to secure the border before granting illegal immigrants the opportunity to gain legal status.
Those benchmarks include: increasing the number border patrol officers and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, increasing the number of personnel available to inspect for drugs and contraband, and improving technology used to assist ICE agents.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) will announce the proposal at a press conference Thursday.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Thursday that "there is not a chance" of immigration legislation passing this year. The draft proposal was nothing but a "ploy" to encourage Hispanics to stay in the Democratic fold, he suggested.

Build A Fence To Keep The Illegals Out!

The MayDay celebration is an opportunity. The 'O'Man is a functionary in the Progressive Agenda, his history is not his fault. Blame the Post-Colonial Elites, dad or the Angry and Wanting, mother. Take your cell camera to the MayDay Parade. Position yourself across from the network cameras, as the procession turns away from the networks, snap the faces. The site hasn't been built yet, but biometric coding is being set up. In the interest of fairness, 'everyone is legal' until proven

ENFORCE THE LAWS on THE books, Build a double fence, send these LAW BREAKERS home.

AND KEEP them out of the U.S unless they follow the rules to get in here the correct way.

KICK out every incumbent that is running in 2010 and 2012. Put in fresh new faces and hold their feet to the fire to follow the oath of office that they take.

Won't get fooled again in 2010!
We don't need no Stinking Re Elects!

This is an outline of the same bill that failed in 2007--the same pay a fine and go to the end of the line nonsense that won't work.

Under that scheme, illegal immigrants would have had to come forward, pay a fine and back taxes, and then apply for citizenship.

What ever you think about illegal aliens, they are not stupid enough to risk the niche that they have in this country to take a chance on an uncertain application for citizenship and pay a fine to boot.

It is quite a risk particularly since the bill does not mention speeding up the application process for citizenship. If you were an illegal, would you out yourself and pay a hefty fine and back taxes?

I guess Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) thinks he can get this through the Senate because he has more votes than he did in 2007. If this bill is submitted again it will fail and it will deserve to fail.

It is almost like this bill is cynically designed to fail so that the status quo can remain. We need immigration reform but please someone come up with ideas that have a chance of working.

I really don't like to call out a fellow Texas, It doesn't matter when it's the likes of TexRancher...

To make it clear, it's not just the Democrats that are corrupt but so are the Repulicans. Politicians have grown to appreciate and defend their position and office rather than representing the people.

You could barely trust any politican before, now it's impossible to trust any of them because their all protecting their careers. Career politicians play politics and the people suffer from their games.

I laugh at both parties bickering back and forth as if their words actually meant something.

Anyone remember that after school special where there were two kings of two different kingdoms that banished rhyme and reason? The kingdoms because chaos and anarchy. It seems that this is what is happening in America today.

Don't look to our younger generations to be any better...just check out the T.V. and radio to see what they consider cool and modern language.

IQ168, that actually only looks good on paper...

How do you think we got to the point of having 12 million plus undocumented aliens into this country? 70 years of band-aid legislation to our immigration laws.

And for all your IQ, you choose to quote a fallen nation...wrap your IQ around this...God keeps His people in line with 10.

Many people argue that this law is only doing what the federal government has not done--- to secure the borders. My question is is this law really securing the borders??/

The answer no it is not, this law only creates fear in people.

Posted by: lil_bluestar | April 30, 2010 6:40 PM | Report abuse

I think that the law should be redesigned because it is not doing what it is said to do. It is only creating fear.

It says to be securing the borders but how is this law securing the boreders????

There IS an "immigration plan." It has been in effect for 70 years. ENFORCE THE LAWS THAT ARE ON THE BOOKS!!! "The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws" Tacitus (Roman Senator and historian - 56 to 115 A.D.)

As a proud California who is sick of paying the economic, medical and educational costs of illegals who are taking over our state city by city, please call your congressperson and demand that the US Attorneys who prosecute federal crimes in each state start prosecuting illegals for the federal crime of illegally entering our country. Right now, illegals can commit identity theft, passport and visa fraud and the US Attorneys won't even take on the great majority of these cases. If someone commits a state misdemeanor and are here illegally, federal agents won't even show up because it is pointless if the US Attorneys won't prosecute. Everyone is frustrated and the illegals are delighted that they are beating the system. That is why their crimes are ramping up. They know that the political will to deal with them criminally is almost nonexistent. Obama, you are president right now. Issue an executive order requiring that a federal agent show up at jail/prison each time an illegal convict is released, and either prosecute them under federal law or deport them immediately. It is the feds who are not doing their job, and if the Dems have their way, this will continue. 2012 is the year to finally tackle this American non-partisan problem.

It feels misguided to attempt this now. Our top two priorities are already on the table: 1. Financial reform 2. Energy

Immigration will and should be next, but bringing it up now will pollute the dialogue of the other two and imperil their necessary passage.

I am a progressive. I see Senator Reid's wishes driving this agenda. That's unhelpful. The nation's priorities must not be bent to suit the Senator's political challenges.

Reid Pelosi and the rest of this criminal bunch are determined to bring about another AMNESTY inspite of the promise that the last one WAS THE LAST AMNESTY! My question is; if they grant another AMNESTY rewarding 20+ million ILLEGAL INVADERS, will it expressly EXCLUDE OBAMA? Democrats seem to want to exempt themselves from all the laws they write so it's reasonable to expect them to include The One in their exclusions.

The good part of that exclusion would be that when we get the proof that he's an ILLEGAL, we can deport him and maybe, just maybe his Aunty along with him! She's still here in public housing after ignoring two previous deportation orders isn't she?

Posted by: TexRancher | April 30, 2010 7:48 AM | Report abuse

We were promised in 1986, NO MORE AMNESTIES! Congress owes that promise to the American people, but appearently Congressional Promises are worth nothing more than Obama's promises which are worth - NOTHING!

Never thought I'd live to see a president make Jimma Carter look good and Bill The Zipper Clinton look honest!

Now where did I leave that definition of "is"?

Posted by: TexRancher | April 30, 2010 7:28 AM | Report abuse

12 Million illegals here for how long? (this hasn't just happened during President Obama's term you know!!). Some of these folks have children and grandchildren(& even great-grandchildren) that are Americans. Get educated folks--the illegals paid 7Billion into Social Security a few years ago(& won't see a dime back most likely)--who do you think is financing all the American housewives/husbands to get free money(50% of what their husbands/wives get-and that's on top of his/her take & free of paying anything in to get it!!!). Apparently we all need to be saying "Long live the Illegals-keep on paying for these American bums!" Have the illegals all step forward and get naturalized...and close the borders with the understanding that anyone else can come in legally only. Democrats please fix this mess-the repubs sure didn't when they owned all branches of the gov! GOP-you keep being the obstructionists you are because we're all seeing you for exactly what you are(one minute you're screaming about illegals, the next you're fighting immigration reform). Americans-you don't like illegals, then get off your dead butts and get out there and do the jobs they are doing(i.e., picking vegetables and fruits and farm/construction work)and expect to pay more for those apples. I haven't seen an illegal yet "taking a job away from an American"--because the Americans are too doggone lazy to do the jobs the illegals are doing. Apparently our people here would starve to death looking at a chicken in the yard...

I will never give over my country to these invaders! I didn't have children to leave them a third world slum for a home. We gave illegals amnesty once before. We were promised this wouldn't happen again. THEY LIED THEN AND THEY ARE LYING NOW! They hope we have a short memory, because if they can pull off adding 22 million voters to the Democratic Party, America will entitle itself to death. This country is only as good as the content of the character (sound familiar) of its voters and that character has already been evidenced by a willingness to take entitlements and NOT PAY TAXES. People like that will have no problem voting themselves a free ride at the expense of our country. Every country's people believe theirs is different and will stand forever. History tells us the true story. The experiment of democracy can and will fail unless THE PEOPLE, the honest, hardworking, taxpaying people of character get off their butts and stand up. This could be the crossroads and history will judge us by what we do now.

The GOP should stay out of the cameras on this hoodwink, and let these Democrats cut their own bait, and walk their own plank; they should be used to that by now.

Any one in office that whould put these plus 12,000,000 illegais in the U.S.A. ahead of the AMERICAN PEOPLE and our country will only get the fools vote. All illegals are illegal and the root of the problem is their illegal employeers that have violated the U.S.A. law buy hireing them for they seek cheap labor cost and the tax payer can pick up the rest of the illegals cost. AMERICANS, SPEAK OUT AND VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE IN NOVEMBER NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE IF THEY TURN ON US, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. I will and also become a INDEPENDENT too.

Posted by: usapdx | April 29, 2010 6:09 PM | Report abuse

Both Republicans (for their supporter businesses who want to continue to exploit cheap illegal labor) and Democrats (as they pander to Latino voters who want all their sister's-best friend's-cousins here too) have a vested interest in promoting more illegal immigration into America.

On top of that, I came across a quote form former Pres. Clinton that sums up why the American worker is doomed when it comes to job protection. He basically said the only way to fund the pyramid scheme called Social Security is with an unending tide of immigrants. Of course, unlimited population growth is IMPOSSIBLE. The land resources are not unlimited. There is only so much fresh water. But politicians always have to postpone the problem until after their political career ends.

If we the American people are going to ever be protected from those who would undercut our wages and turn us all into beggars and slaves, we will have to do it by challenging all our leaders on these issues, Republicans and Democrats alike. No one can hide behind a party label and say "well I'm with you 60% of the time, so vote for me, because the other guy is with you only 40% of the time."

Either you are with the American worker or you are against the American worker. Anyone who votes for amnesty should be voted out of office. Anyone who is against strong borders should be voted out of office.

The way to protect the elderly is not with an endless stream of foreigners, but with eliminating the ceiling on what wages are taxed for SS, raising the retirement age, and mandating personal savings plans in addition to SS that individuals are responsible for paying into. SS was never meant to be the sole source of support for people who will work 40 years then live on the dole another 40.
We don't need a mass invasion by another culture that obliterates our own just to protect us from the acknowledgment of this simple fact.

Posted by: Dutton1 | April 29, 2010 6:09 PM | Report abuse

No benchmarks. No pathway or amnesty. The border has to be fenced and manned to the point that incursions are reduced by 95%. Give illegal aliens here 6 months to come forward and be allowed to return to their homelands with no negative record other than one count of crossing the border illegally. Then they may apply just like the millions of legal immigrants. After 6 months the are found and deported with no chance of ever applying to be legal immigrants.

Posted by: Estoban | April 29, 2010 6:00 PM | Report abuse

Harry Reid is desperate and will offer anything to get re-elected. Why not offer each illegal a free house? The government owns enough of them in Nevada. That should do the trick for you, Harry.

The benchmark should be: the border is closed. Spending money and stationing agents are not accomplishments. Those are activities. Why do political hacks confuse spending public resources with accomplishing goals?

PLEASE, will some one think about what is good for our country? No one represents the interests of the American citizens on this issue. Democrats pander to the hispanic voters and Republicans pander to the big business desire for cheap labor to the detriment of hard working Americans who cannot work for substandard wages and who are not intimidated in the workplace.

What voters need to recognize is that the Mexican government has lost control of northern Mexico to the drug cartels. The Mexican government is powerless to control the criminals. The cartels are intruding into Arizona, Nevada, California and Texas and will become bolder unless they are stopped. The Mexican President didn't deliver his critical speech at the bridge in Juarez because he knows he wouldn't make it back to Mexico City alive. The border should be closed to protect our sovereignty as a nation. Do we have to wait until dead bodies litter the streets of US cities EVERY MORNING (as happens in Mexican cities along the border) before officials act.

We do not need new laws. It is already illegal to employ undocumented persons. According to the I-9 regulations, criminal charges can be brought against employers who are repeat offenders. If Republicans really cared about this country more than their profits they would stop hiring undocumented workers. Of course they might also stop if they went to jail for doing so.

Protecting US citizens from criminals is not racial profiling. Failing to protect US citizens is just stupid. Both parties are throwing us under the train.

Things are getting better & better!

Arizona has forced the illegal immigration issue front & center. The American people want this foreign invasion stopped, while BOTH parties and their Big Business Masters want to to keep things "business as usual."

The fight is on. The sleeping giant is awake. The American people will not be ignored.

The "Hispanic Community" and the Ruling Class elites will soon find out how little power they really have.

Civil War 2 has started, and Arizona is Ground Zero.

Posted by: pmendez | April 29, 2010 4:40 PM | Report abuse

The Democrats better respect the laws of our Country's security. Would it be to much to ask the Democrats to do a backgroung check on the illegal people living here so we all can know if one of these people may be a terrorist or a rapist, child molester, murderer hiding from their Government. In a time of war letting all of the illegal people stay here could backfire in our faces, just like it did on that military base. Wouldnt you rather be safe than sorry?

Posted by: randykree | April 29, 2010 4:35 PM | Report abuse

Measuring how secure the border is by measuring inputs, rather than by measuring results, is daft. There's only one reason to do that--because measuring results will never bring about the amnesty the Democrats crave.

Obama and Napoleon have gutted the real border fence, removed officers and are working towards creating an open border. It is an outrage. We do not need reform, except to pass HR 1868 to end the Anchor Baby route to citizenship. This bill would require one parent at the time of birth must be a US citizen to transfer citizenship. Instead we get up to 400,000 Anchor Babies, 18 years of welfare payments and legal fees paid for by the taxpayers.

Our government both Democrats and Republicans have miserably failed American citizens and past the cost of the immigration invasion on to the taxpayer.

We need to start reform in November and 2012.

A political ploy, like everything else this congress and administration has done.

Posted by: hared | April 29, 2010 3:13 PM | Report abuse

If it was a ploy, it absolutely worked. Democrats are now on record as trying to do "something", while Boehner and the Republicans are now on records as saying "hell no!"

That "hell no!" isn't just being heard by the Hispanic community. In justifying their draconian measures, Arizona politicians have consistently cited the failure of the federal government to deal with the issue. Now all of the border states have heard that the Republicans are still unwilling to lift a finger to help them. It is tacit support for what Arizona has done.

In refusing to consider a federal approach, the Republicans are taking responsibility for the inevitable outrage and failure of the Arizona law. Even Republicans aren't usually this ham-fisted in their opposition.
