SEIU blasts Obama immigration enforcement policies

By Spencer S. Hsu
One of the nation's biggest labor unions, a major backer of President Obama, is condemning his Department of Homeland Security's immigration enforcement practices, protesting the use of deportation quotas for agents and expanded workplace audits.

Eliseo Medina, international executive vice president of Service Employees International Union, said SEIU members want DHS "to stop these crazy, irrational policies," while seeking to turn up pressure on Congress to take up overhaul legislation. SEIU is holding vigils and demonstrations Thursday in Oakland and Sacramento, Calif., and then in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Boston, New York City and Minneapolis Friday.

While Obama and Homeland Security Janet Napolitano criticized the George W. Bush administration for emphasizing factory raids and neighborhood sweeps, and promised instead to focus on deporting the most dangerous illegal immigrants, immigrant advocates said that thousands of ordinary workers are still being forced into the underground economy by electronic audits of companies' hiring records.

Combined with recent disclosures that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is changing how it evaluates agents to emphasize caseload quotas and is widening whom it targets for deportation to sustain high removal statistics, Medina said the reality of DHS's actions is not matching the administration's rhetoric.

"They said they were going after criminals. They need to do that. They said they were going after bad actor employers to take away the profit motive. They need to do that. But instead, they are still going after meatpackers, janitors and cooks," Medina said.

"There has been a failure with this strategy, and so there's a lot of anger within our union, because we look at and see the everyday impact of these policies, and it's the complete opposite of what they said they were going to do," Medina said.

In related news, frustrated with Democrats, the SEIU is starting a new third party in North Carolina.

How odd is it that a union is coming down on the side of people coming into this country illegally to compete with Americans for scarce jobs? Not odd at all when you consider the following:
There are two fundamentally different and inherently incompatible factions among unionized workers.
There is a LABOR movement that is comprised of largely of industrial blue collar workers that has sought to level the playing field in negotiations with private owners of capital, who may have bargaining advantages that stem from better information, deeper pockets and industrial concentration. These unions are in an adversarial position with the management of the capital, who serve at the pleasure of the owners of that capital. LABOR unions concentrate on maximizing the pay of their workers, for given amount of work.
All of the recent growth in unions has come from the faction that I refer to as the LEISURE movement. These unions, such as the SEIU,NEA, AFSCME (the Union that works for you) work by colluding with, rather than bargaining against management, which in this case are elected politicians. The power of a LEISURE union comes not from the threat of a strike, but from the ability of a LEISURE union to deliver political victory (or defeat) at the polls, to the politicians they are colluding with. Because of this it is essential for the LEISURE leader to maximize the number of public employees along with the number of public pension recipients. They therefore push to minimize the work done for a given amount of pay ,in contrast to Labor unions which try to maximize pay for a given amount of work. This is seen in the constant demands for smaller class size, earlier and earlier retirement, etc . They also benefit in two ways from government subsidies for idleness, (which is itself a leisure-intense activity). First the more people on the dole, the more government workers are needed to administer the dole, and secondly the recipients of the dole do not vote like taxpayers do, in fact they vote exactly the way LEISURE leaders would want them to. This explains the position of the SEIU. If an illegal alien “steals” an Laborers Union job , the first result is an American who has been converted from a tax-payer into a client of the SEIU-run Unemployment Compensation office. This person will likely be more concerned with an extension of unemployment benefits, than the Federal deficit the next time he fills out his ballot. If the illegal alien fails to find work, and resorts to crime, the demand for police, public defenders and prosecutors, prisons, guards etc is incrementally increased. If the Illegal alien has children the will likely be educated by NEA member teachers. While low cost foreign competition sneaking into the country is a threat to the interests of LABOR unions, for LEISURE unions, they are a gift that keeps on gi

"Deserve your dream"
The decision will be made by majority, and by people that have money and power. They would not care that somebody is pathetically scared of illegal aliens, that somebody finds it to be unfair.
They would not listen to anybody when they can gain more power, support, and more money after a certain law or policy.
Illegal aliens are a burden for any society. But they are consumers, and with their number they may consume a lot and boost small and other kinds of businesses profits. Some illegal immigrants pay taxes to the government, so the government can pay salaries to people that are going after illegal aliens.
There is no need in Amnesty, unless its an increase in the government's revenue.
The Immigration Reform should include a path for any illegal alien to a green card. However, the path should be as thoughtful and hard as possible. So, after a person passes this path and gets his or her green card anybody could say - "yes it was deserved".
"Deserve it" should be a motto for this Immigration Reform. That's what I think.
There are no "deserve it" methods being offered now.
Today, if you are an illegal you can get marry, win a green card in the G-C lottery, or file an asylum claim. That's all they can do. Put yourself in their place (i know its hard) but think of it for a second, you have 3 options that you can choose from to immigrate here. And you have several more options if you are outside of the USA, but it may take several years until you get an approval.
"Deserve your Dream"
Choose to serve the country in the Army force for several years, community services, fines, or go to school and pay for your education, pass test on English, pay taxes and be a conviction-free person and then you can immigrate. Something like that.
Only one time, for now. And after that - strong border patrol, mandatory E-verify for employers and so on.
Why to do it after and not now? Because if now then you would break dreams that already started realizing, and if after then you will prevent wrong dreams from forming. Just from a humanistic point of view.

Nobody is reporting the fact that if 20 million illegal aliens and their family members are given residency, they will almost all be eligible for the socialist "Earned Income Tax Credit" or EITC which will cost American tax payers 10s of billions each year while American citizens go without jobs that will be taken by the newly minted Obama voters. What a deal huh?

Don't let it happen to our embattled country!

Eliseo Medina:

We the American people demand to enforce current immigration laws. We do not want illegal aliens in this country. The only way to solve this problem is: Deportation.

We do not need more people here. We already get thousands of legal immigrants each year. We need to reduce legal immigration. And stop illegal immigration once and for all.

All those politicians who support amnesty, wil not be reelected this November. And stay tune, 2012 we will elect another president.

The big scandal that the MSM won't expose is that SEIU has printing shops to create phoney ID for their workers to work, and more importantly, to VOTE.

The only problem with our immigration laws and policies is lack of enforcement. These people are breaking our laws and should should as any criminal be deported. IMO the only civil right they should enjoy is to be given a quick exit.

From their web site.. a job for Americans?

September 18, 2007 IHSS Internal Worksite Organizer (English - Mandarin/Cantonese) San Jose area,CA Organizing
The Chinese are the second largest group of illegal aliens in this country. SEIU has so many illegal aliens in their ranks that they should be deported in mass. But this is a union that simply ignores the laws and accepts illegal aliens, and so, they are probably popular with marginal Hotels, and incompetent managers. Hire them at at low wages, show them how to collect welfare, and they are getting an excellent subsidy from the American Taxpayer. Us a fake I.D., and you can snag Federal Welfare also.
EVERY single day we allow this to continue, things will get worse. I believe Obama wants the issue very hot, and then pretend he is going to be forced to allow them amnesty. A 2.6 trillion dollar amnesty in fact. Oh yes... Obama's idea of representing the people. I think it can destroy this country so long as Congress joins Obama in preventing immigration reform on any terms except their own. And I am very sure the people of this country do not want amnesty allowed in mass.

I'm glad to see this administration is doing something about illegal immigration. BTW I don't remember a 43 column. Whats up wit dat?

Posted by: saintleonard | April 9, 2010 9:40 AM | Report abuse

Frankly, I don't give a fig about what Medina thinks. Perhaps SEIU should get a bit more scrutiny into their inner workings, corrupt band of thugs that they are. We have immigration laws for a reason and the fact is that our government is too lax in enforcing them, not to strict. Illegals have NO rights here and I'm for deporting all of them. I'm also in favor of severly punishing those employers who knowlingly hire them and unions that allow them into their membership and advocate for them for the rights due to citizens. I have the utmost contempt for Medina and the entire SEIU organization.

So,does the fact that the Arizona Dept. of
Public Safety & Maricopa County Sheriff
Joe and his MCSO are arresting Illegal Aliens From South of the Border Down Mexico
Way here in Arizona alone nowdays maybe also been putting a crimp in SEIU finding
new Union Members? The DPS Troopers have
busted four pickup trucks with over 15 Illegal Aliens Hiding Under Sheets of Plywood in the bed in just the last two weeks alone! So no wonder SEIU goons are becoming unhappy with their Comrade Leader
Barack Hussein Obama as they keep losing new SEIU members and Obama and his Jerk Sec
of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano can't
stop Sheriff Joe & his MCSO & AZ DPS from
making it very difficult for these new SEIU
Members to get to work on time,by the way
their Mexico to USA plywood truck bed
pick up taxi service keeps getting arrested
in Arizona! Down with SEIU Goons and SEIU
Illegal Alien SEIU Members! You Go AZ DPS
and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe & MCSO!

Obama's Department of Homeland Security's immigration enforcement practices, protesting the use of deportation quotas for agents and expanded workplace audits, is way over due. I have no problem with immigrants migrating to America legally, after all, that is the premise on which this country was built. However, illegal aliens greatly impact our economy. They are taking away job opportunities from American citizens at a time when unemployment is at an all-time high. Illegal immigrants are exploited by corporations, large and small, due to their lack of education and/or language barriers and are seen as a cheap source of labor. Illegal immigration can also affect other aspects of our daily lives, such as housing. If we don't do something soon, our economy will never recover. As far as illegal immigrants who are dangerous criminals, I believe that they should be at the top of the deportation list. Notice I said at the top of the list, not the only ones on the list. I have only one soon can we implement these enforcement practices?

Unbelievable demanding entitlement SEIU! You openly allow illegal aliens into your union and than think you will push amnesty down our throats? Go ahead, make my day! The anger out here is very real, bringing up amnesty will blow the gasket I think.
Here is an idea...SEIU gets rid of their illegal alien ranks and give those jobs to Americans! SCRE YOU!

Um, SEIU, how about you STOP hiring illegals - and THEN we will call off the audits.

The point of this law enforcement is to enforce the law. Upon you. For your unlawful acts.

Eliseo - maybe you should step down. Clearly, you are not able to be objective about the situation. You've shaken the citizens down in this country - through our weak and ineffective Democratic Representatives - so now you want to bash the Prez? Ok. It's okay with me.

ICE - come on down to Adamson High School in Dallas - where you will find 40% of the student population is illegal...just follow them home.

infinity555 is on the right track, but simply saying we should enforce the law isn't enough since the establishment - politicians, the WaPo and the rest of the MSM - are going to keep doing what they've been doing no matter what the rest of us think.

In order to change things, you have to help discredit those on the other side and show how they can't be trusted. And, this is the best way to do that:

If I could get anyone to help promote that plan we could turn the tide on this issue, but after promoting it for over three years with almost zero help I'm beginning to wonder whether people want to do things that are effective or whether they just want to complain.

The Immigration firestorm against the--WIDE--open borders movement is supported heavily by wealthy corporate ownership. The congregational church, ACLU, US Chamber of Commerce, The Council of Foreign Relation, SEIU Unions all furnished copiously with lobbyists dollars. All want an unfettered flow of cheap labor either for future voting blocks, to replenish church pews, for low wage labor, but all for bulging coffer's of money. Before readers jump to coclusions or the rhetoric of the SEIU--NOT ALL MEMBERS BELIEVE IN THE UNIONS AGENDA. ASK OTHER UNION MEMBERS WHO HAVE NOT BEEN BRAIN-WASHED BY PROPAGANDA AND NOT NECESSARILY THE SEIU. FOR INSTANCE TALK TO MEMBERS OF THE TEAMSTERS OR THE AFL-CIO. The Teamsters certainly wont agree, because they are already losing jobs from the deliberate government incursion of foreign national trucks allowed to cross the border. This is under the FREE TRADE-NAFTA plan for 18 wheelers to transport cheap goods made South of the border, to boost corporate American profits.

Numbersusa is fighting for--ALL--American citizens and legal residents. Eight million illegal immigrants have jobs because of parasite businesses, while our government does nothing about the 15 million US unemployed AMERICANS.WE CANNOT TRUST OUR GOVERNMENT AND THOSE WHO BUY THEIR LOYALTY. USE YOUR VOTE TO SPEAK UP. JOIN NUMBERSUSA million of members to fight the battle against another MASS AMNESTY. Whatever the other-side calls it, it is by any name AMNESTY. Together--UNITED--we can stop this travesty of our Immigration laws. We must demand E-Verify as a permanent illegal alien removal law from the workforce.

Enforce--ALL--and every state, county and community apprehension program that includes 287 (G) Audit all businesses and check their employees referencing their I-9 forms for irregularities and bring these pariah businesses owners to federal court. ICE has a job to do and like most immigration enforcement is intentionally under staffed, under funded and not given the necessary directions to perform their duties. Just like E-Verify, 287 G. and any enforcement measure its demonized or any other method of ruining its reputation by the open border usurpers. We can win if we don't unite together. REMEMBER ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS THAT HAVE ALREADY VIOLATED THE LAW, WILL WITHOUT ANY DOUBT VOTE IN ANY ELECTION. MILLIONS MORE WILL COME IF WE DON'T HALT IT. THE CONSEQUENCES WILL BE TERRIBLE, TO AMERICAS FINANCES.

Read about corruption of our leaders at Show an example of panderers to the illegal alien occupation of our country. THROW OUT SEN. HARRY REID (D-NV) in the midterm elections. This will show that intentionally manipulated polling is just is BS and we cannot lay back on our rear ends. It will influence your lives in the immediate future with third world scorn of our laws and introduce even more poverty, more deterioration of our language and a constitutional rights.
