White House: Obamas earned $5.5 million in 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says President Obama and his wife Michelle made $5.5 million last year and paid nearly $1.8 million in federal income tax.

The Obamas gave $329,000 to charities. That included $50,000 each to CARE and the United Negro College Fund.

The president also donated his $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize award to 10 charities.

The White House said the vast majority of the Obamas' income was from sales of the president's books. The president released his 2009 tax return Thursday.

Actually, he donated slightly more than half of a percent. If you round up it comes to .6%. Not that impressive since most of the people I know donate a bigger cut of their salaries than Obama or Biden.

Anyhow, carry on.

This is a reply for Gerry11 and all the posters who think that President Obama being the good guy and Bush being the bad guy is rhetoric. What's the matter guys can't you accept the truth? Bush and Cheney belong in the Hague to be tried for crimes against humanity.

Same old rhetoric, Bush bad guy, Obama good guy, which one has taken away all your freedoms, what a question and gee 5 million for doing nothing but redisturbing the wealth, can I get a job like that.

Listen, I don't begrudge anybody, including the Obama's for being wealthy. Just don't preach to your mentally impaired sheep that the rich are evil and the cause of all of their problems, when the shepherd, himself, is one of those evil rich people.

bowspray, how did you come up with $329,000 from 5.5 million being less than one half of 1%?

Posted by: thaingvu | April 15, 2010 5:15 PM | Report abuse

It seems Biden actually did a better job in charitable giving than Obama.Biden`s $4820 is 1.4% of his earned income.Obama`s meager $329,000 from 5.5 million in earned income is less than one half of 1%. The Nobel money is not earned income and most recipients don`t pocket the prize for personal gain.Obama fits Chicago Bear legend Mike Ditka`s quote..."he throws nickels around like they`re manhole covers.

"is this the same bush family that owned the texas rangers?"

He was a partial owner, but yes, that's where he made most of his money. He initially invested about $800k in the team. He made about $15 million when he sold his share of the team. If you want to know how much he paid in taxes on that, you'd have to dig up his 1988 tax return. If he's worth $25 million or so now, as someone else said, I'm guessing he never made any serious money after that.

I would think this should be clear - Obama is working for the benefit of those below him on the financial food chain. Bush could never make that claim because he worked for his own best interest.

Obama never said the wealthy are "evil" - that's crazy. He just said that they (he) can afford to pay more. There are actually a lot of wealthy individuals who agree with him.

Please LISTEN people. Stop being so reactive and LISTEN. Then form an educated opinion.

You think that Obama gives a sh** about the poor? hahahaha They can't afford his $15k per plate fundraisers so they're hardly the audience he's working for.

I suppose the only language that you'll understand is: BAAAAA BAAAA...

wow. i cant believe somebody actually implied that the Bushes make less than the Obamas. what planet is that person on? is this the same bush family that owned the texas rangers?
and the fact that the obamas EARNED that much yet are still eliminating tax cuts for that income bracket lets you know they are willing to "redistribute" their wealth. tho i prefer the term "trickle down."

We get it. Bush = stupid, greedy, selfish, ne'er-do-well. Obama = altruistic everyman, kind, benevolent saint. But in all seriousness- rational? Hi-larious. I saw nothing but conjecture, editorial, and opinion.

The Bushes are valued at over $25 million dollars because of their stocks and investments in oil - that is not something that is stated in annual income taxes - so their income was listed as lower.

So what? What makes you think they didn't pay taxes on that money before it was invested in stocks? What do you think the Obamas are doing with their money? What is Obama's net worth? Pointless conjecture here that has nothing to do with anything.

The difference is that Obama, much like Clinton, accepted that he was in a higher tax bracket, and was willing to foot more of the bill. Bush constantly tried to lessen the taxes that his tax bracket has to pay.

How do you know this? Did you know all three Presidents personally? Did you do their taxes for them? Again, nothing more than opinion and conjecture.

I would think this should be clear - Obama is working for the benefit of those below him on the financial food chain. Bush could never make that claim because he worked for his own best interest.

See previous comment. This is nothing more than your opinion.

Ultimately, I see nothing to argue about here- Obama made $5.5 million, and paid 32% of that gross figure in taxes, gave lots of money to charities. I'm sure if we saw his AGI and net taxable income, he probably paid well above 40% in income taxes, probably even closer to 45%. That's more than I paid, so big whoop. Who cares?

Posted by: pswift00 | April 15, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

This is why I love this President. He paid 33% in Fed income tax. If he was really doing some loophole hunting, that number would have been lower. And he doesn't begrudge that he has to pay it because he looks at the millions he got to keep.

He also donated thousands of dollars showing that he still gives back. I guess he puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to taxes - the wealthy can afford to pay more so that the less wealthy can have enough money to make a living to support society with the jobs that are essential - garbage collection, waiting tables, daycare, postal delivery, office cleaners, etc.

Obama's income came primarily from his book deals, Bush's from oil, investments, & Halliburton. Bush never wrote a book because in order to write a book...you must be able to write.

Wow.

Some people really do just want to yell, rather than actually pay attention. If folks on this board would be quiet and listen, they would observe that the Obamas gave a lot of money in donations, and that most of the money came from book sales. He has to claim those upfront.

Hey RobParker,

Don't criticize Obama because Bush never wrote a book. I am sure someone out there would pay him millions. All he has to do is first learn to read, then to write and its all gravy after that.

And Bush has lost more money in failed businesses than the Obama's will ever earn.

Mr. Obama: Money can't buy America justice. You MUST act to restore the rule of law -- and to end covert programs that are TORTURING AND IMPAIRING AMERICANS.

Victims of nationwide federal-local silent microwave/RF assault demand:

"MR. OBAMA, TEAR DOWN THOSE HOMELAND CELLULAR TORTURE TOWERS!"

"Project Geneva" -- You cannot wait. You must act now. The operatives running this covert system will not stand down unless they are forcefully and publicly TAKEN DOWN.
