Biden cracks a joke about Blumenthal's Vietnam service

By Matt DeLong

Vice President Joe Biden apparently couldn't resist making a joke about Connecticut attorney general and Democratic Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal's exaggerated Vietnam service at a barbeque for about 50 wounded veterans at his home Tuesday.

From the pool report:

While talking about the experience of troops returning from Vietnam, [Biden] joked "I didn't serve in Vietnam. I don't want to make a Blumenthal mistake here. Our attorney general from Connecticut, God love him." Later on he added "I have a bad habit of saying exactly what I think."

For the record, like at any good barbeque, beer was on hand -- including Yuengling, Sam Adams and Bud Lite -- though presumably the teetotaling Biden stuck to the non-alcoholic stuff.

Maybe they've revised the chain of command in the long years since I was a Marine, but the Vice President of the United States was in the "chain" I memorized in boot camp, and again each time there was a change in officials at the top, or when I joined a new unit.

Someone should also tell screwjob15 (what an apt nic) that Bush the Lesser started the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and that Obama merely inherited them.

I'm wondering if screwjob15 is really a Democratic Party operative, trying to make conservatives look stupid. If so, its working.

Matt DeLong took Biden's comment out of context. Biden was discussing Vietnam and used the universal "we" and then immediately corrected himself so it wouldn't look like he was saying he served in Vietnam. He was trying to be respectful of the vets who did serve.

Hey Screwjob,

You forgot the draft dodgers John Boehner and Mitch McConnell. Or do you have something against Democrates.

Screwjob15 - go take your meds and get some rest. Your posts are filled with a hatred that is unearned. Presidential leaders don't have to have served in the military, nor do their successors. And remember, Bush started these wars... the death toll is on his head.

Perhaps a little tutorial on 'Sam Adams' would be helpful and perhaps inspirational as he loved his country more than life and was prepared to instill in others that selfless love of country enough to cause them to rebel against the British in a little conflict called, 'The Revolutionary War!' Unlike Blumenthal, Biden, sociopath Obama and most of sociopath Obama's administration.

Here's to the real Sam Adams and to freedom!

May God bless America and the Americans who are willing to stand up for and willing to fight for our Constitution and are willing to expose and undermine those traitors whose only goal is to destroy our great Republic.

I agree with the posters that state that this doesn't seem funny at all. I'm not one of those people that think military service is essential to hold political office, but I do find it ridiculous and quite sad that people feel the need to lie about it, be they Democrats or Republicans.

As for the poster who stated that President Obama started two wars, frankly, I think you're an idiot. It was Bush who started those two wars, and Obama who inherited them. Revising history does you no favors, and only shows your ignorance. I wish he would end both wars now, but I'm realistic, and simply pulling out would be a disaster, not only for the U.S., but for Afghanistan, Iraq, and the entire region.

Finally, I'd like to say that, although this story is such a non-issue, this is a story about VP Biden, where does Obama figure into this?

Barry the incompetent boob Obama, the chickenhawk who never served a day in uniform, has (so far) sent 443 U.S. service members to their deaths in Afghanistan on Barry's watch. That is more than the total lost during the years 2001 through 2006. Barry is quickly closing in on the 2001-2007 total of 475.

This headless chicken in the White House shows his fondness for the military by taking his second vacation in a month instead of laying the wreath at Arlington National Cemetery this Memorial Day. Instead Barry has Joe Biden do it, send his vice president who is not even in the military chain-of-command.

Miserable failure Obama.

Wow! When "plugs" Biden makes jokes about you, you have become lower than whale-poop.

Bye Bye Blumenthal.

Exactly what part of this whole story is funny? Blumenthal lying about his service "in Vietnam" is offensive. Biden making a mockery of Blumenthal's dispicable behavior is just as unamusing. Tickled? Try outraged.

At least Obama hasn't started two wars to prove that he is a man's man.

No, Obama has Assassination Squad!

And the persecution of those trying to tell the truth about his administration, for starters.

Yeah, a real cool guy...

What is it with you people, anyway?

What can you say, they are truly DemocRats!

Barry the incompetent boob Obama is a chickenhawk who never served a day in uniform. That leaves Barry the headless chicken in the White House and the 5 top names on the presidential sucession list never served a day in the military.

And this is different from the Bush who pulled a Blumenthal and got into the reserves and then never even showed up there? Or perhaps it is different from the Cheney who got himself five deferments because he "had better things to do than serve"? At least Obama hasn't started two wars to prove that he is a man's man.

Biden has a built in right from wrong meter and he has no control over it. Much to the dismay of Obama.

While I think he is a pandering idiot his honesty is sometimes refreshing. Never in a million years did I think I would say this would be far better for this country if he was president.

Considering the Sleezstack bribery fiasco, it's not a far stretch to think that could happen.

Joe "hair plugs" Biden a chickenhawk who never served a day in uniform reminds us right before Memorial Day that Biden is #1 in the line of succession of Barry the incompetent boob Obama's chain of chickenhawks.

1 Vice President Joe Biden NEVER SERVED
2 Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi NEVER SERVED
3 President pro tempore of the Senate Robert Byrd NEVER SERVED
4 Secretary of State Hillary Clinton NEVER SERVED
5 Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner NEVER SERVED

And the "story" here is?

Later on he added "I have a bad habit of saying exactly what I think."

Bad habit? Are you kidding? I wish more politicians had that "bad" habit.

Realist201--get real: Blumenthal is running for the US Senate, not the House. "Midterms" are not really a factor. CT is a strange state, and he is the front-runner, despite his whoppers about service in Vietnam.

Our VP is mentally unstable to be in any office - he would be better suited as Bozo the clown.

I'm sorry. I just don't understand this brief article as it relates to the headline. Call me dense, but I don't see the "joke" here.
Perhaps some elaboration?

Biden is a strange one to joke about Blumenthal's lies since he was involved in a similar controversy. He gave a speech claiming to be a poor Welsh coal miner's son, then had to admit that he lifted the speech and the biographical detail from a British politician. Neil Kinnock is still smarting over that. That incident put an end to Biden's ludicrous presidential aspirations so one would think he'd remember it.

Mr. Vice President, normally I would be okay with anyone saying what they think, so long as they think before they speak. The ability to quip is not always indicative of a razor sharp wit.

Mr. Blumenthal suffers from an ailment common among politicians, a padded resume with an overwhelming case of narcissism.

Posted by: CausticWit | May 26, 2010 3:11 PM | Report abuse

Hmmm... Do I have no sense of humor, is what he said simply not a joke?

Posted by: daufiero | May 26, 2010 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Why not joke about it - the guy is a liar and a fraud and now that Biden acknowledges this, Blumenthal has no chance in the midterms. At least Biden is showing he has some honor and integrity....something Blumenthal lacks.
