Family Research Council founder hires a Rentboy

Updated 8:37 p.m.
By Sandhya Somashekhar
George Alan Rekers, a prominent anti-gay activist and cofounder of the conservative Family Research Council, recently returned from a 10-day trip to Europe with a male escort who advertises on a Web site called Rentboy.com, according to a May Miami New Times article that was lighting up the liberal blogosphere and gay media outlets Wednesday.

Rekers told the New Times he hired the escort to help carry luggage, not for sexual purposes, and that he only learned his companion was a prostitute midway through the trip. On Wednesday, he published a statement on his Web site decrying the New Times story as "slanderous."

"A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behavior because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on a recent trip," the statement said. "Contrary to Internet stories based on this slanderous article, following medical advice Professor George Rekers requires an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery. ... Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant."

A professor of psychology at the University of South Carolina and a Baptist minister, Rekers is a leading proponent of therapy to "cure" homosexuality and has testified against gay adoption. He is a board member of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, which calls itself "a professional, scientific organization that offers hope to those who struggle with unwanted homosexuality."

The escort, who was identified in the article by the pseudonym 'Lucien,' told the newspaper that his services were enlisted through Rentboy.com, which helps clients "find gay escorts, male escorts, gay masseurs, male masseurs and learn how to become an escort."

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said the group had no specific knowledge of Rekers recent doings.

"Reports have been circulating regarding Dr. Rekers relationship with a male prostitute. FRC has had no contact with Dr. Rekers or knowledge of his activities in over a decade so FRC can provide no further insight into these allegations," he said.

"While we are extremely disappointed when any Christian leader engages in the very activities that they 'preach' against, it is not surprising. The Scriptures clearly teach the fallen nature of all people. We each have a choice to act upon that nature or accept the forgiveness offered by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and do our best to ensure our actions, both public and private match our professed positions," he added.

David Pruden, a member of the board of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, said in an e-mail that Rekers "is a dear, kind man who has had poor health as he has aged and often finds it impossible [alone] to travel to professional conferences or meetings." He added that he has attended conferences where Rekers needed another psychologist or academic to travel with him.

"It is hard to imagine that he knowingly traveled off with a questionable companion with the full knowledge and support of his family," Pruden said.

Although the various sharp commentaries about this latest bit of self-exposure on the part of ignorant self-hating 3-faced biblethumpers who don't do the gay movement any favors with their poisonous presence are kneeslapping hilarious, there Ain't A Damn Thing Funny about the stultifying influence they have over others whose stupidity is nearly equal to their own. Some mega-hating preacher thing out in Tulsa a few years ago found itself also the recipient of Divine Justice, in addition to Trick-Tasting Ted & Lightbulb Head Larry the Lavatory Licker, instead of the package-swapping deal it tried to make by picking up a UC cop over to Oklyhomo City where the dear little hustler boys play. It's only when them slime-pit Konservative Reepuglytoad knob-slobbers get their flabby white ti*ts caught in a big fat wringer that their Death To Ho-mos ranting turns into a circle-the-wagons defense of their own vomitable kind. But things like that come in all colors. Me and one of my cousins were shocked speechless to see the halfpint burnt-black "SINS!" screaming "pastor" of my own mother's country church - which used to put on a hair-raising weekly fire/brimstone show to make Freddy & Jason cringe - making his way into a gay bookstore at 9th Street and E Street for a little laying on of hands not endorsed by ye olde bible. Sure killed our appetite for Quarter-Pounders! We should've ratted out the little charcoal briquet for its own 100-mile sneaking into Washington on the kind of mission it nearly stroked out screaming at the congregation they'd roast in Hell for - not that me or any of my kinfolk paid it any mind. If only more people would pay the same amount of attention [read: NONE] to the barfings of manipulative things like this - whether in the church, in print or on TV - this miserable failure of a Great Society would be lightyears better off. I'd then be deprived of more laughs that I've read on here than the entire runs of that godawful Seinfeld/Family Guy/Cleveland/American Dad put together, but there's plenty more subjects on which Reepuglycans make themselves complete stinking idiots. I can just about whiff the Foul Stench of one right now...

ATTN: STEPHENSONBILLINGSJOURNALIST
RE: May 6 Post

You ask why "homosexuals are so quick to pile on? ... This is between (Rekers) and his God. Why must you all intrude on that?"

Sir, the answer is simple and obvious in the extreme. Dr. Rekers has spent his career being "more than quick" to "pile on" or condemn homosexuals with nothing more to support his widely debunked conversion therapy than the hate festering in his heart and soul. Given his unrelenting attacks on homosexuals, is it surprising that victims of his vitriol might want to use this opportunity to show Dr. Rekers the light and love that God offers in equal measure to all his children?

Modern media offers an ever-more-transparent view into the lives of those who yell loudest about family values, gay agendas (what agenda?) and how gay marriage will destroy "traditional" marriage which hetrosexuals have done a dandy job of destroying without anyone's help. As we gain more knowledge about the private lives of pompous politicians and pedophilic priests, it becomes obvious that those who protest the loudest have the most to hide.

Indeed, Larry Craig, Dr. Rekers et al need look no further than the mirror to see what is wrong with the world. Self-loating appears to be more destructive than any of the so-called Deadly Sins precisely because those ripe with self-loathing take desperate measures to drag as many others as possible down with them.

I saw a report on TV last night that this George Rekers sent out a memo to every school district in the country advising them that any adolescents who thought they were gay or were questioning their sexuality could be "cured."

This memo was sent two weeks before his European vacation.

The Family Research Council, which he co-founded, has as one of its principal aims to make life hellish for gays and lesbians in America.

I can sympathize somewhat for someone in the closet who does not have the courage to come out. However, when the person in question makes it their life work to denigrate gays and lesbians (while secretly engaging in homosexual conduct), all gloves are off.

I truly hope that this will destroy his life. Not very "Christian" of me, but he deserves it.

Maybe the good professor used a Brazilian Portuguese slang dictionary. "Mala" is the Brazilian Portuguese word for suitcase or luggage. It is also Brazilian Portuguese slang for penis.

I guess he had to pay an excess 'luggage' charge!

According to the most recent interview with Randi Kaye, the contract called for "“ a massage for at least one hour each day of the trip in their shared rooms using the same procedures (“Lucien”) provided to George Rekers in Florida.”" Lucien described the provided "Florida' massage as a manual gratification.

Now if Rekers wants to claim under oath that he didn't have sex with that man. I'm sure all good Republicans will remember how happy they were to accept that line of reasoning a while back.

I certainly didn't mean to cast aspersions on astrologers. ;-) But yes, you are right: they have far more integrity than Mr. Rekers or, for that matter, anyone else at FRC.

Posted by: ricklinguist | May 5, 2010 10:21 PM | Report abuse

So the Wikipedia article on George Rekers has already been updated. Apparently (according to Wikipedia), so has the FRC Website:

"Subsequently, the Family Research Council removed the fact that Rekers was a member of their founding board from their web site..."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Alan_Rekers

Wikikpedia provides links to the pre- and post-"purge" of the truth.

So, let me reiterate:

The FRC has changed the truth, now that it is inconvenient for them.

This, from an organization claiming "scientific evidence" to support their various claims about homosexuality.

Let me repeat: The FRC has CHANGED THE TRUTH.

Just as they do when it comes to what it means -- and what it doesn't mean-- to be gay.

PLEASE stop lending credence to the FRC. They are NOT a scientific organization.

They are political. And they do much harm to good people who happen to be gay.

Homophobia is intolerance which brings no benefit. "Ex-gay therapy" is nonsense which was created out of homophobia so it's a lie. The Family Research Council is a hate organization for justifying intolerance against LGBT people. Tony Perkins said a nonsense comment by connecting homophobia and religion. If George Alen Rekers is gay or bisexual, then he must accept his sexual orientation or major problems will continue until he dies. If he's straight, then it's good that he's been discovered that he hired a prostitute from Rentboy.com

I believe him.

No, seriously.

The British Prime Minister, Gladstone, did the same kind of thing. He'd hire prostitutes, then spend hours *preaching at them* to turn away from sin.

He'd then flagellate himself with a whip, and describe in exquisite detail in his diaries how he'd managed to overcome temptation yet again, despite his lustful thoughts.

The relationship between Dr Reckers and his Rentboy may have been Chaste, completely Celibate. I can easily believe it was. Platonic? Er... no. Innocent? Not as such.

He rented a boy of the same age as his recently adopted son, and perhaps this is a way he could safely de-fuse any dangerous thoughts. If so, he is to be commended for taking such a responsible action where no-one got harmed.

It's just... really, really Kinky. Renting a prostitute and preaching to them for a sexual thrill. The whole chicken.

It's obvious from the report that the young man clearly has an emotional attachment to the older man, or has simply been brainwashed by the older man's emotional investment in his own denial, or is dependent upon the older man's financial assistance. How sad that the older man has clearly taken advantage of, and abused, the younger man's emotions, just as the older man has abused the emotions of people ad infinitum. Hitler did the same thing. It shows how one lunatic deeply convinced of his own tirades, and completely oblivious to his own insanity, can inflict harm on countless other innocent people. In my opinion, Rekers presents the worst of human nature, not because of his own human nature, but because he is a deceitful, hurtful, and miserable human being. I am so hurt by the emotional injury this man has inflicted not only on this young man, but on countless others. What a horrible person.

Just another "have it both ways" Republican. Its standard operating procedure for Conservatives.

Complain that the govt is taking away your rights by mandating health care coverage, but applaud the government trying to remove spousal rights (aka Teri Schiavo), or eliminating habeous corpus, or taping our phone calls with no FISA warrants, or issuing National Security Letters.

Argue that free speech should have no limits, and speech is equal to money, while by doing so the eliminate free speech from all those that do not have money, and spend decades trying to eliminate the National Endowment of the Arts, NPR and enact laws that restrict what can be said and done on TV.

Argue that Health Care Reform is Socialist while they applaud the Bush Administration enacting Medicaid expansion, and simultaeously propose a Medicare Protections Act for entitlement recipents while they argue against entitlements.

Or argue that the Constitution should not change while they propose Anti-Gay marrieage amendments to the Constitution.

You get the point. The list just goes on and on.

So Dr. Reker is just following Republican protocol, demonize that which you partake, but lie about it until you die. Deny any contradiction, just scream the people who point out your hipocracy down.

Dr. Reker is a closet back door spilunker that is too stupid to realize that going to a site like RentBoy would expose him. He thinks he is above it all. Just like all Republicans, hence the concept of a Republic versus a Democracy.

An open letter to conservatives:

Dear Conservatives,

If you are a male conservative and you enjoy fondling another man's weiner, then it is probably NOT a good idea if you speak out about same sex relationships.

Just a suggestion.

Thanks!

WTF? Are all of these conservative leaders gay?

Is Sarah Palin gay?

Ohh, that might actually be kind of hot. Sara Palin and Anne Coulter together.

I can handle watching both of them as long as they don't try and do something stupid like talk.

Dear Republicans and Conservatives - please pay close attanetion. All your leaders are hypocrits - every single last one of them. And then they run and hide behind either the flag or the bible.

Hear ye, hear ye. The GOP is as gay as Zorro, the gay blade. They are as gay as Liberace. They are gayer than Freddy Mercury. They are gayer than...the gayest thing on earth.

And yet they hide in the closet and call people names. And they lie. And lie. And lie.

That's your GOP. Gay liars afraid of themselves and hiding in the closet with their gay escorts.

Excuse me, Mr. Rekers, I could not help but notice you have a little bit of Rentboy residue on your chin. Must have been when that bag slapped you in the face.

Later Dobson's No.1 was also found to be gay.

Birds of Feather.

Little wonder so many closet-queens, pederasts, adulterers, draft-dodgers, and traitors show up in the Gay Old Pervert party.

Posted by: iamerican | May 5, 2010 6:28 PM | Report abuse

Boy, there sure is a pattern emerging, isn't there? The people who seem to be most vociferously anti-gay somehow end up playing footsies while in bathroom stalls, or seeking the services of male prostitutes. Maybe we should all be looking very closely at those who speak against gay people the loudest. What is it they say about protesting too much?

wow, it's just perfect.

I wondered how he ever found a site like that--I mean, most of us are web savvy, but how do you find sites like "Rentboy"?

but by being the guy who's "doing God's work amongst our homosexual brethren," he gets all the cover he needs to cruise pretty much the whole world in the name of "good works." like I said, wow. just imagine the twisted mind that goes to the trouble of creating such an elaborate cover, a nationwide organization, to hide the fact that you like boys instead of girls. what a sick world he musta grown up in. and what a sick mf he must be.

(btw, I got a bad back too. I don't think to go to escort sites to help me lug my laptop.)

Rekers is obviously a very sick man and in need of some sort of program to help him find a cure.

The article states that Rekers found out halfway through the trip that Rentboy was a prostitute. I don't even want to think about exactly HOW he found out.

I'm certain the minister spent the entire trip trying to turn the boy around.

I am really glad that the state of Florida paid this creep 87K to help build their case against gay couples being allowed to adopt. Maybe he spent all his earnings at RentBoy. Can we please stop giving The "Family Research Council" and "Focus on the Family" any credibility now?

Posted by: marSF | May 5, 2010 5:28 PM | Report abuse

With this hypocrite at the helm of the Family Research Council, will the Post and other media outlets please stop going to that organization for opposing quotes on all stories regarding gay rights?

POSSIBLY UNREPORTED IN THE NEWS: Lucien,a male escort with RentBoy.com, was so thoroughly disgusted by Family Research Council co-founder George Alan Rekers' sweaty chubby pawing hands, that he formally swore off all future prostition. Lucien stated that "he will never again sodomize a psychotic BOTTOM PIG like George Alan Rekers."

Think this story will even last 1/1000 of the time the Pedophile Priest story inundated every TV news show, and was the lead story of every newspaper in the world ? Like Hell. Just as it was never mentioned that there were many Protestant Ministers and Rabbis in prison for the same offense.

Is he lying? I think not. He hired a strapping young man to handle his package for a few days, yes?

Posted by: dkp01 | May 5, 2010 5:12 PM | Report abuse

He was trying to cure his nagging heterosexuality. There's nothing more to the story than that.

I feel very sorry for the rentboy. At least he was earning an honest living, whereas Rekers was in the business of promoting hatred and cruelty. I can only hope that the rentboy makes good money, both from selling his story and later from being more attractive to clients, by virtue of his gossip!

So they don't have red caps or bell hops in Europe? Unless this guy is extremely wealthy, I find it hard to believe that he is willing to pay the salary, transportation, food, and lodging of somebody for ten days just to have him handle his luggage. Doesn't pass the smell test.

Posted by: warren5 | May 5, 2010 4:01 PM | Report abuse

These right-wing hypocrites keep prostitution websites and airport bathroom glory holes in business. Meanwhile, law-abiding and tax-paying gay Americans can't get married or adopt a child???

Posted by: EmilSarcasian | May 5, 2010 4:01 PM | Report abuse

So strange because there are photographs taken at the airport after the couple's return from Europe, clearly showing that Rekers was the one handling all of the luggage while the male prostitute stood nearby, not lifting a finger.

Posted by: homer4 | May 5, 2010 3:56 PM | Report abuse

It has long been maintained by clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals that virulent homophobes (particularly men) harbour their own homosexual impulses. If ever proof were needed that this observation is indeed true, this case represents that truth in spades.

Uncharitable as it may seem, there is nothing – absolutely nothing –I enjoy more than the sight of a hypocrite being taken down by his own activities.

Nobody hires a male prostitute to handle his luggage, particularly a senior member of two major anti-gay organizations. Already, Rekers is engaging in a frantic and misguided effort at damage control, trying to explain away the fact that he went on a 10-day holiday romp with a gay prostitute who advertised, among other things, the size of his endowment and the fact that he would do “anything” he was asked to do. But Rekers then saw fit to change his story – now he claims that he hired this young man so as to be able to “save” him from the error of his lifestyle!

Remember John Paulk? Paulk was the erstwhile poster boy of the “ex-gay” movement, and also a prominent staff member of the “Family Research Council” (FRC). He was photographed at Petes’ bar (a gay pickup bar) on DuPont Circle, chatting up another gay customer and asking for sex. Paulk engaged in the same attempts at obfuscation, first claiming that he needed to use the restroom, and then claiming that he merely wished to observe the “lifestyle” he had once led. He was fired by the FRC after his tawdry explanations collapsed under their own weight, turning both the FRC and himself into a national laughing stock.

And so it is with Rekers. When all is said and done, this man is utterly bereft of any redeeming social value whatsoever.

He ought to at least stick to his story. At first he said he had no idea this was a male hooker, and just needed him to carry his bags (yeah, and what what price for ten days? What does a multitalented Rentboy go for per hour nowadays, anyway?). then he said his whole idea was to hire the guy just to lecture him for 10 days to try to get him to change his ways. One wonders if the first excuse didn't float, so then he tried another. Nice plan, lecture the male hookers for days on end, while renting them, converting them one by one for Christ. Glory hallelujah. Sure his story (stories) holds (holds) water, no doubt about it.
