Obama drone joke: Was it offensive?

Everyone agrees that President Obama was funnier than Jay Leno at the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday night. But this joke is inspiring some backlash:

"Jonas Brothers are here, they're out there somewhere. Sasha and Malia are huge fans, but boys, don't get any ideas. Two words for you: predator drones. You will never see it coming. You think I'm joking?"

"You have to wonder why in the world the president's speech writers would think it was a good idea to throw a joke about predator drones into the president's speech during the White House Correspondent's Dinner, given that an estimated one-third of drone casualties, or between 289 and 378, have been civilians," wrote Adam Serwer at the American Prospect.

"Let's be honest, fellow progressives, we'd be all over Bush if he made the same 'predator drone' joke Obama told last night," Philadelphia Daily News' Will Bunch tweeted.

Salon's Alex Pareene says the joke wasn't appropriate because Obama told it:

The joke mighta worked, and certainly would've been less offensive, coming from anyone else. It seems like a no-brainer that the people directly responsible for tragedies should not deliver jokes about those tragedies. That's why Mel Brooks can tell Hitler jokes and Germans can't.

Drone attacks in Pakistan have killed hundreds of suspected insurgents since early 2009 -- but they have also killed civilians and stirred up animosity towards the U.S. in Pakistan.

President Bush was pilloried for making light of the lack of WMDs in Iraq at the 2004 White House Correspondents' Dinner. Does Obama deserve similar treatment?

You have got to be kidding. WHO comes up with this skit? There's nowhere in the joke he mentions anything about "killing". Kind of a push-poll, isn't it? Do you guys actually read English?

Well, I'm all in favor of Progressives being honest for a change. But I'm sure as hell not one of them, so I have no reason to be timid about this. This "joke" just ratcheted the President up a notch in my estimation. Maybe there is, after all, something in his character that did not come from Chicago or Harvard.

Offensive? Well, it's one of the older jokes in the book. Not the predator part but you all know what I'm talking about. The correct question would have been is it funny? As far as offensive goes, if it's not a rancid race joke then I don't see how it could be.

better: How about an active sex offender who knows the right people to stay out of jail and not be charged with a crime... who threatens to molest YOUR child?

LOL. Har! Har!
Oh, Funny. Funny.
Are you people serious?

If Obama was not the Commander in Chief who gave the order to deploy the predator drones that killed hundreds of innocent women and children, it would be easier to accept.

I understand that he wants to protect his daughters. So did those whose children were exterminated by predator drones.

I was never an Obama critic, but this changed my mind in a way that it can never, ever go back. He's mentally ill. His followers are just that; "followers".

I don't want to freak you out, but,
THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES!

To those who defend this humor;
Would you tolerate sex offenders
making jokes about their victims?
Hitler joking that he would
send you to a gas chamber?

Did you hear Obama's response to the "birthers?" He said something to the effect, "when you're born, they, they, they give you a piece of paper that cost about, that cost about, cost about this much." Obama held up three fingers to make his point. Then, Michelle Obama said this about those nasty "birthers":

My Open Letter to the Obama Administration on the Predator Joke:

I was disappointed that extra-judicial murder is now considered a laughing matter by this administration. I was hoping that the military tools I had spent 25 years developing for this country were to be used to enforce rule of law, not circumvent it. Those predator drones were intended to gather surveillance data so that suspects could be apprehended and brought to justice, not murdered by remote control. You are committing an act of terrorism and deserve to stand trial for war crimes, specifically "the wanton destruction of cities, towns and villages, and any devastation not justified by military, or civilian necessity" in the International Criminal Court. That would be rule of law, peace prize winner. Tell your joke to the ICC.

I don't think it was offensive. His speech was basically attacking the lies from the right about him being weak on terrorism, the crap from the birthers and more. It may have been a poorly written joke but it fit the mood of hitting back. The right can dish it out, but they can't take it and all of a sudden they are going to flip flop from their strong on defense and say it was wrong? Give a break. After eight yeas of Bush bungling cowboy crap it's sort of refreshing having a President that can make fun of himself and those attacking him? He took too long to start striking back is the only thing I see wrong.

I can find humor in many situations, but the fact is, Obama has declared the right to execute anyone deemed to be an enemy of the state, regardless of where they are in the world, and the chief weapon in these illegal, unethical, and rarely accurate attacks is, of course, the Predator drone. If Obama wants to present himself as callously disinterested in the lives of the hundreds of civilians killed in such attacks and as a petty tyrant who would kill for the most petty reasons, he will find that much of the rest of the world will take his joke at face value; after all, many a Pakistani, Iraqi, Yemeni, Afghan, etc. have a relationship to the American president that begins only when a drone cruises into their village and indiscriminately massacres their relatives.

As far as I'm concerned, humor is an open field; ANYTHING can be fair game: death, murder, disease, terrorism, war, rape, race, gender, etc. etc. etc. I'm not the chief diplomat for the US, nor the Commander In Chief of its armed forces, though unlike our President, I am at least mature enough to pick my audiences very selectively when indulging in more "offensive" types of humor. To quote someone from another site "there's just something significantly more malevolent about black humour coming from a man holding a loaded gun."

I can only hope that this incident will be widely discussed and help to show liberals, progressives, and others with left-leaning inclinations that Obama IS NOT ON OUR SIDE. No matter how insane, racist, and reactionary the push-back from the GOP gets, it does not make the neoliberal and neoconservative policies of the current administration a sane alternative, as Obama's numerous drone murders clearly illustrate.

Say, aren't the Jonas Bros. Christians??? Perhaps that is why Obama, noted lover of Islamofascists thought using a Predator on them was hilarious? Or what if he had used the joke for the SW borders of America and taking out the coyote-gun-drug-illegal runners? Would that have been funny to his La Raza friends??? Or the TEAS? After all this group in the WH and the MSM were praying that the Muslim bomber in NYC was a white TEA. Oh well, not so funny huh?

Offensive or not depends on through which context one views the joke. Fathers of daughters have winked and made threatening jokes to potential suitors since the invention of civilization. This time honored harassment by fathers was the presidents intent. In that context it is funny. From a political context where the president is using drones to take out not only enemies but their families, wedding parties, and even an occasional American citizen without due process...not funny. I would have advised the president that he leave this joke out but too much is being made of this. A more direct political attack on the presidents policies regarding the use of drones would be more appropriate and effective.

He's just trying to be edgy, not what most of us are looking for in a President.
Might provoke another bombing or two by offending groups directly affected by such drones. No big deal. Might even be able to temporarily blame them on "types of people" who don't agree with Obama's policies. Anything to get this violence-tag off of the violent ones and onto Rebublicans, Independents and awakened Dems.

Not offensive to me and shouldn't be to anyone else. Wish I could say it is offensive because nobody on Earth has more contempt for what the Messiah is doing to us than me. I look for ways to bash him but I can't on this one.

Posted by: larrycroft | May 4, 2010 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Come on people. It was a joke, at a time and place where jokes were appropriate. The fact that the drones have killed people is instrumental to the humor. If the punch line had been; "two words for you. Pencil and paper!" there would be a post about his poor sense of humor.

If a father tells his daughter's date; "I have a shotgun", it's funnier if he really has one, and even funnier if he's cleaning it at the time. If he's the former VP, THAT'S FUNNY!

Why are we talking about the President's JOKES, for Pete's sake?

Why aren't we discussing whether any President, this one, the last one, should, or legally can, order the extrajudicial execution of someone suspected of being hostile to the United States, in a foreign country, with whom the United States is not at war?

Isn't murder illegal, regardless who orders or commits it? And don't scream "they are terrorists!" because, first and most obviously, many of the Predator victims have not been terrorists, or any kind of combatants, but women and children, people celebrating weddings and births, people, like Afghan policemen, who were on "OUR" side of the conflict in Afghanistan. Second, it wouldn't matter: Congress has declared no war; the United Nations, though it may have in some sense sanctioned an amorphous police action in Afghanistan, did not void the Geneva Conventions (to which we are signatory, and which are therefore part and parcel of our OWN law) governing the conduct of a "lawful" war. The Conventions prohibit killing civilians, extrajudicial killings of people who are engaged in no hostile action themselves, nor threatening any imminent hostile action... if we SUSPECT someone of terrorism, or any crime, the lawful means of dealing with him is to attempt to capture him by lawful means, try him, and convict him, and THEN we can punish him. Terrorists are criminals. They are not soldiers, and we are not at war with any nation, or so we have been told by our government, when it didn't want to treat suspected "terrorists" as prisoners of war. If they aren't soldiers, they are criminals. We have laws for dealing with criminals.

Where in the Constitution is the President granted the right to order people killed without trial, without any declaration of war, where they are NOT engaged in or imminently threatening any hostile act against the United States (and would present no credible threat to the United States anyway)?

We should follow our own laws.

Hey Dre7861,

You wrote, "It's just more overblown GOP hysteria."
I don't think anyone on the GOP cares at all about this joke. I am conservative and you would probably classify me as "Republican" and I don't know anyone who thinks this was offensive. In fact, if you read the comments here you will see that it is liberals who tend to be offended because this is the type of thing they expected from the previous occupant at the White House.
Liberals cannot believe that they helped elect a President who has essentially carried on all of the previous admins policies as it relates to fighting the wars in the middle east.

I don't care for any of the President's domestic policies; but he was joking...this whole discussion is centered around the overly Politically correct in our society -- i.e. Democrats/Liberals.

I think you need to re-think your comment.

That said, like Reagan, Obama's joke was just a joke. Additionally, it was very funny. Get over it.

In fact, his entire speech was hilarious. We should be thankful that he can tell a joke because he's not much good at anything else.

It absolutely was offensive, but I'm glad he said it. Now we know who he really is. According to various sources, over 300 civilians were killed by drone attacks while Obama has been in office. That he takes this fact so lightly that he would joke about it tells us much about his character. He has made it abundantly clear that he does not care that these people died in vain, and on his watch. His lack of empathy here rivals his predecessor. So much for reaching out to the muslim world. I never really believed in Obama the way others did, but I thought he would at least be marginally more humane than Bush was. It seems I now have reason to doubt this assumption. Assassination plots against U.S. citizens, indicting whistle-blowers who exposed goverment malfeaseance, caving into the insurance and drug companies while putting together a pathetically weak health-care bill, futhering the war in Afghanistan, not fighting for real financial reform--because doing so would offend his criminal friends on Wall Street. So far this is the Obama legacy.

Why not ask Jon Steward about it. The Daily Show took time off from whining that the other guy FOX is "biased" to write the jokes for Obama. American journalism has degraded to stand up comics berating talk show hosts about not being fair unbaised journalists. Obama is too much of a narcissist to believe that he can do any wrong. Can somebody at least get him off the TV. He's on at least once spometimes twice a day. The media adores the guy. So we're stuck for at least another 2 1/2 yrs with an egomanic empty Prez and forever with the biased (both sides) journalists. Only a liberal who is anti American and hates this country would have thought that was funny just like you think it is funny that Obama sends drones to kill a few terrorist and a bunch of innocent people. No wonder these folks hate us. Who can blame them when you have the US President making jokes in front of the National media talking about using drones that have killed so many of them.
After last nights latest terror attempt why do we even accept Muslim in this country during war with them. Does that make sense to try to kill them one day and let the same people enter the US the same week. Until we get serious about this war and stop allowing the same people we are fighting into this country then we will never win this war.

Anyone that wants to see a joke about a father using all the tools at his disposal to protect the virtue of his daughters as some sort of great faux pas has already crossed the line of reasoned discourse, so there is really no point in trying to argue with him or her. (I mean seriously, look at some of the comments. One guy tries to make it racial, i.e., Obama threatened to kill white boys, another compared it to Bush HYPOTHETICALLY threatening to kill the Dixie Chicks [last I checked the Jonas Brothers had not come out against Obama's policies]).

Some conversations are worth having. I have a different view of how successful Obama has been since he came into office. E.g., my retirement portfolio likes being worth nearly twice what it was just prior to the stimulus package. My friends that depend on selling advertisements for a living are telling me in no uncertain terms that the economy is far better today than it was when Obama took office. I think that being able to destroy the world 3-4 times over while retain significant second-strike capability is sufficient; i.e., that we do not need to pay to maintain a nuclear stockpile that will allow us to destroy the world 15+ times over. I think that finally doing something to deal with healthcare, i.e., succeeding politically where every president since Eisenhower (Democrat and Republican) has tried to some extent and mostly failed, shows his acumen.

However, I can understand that there are reasonable people that see the world differently than I do, and I can talk to them. It is the crowd that refers to the President of the United States as obozo the clown... well that is simple pure, unfounded, irrational hatred. Why do people talk or listen to people like that. Even if you agree with their partisan tilt, do you really think that they are representing your position on issues... are they really worth talking to... do you try to have reasoned discourse with infants... because that's what they are--the public space's equivalent of infants.

MrDumberton's explanation of the joke is exactly correct. It is comforting to see all the comments that what is actually offensive is the left wing media's meuling applause for it but their feigned indignation if it were to have come from a republican. The joke was stupid on two levels. First why is this Muslim anti American president bragging about killing innocent people with drones. Bush would have been kicked out of politics with such an insensitive statement about killing with drones. Where are the liberals screaming about innocent men, women, and kids like they did when a bomb went bad under Bush. You dont have to worry about a bomb killing innocent people because Obama has a drone which has no pilot shooting anything that moves. Kids and females are killed daily by these drones instead of letting Muslim Men kill their families and females along with all Gays the US drones do it for them. How nice.
The first thing I thought of was how this had to make the Jonas brothers feel knowing that some Anti American Muslim would warn them about his anti American daughters that no one and especially not a celebrity would be interested in getting in bed with the most corrupt family ever to live in the White House. When Obama made the comment I almost puked thinking about it.

With the likes of Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton out there, making statements with the progressive liberal world is touchy at best.
How is it that a comical statement about blowing up some "white" boys is acceptable coming from an African-American? African-Americans have complained publicly using the people like Sharpton and Jackson about ill advised treatment of visible minorities. But Obama and his handlers of sensitivity training find it acceptable to slag a bunch of white boys.
If you cry tears of treatment one way you had better not reverse the roll the other.

What would the reaction be if the Jonas Brothers joked about flying a plane into the White House to kill Obama?

When you are president and you consistantly actually kill children with predator drones it really shows how far you are removed from reality when you joke about killiing children with predator drones.

Maybe the deaths are neccessary but if they know the bad guy is in the house they know the kids are as well. It's all about Obama though so he could care less.

John McCain's "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran", sung (sort of) to the tune of the Beach Boys "Barbra Ann", was funny, but look at how much crap he took for it.

What's truly offensive to me about the 0bama joke is not the joke itself, it is the fact that he is NOT getting crap from the same people who gave it to McCain.

And of course, we all know the reason for that.

Obama never responds or acts on real problems, he blames everyone else... Example; boarder security or the lack of response to the oil tragedy in the gulf, a mere 2 examples.. Not only are his jokes disgusting but he is a disgusting insult to this great country and those who have fought and died for freedom...

Would Bush have taken heat for this joke? Of course, because it would have fit the narrative about Republican's being war mongers.

As for Obama...I can't stand the guy, but the joke was funny. Threatening boys (especially boy band boys) to keep them away from your daughters is down to earth humor. Juxtaposing it with the powers of the presidency makes for a great joke.

Was it insensitive? Only if you are looking for an excuse to get your panties in a wad about something. Lighten up. If you want to be offended, check out the way he lies every time his mouth opens.

The different between the obama comment and the bush comment is that the liberals had been demanding that we get out of the war in iraq because it was started on false premises. In contrast the conservatives have not made an issue out of the use of predator drones previous to the correspondent's dinner.

In fact, I challenge everyone who was "offended" by the joke to argue that we do not use predator drones and instead put the lives of our soldiers in jeopardy by sending them instead of the drones.

It absolutely was offensive, but I'm glad he said it. Now we know who he really is. According to various sources, over 300 civilians were killed by drone attacks while Obama has been in office. That he takes this fact so lightly that he would joke about it tells us much about his character. He has made it abundantly clear that he does care that these people died in vain, and on his watch.

You're right -- I said the same thing about GWB's drones and about civilians killed when Israel retaliated against Hizballah in the summer of 2006. I also said it about Gaza and the deaths caused by Hamas hiding command posts beneath hospitals.

Human shields are illegal and a blatant act of cowardice. It's truly unfortunate when innocent life is lost, but again, those who deliberately place innocents in the path of harm bear a large share of responsibility for the tragedy that follows.

If anything, you should be more offended over The President accusing the Jonas Brothers (ages 22, 20 and 17) of potentially having 'ideas' toward his 9 and 11 year old daughters. The fact that hardly anyone here has mentioned that tells me it's all manufactured 'outrage' and is purely partisan in nature.

This must of been a time joke. Laugh when you got the time. The only joke is the one Obama pulled on all those young people who voted for him. Now their going to have to pay much higher taxes to pay for my healthcare since I'm approaching retirement age. Now, thats a GOOD joke. I thought these things were for the president to make fun of himself as all presidents have done in the past. This man is the most arrogant and condescending person I've ever heard speak, ever. Hence, I'm not suprised.

You have a hut in the middle of nowhere Afghanistan. You have Osama bin Laden in there with a 5-yr-old boy. Do you use a preditor to off the MFer or do you defer to the innocent in the room?
The answer is: do you win, or do you lose?
I don't like to lose, and I will gladly send flowers to the 5-yr-old's funeral. Annually if necessary. Get hard, people.

It was a joke and a fairly good one. I'm more concerned that the President is taking over industries and trying to dictate the minute details of everyday life to all of us while transforming us into his own personal socialist fantasy than I am with a joke about predator drones.

Posted by: MrLucasBrice | May 3, 2010 10:54 PM | Report abuse

The joke may be funny or not.

The problem is that if the president has so many talented people, they should be: developing ways to find people jobs, solving the problem in the gulf, protecting our borders, finding out why we have someone trying to blow up a car in NYC. He and his best people should be spending their time on those problems, not trying to be clever, or attacking his critics.

Remember to vote in November.

IT WAS FUNNY! I mean come on people the best humor ends up offending someone most of the time, thats John Stewart's Job! The greater issue is that raised about how President Bush would have been treated differently. Come on everyone it was the classic protective father joke, just made to fit the Presidency. Would it have been more acceptable if they had threatened the Jonas Brothers with the Secret Service, or CIA or something? I mean come on people! Can't we all just laugh at a good joke and move on, and not try to read more into it than there is. Should Obama be crucified over this (and this coming from a Republican), no, should Bush or any Republican if he made the joke, NO. It was a good joke, lets move on to more important things, like two wars, a natural disaster in the Gulf (again), an illegal immigration crisis, Iran, and many others. We have far better things to do with our time than criticizing the President for having read a funny joke.

Obama makes jokes of things that are deadly serious. It might be funny if he were a good president. His administration is a collosal disaster. I tried hard to be open-minded from the start - but he is making a mess of everything he touches, and so every time he opens his mouth, the last thing I feel like doing is laughing.

I guess we all need to read the book called the Art of War, a country is at it's weakest when there is division and fights going on within, the enemy/enemies best moment is to strike immediately.

We are an open book to our enemies, so Jonas Brothers joke is nothing compared to when a natural disaster hits, our troops are overseas, Teabaggers want to overthrow the government, our military are trying to help people who have succumbed to the disasters and we have already made ourselves vulnerable to any attack from abroad.

Like I said, too much emphasis on the ridiculous when there can be a lot more serious things for us to worry about, but this is America, and this is what America is about, more emphasis on the absurd and less emphasis on the real issues.

$0 money for health care to Americans, $Trillions for war and stationing military men abroad. People, don't worry where we are getting the money to pay for all of this, the Republicans can magically find ways to pay for the wars.

Ok... I am out ... for real this time.

The media can sensationalise, dramatise news and they (Republicans, Teabaggers) will take it and believe it more than that phoney Jesus they pray to everyday.

Until we have some natural disaster (floods, earthquakes, tornadoes) that take out 55% of the country I want to see these same folks practise what they preach and that is to adhere to their beliefs, less Government getting involved, after jobs lost, businesses taken down, get their medical aid on their own medical help with the major Insurance companies.

We have US military men in predominantly Muslim lands and they spew their antiMuslim comments in blogs, the radio and TV, go ahead, these folks over there are watching and it is only going to bring out more suicide bombers.

People need to lighten up and quit fussing over the petty stuff.

One way to solve the problem of detaining and prosecuting terrorists is to kill them where they sleep by remote control drones.

This is the "humane" policy our President prefers. Proud of him? I'm not.

It is honorable for a soldier to risk his/her life capturing a possible terrorist. It is putting your life on the line for what you believe. It is not honorable to sit in a comfy chair half way around the world and kill without warning by remote control.

I am all for "bringing terrorists to justice"... but not this way. I didn't like it when Bush experimented with it; I don't like it when Obama makes it the key offensive weapon in the war.

It is pretty funny about the blatant hypocrisy of the media. Funny, because most are now wise to their antics. And in knowing that, so goes the steady drip drip drip of a dying industry. People will pay for opinion and for objective reporting. But they won't pay for opinion poorly disguised as objective.

Note that contrary to your opening declaration ("everyone agrees that Obama was funnier than Leno..."): no, not "everyone agrees" -- both were not funny, both were, indeed, exceptionally offensive.

And this creepy remark by Obama about the drones was horrible. Just horrible. The man is a ghoul.

Obama has definitely messed up any chance of other blacks from getting elected to the White House in my lifetime (I'm hoping I have 50 years left). He has not been a President for all and people will associate that trait to all future black candidates, (as well they probably should).

I don't care about the drone joke, but anyone with 1/3 of a brain (this qualifier leaves a lot of people out of the mix) realizes that when it comes to the Lamestream Media there is a huge double standard as regards what a conservative can and cannot say vis a vis a liberal.

Basically, the press is intellectually inconsistent and dishonest for the most part.

I find Obama offensive. He is anti-American, pro-Islam, anti-free capitalist markets, pro-socialism/nanny state. Anti-deficit reduction, pro-spending. The man has serious delusion problems and is becoming extremly scarey; Obama is out of control. He seems to think he is a "rock star" and the next Messiah. God help us all.

PS: Obama is supposed to be OUR PRESIDENT....not a stand-up comedian. Unfortunately, he is more the latter than the POTUS.

I really can't get over this post. The last time I remember people talking like this they were swallowing pills with owls on them!

-----

What really scares me is that this President does not seem to be able to see what's coming at HIM -- and others who do not hew a hard-right line:

MR. PRESIDENT, ARE YOU EVEN AWARE?

All of those cell towers you see all over America -- and other nations -- are NOT all for phone calls.

Some of them are TORTURE TOWERS -- part of a nationwide microwave/laser radio frequency "directed energy weapon" system that is being used by operatives of the multi-agency Homeland Security-run "fusion center" network to silently torture, impaiir, and physically and neurologically degrade the functioning and well-being of extrajudicially, unjustly '"targeted" citizens.

And apparently, the genocidal use of this precision-targeted domestic weapon system to attack and harm U.S. citizens is being done WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE AND CONSENT OF CONGRESS or high state officials.

When I first heard it I didn't think it was offensive. But now, it does seem in pretty poor taste for the President of the US to make a joke out it. He doesn't have nor should he have the same latitude as a standup comic might have to make a joke like that. His words are carried around the world. Poor taste, and not well thought out.

I thought the joke was hilarious.

I do not think that Pres. Obama's love of war, his killing of civilians, his brown-nosing the military-industrial complex, his secretive government, his worship of the bankster criminals, and his unethical way of lying to the public, are as funny.

I mean, it's reached the point that people are more frightened of their own government than they are of any terrorists. The construction of a vast ring of concentration camps across this country, doesn't exactly reassure us, either! Looks like we must be prepared to defend ourselves and our families against the criminal government. Sad.

While maybe not outright "offensive", the "joke" was inappropriate.

There is a place for military humor, but for the President to make light of this very controversial program, without having the political will to discuss it in a speech to the country (why?),is simply poor judgment.

I don't rule out the possibility that drones might someday be used against our own civilians. From that standpoint it's even less funny.

The particular jokes don't offend me, it's the correspondents dinner itself, and the role of comic-President that has now been assigned him, no matter what's going on the in the world. For a President, there's always serious work to do--he should make time to make jokes when he's out of office.

Well, I am sorry but jokes of predator drones that in truth are killing many innocents now in Pakistan and to me personally are offensive when you have killings in a country that you are not at war with, isn't funny. I don't think they were funny when all the democrats decried that Bush was using the drones in Pakistan but now that Obama is doing it and increasing their use is acceptable now because a democrat is doing it.
Jokes about killings in a war area are never funny even from the mouth of Obama.

Maybe not offensive, but in very poor judgement. The President should not joke about his power to unleash weapons and kill people. Better left unsaid. There is more than enough controversy over the use of Predators and killing civilians already.

This joke was fine, it is a Joke, and Obama was very good in his joke delivery.

With that said:
Obama/Dems prove how there is little real difference between Dems and Reps.

That is Obama/Democrats prove how right-wing Democrats are, which means how they act for the benefit of Rich and Big corporations (Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Big Military, etc.) and NOT for the benefit of American people (Middle class) and thus what Utter Complete Lunatics Republicans are who are even to the right of the Dems.

After all consider these FACTs:

1. Obama/Dems ran on the promise of brining about Universal Health Care. And instead they passed a Joke of a health care reform which is neither Universal nor nationalized.

2. Obama/Dems ran on the promise of ending the Iraq War
Instead they have adopted nearly the same policies as the Bush Admin regarding the Iraq War. Can you believe this!
Here they ran on the promise of quickly ending the Iraq war and once in the office they adopt the same exact war-mongering
policies of Bush Admin!

I didn't find the predator drone joke offensive, but I did wince a bit at the joke about Eric Massa (he said something to the effect that he was tickled by him). Imagine for a minute that Massa's alleged victims were minors (male or female), or adult women instead of men. To joke about that would be almost unthinkable. We seem to think it's humorous when adult men are victims of sexual offenses or harassment.

If Shrub had said he wanted to waterboard Green Day or Hannah Montana, he would have been equally offensive. OK, maybe not for Hannah Montana, that is probably justified.

Oh, please. :) I once observed a juvenile judge (in Utah) in court as a pre-law student. When sensitive material surfaced, I stood up and excused myself, asking the judge if I needed to sign anything before leaving. He said no, but that I should leave a signed blank check. I smiled and said I would leave it at the entrance. The court laughed. He was kidding. I was kidding. Both knew that I was never going to leave a signed blank check for the judge at the door. Part of oral communication is context, tone, etc. Written communication is perhaps different. I think it is clear in everyone's mind that the president is not going to use drones on the Jonas Brothers.

Never mind the predator drones bit. His whole spiel bombed.

For a president who would want his children left alone, he seems to "use" them whenever he could.

It is true. Bush would have been slaughtered, and rightfully so, if he made the same remark. Of course, Obama's peace prize (poor guy, he had to settle for it, rather than his first preference: Physics!) gives him a bit of cover; so he may have thought.

Look, as relatively moderate Democrat (liberal on social, civil liberty and financial issues, conservative on military and security issues) I was able to laugh when GWB cracked wise as he crawled under his desk looking for WMD's, and the same goes for this. Because I am a liberal when it comes to social and civil liberty issues, I simply can not sanction the attitude of the PC cops who find this in bad taste - it's not, in fact it's pretty darn tame. Yes, people die from predator attacks, but for the most part those attacks are helping Pakistanis fight off a cancer in their midst. Plus, the world would be a better place if a drone missile wiped out The Jonas Brothers - a much, much, much better place.

Posted by: moderate01 | May 3, 2010 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Obama is every bit as reprehensible as Bush in matters of foreign policy, state secrets, and letting the military and intelligence industries have a free ride. It has been estimated that one of every three drone deaths are civilian deaths. But liberals in and around Washington really don't care about nameless foreigners being killed. They just luv luv luv their Obama.

I have found it impossible to laugh about anything involving predator drones after watching the Frontline special - Digital Nation - that presented the story of pilots who drive to work at an Air Force base north of Las Vegas to sit in front of a television screen that zeroes in on a person they aim to kill with a predator drone from 7539 miles away with the push of a button that coincides with the obliteration of the human image on the screen, after which they get in their cars to return home to a lovely dinner with their families. Lost my sense of humor.

I think it would have been better this way:

"Two words for you boys: 50 Caliber!"

or how about:

"Just one word for you boys: NAPALM!"

or how about:

"Just five words for you boys: High Energy Laser, Causing Blindness!"

For the Jonas Brothers, the good news is that apparently a) you never see the Hellfire coming from the Predator because b) it actually doesn't kill you, and later you cut a video to show the world nothing happened.

I have two daughters similar in age to President Obama's daughters, who are also Jonas Brothers fans. As a Father, I can can relate this joke and find it quite funny. Some of you readers out there need to lighten up. The joke simply pertains to fatherhood, and is not about predator drones.
Everything is not about politics people! The President is also a Father and has every right to protect his daughters, and joke about what he would do to protect them just as we done. He just happens to have access to better weaponry than the typical old-school household shotgun, so don't be haters :)

It's quite refreshing to have a President who also shows that he is also a human being like the rest of us.

Are all allusions to military/intelligence operations appropriate in the context of a joke of this kind? I assume not. In the light of the Pearl beheading, I think a beheading reference would be and should be considered offensive by most Americans. I think a similar case can be made against allusions to Abu Ghraib. In the light of the number of civilians killed by drones, I think the same should be said about drone allusions. The fact that Obama seems not to understand the problematic character of the drone attacks makes the allusion all the more troubling.

If Obama created the drones and it turned out we didn't need them at all and they had caused thousands of GI deaths and wasted our treasury, then his joke about drones would be in the same class with Bush joking about non-existent weapons of mass destruction. While as a parent I appreciate the humor, I still think he could have used a different example. Especially with all of the backlash that the drones have been receiving lately.

And the joke was a little bit weird, considering Obama's girls are minors, and the Boys are what..20-somethings. Is Obama condoning relationships with minors?

But the real story here is that if Bush made the smae comments, some liberal out there would have the argument that Bush was being insensitive to the people that lost their families to drone attacks. But with Obama they are saying that people are being too touchy-feely.

What's in poor taste about it is the suggestion that these young adults would be going after the elementary and middle school aged Obama girls. If you are a 9 or 12 year old girl and you hear this joke, what do you feel? Well at least for me at 9 or 12, it would have been an awkward sense of embarassment and vague sense of shame and a feeling there's something going on that I don't quite understand but I may have done something wrong. It's the kind of joke that would have given me one of those first feelings of, yes, there is this thing called sex out there and I'm going to have to deal with it one of these days. It's the kind of statement that shakes off one more layer of a kid's innocence. Not traumatizing but not the healthiest thing either, and certainly no kid wants to hear it coming from their parents. Similar to awful adults who ask children they've just met about their crushes and love lives, but just upped a degree. Totally common in our culture and maybe I'm uptight, but I didn't like it one bit when I was a kid and that's why I don't like it now.

If Obama weren't the CIC with the ultimate responsibility for ordering drone strikes that murder helpless, innocent civilians then maybe it wouldn't have been so offensive.

But he is and it was.

And the fact that Obama chose to tell it without apparently any thought at all shows JUST how "empathetic" he truly is.

It was a dad joke, stupid. and a really funny one.

Republicans who were just fine with Bush's horribly inappropriate jokes about WMD, etc, are trying to drum up some indignation. LOL

Posted by: AsperGirl | May 3, 2010 2:50 PM | Report abuse

I think the drone comment was somewhat funny, mildly out of line. The real concern should be the President's joke regarding McCain and a lack of id in Arizona. The President's comment of "Adios Amigos" smacked of racism to several people I have spoken with.

Posted by: MDCOUNSEL | May 3, 2010 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Incidently the reason why Bush's "joke" was so offense is that he based his rational for going to war in Iraq on the supposed fact that Saddam had WMDs. A war I might add that has drained our treasury, killed thousands of Americans and untold numbers of Iraqis. When there turned out not to be any WMDs in Iraq Bush did his "joke" not as "Oops I guess we f###ed that up" but rather as a mocking of looking for WMDs as if they never expected to find them, which many Americans suspected at the time was the WH true views.

Yes Predator Drones kill innocent people but then so do missles, nukes, guns and a whole host of other objects. President Obama never asked our servicemen and women to risk their lives looking for the Jonas Brothers in Afghanistan or Iraq; or went to war against another country because of family slight. And while not a fan of the Jonas Brothers, I seriously doubt if someone was hunting them with Predator Drones that they would deliberately hide in locations where innocents are sure to die in huge numbers.

WTH? Quick. Call your doctor and get the antidote for oversensitivity. At the very least, take a couple of deep breaths. Jeez...

Well WP, the polling seems to show how far you have strayed into the lazy side of thinking. First, you should think whether it makes sense or is an actual issue before sending yet another so-called "provocative" comment into the information stream. In today's world, there's always someone willing to say the ridiculous or make a stupid claim. Just because they do that does not mean that WP needs to pick up that poop!

Come on WP, give a bit more attention to selective content not simply letting any off the wall comment get into the paper.

I can't til the near future when we can't make a joke about anything ever again. It'll be a lot like... Germany!

Posted by: voldenuit123 | May 3, 2010 2:45 PM | Report abuse

If Obama had stood up and sang the National Anthem, the wingnuts on the right would have accused him of doing so to garner votes, or having done so without paying the copywrite owner his fee. I thought the joke was cute and so did every sane person who was there. The Jonas Brothers were honored that the President even knew who they were. Anyone who feels the joke was insensitive is a neanderthal and it is a big difference to the jokes Bush made about WMD to legitimize the lies he and Cheney gave so they could invade Iraq.

Tasteless, Clueless and Crass

Posted by: jimkearney19761 | May 3, 2010 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Oh, for crying out loud. Stop looking for things to get angry about!

President Obama's comment wasn't about politics, foreign affairs, national defense, or anything else governmental.

It was the anguished cry of a parent held hostage to the music -- and boy musicians -- favored by his pre-adolescent daughters.

He was playing the outraged dad: "Don't even think about coming around my daughters 'cause I'll pull out the heavy guns!"

It was funny. Stop overanalyzing.

Posted by: haveaheart | May 3, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

I think the joke was off color. But, I also think -- maybe I hope -- that the use of the drone is exaggerated. That is, the left's blogs have contended that Obama, for example, authorized the killing of an American citizen without an apprehension and/or trial. I find that hard to believe, even if the American is aiding an enemy. They also claim near daily uses of the drone over Afghanistan and Pakistan.

So, perhaps Obama was making light of the view that we are widely using the drone at his direction given that he rarely authorizes the use of it.

There is nothing funnier than a Nobel Peace prize laureate joking about dealing death to civilians with predator drones .

Posted by: borntoraisehogs | May 3, 2010 2:37 PM | Report abuse

For goodness sakes people, lighten up! Who among us haven't make light of something that may have referred to a person or a thing that may not seem funny to someone on the other side of the world? These people who take the time to nitpick every word that these people utter should put their services to a constructive cause. Life is too short for so much drama and not enough laughter.

Posted by: racam | May 3, 2010 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Maybe he shouldn't have used predator drones specifically in the joke--he could have said Airborne works for him, instead, or something like that. But there's a difference between a joke that goes, "Haha, if anyone tries to date my daughters I'll harass them," and one that goes, "Haha, you remember that reason we gave everyone for getting into this war? Whoops."

Posted by: dkp01 | May 3, 2010 2:35 PM | Report abuse

It was a JOKE! Get over it. What happened to just pure entertainment!

Posted by: Beverly7649 | May 3, 2010 2:35 PM | Report abuse

It was a great joke, but people being offended by it is even more hilarious. The world is much more beautiful and at the same time horrible place than we think, and if we can't laugh even as a distraction, then we resign ourselves to the grimness of it all.

Posted by: deltaterp | May 3, 2010 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Instead let's look at the joke from a Sarah Palin prospective. The Jonas Brothers are ages 22, 20 and 17 and Melia and Sasha are 9 and 12. So is it so funny to have a father want to attack adults who make suggestions about statutory rape against his daughters?

Of course like the Letterman comment this all goes under humor. And come on the President was at a setting in which he was expected to tell jokes. If this comment came up during a Press Conference then it would be another matter. Those who are offened by the President's jokes I fear spend their entire lives offended that the man is living. It's just more overblown GOP hysteria.

Oh good grief. When did the Post get appointed hall-monitor? This is just being a tattle-tale... and having NO sense of humor.

Was the joke in good taste? NO.
Would he have been wise to have omitted this tasteless joke? YES.

Does it matter At All? NO.

Frankly, I also thought the overreaction to McCain's "bomb bomb bomb" song was also preposterous.

Yes, the predator death count is horrific. All war is horrific. Should there be NO humor with a war theme allowed any longer?

The Post is now competing with pre-teen siblings sharing a cramped back seat on a long vacation drive:

"He looked at me!"
"No I didn't!"

Posted by: Zino | May 3, 2010 2:33 PM | Report abuse

This deserves ink? Puhleez.

By the way, Obama's deadpan "I'm not joking" was the single funniest moment of the whole speech.

Posted by: joebanks | May 3, 2010 2:32 PM | Report abuse

I think this is not a question of whether it's offensive or not. It's the fact that the president was the one who made the joke. If Jay Leno had made it, then we could debate whether it's in poor taste or not. But this is right up there with Bush's jokes about WMDs in the midst of a bloody, awful war started because of a so-called imminent thread from nonexistent WMDs.

Unfortunately, Obama's joke could even be made becuase there's been so little debate in the United States about the use of Predator drones -- and the U.S. policy of targeted assassination.

That so many people don't see the connection to the dark road that United States foreign policy has taken is troubling indeed. If the discussion of the "joke" begins some real discussion of the policy behind it, then the president's joke-writers will have done the nation a real service.

as Archie Bunker once told Gloria in reference to deaths caused by guns..."would you feel better if they was to jump out a window?"....we are getting a bit judgemental...what i find offensive is that kim kardashian was there...she is a porn star.

You have got to be kidding! He was jokingly warning these kids off his daughters! How in world could anyone take this seriously. The only people who might possibly have a legitimate beef are relatives of people killed by predator drones and thats a real stretch.

It would have been REALLY funny if he said the drones were launched toward Palin's helicopter by the Wolf Department.

Posted by: kingsbridge77 | May 3, 2010 1:57 PM | Report abuse

The joke was funny. Often jokes with poor taste are funny as this one was. However a president should refrain from making jokes that come at the expense of others, especially a reference to drones during war time. Bush would have been slaughtered if he had said something so callous, but then the media and the liberal left have a different set of rules for this president. The fact that rarely does any media report about the wars, and certainly little protesting against the wars as was the case during the Bush years, shows how hypocritical liberal democrats are.

Posted by: poppysue85 | May 3, 2010 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Was the predator joke offensive? Maybe. But that's not the issue.

Every brand of humor will offend a least a few people. Some people dig dirty jokes.. and some don't, for example.

Humor is a matter of personal taste. Not everybody will find something funny.

Get used to it. :-)
