Obama "fantasizes" about bursting the bubble
By Scott Wilson
FREMONT, Calif., May 25--President Obama usually begins his outside-the-Beltway appearances with a shtick about how good it is to get away from Washington.
He likes the monuments, he says, and he loves the fact he has no commute (something that resonated with his California audience.) And, of course, the people are nice. But it's always good to get away, he says, adding Wednesday that "it's good to be back in Northern California."
At an event in this East Bay city, Obama gave a little more detail about why and, in doing so, gave a glimpse of the yearning he sometimes feels to burst his thick security bubble.
Obama told an audience of employees at solar-panel manufacturing plant here that, 17 years ago, he and Michelle spent their honeymoon up the road in Napa Valley. "We drove down Pacific Coast Highway," he said, wistfully. "This morning I was fantasizing about going out and renting a car."
"But," he deadpanned, "I was told that would cause a stir."
Instead, Obama bordered Marine One in San Francisco and flew east over the San Francisco Bay amid low storm clouds.
Not a convertible on PCH with his wife by his side. But his aides described an awesome aerial view of Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge, and city's skyline as they flew in.
