Obama Memorial Day speech rained out

Updated 1:17 p.m.
By Anne E. Kornblut
ELWOOD, Illinois -- President Obama was rushed offstage at a Memorial Day event after a massive lightning and rain storm opened up on the open field where he was to speak.

Obama told thousands of guests at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery to get to a place of safety.

"Excuse me, everybody listen up," Obama told the crowd. "We are a little bit concerned about lightning. This may not be safe. I know that all of you are here to commemorate the fallen... What we'd like to do is if possible have people move back to their cars and if this passes in the next 15-20 minutes I'll stick around."

He said he hoped the ceremony could resume later. "But we don't want to endanger anyone, particularly the children, in the audience," he said. "A little bit of rain doesn't hurt anybody but we don't want anybody struck by lightning."

Obama was then whisked into a motorcade which sat, unmoving, for several minutes, unable to proceed in the heavy rain. Eventually the ceremony was canceled on account of the weather.

Before his scheduled remarks, Obama lay a wreath near a cluster of headstones as light drizzle fell. By the time he reached the podium, the skies had opened up. The storm sent visitors scattering, and threatened to ruin plans that were already under fire: Obama had been criticized by some veterans for skipping the most prominent Memorial Day service in the country, at Arlington National Cemetery.

Pres Obama spent the weekend attending to BP's oil disaster and to Memorial Day services at Abe Lincoln Nat'l Cemetary.

That's a lot more than many presidents have done at this time of the year.

He's also pretty busy seeking solutions to the two wars and the deep recession that were the result of 8 years of Republican rule.

As a 3rd generation military man with 20 years active service, I voted for Republicans every time, just like my dad, who fought in WWII, Korea and VN.

But the GOP is now filled with rascist hate-filled know-nothings who are too easily led astray by extremist entertainers like "shock jocks" Beck and Limbaugh.

I thank the Washington Post for giving us all a forum to share each others thoughts and feelings. It's really shocking to read some of these posts, but it's important to understand these hatefilled, simple-minded obstructionists.

The Tea Party spawned by Fox News might soon be a real danger to our liberty. The Cheney/Bush presidency did more damage to our Constitutional rights than Osama bin Laden could ever wish for.

I support Pres Obama in his efforts to return America back to the values espoused by our Founding Fathers.

For those of you so given to protection of Obama and allegations of "unfair" criticisms, take BP, The VA, The Depts of Highway Safety and Transportation [Toyota],and the biggest national conduit of corruption, "The Money Depot," AKA The US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and his "special commission" to recruit for his admnistration those of the Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/Bi-sexual tribes, the same he will IMPOSE upon the ARMED SERVICES OF THE UNITED STATES, WHICH HAPPENS TO BE THE MOST RESPECTED INSTITUTION IN THE UNITED STATES?

Within our Armed Forces, as opposed to "snobbery," protocol is defined as "the happy way of doing things."

ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETARY has functioned as representative of that culture of The Armed Forces, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the majestic monuments, the traditions, the choreographed ceremonials and ritualistic symolism so meaningful to those of us of that proud institution, and that is why this NATIONAL cemetary has that specific reverence, not to diminish significance of those dedicated to the Armed Forces nationally and locally.

Practically as well, the leadership of our US Government and the Armed Forces in that central location and their participation marks that reverence of tradition.

So Obama was willing to "stick around?" VP Biden officiated at those ceremonies at Arlington and his spouse Dr.Jill Biden was complimented for ALL her efforts on behalf of military families; VP Biden's address was the most moving of recent history, second only to President Clinton.

Did the Obama take in church services of that radical preacher back in Chicago, their long time pastor? What about their close buddy with the felony conviction as a slumlord instrumental in the acquisition and financing of their private home?

In sum, Obama isn't lookin' good! Many of us saw the folly of "CHANGE" and "HOPE," empty promises of one with nothing to offer to even suggest capacity, and here we are as he "takes responsibility" for a plethora of dysfunctioal agencies "on his watch," his "appointees," and systemic failure of "government."

Were those having been in attendance at Arlington early Memorial Day summoned back to witness the "address" of OBAMA upon his return? NPR broadcast on Friday a segment in which gays boasted they were "more fierce" than the "straight guys" of THE ARMED FORCES, and that Hitler, himself a homosexual preferred these qualities of his "Storm Troopers." So much for "the presidency" of Obama!

It sounds like many of these critics would be happier if Obama declared another war. Maybe they missed the chance to enlist in Bush's wars for revenge and need another chance. Actually, I'm sure the next big war will require the draft to be resumed, so then the cocky mouths, or perhaps their sonss or grandsons getting murderd will give them something more meaningful to think about. My father and my uncles were all veterans of WWII. None of them are buried at Arlington- does that mean they are less deserving of honor? Nicely put.
This is a very emotional subject due to the recent years of the war. Blame has no place here.
Here are some interesting facts:
1. Veterans are filling Cemetaries at the rate of over 1800 per DAY with only 10% being laid in National Cemetaries. This number will eventually decline as many are WWII and Viet Nam Vets.
2. There have only been 2 Presidents who have not served in the military since FDR. They are Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama. That realy does not mean anything negative but as stated earlier, today is an emotional day.
The least he could have done is attended Arlington as it is our most cherished Shrine for Veterans. He chose not to and it backfired. Perhaps an omen signifying the advent of change. Never serving and publically stateing his faith does not bode well together.

A man of character would have been present to honor the nation's men and women who served in wars for this country's freedom at Arlington National Cemetery. BHO has displayed his lack of respect and his arrogance by not attending this event as he sends more soldiers off to war. It is ironic that it rained BHO out of the Abraham Lincoln Cemetery near Chicago. A president our current elected official claimed to emulate almost turning in his grave over the poor judgment this man has demonstrated. The sooner this BHO is out of office the better for our country.

Yet another tragic decision by the President. Everything happens for a reason. With his approval ratings dropping like guano in a cave, he decides not to speak at Arlington to Honor those Veterans who paid the highest sacrifice any American can do, Die for their country.
Yes, he was doing the next best thing by doing the honors at Abraham Lincoln National but the stint didn't work out. Yet again, another poor decision by this administration led by him. Ever wonder if GOD has a plan in this?
This is going to be yet another poor decision he has made to drop the ratings. It is not standing well with those lucky enough to have served and survived and those serving today. It is also not going to stand well with those who have lost loved ones who have served.
Four years is a snap and this administration has opened the eyes to many Americans, regardless of party. All I can say is please stop shaming America Mr. President. You are making us weak economically, militarily, un-united, and dishonorable to our fellow Americans. Stop the hatred. Unite and vote the power out now. Weaken this train wreck. Then in just two years we can vote the most sarcastic, poorest decision makeing President in the history of Our Nation. United We Stand, United We Are. Remeber when that meant something.

Billw3,

Despite being wrong and misinformed, your statement makes no sense on the face of it. Memorial Day is not a Christian holiday and is not about one particular faith. I hope you are also aware that there are Muslim Americans, as well as Americans from many other faiths or even non-faith, buried at Arlington.

Your statement is not only false but deeply offensive to the memories of fallen veterans who gave their lives for you.

Reagan spent several of the Memorial Days of his Presidency someplace other than Arlington, George H. W. Bush NEVER went to Arlington on Memorial Day (he spent them at his home in Kennebunkport) throughout his Presidency and, most recently, George W. Bush spent several Memorial Days of his Presidency someplace other than Arlington, one time in Texas.

Obama went to Arlington on Memorial Day last year and this year is commerating the day at another national cemetery. So, in essence, Obama is NO different from most other recent Presidents in not spending every Memorial Day at Arlington. So WHY is he the only one criticized for it?

I'm confused by folks who thinks the only way to show you care is to do things in a superficial manner. Therefore, if he's not in Arlington then he doesn't care about the troops. As if Arlington cemetery is the only place the war veterans is laid to rest. Obama will be criticized for any thing he does because whatever he does will never be good enough. This is a running narrative that his foes with the help of the media play on to discredit whatever Pres. Obama does.
