Obama to create commission to investigate gulf oil spill

By Juliet Eilperin
President Obama will establish an independent commission to investigate the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an administration official who asked not to be identified.

The panel, which will be established through an executive order, will resemble those that investigated the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger and the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, the official said, and current and former federal officials will be barred from serving on it.

Several lawmakers, including Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), had been pushing for such a panel and had introduced legislation in an effort to force the White House's hand on the matter.

What a manly man, this Obama. True grit - like Boy George. His favorite crutch is, "We're going to look into that." Oh my... he's so John Wayne, don't you think? A real tough guy - like a wet noodle.

Liberals need to get a grip on reality. No matter how many bureaus of regulators we have - posturing as if they have a clue what is going on - there is no way to prevent every possible accident from happening. That's life. I'm sick of these DON'T LET A CRISIS GO TO WASTE knee jerkers - posing as leaders while they merely point fingers.

here we go .. more cover up ..ala Warren Commission and the JFK assassination the 911 commission that omitted WTC7 .. we know this will lead to nada ..

Just curious .. the Brand Name of Gulf Coast Shrimp or Sea Food ... that brand name that has been damaged beyond fixing imo .. i wont buy anything from down there ...

who pays for that ? Is the CORPORATE ENTITY BP on teh hook for damages to the Gulf Coast Shrimp and Sea Food brand name ?

BP could have stopped the leak weeks ago by imploding the well .. but would have not been able to re-enter the bore hole and would have had to take large losses on teh the sunk costs and started drilling somewhere else to tap those reserves .. instead BP CHOSE to not implode the bore hole and instead tried and failed over and over in capping ... resulting in massive pollution ...

Who pays for that damage .. not clean up cost and fines as that is obvious ...

who pays for the brand name destruction of the fisherman of the Gulf ?

Who does Obama represent the Corporate GIANT BP or US Citizens being reamed ???

another line in the sand Mr. President ...
are you with us the People or are you with them the CAptial Class and their blood sucking tentacles called Corporations ?

amnesty for telecoms, single payer, the anti-war president, not going to bail out fat cat bankers ... and now what ... BP over fisherman ...

we see you as you are ... an economic hit man with the USA as your target ...

sacrificing US sovereignty for the greater good of the planet ... a corporate owned ... IMF banked ... global governance prison planet.

a 1960s decade is upon us .. the People are pushing back .. we are getting individual rights loving politicians in office ...

Power to the people and their individual rights ...

DID BIG OIL'S LISPY TV LADY SPILL THE BEANS ON GULF BLOW-OUT?

That lispy lady in the pantsuit touting "advanced subsea technology" has disappeared from our TV screens since the Gulf oil blow-out -- but could it be that the technology she promotes is responsible for this disaster?

The technology involves using a single oil drilling platform to service multiple wells up to 40 miles away. Do the economics of this "advanced subsea technology" dictate that redundant safety systems are eliminated as well? Did each well feeding the Deepwater platform have its own cut-off valve -- or did the system rely on a centralized safety system? If so, that would explain why oil continues to gush from three distinct locations on the sea floor.

Could some enterprising reporter get a straight answer to this question from Big Oil? If not, perhaps a reporter could contact Dr. Jan Merta, an expert on such systems who works for the Canadian government.

As American citizen victims, we demand to see ALL the video of the leaking blow-out preventer, leaking wellhead and the string of blown-out pipe with its numerous leaks. The only video BP released last week is of one leak at the end of the pipe far from the leaking wellhead and leaking preventer which is under much more pressure and leaking profusely. If the wellhead and preventer were not leaking, BP would have released video of them. BP’s oil salvage activity at the end of the pipe has been a total science fiasco and is a diversion of attention from the main leaks at the preventer and wellhead.
Secretive, arrogant and powerful BP refuses to release the videos of the total wellhead damage and President Obama is complicit in the cover-up.
We have the right to see the total damage and leakage so scientist and engineers can truly evaluate the situation.
President Obama you have not taken control of the spill, you have allowed secret BP to call the shoots from the beginning to the present. The “best scientific minds in the world” came up with one good Idea to stop the flow according to Mr. Hayward but he will not tell the public what the idea is and is continuing on BP’s present course of failure. BP has their secret program and has not taken positive action with known Marine Pile Driving Technology to stop the oil flow permanently. Furthermore, you have failed to take charge by not stepping in to control BP’s operations with a STOP THE Oil FLOW TASK FORCE of FBI, Corps of Army Engineers, scientist and private marine construction contractors to begin taking positive action to stop the oil flow permanently. Three months from now (hurricane season) the ecological and economic burden will be so great that the United States of America will be catastrophically bankrupt.

BP and Obama are lying SOB’s and to add further insult they suggest that the American public is so stupid that we can not estimate the flow of oil. Of course, we need to see video of the TOTAL damage before we can do that! Tell those SOB’s to produce All of the video of the leaking wellhead, preventer and pipe string. TODAY!

The President also has guidelines for "Free Press" and I am grateful. He has many irons in the fire. Is it 'media blackout' or why have I seen only one report (there may have been others) BP, British Petroleum answers to the Oil folk at Halliburton, do they not? Most of us know their track record of years, the Iraq problems during the George Bush's Administration. Richard 'Dick' Cheney as CEO of Halliburton & does he still have his hands in it? Halliburton is POWERFUL. GOOGLE: "Halliburton+Cheney". Whoever is on this commission, will need protection, around the clock.

Hmmm...the events in the gulf seem to indicate that when it comes to the people's natural resources, the global corporate is in charge.
Hmmm...

So when does the federal government take control of this situation? On the news tonight, it's all BP officials, with Obama officials not to be seen.
BP has its agenda, the people's trust is invested with its federal officials.
So far, at least, they've been nothing more than concerned bystanders. Appointing commissions, pointing fingers, and doing very little to solve the leak.
Shame on them for acting so. They have our trust, and they have let us down.

Never let a perfectly good crisis go to waste!

It certain that whatever his "commission" reports, Obozo will use the opportunity to raise someone's taxes, increase spending on his favored political allies, or promote some ridiculous Progressive scheme.

Instead of spending 60 million on this commission, just spend 60 minutes and watch the last edition of "Sixty Minutes" -- they did the homework and Urkel's commission will only come to the same conclusions.

Yep, this sure is Change We Can See.
Or, should we say change in the sea?
What a disappointment this Obama administration has been.

Who authorized the exemption that let BP NOT use the safety devise that is required, world-wide on all other deep wells? A Bush appointee? A "get government off the backs of bizness" ideologue?

The Bush Administration's gift that keeps on giving. One disaster after the next. Let us pray!

We KNOW what happened.

We know WHY it happened.

The only "report" that will suffice is the police report that the heads of BP are in jail for criminal negligence and murder.

6 months to prepare the report

6 months to forget the report

When BP ask ideas to stop oil spill, also I sent my opinion in order to close that oil well. Now BP says that within 7 days can close the well injecting slurry.
I think that BP could have done this much time before but waited untill now hoping to save the well and money, increasing so this enormous pllution.

According my opinion, in order to stop the oil spill, you should introduce into the spilling pipe a flexible metallic pipe and put it down under the spillage, than you must pump through it slurry and concrete mixture with high pressure pump
