Obama urges work on immigration bill 'to begin ... this year'

By Scott Wilson
President Obama told a White House reception Wednesday that he wants "to begin work this year" on comprehensive immigration reform, warning the audience that securing the legislation will be difficult but possible.

Addressing an audience celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the Rose Garden, Obama said, "America's diversity is America's strength." That, he added, is why he has spoken out against Arizona's recently passed immigration law, which has raised concerns of racial profiling.

"We can't start singling out people because of who they look like," he said to applause. "That's why we have to close the door on this kind of misconceived action by meeting our obligations here in Washington."

The Arizona law has given more urgency to the push for immigration reform, as have the imperatives of election-year politics.

Although the White House did not name immigration as a post-health care legislative priority, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) said last month that he would seek a bill this year, ahead of energy legislation that is more fully developed.

Reid faces a difficult election in November, and Latinos make up a significant segment of Nevada's electorate.

Obama suggested recently that immigration reform would not be possible this year, drawing some criticism as a result. His comments Wednesday appeared to reinforce the view that passing a bill this year is most likely impossible.

But Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who had been working with Democrats on a bill, has criticized the White House for keeping alive the idea of securing immigration reform this year to energize the Democratic base. Obama has called a handful of Republican senators seeking support for a bill, although none have committed to one so far.

"Of course it's going to be tough, that's the truth," Obama told the crowd Wednesday. "We need bipartisan support. But it can be done, and it needs to be done."

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's longshot victory in 1862 over the French at the Battle of Puebla.

Obama noted that the birthplace of the Mexican commanding officer in that battle, Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin, is now located in Texas -- a way of illustrating how connected the United States and Mexico have been culturally and historically.

Obama will host Mexican President Felipe Calderon for a White House visit and state dinner - the second of his administration - in a few weeks.

Obama has done nothing for AMERICANS! He's been pandering to ILLEGALS all along. When the truth comes out, we may find that he like his Aunty is an ILLEGAL himself! No wonder she's still here even after two previous deportation orders. Why?

What we have now is an all out INVASION from the south by an army of 20+million peasants. (Not 12 million, a number that's over 7 years old)

Hoover, Truman and Eisenhower all deported millions of ILLEGALS with far fewer resources than we have now so there is no reason we can't get rid of these ILLEGALS except for the crooked politicians who are too C.S. to do the job!

Those elected who are pushing for AMNESTY to reward ILLEGAL INVADERS are TRAITORS to this country and its citizens. Politicians who vote for AMNESTY for these criminals are declaring WAR on AMERICAN CITIZENS who will have to pay the bills!

Change? You can keep the change, I'll keep my guns, freedom and the Constitution which Kenya Boy so despises!

This new bill better not let any person that is here illegally get a free pass to be here. Instead of weakening our immagration laws they should be made harder. The US should have an airtight border like Canada does, so we know everyone that comes here and what their buisness is. Our National security has to get tougher to protect all of us citizens from any forign threats coming into the USA. Remenber that we are still in a war with terrorists, does anybody want them to get into our Country so easily. It is a matter of national security.

Why does it seem ridiculous, if a certain ethnic group is responsible for a specific illegality i.e., breaking the immigration laws of a soveriegn country, that they should be profiled? Come on!!! When the flashing signs along Rte I95 tell us to be vigilant for a heightened terrorist threat, we are not looking for people that have long blond braids, grow tulips, and wear wooden shoes. We are homing in on Middle Easteners... PC or not!.

Why should these plus 12 MILLION ILLEGALS be allowed to come ahead of the laws of our country when they have no right to be in the U.S.A. to begin with as they take GOOD JOBS FROM AMERICANS for scab wages of their LAW VIOLATING EMPLOYEERS? The FEDRAL GOVERMENT MUST ENFORCE OUR LAWS. President Obama, comply with the words of the oath of office. AMERICANS, SPEAK OUT TO YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS! VOTE IN NOVEMBER!

As a Californian, I can assure you that you will have voter revolt in November if DC tries to thwart the will of 83% of the nation that supports the AZ law calling for enforcement of federal immigration law requiring nonUS citizens in the US to carry papers. This was a NYT/CBS poll folks, so it's reliable. Do not reward lawbreakers who jumped to the head of the line while millions of would be immigrants played by the rules and are still waiting to join this great nation. To all the border states, send your billion dollar bills for illegal education, medical costs, and prison costs to DC to spread around the pain to non-border states. Ask DC to resettle the 12 million illegals in border states among all 50 countries, and then enjoy having your child's school use scarce tax dollars to teach in Spanish while we pander to illegals. Enough!

President Obama is on the wrong and unlawful side of this issue.
The only reform necessary is the elimination of the loophole which allows pregnant illegals to enter the U.S., have their now-citizen babies and use these babies as excuses for an entre' into the U.S.
Otherwise, just enforce the current federal laws and protect our national security as he swore to do at his innaugration.

The political problem for Latinos is that they don't vote. Thus it's been easy to discount their leverage for affirmative change.

Moreover, unless they find some way before November to manifest their determination to make their potential votes count, they will perpetuate this cycle so adverse to their interests and to the progressive aspirations that they share with other Americans.

Most analysts agree that the Dems will lose House and Senate seats in November. How will losing seats to enforcement only Republicans improve the chances of passing immigration reform after the midterm elections? The simple answere is that it won't and Obama knows it. He is throwing the immigrants under the bus.

Obama's people are having 20,000,000 American citizenship cards printed up at taxpayer expense, at this very moment, to hand out to all the illegal immigrants in America when the Obama/Reid/Pelosi regime grants them AMNESTY.

Those American citizenship cards are different from the usual cards. On the backside of the cards is a Democrat voter, registration form. The instructions command the owner of the card to fill out both sides or the card is invalid.

Those Obamatons think of everything!

Mexican illegals were granted an amnesty and American citizenship in 1986. The reformers promised America it was a permanent fix and that there would never be a need for more "comprehensive" reform.

Let's take them at their word.

Arizona will do whatever the Federal government tells the State to do, because States do not have the power of secession (the voluntary withdrawal from a voluntary union of free, sovereign and independent States), which is the only check and balance of power by the States over an oppressive, runaway centralist government.

Likewise, all those States that passed laws to nullify parts of the Federal health care legislation will bow down to the will of the Federal government in the end, because they have no power to resist the centralist tyranny.

Abraham Lincoln abolished the right of secession, 150 years ago, when his army invaded and violently overthrew all State governments, reducing them to a compulsory union of colonies, held together with a bayonet.

Today, States only have power to do what the Federal Government will allow them to do, through the U.S. Supreme Court, Congress or Executive branch. Competition brings freedom and today there is little competition between States and none with the Federal government.

The voluntary union of “free, sovereign and independent States” guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence of 1776 and the Treaty with Great Britain in 1783, which is the supreme law of the land according to the U.S. Constitution, Article VI, was abolished by Abraham Lincoln’s military rule. The United States is now a compulsory union of colonies under a centralist government, like they were under King George of England.

The Southern States had more right to withdraw from the United States in 1861 than the 13 colonies had to secede from England in 1776, because England created the 13 colonies, but the United States did not create the 13 States; the 13 States created the United States.

Like the Southern States, the United States today would have the right to secede from the United Nations, because the United Nations did not create the United States; the United States created the United Nations.

Wouldn't it be wise to try enforcing current law to see if it actually worked before reforming it?

Enforcement is the duty of the Executive branch ...

never mind.

Obama's idea of Reform . Grant Amnesty to 30 Million Illegals. Let the 11 million or so Illegals go free as he feels we can't deport them ( including his Aunt ) then Leave the Borders wide open so they can come in and murder legal taxpaying citizens , or rape and plunder the Populace . Then he can campaign for the Hispanic vote which will be forthcoming with little or no objections. Yessir, we don't need a genius to make a plan like that, just a corrupt Muslim Socialist

Of course, everyone must know, by now, that the word "comprehensive" is code for AMNESTY and American citizenship on the cheap and easy.

AMNESTY and American citizenship, together, are proven failures as immigration reform. This policy is simply a huge reward for the army of chronic lawbreakers that is currently occupying America.

Every American should be 100% against that. As it is 60% to 70% are. Will Obama oppose the will of Americans yet again?? Is he working for Mexico now??

“which has raised concerns of racial profiling”.

Why is there an assumption that law enforcement is going to knowingly violate rights and open themselves to civil action? The US Supreme Court has already determined that ethnic background alone is not probable cause for stopping someone for immigration status. Just as not informing suspects of their Miranda rights is going to get them thrown out of court and negate their work, so would stopping someone due to ethnic background. If they lacked that much common sense they should have a career in politics, not law enforcement.

Of course most of the people detained are going to be Latino. Of the 1,206,457 apprehensions by Dept. of Homeland Security in 2008, 98% were Latino. If most were Chinese National with 0.2% of the illegal population, then I would be yelling racial profiling because it would be statistically significant.

Simple fix!

Let's implement the same immigration laws as Mexico. Oops! There are none as they don't want anyone coming into Mexico unless you have a passport and visa and money! Then you can expect to be stopped at any time while in Mexico and made to produce proof you are in that country legally. If you cannot provide said proof you will be fined and/or jailed and then deported.

Also, let's properly identify those aliens who enter our country for the purpose of living here. When they sneak over our border, they are an illegal alien not an immigrant; when their student visa or work permit expires and they refuse to leave, they are an illegal alien not an immigrant!

An immigrant is someone who enters this country legally, usually through sponsorship, and goes through the lengthy process of paperwork and verification necessary to stay and work here.

Let's enforce the laws on our books, strengthen our borders and enforce our laws and only allow those persons who have the proper paperwork in place to enter our country.

In order to see a basis for immigration reform Let us scrutinize the aunt of President Obama, how she came here, how she stayed, how she was made permanent and then base the law on that. Simple.

Posted by: statistician | May 6, 2010 12:44 AM | Report abuse

Obama's immigration reform effort is nothing more than a cheep ploy to buy votes for the mid-term election.

Obama choses not to enforce existing laws, his solution to this problem: pass new laws.

Obama and the Social Democrats' strategy, is to demand more and more from the private sector and working famlies, so he can provide handouts to Unions and Immigrants who will trade votes for their own enrichment.

Corporations must answer to shareholders, customers, public opinion, and the government. Obama's government thinks they are omnipotent, that they know whats best for us, and they think they answer to no one!

Obama's unaffordable promises will ultimatly send angry mobs to the street like in Greece. In the end Social Democrats are perfectly capable of making promisies with Other Peoples Money, but their policies are killing the US jobs and the US wealth required to deliver on their empty promises.

YOU are the joke, "bubbette1"! The REPUBLICANS created the problem to get slave labor for their corporations and it has been hanging around for YEARS.. OF COURSE, the numerous presidents of "The Party of NO" have never TOUCHED the issue they created! They want the LEGAL immigrants to THINK they're the "wonderful" party so they can con them into voting for them, just like they do to all the ignorant gullible!

Everyone knows that it takes the Democrats to clean up all the messes the Republicans make. So, what's new? Where have you been the past 10-15 years??

==========================================

ROFLMAO!!! WOW Maerzie, you seem to have everything figured out. Republicans want the legal immigrants to think they are wonderful by calling for racial profiling? Interesting logic. It seems you logic of the events has had the exact opposite reaction.

So let me ask you a question, what are the Democrats thoughts on illegals? To provide them amnisty? Even the illegals who commit felonies? Let me tell you how stupid liberal ideas are on immigration. In SF, my home city, they have a sancuarty law. This law allows illegals to report crimes with out fear of being deported! LOL!! While I appreciate the idea, its intent was for those that were seeking political asylum from their home country during civil war. And now get this. Some Latino wants to extend the law (purely for votes) to say that even if an illegal gets arrested the police are NOT to inform the Federal authorities until they are proven guilty. So if the illegal immigrant is found not guilty they would be set free!! LOL!! Tell me how this makes any sense!

And liberals just calling them undocumented is overtly admiting that you refuse to want to deal with the issues. I cant wait for this debate! It is going to be great to see how many more Mexicans come running at our border when Obama proposes offering amnisty, free healthcare to any illegals who want it!

First secure the border and build both separate fences as originally designed by Rep. Duncan Hunter. Next audit every business enact a permanent law using E-Verify, to eject illegal workers from the work sites nationwide. DEPLOY FEDERAL TROOPS PERMANENTLY TO ASSIST US BORDER PATROL. We protect other foreign countries? Protect and serve the American people? Every employer caught hiring illegal aliens goes directly to mandatory prison. Make it a felony to enter this sovereign nation without permission.Have our worthless politicians draft the exact law used in Mexico. Boycott any state, county or city that boycotts the great, courageous state of Arizona . If the federal government does not enforce the 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli bill, then every state should have a right to propose its own illegal immigrant law. In conclusion send a message to Washington, starting with Pro-Amnesty majority leader Sen. Harry Reid--that all incumbents who steal taxes from the American people, to support illegal aliens will be removed from office. Make yourself known to Washington at 202-224-3121

When someone is here illegally and usurping our tax money while committing that crime, so what if there's racial profiling?? If the person is legal, he simply shows his papers as we all have to do innumerable times for innumerable reasons! Legal people will simply be allowed to go on their merry way! The criminals will be arrested, as they should be!

The Republicans are to blame for this fiasco because if you look back into our history, THEY are the ones who imported these droves of illegals for cheap labor for the corporations! However, they are no longer "cheap" labor. Try to hire an illegal to clean your house. They DEMAND $25 an hour. The illegals who are stealing the labor jobs from LEGAL Americans get hired simply because their employers can pay them CASH and not have to monkey with all the paperwork needed for legal workers. That's why the banks and other corporations LOVE this illegality and ENCOURAGE it by their "PRESS 1 for English", "Press 2 for Hispanic"!!

When ever did all the LEGAL immigrants who were struggling have the telephone operators saying:"Would you like English or German or Polish or Italian, etc.??"

NEVER!! Because THEY were LEGAL!!

Racial profiling is necessary because the Republican corporations have let this disaster of freeloaders get WAAAAAAY out of hand. They are CRIMINALS!! GET RID OF THEM!

Posted by: Maerzie | May 5, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

There is no racial profileing. It just happens to be that it is Mexicans who are the people who are breaking our immigration laws. Is this what America wants to have, people breaking our laws before even becomeing an American citizen. Just follow the laws that were set down by our Government that has been elected by all citizens of the USA. No exceptions. A law is a law. I wish that our borders were more secure just like Canada's borders are.

Pass HR 1868 that would end the Anchor Baby route to citizenship. It would require at the time of birth for one parent of a child to be a US citizen to transfer citizenship. Instead we get an estimated 400,000 Anchor Babies a year followed by 18 years of welfare and legal defense fees paid for by the taxpayers.

Our government needs to start doing its job and protect the interests of citizens and taxpayers and not illegals.
