'Furious' Obama talks to Larry King about BP, immigration, LeBron James

By Garance Franke-Ruta

President Obama told CNN's Larry King Wednesday that he is "furious at this entire situation" in the Gulf of Mexico because "somebody didn't think through the consequences of their actions," according to advance excerpts of the interview, which is set to air Thursday night at 9 p.m.

But the president, who seemed calm as ever, also emphasized that his emotions were secondary to his actions.

"I would love to just spend a lot of my time just venting and yelling at people. But that's not the job I was hired to do. My job is to solve this problem. And, ultimately this isn't about me and how angry I am. Ultimately this is about the people down in the Gulf who are being impacted and what I am doing to make sure that they are able to salvage their way of life," the president added later.

Obama told King he would still support off-shore oil drilling "if it can be done safely" and despite the "unprecedented oil spill" in the Gulf. He also said that the recently expired shallow-water drilling moratorium would not be extended, contradicting a Thursday e-mail sent out by the Minerals Management Service field supervisor for the Gulf of Mexico. The Department of the Interior also said the MMS official was mistaken and the moratorium was not being extended.

As for stopping the spill, BP has the "best equipment" to handle the situation, the president reportedly said, and it was their responsibility to do so. "BP caused this spill ... [and] they're responsible," he said.

"My job is to make sure they're being held accountable," he said.

"They have felt the anger, but what I haven't seen, as much as I'd like, is the kind of rapid response," he said.

On Thursday, the Obama Administration sent BP and other legally responsible companies a preliminary bill for $69.09 million for response and recovery operations relating to the spill, and announced the firms would continue to bill billed regularly so that the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund was reimbursed on an ongoing basis.

Obama and King also discussed Arizona's immigration law, Israeli's raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla and NBA stat LeBron James. According to CNN:

* Obama said that Israel "has legitimate security concerns" in Gaza, but the Israeli blockade "is preventing people" from pursuing economic opportunities. This week's incident regarding the flotilla is a "tragic situation," he said. We need to "use [it] as an opportunity" to advance the Middle East peace process.
* Obama criticized Arizona's immigration law, warning that, among other things, it could lead to "50 different laws in 50 different states." Border security is a federal concern.
*Obama said it would be a "wonderful story" if NBA star LeBron James stays in Cleveland, but he needs a team and coach "that he respects." James is a "wonderful young man" and an "amazing talent," he said.

He's right "somebody didn't think through the consequences of their actions". He's that somebody! He's not thinking of the consequences of allowing more than 20 million ILLEGAL INVADERS to remain in this country nor is he thinking about truely stopping the flow from across the border.

Or worse, he is! A subversive would/could use this ILLEGAL INVASION to destroy this nation! Divide us from within all the while encouraging more to come and promising them anything to get their illegal vote to keep himself empowered!

Kenya Boy should be impeached for willfully failing to do the job he took an oath to do. Protect The United States from all enemies foreign and domestic! Invaders are enemies as well as those who help and/or employ them!

Obama wants us to think that nothing about the oil spill is his fault. WRONG. BP is responsible to report to MMS its progress/problems -- and they did. About six weeks before the explosion and death of 11 workers, BP reported they were having problems on the site that blew up. Nothing was done by Obama's appointed administrator (Birnbaum?). When she was fired (allowed to resign) she said that she was not able to carry out the "progressive progam" she was supposed to do. So an incompetent CEO Obama appointed an incompetent manager and when hell breaks loose, incompetence shows.
.........Then Obama's appointed EPA czar, Socialist Carol Browner, took 11 days to make a decision when Louisiana's governor Lindall asked Browner to build 20 small "islands" or berms in front of the bayous' marshes. Her decision, "there was no study done on the effects," but she approved six berms, with the feds paying for only one and Louisiana paying for the rest. That was changed later, but this is another case of an incompetent Obama picking an incompetent manager and getting awful results. Back to Chicago with Obama and all his unfit managers.

I'm beginning to think we're stuck with one of the most incompetent boobs ever. Makin' Jimmy look good!

Now why didn't Barack call on Medvedev, day two, 10, or 20 to come on over with their scientists and engineers to explore blasting the well shut? He's such a statesman and leader, surely asking an ally for a little help/consultation would be okay.

He's a criminal and a fraud. Impreach Obama!!!

Have you noticed that Obama's public relations staff has started inserting words like, "enraged," "angry," "furious," etc. so the public will think he cares about the spill. His problem is he had NO EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE IN HIS LIFE AND IT SHOWS MORE AND MORE EVERY DAY. It isn't anger we want, it's leadership. Like telling his socialist EPA "czar" Browner that she immediately approve Louisiana's request for the feds to build small "islands" or berms in front of the bayou marshes. Oil on a beach is messy but can be cleaned. Oil kills marshes, period. The only response is to actually burn the marshes, which will also kill them for decades. But socialist Browner waited 11 days, then approved six berms but said that the feds would pay for only one and Louisiana had to pay for six. That was changed later, but do you see what the problem is with Obama? No executive experience. No leadership. It's shameful. Time to send him back to community organizing in the South Side of Chicago.

If we'd wanted a President that screams, yells, gets red in the face, and shuts down his campaign(I mean Government)...then we would have elected the old womanizer McCain and his half-wit VP!!

The reason that Obama is furious is because George Bush shirked his duty when the MMS was caught partying with the oil companies, using illegal drugs, and going on expensive vacations. That was when all of the contracts and inspections should have been reviewed! They were not, it was business as usual! With the Republicans it is just business! The Republicans do not care if the environment is harmed, just look at their record, environment 0, business 100+. But what can you expect when the Republicans are the mouthpieces of big business. The Republican Party have no original thoughts, they are all from big brother, i.e. big business!

I realize BP was and is responsible. But, a real Leader would take the initiative and prevent the oil from reaching shore. To this day I have not seen any tankers vacuuming up oil with water and offloading at a refinery for a very easy separation. The Gov of Louisiana early on sought sand barriers to no avail.

Posted by: robtemery | June 4, 2010 11:55 AM | Report abuse

"Furious",,you have got to be kidding. This boob is not "furious" because BP broke the well pipe. He's furious because he is beginning to look inept, helpless and out of control. This "furious" business is all about Obama and how he looks to the American people. He could pitch a tent on the beach and live there but that is not what is needed. Leadership, decisiveness, experience, common sense and courage are what is needed and that is non-existent in this WH.

Obama's refusal to admit that illegal immigration is a crime just fuels the divisions he has created since he became president.

Why does anyone need to obey the law if those who come here illegally not only broke the law to get here, but continue to do so by stealing ss numbers, etc.

If citizens break laws they are routinely penalized. A president who does not stand by the rule of law is not setting the example America needs.

Very sad that boycotts and slander are generated by radical groups and biased councils / boards (Los Angeles) without any apologies for their disrespect of the law they are OBLIGATED to follow.

One more time Obama has to be on T.V.>, he continues to lie, and continues to act as our President when in truth he is in this country as an illegal. He came as Barry, he was educated as Barry ( although no one remembers him nor is he in the college albums) and then all of a sudden he is Obama, with monies? Muslim Brothers backing one of thier own to manipulate and devide this country. Why has he not been impeached ?
His wife stated her husbands HOME COUNTRY was Kenya, the Kenya President and Obamas Grand Mother states a shrine is at his Birthplace in KENYA. The birth certificate he used DID NOT HAVE THE GOVERNMENT SEAL AND WAS A FRAUD. What does it take t o wake up Americans, how far will he drag us down before we STAND UP AS AMERICANS and Claim our Country Back ?
VOTE OUT EVERY PERSON WHO HAS SUPPORTED OBAMA COME NOVEMBER We need strong leadership, what we have now is a puppet of the Middle East who has devided this country, set back and intergrity we had and made us a laughing stock, but worse he used the race card, now he will not support ridding America of illegals, EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD requires Passports, Birth Certificates, and if not provided there is no entry, illegal entry results in jail, deportation or worse. The Illegals have NO RIGHTS IN AMERICA, and the Legal Mexican Community resent them as much as the Anglo or any race whoo came here the legal way. They are not immigrents
they are ILLEGALS, and for any crime in this Country there is punishment.
One more thing, wht are these Americans who are linking themselves to Terrorist, not being charge as Traitors, even such as the one responsible for the Fort Hood shoortings ? Obama does not want to rule against one of his Muslim Brothers ? WHY, arewe allowing this ?

I find I admire the president and at the same time disappointed in his leadership and problem solving. With all the political capital he enjoyed when taking office and his tremendous communication skills he appears to be unable to truly impact situations at home and specifically around the world.

If there is ever to be a middle east peace this is the time. He must get into the fray by personally attending and seeing negotiations through. The gulf is just one more example of how unsure he is. He is great at attending functions that are praising him or he wants to impress that audience with his policies. You cannot always lead by consensus.

Hard decisions are required and soon if we the people are ever going to see the world coming together to resolve mutual interests. Too many people suffering not only in depressed countries but the U.S as well.

The elected leaders need to start leading and stop quasi leading only if it helps them get reelected. This is a sick system where everything done is about fund raising for that top prize of reelection.

Obama is in over his head as President and does the only thing he is capable of - appear on Larry King. Now he is making another wasted trip to the Gulf because he forgot to take photos with the fishermen. He is to self centered to realize that if he suceeds in bankrupting BP, the taxpayers will have to pay the bill. Watch for more fancy shirts for those working on the beaches while he is there. Our only hope at this point is that BP does get something right. Obama is only good at campaigning and entertaining.

I notice that President Obama did not criticize sanctuary cities. By definition they are making immigration law. I guess what he meant to say is that he did not want states passing laws that he disagreed with, but by failing to mention sanctuary cities I guess he was saying that it was all right to pass laws that he agreed with.

LETFREEDOMRING2 tells us "During Bush’s presidency, federal funding for public libraries grew from $163.2 million per year to $212.2 million per year – a 30 percent increase."

Wow, that works out to 3.3%/year, unless you take inflation into account, in which case Bush raise real library funding by a whopping 0.54%/year. He must really respect Laura a lot to go out on a limb like that for her....

Yeah, it was a cheap-shot, but I still think Sir McCartney hit the bull's eye!

Posted by: rwolf01 | June 4, 2010 12:17 AM | Report abuse

Flash. Harvard Law School sometimes turns out people with very bad judgment, whose ideas are anathema to American values. Obama is one of them. And this: Paul McCartney's cheap shot at President Bush

We all know the first rule of polite society: If you can’t think of something nice to say about someone, don’t say anything at all. In certain bien pensant circles, however, there is a corollary: If you can’t think of anything nice to say -- say something bad about George W. Bush.

Consider Paul McCartney. Last night, the ex-Beatle accepted the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at a White House ceremony, with President Obama and the first lady in attendance. Upon concluding his performance, McCartney aimed a bolt of sarcasm at Obama’s predecessor. “After the last eight years,” he quipped, “it’s great to have a president who knows what a library is.” The audience erupted in laughter.

Sorry, I don't get the joke. There are many things of which Bush may be fairly accused. It would be boring to list them all. My point here, however, is that those who smugly deride his ostensible ignorance often inadvertently demonstrate their own.

And so it was with McCartney's obnoxious crack, which was not only nasty, and totally inappropriate to the occasion, but also perfectly uninformed. Bush’s wife Laura is a librarian. She and her husband made a mini-cause of supporting literacy and public libraries, both when he was governor of Texas and when he was president.

The Bush administration oversaw creation of a federal grant program to train a new generation of librarians. It’s called the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, and it has awarded $130 million to date. During Bush’s presidency, federal funding for public libraries grew from $163.2 million per year to $212.2 million per year – a 30 percent increase.

In mocking the boorishness of a former U.S. president, Sir Paul, and those who roared at his remark, unfortunately demonstrated their own.

You seem to have a President who talks to the nation like they are adults. Adults who can understand that there was a cause (A defanged and corrupted MMS) and a company at fault (BP, and their contractors). He seems to think adults can understand that there are limitations to what the Federal government can do about stopping the leak. Probably the only solution is to drill a relief well. And only BP can do that, not the Coast Guard.Adults understand that.

Its too bad not everyone is an adult however... So you get shallow and empty comments about how the situation is being handled. Other than theatrics....what would you change?
I know, give him a time machine to go back in time and make the MMS enforce the same deep sea regulations that Norway has, and that BP willingly follows in the North Sea. That ship sailed 5 years ago people.... He can't go back in time. You are victims of the limited government crowd who think that governemnt, like the MMS, just gets in the way of things. In Norway they thank the government every day for their drilling regulations.

wrong - he has declared it a National Emergency. ANd Natural Disaster for all states affected.

He issued BP a 69 million dollar invoice just yesterday.

And as far as not doing anything from Day One, he coordinated and deployed the Coast Guard and National Guard. He coordinated Regional Response Teams and Area Regional Response teams to report to Thad Allen, NIT Commander. 4 regions are affected by this. It is hard to coordinate 2 regions to get on the same page. How do you think coordination of 4 Region Teams goes.

BP is one that is messing up. Not our President.

And you all know it. You all know this fact that this lays at the feet of BP.

President is doing great
Thad Allen is doing a great job.

But, really, he's done all he reasonably could. All the hemming and hawing about Federal-state cleanup operations are going to happen no matter who is in charge. But as long as the leak keeps spewing oil, what happens on shore is secondary. And there is literally nothing else that Obama can do - or could have done since April 20 - to fix the hole.

As for fury, maybe people want that old Bill Clinton "I feel your pain" empathy. I don't. I want somebody who is going to hold BP accountable and who will make sure this never happens again. So far, Obama is doing just that.

He hasn't even declared it a National Emergency. He is either totally incompetent or doesn't care-which is it?

The community organizer once again showing he has absolutely no clue what being POTUS actually means.

Obama has done all he humanly can from the beginning. Monday morning quarterbacking we can say he should have had more booms prepared (before the April 20 explosion). Or he should have flushed out the MMS before the Deepwater Horizon rig was OK'd. But, really, he's done all he reasonably could. All the hemming and hawing about Federal-state cleanup operations are going to happen no matter who is in charge. But as long as the leak keeps spewing oil, what happens on shore is secondary. Why wasn't he furious 6 weeks ago? This "furious" thing is as phony as his presidency.

Two months late. What a mess.

I like the way President Obama actually answers the questions poised to him.

So many politicians don't answer the questions.

Like Bush...he would dance around the question with idealology talk. Or not know how to pronounce Azerbajani

I support Obama but the more he's seen as a "furious" president who either doesn't get his feet wet trying to stop this thing or fails to assemble the right mix of experts in the field for a summit on how to end it, his furiousness won't impress me much.
