Liz Cheney: Turkey is siding with our enemies

Liz Cheney, a former deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bush Administration, who has made a name for herself with her outspoken and often controversial soundbites, said Sunday that Turkey has joined Iran and Syria in an effort to destroy Israel.

Speaking on ABC's "This Week" about the recent killings by Israeli soldiers on a flotilla headed for Gaza, Cheney said Turkey has chosen sides. And it hasn't chosen the United States.

"(Israel's enemies) want to destroy the state of Israel, and they are supported in that by the countries Iran, Syria and, now, it looks like Turkey as well," she said.

"The prime minister of Turkey has stood up and said Hamas is not a terrorist organization. The Turks themselves have allied themselves with Iran and Syria."

A growing voice on foreign policy for the right wing of the GOP, Cheney certainly hasn't been afraid to mix it up.

Earlier this year, an ad run by Cheney's nonprofit, Keep America Safe, went after Justice Department lawyers who had defended terrorism detainees at Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.

"DOJ: Department of Jihad?" read a headline in the ad, which referred the unnamed lawyers as the "Al-Qaeda 7."

Cheney's comments Sunday echoed her recent thoughts on the Obama administration's response to the killings, which she has suggested is actually more tragic than the killings themselves.

The administration has yet to take a firm stance on whether the killings -- which include a U.S. citizen -- were justified, and most political leaders prefer a wait-and-see approach on the situation, the details of which are still pretty murky.

"President Obama is contributing to the isolation of Israel, and sending a clear signal to the Turkish-Syrian-Iranian axis that their methods for ostracizing Israel will succeed, and will be met by no resistance from America," Cheney said in a statement this weekend.

Quick question for AloneInTheWorldOfTheSane
What does your vacation plans have to with this discussion here? You are not making any sense I am sorry.
As Turkey is shifting from a pliable ally to thorn for the US,I think, the US should cancel Turkey's NATO membership.
Turkey and the other arab nations should start their own NATO organization.
Why would Turkey support backstabber Arabs against Israel? ARabs are no friend to Turkey anyway and they are known to be backstabber. After getting provoked by Brits, the Arabs attacked Ottoman Turks during WW1. Turkey has been providing aid and all kinds of assistance to Palestine but in return, they're getting nothing. The Palestinian Arabs did it again and they have not recognized the Turkish Cypriots and they have built relations with the Greek Cypriots only.

I am offering Mrs Chaney all my libn. If Turkeys and other such animals, by my mother's life, were to get their own way then were would my sons Little Ezra and Benjamin go for their all expenses paid summer vacations. It is hard enough for us to be living all the way out on Long Island, and to endure the LIRR to get into the City by, my God, there is no way we are giving up what is ours by right. Our sun drenched retirement home in Haifa, our sons and their sons retirement homes, in whatever town they wish (as long as we give advance notice the army will tear down the Arab homes there at the moment). It is shocking to think that even though no one from my family actually came from Israel, that there is a change the "local color" is going to destroy it. Why is everyone giving $11Bn in tax dollars a year, and selling them arms if we are not to use them? As my cousin Avi says, "it's our land - ask Spielberg."

Lebanon war 2006, 1600+ civilians killed by Israeli Air Force (American Fighter Jets) 0 Israeli Civilians killed.
16 Israeli Armed forces personnel killed. Lebanese still being killed and mimed from thousands of cluster bombs that litter south Lebanon's farms.... yes, cause apples and trees are a threat to Israel. What was the outcome of this war, NOTHING.... Did no damage to Hezbollah, rather made them stronger. killed thousands of civilians, destroyed 70% of infrastructure in a country still trying to recover from 15yrs of civil war funded by Israel and America.

Americans ask the Question, why do the Muslim world hate America? It is because Americans sell and donate to Israel cutting edge technology, fighter jets, tanks, weapons, missiles etc and are allowed to let loose on a group of guys with ancient Russian AK47 machine guns and home made rockets that don't even pierce through concrete or do any damage.
What is the world going to do about the millions of refugees?

Hang on-- Turkey is siding with our ENEMIES? Why do we consider all of the Arab world our enemy, or better yet, why do we consider Israel our friend and ally? What does Israel do for US? It seems they ask for a heck of a lot while giving back nothing but trouble and heartache, not to forget what their zionist government has had to say about our "own" elected officials (look it up).
Gaza, and particularly, Hamas, does not hate US. Their fight (struggle, jihad) is not with us or with anyone other than Israel, and they DO have the right to protect themselves. WHO has Hamas attacked, ever? In the past (nearly) three years, who has Hamas killed? The answer is fewer than one-dozen Israelis, mainly IDF soldiers, yet Israel has killed coming up on two-thousand people, mainly civilians, and including Palestinians AND Americans, and Turkish civilians. So, how is being on the side of Israel beneficial to US or to Turkey?
I've had my big ole bowl of HASBARA this morning, and don't need yet another cup of it from you!
Free Palestine. Long Live GAZA!
America; WAKE UP!

Turkey is becoming more radicalized and pro-Muslim. They used to be more moderate toward Israel, but no more. Now they are dangerous.
Could never understand Anti-Semistism. 14 Million Jews in the world, and Billions of Muslims.
Look at all that the Jews have contributed to humanity, going back 6 thousand years. Starting with monothesism and giving birth to Christ. Art, music, science, literature, film, lae, democracy, philantropism, human rights, and equality for women, medicine, multiple Nobel Prizes. Why doesn't any of that count, besides they have done it all while being persecuted and suffering genocide.
You also don't hear Jews whining, they just work and accomplish great things. No hand outs.
What have the Muslims done for you lately? They are still living in biblical times, and seem intent on not only destroying Judiasm , but also the entire Infidel Western civilization.
Israel is us, and if they go, so do we.

I'm astounded and ill at the hatred, ill-judgement, anti-semitism and disrespect for women that I have come across in many of the comments. I choose a few as examples:

"Bit*h", "honeybee", "an idiot", "spawn of a war criminal", "a shrill overwrought woman". Etc., Etc.

All so very un-American, shrill and overwrought, to use one of the above comments. What words would you use for a like article from a man?

Those of you who post such comments, and worse, would need to study your great Constitution. You are FREE. Why can't you use this freedom to promote the Good?

In another country, you would be either in jail, or up in Court, for using such statements.

Ms. Cheney is an American and has the right to voice her beliefs, whether you agree, or not. Becoming abusive, instead of using reasoned argument, is not the way to go.

I'm not an American, so these are my objective statements. I don't have any axe to grind in these matters. I'm just horrified to find such attacks on a fellow human being.

I'm an Irish woman, and have been unable to read all the comments on Liz Cheney's Article, as I'm physically sick because of the hatred, ill-judgement, and anti-semitism I have come across in many of these comments. Americans, this is not the way to protest, as you well-know from your Constitutions. Becoming personal is a no-no and, certainly, never promotes Peace, or solutions, as we in Ireland well know. It is diabolical.

I admire what your Constitutions stand for but, Mr/Mrs/Ms/barnaby twist, bekabo, jryan758, daveque, I object to your hatred of women, which is portrayed in the words "bit*h", "honeybee", "an idiot", and "spawn of a war criminal", which you, in turn, called Ms. Cheney. Whether you agree with an article, or not, you have no right to become personal. In my country, you would be up in Court very fast for such statements. You're in a country, where you feel you can use such horrible words with impunity.

I'm sure that, had I read to the end of all the comments, I probably would have come across like comments, or, maybe, worse.

We must vote for Dems and support President Obama.

I am stunned by the liberal views expressed supporting terrorists and countries that have the destruction of one of the best allies the US has. Our Pres has been to many countries surrounding Israel apologizing for America while never presenting any of the positives we have done for all countries. This has never been done in our history. The greatest country in the world and he apologizes!!!

Israel has every right to protect its citizens from enemies that surround them. They tried to work with Turkey to prevent this from happening, but, Turkey has been the accomplice to this tragedy.

Everyone needs to wake up to the dangerous world we live in. People hiding behind a religion to murder, rape and plunder their own people, much less, anyone that has other religious views or worships. You go ahead and support this activity against civilized nations even though the end game is to destroy America.

Hamas IS a terrorist organization responsible for sending thousands of rockets and bombers into homes, schools and stores. Israel is about the size of RI, and must be on alert all the time.

In all your ranting, you fail to mention the peaceful inspections of 5 other ships in the "flotilla", but, when they attempted the same in this ship, IHH and FreeGaza, both with terrorist affiliations, attacked the soldiers with pipes and other weapons. You also ignore that the soldiers arrived with paintball non-lethal ammo. Only after being beat half to death did they defend themselves with side arms.

It seems you people are too young to remember the Cuban Missile Crisis and the blockade America imposed, but, I wouldn't expect your teachers or professors to teach you the truth about the freedoms we seem to take for granted. If you think you have all the answers, go live anywhere overseas and it won't take you very long to miss the good ole' USA. Stop trying to recreate history. If we don’t stand for something, we will fall for anything.

Why does anyone care what Cheney thinks? She has no credentials upon which she can make informed decisions. Her comment on any topic (foreign affairs, the economy, health care, etc.) is "Obama is a socialist and bad for America." The question is why any legitimate news program would have her on as a guest.

I never thought I would ever agree with Liz Cheney about anything. On this I agree. Turkey, not anyone's surprise, has moved in the wrong direction.

Having said that the current Israeli government has tried every Jew's patience, particularly those of us who consider ourselves liberals. This particular crew3 of lunatics in the Israeli government has cost the people of Israel a considerable amount of anguish.

It is not that they should not protect Israel. Their problem is one of perception. Benjamin Netanyahu, Avigdor Liberman, and the others now in power are as irrationally determined never to compromise on anything as the fundamentalist muslims are.

One can not deal rationally with either side.

The people of Israel have to get rid of these reactionaries and put in place people who can beat the muslim whackjobs while making a good case for doing so to the rest of the world.

The only message coming out of Israel today seems to be insufficient to convince the world of Israel's peaceful intent. In addition, every time Liberman opens his big mouth the supporters of Israel's destruction (and make no mistake: every person on that flotilla hates Jews, hates Israel, and supports radical Islam) they get a public relations coup.

Ms Cheney, needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Israel by its actions is becoming increasingly isolated. Unless the United States developes a Middle East foreign policy that is in its own interests, and not dictated by Israel and the Zionist lobby in the US, it will also become isolated. Ms Cheney must keep in mind that Turkey is an important Nato alli. What is she advocating, the expulsion of Turkey from Nato?

Of course Turkey is siding with our enemies. What did you expect? Ever since Erdogan and his Islamic chauvinists got into power, he has been moving Turkey away from Ataturk's secularism and toward Islamization -- both internally as well as in foreign policy. This is a very serious development which is grossly underestimated by our government. Turkey is now in the camp of Iran and Syria.

PS: ATTN: NEWS MEDIA

Do you think inviting Liz Cheney to comment on anything going on with the present administration will really solicit objective commentary or might there be a conflict of interest asking the daughter of a former vice president that was involved so deeply in our current energy policy, torture, etc.? Do you think Americans deserve to be presented with objective news and commentary?

Posted by: ruthella10 | June 7, 2010 8:20 AM | Report abuse

I dont understand for the life of me why our so called "media" keeps parading these know nothings on sunday talk shows as being experts. Other than being the daughter of a former vice president and having served in a low level state department job, what on earth qualifies Liz Cheney as a viable source of real and actual contributor to the national dialogue. Our friggin media should be ashamed, and if they were not so damn lazy and actually reported on things Americans needed to know they would do a better job. Everytime they put that talking piece of sewage on television it makes me sick. William Kristol is another idiot that gets touted as being some type of foreign affairs expert, when every prediction the man has made publicly has been documented as being wrong. Dammit...when are we going to get some real dialogue on real issues through our news media?

In order to maintain jews inside its country, they are capable of forcing the west in an atomic holocaust.this the 21 century not the biblical times, they have to give the authonmy to the palestinian as was agreed in 1948 Un resolution , or sooner or latter there will be war. every day Israel losses an ally for its fanatic actitude, they are now more lonely than ever.

Israel exists because Europeans wanted Jewish refugees out of Europe. Hitler used what he considered to be important insights into the root causes of Germany's loss of World War I and economic depression to justify mass killing of those who he considered to be undesirable people, to include Jews, people with congenital disabilities, homosexuals, intellectuals, and political enemies. Jews needed a welcoming place to lead their lives. Israel, a historical, nay Biblical place in the 1920s was becoming a Jewish homeland. The United Nations recognized a sliver of Arabian desert as a Jewish homeland. Well, the Arabs had a fit. They are still having fits. Heck, it is nothing for them to lob rockets into Israel to protest the "taking" of their lands to host what they perceive to be an infidel tribe of religious zealots. So, Israel tries to defend itself. This is perceived to be an unwarranted attack on Palestine, which has many fine Palestinians in it, and some not so fine, originating in refugees that developed when the Arabs objected to the UN's decision to recognize Israel. Israel also stirs the pot with settlements in disputed territories. Palestinians decamped to wait out the destruction of Israel. Didn't happen. The Muslims and the Jews never have seen eye-to-eye. It appears they never will. The solution isn't to vaporize Israel. Neither is it the destruction of Palestinians. Let us reason together. Wait! Is that a gun?

Liz Cheney on Choices
What Were Their Choices
And How Did They Choose?

Whatever arguments may be made (and Liz will make many), the simple fact remains that two basic choices were made:

1. No Israeli Dead. When Israeli forces were in the power of what the IDF described as a vicious terrorist lynch mob, NOT ONE Israeli soldier was killed, although it is acknowledged they certainly could have been easily killed. This was the choice of the peace activists.

2. 9 Turkish Dead. When the passengers were in the power of Israeli ‘officers’, they murdered 9 unarmed Turkish citizens, mostly by shooting them in the face with 9mm DU parabellum slugs at close range. This was the choice of Israeli Army Officers.

In the end, none of the so-called weapons were produced by Israel; not even the dangerous deck-chairs that the dying passengers raised in self defense. Israel produced NO weapon stashes secreted for Hamas aboard any of the ships. Israel couldn’t even produce a convenient lie – like Dick Cheney's MWDs – absolutely NO weapons for Hamas, nothing, nada, zero! Liz knows this, she just wants to do what her Dad did!

What facts remain? An illegal blockade of Gaza that United Nations Security Council resolution 1860 directed Israel to lift? Isn’t Israel compelled to follow Security Council directives, or does Israel get to thumb its nose at the UN just like Iran? If not, why then is the death of 9 Turks during the enforcement of an unlawful blockade not murder? Liz will ignore this. Compliance with UN Security Counsel Resolutions simply don't apply to the friends of Liz and Dick Cheney.

And the rest of the Turkish passengers? They were kidnapped at gun point by the IDF to Israel, then charged with entering the country illegally, stripped of their identification and personal possessions, threatened, intimidated, abused and then deported.

Why? To humiliate Turkey and to send the Turkish people a message not to give aid or support to Gaza. The message didn’t need to be translated from Hebrew; it was delivered with the blood of dead Turks and was understood by everyone. Liz is OK with this, oh yes, otherwise what would would her Dad look like? Dead Turks?, OK! Dead Israelis? not OK. Nothing is very complicated in Liz Cheney's hate-filled world. 9mm parabellum solutions work just fine for Liz.

Two choices – two very different results. What else?, Liz, do tell!

Being religious used to mean that the person so designated had high principles and was to be admired. That's changed, I suppose. Israel's worst enemy is itself! The destruction of the state is coming from within. One must carefully distinguish between Zionists, Israelis, and Jews.

The Freedom Flotilla's mission was to deliver 10,000 tons of cement, prefabricated homes and building materials, a dental clinic, food, water, and 500 wheelchairs for handicapped children in Gaza, a small, bombed-out strip of land with 1.5 million Arabs.

The clash of ideas came about because some of us, unlike the Cheneys, believe with Greta Berlin and Mairead Corrigan-Maguire that Gazans, regardless of the majority voting a few years ago for Hamas, deserve to have their human needs met.

It is a vicious lie to say, "By attempting to run a military blockade with ships loaded with military supplies they earned the response they got." The ships were not loaded with military supplies or soldiers. Fearful insanity it is to believe without any evidence that the ships were loaded with weapons and supplies for Hamas.

Trees planted along the Avenue of the Righteous, names engraved on the walls of the Garden of the Righteous all droop today. The noblest principles of humanity have fled Israel. There is no righteousness left.

If Liz Cheney for a MOMENT thinks that Obama is supporting Turkey's moves, she is deluded and extremely stupid!

The fact of the matter remains that the Obama Administration is complicit in the attack on the Gaza Flotilla in the fact that it will not and continues to refuse to stand up to Israel and demand that it be held accountable for its blatant disregard for the law!

It is disgusting that everyone from the UN to the White House are "allowing" Israel time to make up its mind what to do. Yes Liz, that is really the Obama Administration siding with Turkey you moron!

We are headed for an all out war in the middle east because Netanyahu and his colleagues feel they are above reproach. Now they are no better then Iran in accelerating the war to end all wars!

Liz Cheney is just trying to look good for the Jewish lobby so that she can have a political future! Isn't that just like American democracy? No matter what, stand by the Pirates and State terrorists. Is that why we elect politicians in this country anyway- so they can sell America to the interests of the Jewish lobby? Are they serving the interests of the American tax payers or the lobbyists for Israel? I believe that we as Americans will be lost if we don't stand up for the core values that we used to defend so proudly. We cannot support pirates and state terrorists anymore!! This lobby is nonsense and will tarnish the American dream and who we are unless we stand up for truth and right rather than injustice. It seems that from President Bush onward we are increasingly tilting toward representing injustice.
What happened to Saudi Arabia after 9/11? Nothing! But have we really done anything to stop terrorism or have we just secured our energy supply and oil piplines ? With this track record our democracy cannot continue to be an example for the rest of the world to follow.
Where are our retired military leaders who so honorably served our country without regard to financial interest? They need to rise up for truth and American interests prior to sinking this ship.
Turkey, our NATO ally, has served our interests for 50 years against Communism and now we turn our back on them in favor of a bunch of pirates who we deem more valuable to us because they have the power to buy our senators.
These pirates know how to behave in international waters and they need to be tried in keeping with Maritime law so that American interests are not further damaged in the world as well in the region.
Liz Cheney can't be all that different from her dad and I am sure that he was more than enough.

Liz Cheney was (thanks only to her father), Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and then, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State For Near Eastern Affairs.

And people wonder why America is so hated in the Middle East.

Small wonder, also, that the career employees at Foggy Bottom greeted Hillary Clinton with cheers of welcome when she entered the building.

I hate to even partially agree with this Liz Cheney on anything, but the secular Turkey that was once a valuable ally is no more. Among other things, Christain clergy are being killed and now they are openly siding with hammas. Since the Israel seizure of the flotilla could have been carried out in a more efficient manner, Obama is probably right on being quite on this for the time being and Turkey is still a NATO ally. Cheney talks as if W was tough on palestinian mayhem. He wasn't. Appearing on TV after a palestinian terrorist attack that killed an American along with some Jews, he whined about the poor palestinians. I don't think he knew which side was which.

You can see the level of intelligence the arabs commenters have in that not one of them has refuted her major points but have sunken to the level of racist lies. Erdogan has taken turkey from a US ally to being part of the Iran/syria/Iran axis. He has his own personal agenda to satisy his ambition to be the leader of the Islamic world in their fight with the West. Turkey is no friend of the US. I think that Turkey's membership in NATO should be carefully reviewed. Also, I would suggest that countries such as Germany and France with high Turkish immigrant populations carefully review their policies. They may regret having large Islamic minorities such as the Turks in their midst.

The United States must take effective and clear action to eliminate the threat of terrorism posed daily by the actions and attitude of the government of Israel. The world has at last recognized that Israel's treatment of its neighbors in Palestine and Gaza represents the total absence of morality and and the most extreme cruelty now practiced by any allegedly civilized and democratic nation against those it chooses to dislike. The Israeli government and the Israeli citizens who support that government practice the most extreme and cruel apartheid found in the modern world. This policy is by far the most important factor causing the ever rising tide of terrorist activities by disaffected religious groups in almost every country in the world. Israel now flaunts this policy in the face of worldwide disapproval by even its most friendly supporters. A nation and a government so arrogant and morally blind cannot be sustained among the family of nations to which it seeks to numbered. This situation grows ever more dire as Israeli actions promote ever more frequent and widespread terrorism by victims of the evil, bigoted and racist Israeli policies

Liz Chaney, ABC and all Sunday TV shows are best example of how Israeli Agents control the US Media and how Republicans are complete "Lap Dogs" of Israel.

FACTS:
Israel blockade of Gaza = Crimes against Humanity

Israel killing of beautiful young and innocent Rachel Corrie that was in Palestine to selflessly help refugees = Murder of the most heinous degree

Israel bombing of US Liberty and killing 200+ Americans = Mass Murder of unimaginable degree

Israeli killing of the peace activist on the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara = Another day another mass killing of innocent people by the Israeli Arny, even peace activist trying to deliver food and medicine

US Government siding with Israel NO matter what crimes it commits, even when it is against American people ala Rachel Corrie, USS Liberty, etc. and US Media flaming hatred and fear toward a nothing of nothing pathetic Alqaeda that does not have 1 ship, 1 Tank, 1 plane, etc. best proof of how Israeli agents control the US Government via their control of US Media and Wall Street (i.e,, Goldman Sachs) and as the result how American people are really slaves to Israel.

Posted by: maus92 | June 6, 2010 4:01 PM | Report abuse

Liz Cheney may be wrong on a lot of things, but she's on the correct track here. Turkey is becoming an Islamic Republic, moving away from being a secular democracy.

Even significant leaders in Turkey agree. The currently elected party was nearly forced to disband (effectively, an impeachment of the entire party!!) in 2008 for violating Turkey's secular charter. The Constitutional Court voted in the majority to disband the AKP party, but it was 1 vote (out of 11) short of the needed super-majority.

Its not just the obvious recent case with Israel/Jews either. The Christian Orthodox church, for example, which has been in what is now Turkey long BEFORE Mohammed was born, is forced to operate under very troubling restrictions (enough so that 60 Minutes did a piece on this).

Politically, Turkey has essentially attempted to undercut sanctions on Iran regarding their nukes.

People may differ on how good or bad this is, but there is no question that Turkey is not the same country is was a decade ago.

Liz Cheney is right.

Obama has done American interests in the middle east no favors by his snubbing of Israel's PM in front of the world, who was watching and grinning like the greedy dogs that they are. Liz Cheney reaffirms my faith that human race will, in the end, destroy itself.

Pre-medieval superstition should not factor into foreign policy in a nuclear age, and accelerating the wealth disparity and dismantling Constitutionally-guaranteed civil liberties foretells a fascistic future in the hands of these miscreants.

We belittle these types at our own peril. They are in change. Don't ever forget that. As dumb as this woman sounds, she speaks as things truly are, or have recently been.

You cannot belittle that. The ideology that Liz Cheney represents is the prevailing sense of all three branches of our government, despite what looked like clear supermajorities for moderate ideology in all but the Supreme Court, now tilted to putting corporate interests above those of the public for a generation or more.

They are responsible for this oil disaster. They are responsible for the Iraqi disaster. They are responsible for the financial disaster. They are responsible for the health care disaster.

And now with the passing of time, they try to absolve themselves of responsibility for their historical actions, in some cases, attempting to rewrite the very pages of history.

Nothing stands in these people's way, don't you get it? They are the fanatic's fanatic -- obsessed -- driven. They run the media -- they have their own special propaganda outlets in every media type and market. They pay no respect to facts, and as a matter of course manipulate half-truths into inflammatory falsehoods laced with focus-grouped sound bytes and epithets. They have no moral compass, instead, they convince themselves that God ordained them to lead so any means are justified to their ends.

The philosophy of Cheney will bury us. They are winning. Don't forget it.

Hey Lizzie, or any reader here... please explain to me as an American why I should care any more about Israel than I care about Monaco or Syria or Nigeria. For the record, I don't. In fact, a majority of the Israelis I've met have been inconsiderate to the point of brutishness and jaw-dropping racists, people I wouldn't sit down at dinner with even were I starving.

I understand that a majority of Israelis favor rapprochement with the Palestinians, that the peace movement is large in Israel, but it's the settler moment calling the shots, and they are crazy, and armed to the teeth. Israel cannot absorb a half million potential assassins armed to the teeth, they have some really tough decisions ahead of them and are nowhere near making then. Avigdor Lieberman is a settler and Netanyahu is fully supportive of them.

And oh, what Liz Cheney neglected to mention in her latest bid for attention is that a week ago Turkey was one of Israel's strongest allies, that their new postiion is a direct result of Israel's naked act of piracy, regarded in Turkey as 9/11/01 was regarded in America, Israel has made its own bed.

The U.S. needs to act as a leader. If two kids are fighting at school, a leader does not take sides. They sit the two down and work it out. They are a leader, that's what a leader does. In this situation it's Israel and Turkey, so U.S., act like a leader. Before Obama became President, we automatically took the side of Israel no matter what, it's ridiculous. I do not hate Israel and I am certainly not an anti-Semite, but it's simply not fair to take Israel's side on everything. As far as folks saying Turkey is a terrorist country, etc. etc. Isreal killed 12 people for bringing humnatarian aid to Turkey- things like medicine and wheelchairs. Their punishment does not fit the crime. You don't kill people who are bringing aid to another country, that's WRONG.

Liz Cheney- Liz Cheney found herself a lesbian in a Conservative family and realized she in huge trouble. Since then, she's been acting out by blurting out whatever comes to her small mind.

If you want to talk about terrorists, her father Dick and George W. Bush are biggest terrorists ever. They created this economic mess, and they have ALWAYS sided with Big Oil- the same Big Oil causing the deaths of innocent animals drowning and choking in oil as Oil C.E.O's make BILLIONS. The housing crisis, the current recession, that was also caused by previous administrations, most notably the last one. Today, millions of hardworking MIDDLE CLASS AMERICANS suffer, they are unemployed and their houses are worth nothing, while Big Banks and Fly By Night mortgage brokers made millions off of us.
It's sick, and these people should be in jail. If the Bush Administration had actually had regulations in place, this would never have happened. Their biggest DRONE Alan Greenspan the Federal Reserve Chairman could have prevented it. He was on 60 minutes recently and his response was there was nothing that could be done about it. WRONG. He was the Federal Reserve Chairman, he could have done plenty but instead he sat there and watched it happen. Shame on him, and shame on anyone that voted for Bush. I did not, I have no blood on my hands from the War on Iraq (Oil Oil Oil) nor do I have blood on my hands from the current housing crisis. I sleep well at night.

Talk about terrorism, everything we are dealing with today, everything Obama is doing his best to solve, was inherited by failures of the previous administrations.
I've studied government for years, Obama is a GOD, he's a SAVIOR, he's working his butt off to save our country and he's the best thing that's happened to this country in a long long long long time. We, our children, generations to come, and THE WORLD are all going to be better off because of it. Good Night, and Good Luck.

GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[sigh] why on earth is anyone quoting Liz Cheney on anything other than familial issues.

Her credentials are close to non-existent. Being her daddy and uncle georgie's flunky are NOT credentials. She was given her administrative position based on who's daughter she was, not on her education, experience, knowledge or intelligence. She's at best a legacy necon who like all neocons has been proven to be wrong, wrong and, oh right, wrong.

She like the rest of the Bush Era Neocons have nothing worthwhile to contribute to the party or to the country.

So why on earth are her baseless opinions being put forth for debate?

Well, guess what, Babe? A bomb on one of those ships would have had to blow up in Gaza, the only place that Israel would have theoretically allowed the ship to dock, not in Israel, thus killing Palestinians, not Israelis. So it seems like something with which the pro-Cheney crowd would be pleased.

Seventy-eight percent of American Jews voted for Obama.

Presumably this is because they do not identify with the slavering, right-wing extremists (Netanyahoo, Avigdor Lieberman, Shas, United Torah Judaism) who hold the Knesset, Israel and the peace process hostage. Or with Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin idiots on offer in America.

It is no accident that since the emergence of the far-right religious and political extremists as the governing coalition in the Knesset, support for Israel in the world has diminished to the point of non-existence.

It also helps to explain why, "Israel In Danger of Losing America's Jewish Youth."

"Recently, in this space, I worried as a friend of Israel about the growing irrelevancy of the Zionist cause in the United States. Our kids don't see the dream of a Jewish homeland the way we and our parents do or did. The new generation's impressions of Israel are those of an imperialistic bully, grabbing Arab lands and building illegal settlements--not those of a plucky underdog.

"In an essay in the latest edition of the New York Review of Books, Peter Beinart, a CUNY professor, author and orthodox Jewish scholar, analyzes this phenomenon, with special emphasis on the new generations of Jewish Americans, who have grown up on images of Israeli tanks crushing Palestinian uprisings.

"Morally, American Zionism is in a downward spiral," Beinart writes. And so, "particularly in the younger generation, fewer and fewer American Jewish liberals are Zionists."

http://www.usnews.com/blogs/john-farrell/2010/05/25/Israel-In-Danger-of-Losing-Americas-Jewish-Youth.html

There is also this:

"American Jews’ connection to Israel drops off with each subsequent generation, a new study suggests."

"The authors of the study, sociologists Steven M. Cohen and Ari Kelman, found a consistent increase in alienation in each younger generation, with middle-aged Jews less attached to Israel than older Jews, and younger Jews less attached than middle-aged Jews.

“Every measure indicates a decline of attachment to Israel” from one generation to the next, Kelman, a sociologist at the University of California, Davis, told the Forward.

Liz Cheney serves a purpose. That purpose is to offer contrast between the rabid and insane seditionists out there and those of us who actually believe in the goodness of this country and the real precepts of the Founders. As to Israel, as a believer in the promise of Israel, I am disheartened every time they fail to listen to their better nature. The enemy is close all the time. Sometimes he is even of the same religion. The real problems start when that enemy opposes the chance at peace.

What have we learned today? Bush/Cheney + Netanyahu = no peace, no brains, no end to warlike activities and provocations.

But...one question: how many wheelchairs and beds does it take to make a rocket? I'm figuring maybe one of each. Really.

So, open the border, inspect everything and maybe...just maybe a few hearts and minds can be changed without anyone getting hurt.

The USA has been Israel's uncritical enabler for far too long. The recent act of piracy is just the latest in a long string of atrocities committed by a nation bathed in blood and self-righteousness, under the thumb of a psychotic and criminal settler movement that brazenly steals land and regularly engages in terror. It's long overdue for the USA to pull the plug on this nasty apartheid nation and turn our support to the Palestinians they round up and slaughter.

Until that settler movement is illegals and aggressively prosecuted under Israeli law, they shouldn't get one dime or one bullet from America.

Cut aid to Israel, but also to Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, etc. It is idiotic to borrow money from the Chinese to aid "friends" who do nothing but create risk and long-term costs. We should have completely re-architected these relationships after the Cold War.

Posted by: chucka1 | June 6, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

First Point-who cares what Liz Cheney says. Her father served two terms as Vice President and never bothered to talk to the American People and the press. He hid behind President Bush and held the public, the congress, and the press in utter contempt.

Second - Liz Cheney had a job in the Bush Cheney State Department because her Dad was Vice President. It was not a merit hire. Her Dad was Vice President- get it.

Third - The Bush Cheney Foreign Policy was a disaster. We started a war in Iraq because there were weapons of mass destruction. We wanted to prevent Saddam from assembling nuclear weapons. We also started another war in Afganistan that we have no chance of winning and no obvious U.S. interest. There is a U.S. interest in Afghanistan and Irag but it was never defined by President Bush, Vice President Cheney or his daughter Liz. I cannot think of a single thing she did at the State Department that would be considered a success.

Fourth- Liz Cheney lives off the taxpayers. She has never had a job that requires her foreign policy expertise. She and her mother have spent a career working in foundations where they can have staff take care of their every need, get paid big salaries and write their talking points. If the contributions were not tax deductible Liz and her mother would not be "working."

Fifth--Liz Cheney was never taught manners. She constantly interupts the other people on the show and talks over everything they say. If she could not say that it not true and interupt people she would not have anything to say.

Sixth -- Liz Cheney has a simple test- If a democrat says it it is wrong. If Barack Obama is for something she is against it. If Nancy Pelosi is for something she is against it. If Bush Cheney et al did somehting it is good. The world is simply not that simple.

Seventh -- Liz Cheney is trying to promote herself as a public speaker. ABC and Fox and pimping her to be a public speaker and get paid $50 k per speech. It is a new industry that is quite lucrative called Pink elephants. Somehow this is good so the taxspayers subsidize it with tax deductible contributions and no income tax on foundations earnings for Liz to run around and tell the story about how rebulicans are good and democrats are bad.

The real threat to our country's freedom and independent is the Zionist infiltration into our government.

We are implicated in the Zionists atrocities in Gaza and the "Goldstone" report by the UN was a turning point. Now we have a dozen civilian killed in the international waters again by the rogue Zionists state and we have not taken any concrete action to show to the international community that we are not involved.

Each indecent was dismissed by our us, because it is clear that our policies are being dictated by the Zionists and are made in TelAviv.

If we are all OK by this then we should not be complaining about the international community's cold shoulder towards us. We can go one and kill the Muslims, but I don't want any more innocent blood on my hand.

I dislike Liz Cheney, but I don't think her view point is far-fetched on this matter.

A few weeks ago Iran and Turkey reached an unprecedented deal to exchange nuclear materials.

Turkey's prime minister Erdogan has also said that Hamas is not a terrorist organization, and he's the first religious leader that Turkey (a traditional secular country) has had in close to a century.

Turkey has been one of our country's strongest allies, and they've been a strong ally for Israel in the past too, but times appear to be changing.

The US is getting out of Iraq and that will leave a power vacuum. In such a world, it's entirely conceivable that Turkey could turn its back on the US and Israel in favor of better relations with Iran and Syria (both of which it borders). If/when Iran gets a nuclear weapon, that will only make matters worse for our country, especially if Turkey is no longer the great ally it used to be.

Do I like Liz Cheney? No, she pisses me off. But I'll be even more pissed if she gets the satisfaction of gloating in the future that none of us listened to her for the one time that she may actually have had something prescient to say.

Egypt has opened their fence (on the Gaza strip) for supplies coming into Gaza.

Israel will stand by the blockade and the right to search ships because Hamas is still present. ANd Hamas does not recognize Israel.

It is undoubetly true now that Turkey doesn't recognize Israel.

What if, what if, those ships carried a suicide bomber. Just one is all it takes.

I believe the press isn't helping. Stating, well, it was supplies for houses, food, medical wheelchairs.

Humanitarian aid continues to be shipped by the Israelis into Gaza on a daily basis. In a typical week, the Israeli military coordinates the transfer of hundreds of trucks containing about 15,000 tons of supplies. In the first quarter of 2010, 94,500 tons of supplies were transferred by the Israeli military. Humanitarian aid organizations assist in the delivery of these goods, many of which have been intercepted by Hamas for their own purposes. In 2009, over 10,000 Gazans were treated in Israel by Israeli physicians and hospitals.

Liz Cheney's words carry the same weight as Rush Limbaugh's or Sarah Palins. She is not an elected official, she is not a government employee, she is not a candidate for any office, she makes her living as a talking head.

The real questions here are not whether there is any merit in what has said, it is why she was on ABC to begin with and why the WAPO bothered to cover it.

Why does Turkey, an friend of America's enemies, get $13 billion dollars in foreign aid?
No Muslim dominated country deserves one red cent from American taxpayers.

Posted by: sperrico | June 6, 2010 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Indeed, Turkey has taken their nod from the Obama administration and they are beginning to sound like Israel's enemy. Obama has done American interests in the middle east no favors by his snubbing of Israel's PM in front of the world, who was watching and grinning like the greedy dogs that they are. Should America ever be so stupid as to again elect a Muslim president to represent us, then we deserve everything we get.

From the comments posted, I see that the WP is now mosty read by anti-Semites. How long is it that we are going to kow-tow to the Arab Appeasers?

So any questioning as to Israeli policy and tactics is to be an anti-semite? Hmmm?
That is rather limited. Well, I guess the US will grow comforatble in its status as a satellite state eventually, just give us some time.

ssmorehouse, by definition an "Arab appeaser" cannot be an anti-semite. The vast majority of semites are Arabs. Further, Turks are not Arabs. Please acquire a 6th grade education level before posting comments. Thanks.

The logic is that you are either for Israel on everything, and if you oppose Israel on any issue, then you are against Israel.

It is the same logic as George W. Bush advocated, when he stated that you can be either for us or against us -- there is no middle ground.

The flip-side of the "you are either for me or against me" argument is "I am either for you or against you" -- depending on one's perspective.

If Turkey disagrees with Israel, that not only means Turkey is against Israel, but Israel is against Turkey, under the considered logic.

Of course, the so-called "logic" is sham in the first place. You do not have to agree with your friends every time, nor disagree with your enemies every time.

Liz Cheney? You wrote an article about Liz Cheney and what she 'thinks'?! That's as absurd as an article about Palin's thoughts on policy!

WaPo, you were always pathetic, but now you're just embarrassing.

Hint: You don't need to quote a wingnut just to prove "balance." That's like quoting Flat-Earthers on an article about new astronomical discoveries.

Again, this airhead gets national exposure and media attention well beyond what her intellectual abilities would ordinarily merit. The name Cheney is like cancer, you can have an operation or send it into remission through medication but doggone if it doesn't pop up again a few months later.

So just to be clear, nothing Israel has done over the past 60 years has contributed to their isolation and instead their isolation begins sometime in late January 2009, right Liz?

Hate to break it to you Lizzie, a healthy relationship with Turkey is as important, if not more important than is a relationship with this Israeli government.

Posted by: army164 | June 6, 2010 2:08 PM | Report abuse

This airhead gives Sarah Palin a run for her know-nothing money. Turkey is a key ally of the United States and in general has the true interests of the United States at heart. If he US had heeded the rational advice of Turkey to avoid a purposeless fiasco of a war with Iraq, rather than traitorous lies and claptrap of the Cheneys, imagine how much better off we would be now. Seriously, though, why do ABC and the Post give these people any attention? I know the Republican party has gone off the deep end or the time being, but there must be *someone* on the right who is not a buffoon and can present thoughtful arguments from a different perspective.

Just curious, when is the media going to interview the Bush twins about Israel. Or maybe they should be after Amy Carter, since her father did so much with Begin and Sadat? I mean, we all know that the apple doesn't fall that far from the tree, right?

Seriously, what sort of real credentials does Liz Cheney have, other than her dad's name? That the Post is wasting time reporting on her statements only further highlights the fact that this paper has gone off the deep end into neo-con farce.

Liz Cheney should know Israel is our biggest enemy, not Turkey. Israel creates enemies for the US because of traitors like Liz Cheyney who bow to Israeli flag before her own US flag, she is the insideous double agent of Israel and not an American.

Israels enemies are not Americas enemies, let israel make its own enemies, why should America make Israels enemies its own enemies.

Turkey is a great ally of the US, granting it military bases, and is part of NATO.
