Michelle Obama skips town

By Anne E. Kornblut
President Obama may be working late, but First Lady Michelle Obama is apparently getting a break - on an unannounced trip to California this week, her office said.

The First Lady's trip is on "private travel the rest of the week with her kids," spokeswoman Katie McCormick-Lelyveld said on Tuesday. She declined to offer further details of how long Mrs. Obama and the girls will be away, or where, exactly, in California they have gone.

It is not unheard of for First Ladies to skip town unnoticed. Laura Bush occasionally headed to New York to go to the theater, shopping or to see her daughters in college, without making the trips public.

But Michelle Obama's absence raised a critical question: Who is tending to the garden?

jhrt - Mrs. Obama never said that she hated ANY AMERICAN nor has she ever said that she HATED AMERICA!! Justify your claims with facts!

The constant "playing" of the original sound bite and the distortion of it is tiring!

You do realize - she doesn't really garden?

kcx7, because she hates America. Said herself that she's "never been proud of America". So when she blows us off, we like to point it out.

Creating the royal-ish title of "First Lady" was one of President Zachary Taylor's less inspired moves.

In a true democracy, we'd refer to the President's spouse as .. "Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr. Whatever", not some contrived monarchical title.

And yeah, a member of the President's family taking a vacation shouldn't be news. We rightfully don't make an issue about Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi's spouses' vacations, nor about Chief Justice Roberts' wife's vacations; why make an exception for the chief of the Executive Branch?

The Obamas think they won a 4-year lottery. It's photo-ops and fun and free travel and meaningless words; today is "military families" and tomorrow it's "childhood obesity" and who knows what it will be tomorrow. Obama is an empty suit that talks but cannot lead, make decisions or stand up to big money or the military. The US has never been in a worse overall situation, and they party on. She sure sends a message about the gulf, doesn't she? As in, "What, me worry?"

If I planted one, it would have to be far from Michelle O, otherwise it would be in the shade all the time. If she isn't proud of my country, I'm sure as heck not proud of her.

The First Lady and the girls deserved this get away, and I wish them a safe trip and great fun. Unfortunately the President has to deal with the horribly situation in the Gulf Coast, but hopefully we all experience a miracle to cease this problem so we and especially the residents of the Gulf can get on with their lives. By the way commentor, plant your own garden.

Well since she, by her own words, "has never been proud of this country", maybe she should have left America for somewhere that she could be proud of...Cuba. Venezuela, Yemen....you know somewhere that hatesw us as much as she does.

What can she do? With schools out and the uncertainty about the trip to Indonesia and Australia already cancelled 2-3 times, she has to take kids somewhere! And I bet the President did not take them along to the Gulf Coast he visits on sdhedule.
