Obama devotes weekly address to criticism of Congress

By Scott Wilson
A frustrated President Obama assailed congressional Republicans on Saturday for holding up legislation he said is important to the country's economic recovery, and he called for up-or-down votes on the measure and on scores of his nominees in the Senate as soon as possible.

"I was disappointed this week to see a dreary and familiar politics get in the way of our ability to move forward on a series of critical issues that have a direct impact on people's lives," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Obama has often sprinkled criticism of Washington's partisan culture - a target of his 2008 campaign - throughout his weekly addresses. But he has rarely devoted the entire speech to the subject, and his doing so Saturday was a sign of his exasperation and concern that a failure to push through measures to benefit the staggering economy could hurt his party in the November elections.

The bills before the Senate include one that would extend unemployment benefits and provide federal aid to states struggling with grave fiscal problems. It failed to win enough support in the Senate this week to come to the floor for a vote.

Another measure Obama cited would lift the $75 million cap on damages that oil companies must pay to those affected by oil spills. A number of Democratic senators have pushed to raise the limit, now two decades old, in light of the Gulf oil spill. It, too, is stalled.

Obama also said 136 of his nominees for federal posts are awaiting a confirmation vote in the Senate. He said "all are highly qualified, very few are controversial."

"The vast majority already have support from both parties," Obama said. "But most of them are seeing their nominations intentionally delayed by Republican leaders, or even blocked altogether."

Senate Republicans have argued against some of the measures, particularly those requiring more spending at a time of projected budget deficits that Obama himself has called "unsustainable."

Senate Democrats also held up some of President George W. Bush's nominees, although congressional researchers have found that more of Obama's nominees have waited longer for a confirmation vote than in the previous administration.

In a statement Friday, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky) said, "Americans want us to show we're serious about lowering the debt, so the President and his allies in Congress have a choice to make."

"They can either vote to reduce the deficit, or they can lock arms and dig an even deeper hole of debt when most Americans think $13 trillion [the current national debt] is far too much already," he said. "The choice isn't between passing a bill or not. It's whether or not we add tens of billions more to the debt in the process."

In his address, Obama said, "The political season is upon us in Washington, but gridlock as a political strategy is destructive to the country."

"Whether we are Democrats or Republicans, we've got an obligation that goes beyond caring about the next election," he said. "We have an obligation to care for the next generation. So I hope that when Congress returns next week, they do so with a greater spirit of compromise and cooperation. America will be watching."

Nobody but a WaPo hack pays any attention to Barry's snoozefest anyway. On a Saturday morning I am out for a drive, and if the radio is on it is for music or a baseball game, not Barry the incompetent boob Obama.

Who gathers around the radio at home and dials in the president like it is 1932? Nobody.

Barack Obama is the one who is blocking America's recovery. The man is so self absorbed and obsessed that he either doesn't know what he has done to damage this country, or he doesn't care.

We can't get rid of him soon enough.

CNN's and the rest of main street media's poster boy Obama is a total failure! 3.5 years of democrat rule, a multi-trillion dollar health care bill to insure 30 million and hundreds of billions spent on one jobless bill after another in the name of stimulus! Yet, used to pay wages and union benefits of existing workers! LOL
Sure there are shovel ready jobs and a street of two was paved with the funds! But when you do the math what is the real cost per job saved or created! A year wasted on healthcare and no jobs for the majority of the unemployed or new grads. Yet, last month 100,000 visas were issued to foreign workers to come here to work! God help us all!

It is absolutely mind boggling how Democrats are so far out of touch with reality, that they blame 41 of 100 senators for holding back economic recovery. When Dems had a 60 percent majority in the Senate, they USED their blank check to basically bankrupt the nation with their (anti) stimulus bill that is now a led weight around the nations neck.

NOVEMBER 2010 is when America SLAPS back the Socialists who can't take responsibility for their own ineptitude.

Say what you will, this partisan behavior by Republicans is having a negative affect on their constituents.

For several years now I kept hearing that the GOP is a party for the rich and powerful. I did not believe it until now. By shutting of money for the unemployed masses to feed and house their families it proves to me what I have heard. I will be voting every Republican I can out of office at the upcoming elections.

Embarrassed to say that I WAS a Republican for 20 years. I am not a big fan of Obama or the Democratic party but at least they are thinking of the suffering of the American public in these sad times.

I simply do not want to be govern by the trash in the White House, and I don't want people like you, analyst72, making voting decisions that will affect me. I think that's the direction this country should go! The only reason you don't like Republicans is because you don't have a job and want us taxpayers to support you. While Congress deserves a fair share of blame for our current economic woes (more accurately for conspiring with the Obama Administration in producing a still born economic stimulus recovery package), the Obama Administration is the party which decided to load the plan with aid to public service jobs and to go light on tax cuts for business and other fiscal stimulus which might have produced a greater multiplier for the bucks spent.

But, when you are focused on ramming through an idealogical agenda and in rewarding all the interest groups which helped elect you, there is a tendency to lose objectivity. In fact, you lose all perspective and try to do too much with available resources; then, when that approach fails, you propose even more spending in the guise of a second stimulus. I thought one definition of insanity was to try to solve a problem with a solution which did not work the first time?

Between the stimulus plan, TARP and the Fed opening its discount window to Wall Street we have now thrown three to four trillion into stabalizing and stimulating our economy. Never in the history of this nation has so much been spent for so little return and real economic stimulus. Maybe at some point even the President and his crack team of adviors (most of whom come from Goldman Sachs or other Wall Street banks) will get the message what they are doing is folly. Then again, maybe not and we can throw another couple of trillion onto our kids due bill.

Take everything the "Kenyan Conman" says and reverse it, and you will find the truth. If by mistake, a truthfull statement ever sewed out of one side of "it's" (He, she, hers, his are reserved for humans ; it, it's for subhuman), "it" would just lie out of the other side just to keep in balance. "It" couldn't lie straight in bed.

The last "stimulus" package (better described as the "farm" bill - 99% pork) had the terrific effect of causing the loss of 2.6 million private jobs in the country, and 400,000 new governmment jobs. I'd say we don't really need too much more of that. 400,000 public jobs requires 2,000,000 WORKERS, payingn taxes to pay for all these extra publicly payed (as opposed to employed) parasites, and that is if ALL there hard earned taxes go strictly to payrole.

===========================================

This quotation came from the Czech Republic . Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do here.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

Barry, the Great Deceiver is opposed because his so called policies are straight out of the marxixt play book, and thank heavens most Americans don't believe in collectivism. Reading this thread makes me consider how people would have reacted if we experienced a no-stimulus free fall. Bush didn't WANT to do TARP, and Obama didn't WANT to do the ARRA. The government can only do so much in reaction to a market crash. It only has so many levers it can pull. Both presidents pulled the one lever that WASN'T pulled during the Great Depression, and that was the fast, early implementation of stimulus. The effect, it appears, is not only was the free fall halted, but the people who took part in the bad fiscal behavior (Wall Street AND Main Street) have decided that the government saving them from breadlines isn't enough to be happy with the results.

Please do not bring the race card into the discussion here, please don't let that be entertained in this forum. I believe that over 95% of America was pleased to have the first Black president our great country has ever known.

Now, the usual race baiters will use anything to keep the issue front and center, when in reality, America has long since moved away from such evil and has moved in a much more enlightened arena today than we did all those years ago before Martin Luther King.

There are many, myself included, who do not agree with Obama's ideology or agenda; however, this has nothing to do with how I feel about the man himself. Personally, I believe one would be hard put to dislike Obama under normal circumstances. He is extremely likable and charming and a genuinely nice person with a wonderful family. And, I have never even heard from anyone that I know that would ever even contemplate wishing him harm or have ever mentioned his race to me. They may very well wish his policies not be implemented, but that is a far cry from hating or disliking a person for the color of his skin.

No, TheBabeNemo, you do us all a disservice when you say the things you have said here today. Please think before you speak in future, because I know beyond any doubt that what you say is wrong, completely wrong, and even the mention of racial hatred brings old hurts to many. Don't cloud important issues with the blood of those who suffered so much to just be free, you demean them by doing so.

Whatever happened to the rhetoric during his campaign that he was going to change Washington's atmosphere and no more 'business as usual,' which most of us understood to be partisan bickering and pointing fingers of blame continually. Obama has done more of what he preached against than any president in memory. I mean, it's appalling to listen to such an intelligent man stand before the country and speak like the bully on the school yard playground. Obama has been cut throat, calculating, aloof, arrogant and divisive "from day one". He and his liberal political elites think they know what's best for the people and the bigger the government the better. He has routinely ignored the will of the people (debt, health care, borders), and while his most noticeable feature are his big ears, he lacks the common sense to use them.

For America, this means 13 trillion dollars in debt and rising to 17-19 trillion before he is through. Debt service of up to $ 1 trillion a year. A permanent reduction in the lifestyle of all of our descendants. The end of American exceptionalism and the gross reduction of American power. Massive unemployment. An ever smaller number of productive people supporting an ever growing number of government workers . Massive inflation. Abandoning the dollar as the world's reserve currency. And the laughter of China, Russia and every two bit dictator in the middle east, Asia and South America.

Every day when I turn on my computer there is one more thing posted that the Obama administration and the Democrats are doing to take over the country and destroy our freedoms. Obama is chronically detached from the central and immediate concerns of "The People" he was hired to serve, instead, he is dragging America into the alternate universe of his Socialistic ideology. He thrives in the ether of platitudes, having no interest in or ability to perform actual leadership. We are now experiencing the effects and may well be in for a very rough ride these next 2.3 years.

As Lou Holtz says, “Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.” The issue is how Obama and his bumbling, finger-pointing, evasive group of academic administrators fully and completely bungle their jobs demonstrating daily their inability to handle almost anything.

Thank God Republicans in the US Congress are blocking socialist legislation that is anti-business, an assault on free market capitalism, a reprehensible attack on Senior Americans, and economically disastrous to the middle-class.

With a 60 vote veto proof majority in the Senate, and a big House majority too, the Democrats can pass anything that they want to, so Obama is full of sh** and is a liar when he claims that this bad economy is the Republicans fault. This bad economy is the result of Obama's incompetency and his Socialist/Communist agenda of re-distributing all wealth, nationaizing private industry, forced unionization, running up the deficit to 3 times what it was under Bush, and his outright war against the very people who've made this country the greatest, richest, and most powerfull on the planet that has ever existed. It's not rocket science. Obama is a big phony. One day he says the stimulus is working, then says he needs more. One day he says the budget is a problem so he starts PayGo. Then submits proposals as emergencies so he can bypass PayGo. There is still $400B of unspent stimulus - how many people realize that? If his proposals are so important than use the unspent stimulus or cut the "fat". Obama spent nearly $1M to go to Ohio to give a 10 minute speech this week. The only thing the dems know is tax & spend, tax & spend, tax & spend,....

As far as Obama's nominees, check out Obama's support for Bush's nominees: zero.

Posted by: Tostitos | June 19, 2010 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Obama seems more concerned about probable significant Democratic party losses in the elections than a tiny third stimulus bill being enacted. The main purpose of the "stimulus" bill is to help a few hundred thousand public employees keep their jobs. Along with expanding unemployment benefits for some people through November, this hardly constitutes either a stimulus or jobs bill.

Hardly any jobs in the private sector will be saved or created. There will be hardly any discernible help to the economy. Obama will further undermine his credibility if he persists in claiming otherwise.

So Obama wants to spend even more money, as if what he already spent wasn't enough. The federal government is spending more than its tax revenues by just printing money. Obama thinks this is OK, which is scary. The "stimulus" money already spent has gone to state and local politicians to subsidize their budgets. That is not stimulating the economy; it's just subsidizing state and local governments. Then there is the "green economy". That little boondoggle is taxpayer money subsidizing politically-connected firms which are not economicly viable. The stimulus bill was just a $787 billion political slush fund to be spent by politicians. If anybody thinks the economy is recovering, they are on welfare or are Wall Street executives. For ordinary taxpayers, it's not looking good.

LONDON — In what one environmentalist described as "yet another public relations disaster" for embattled energy giant BP, CEO Tony Hayward took time off Saturday to attend a glitzy yacht race around England's Isle of Wight.

As social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook lit up with outrage, BP spokespeople rushed to defend Hayward, who has drawn withering criticism as the public face of BP's halting efforts to stop the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

Spokeswoman Sheila Williams said Hayward took a break from overseeing BP efforts to stem the undersea gusher in Gulf of Mexico so he could watch his boat "Bob" participate in the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. The 52-foot yacht is made by the Annapolis, Maryland-based boatbuilder Farr Yacht Design.
....

In related news, Joe Barton and the republicans apologized to Hayward for inconveniencing him around the time of such an important sailboat race, and begged his forgiveness.

That really IS the result of 8 years of mind-numbing idiocy while Bush held the reins of power.

Here's a solution to increase tax revenues and decrease government spending on the unemployed. Employ them.

Offer hiring preferences for federal jobs to the unemployed much like veteran preferences but based on the length of unemployment. Additionally, cancel government contracts with private sector employers that are refusing to hire the unemployed and shift the burden of paying unemployment benefits back to the previous employers of newly unemployed government contractors where it belongs.

Award government contracts to small and disadvantaged businesses that are hiring the unemployed until you flush the system of employers that are not contributing to the economic recovery. Small business would be happy to have the work. There would be no need to pay them tax incentives since securing a government contract would be reward enough.

This is a win-win for everyone. Tax revenues would increase, federal unemployment benefits would decrease, the unemployed will become gainfully employed, and small businesses would have a shot at new business opportunities.

Big business can continue to offshore jobs and refuse to hire unemployed Americans, and the GOP would be elated by the declines in government spending and payment of unemployment benefits.

Problem solved.

Jimbob, Bush the idiot and his idiot team spent billions to get us here. Then broke us. Simple economics will tell you you have to put the resources back in to the country. However, GOPs want to stall and go down the same path that got us here. How short term your memory is. Bush and the GOPS have sent billions of tax payer money to oil companies, wars(Obama the same on this) and contractor cronies. Cheney is now making millions off of it since he is no longer in office. The difference is we now need to spend it on us and that is what is trying to be done. Though where is your outrage in spending it on Iraq and Afghanistan. Those two get us in the deepest hole. The approach the GOP is using now is the same moronic bs that made the Depression way worse than it needed to be in the 30's. Matter of fact we may have avoided it all together if the Senate allowed the government to spend more on the country before instead of lies and ignorance about deficit.

I don't think the American voters will allow the republicans to get the majority. Although the media constantly headlines the tea partiers, radicals and mostly biased for the right, there are many of us out there that are appalled by the behavior of these people. When you have politicians like Bachman, Palin, Barton, and the rest of the irresponsible, commentators like Limbaugh, Beck etc who promote hate and anger, it turns intelligent people off. Ours is not a nation of radicals, ours is a nation that is proud, honorable and sincere about the survival of our country.
The "Silent Majority" will not remain silent when it comes to voting for the welfare of our country and us.

According to a USA Today poll, 60% of Americans favor further spending on jobs to start up the economy. So why the GOP opposition to Obama's proposal for further stimulus? Politics. The GOP hopes to stall everything Obama does until the Nov elections for political leverage. If we had a GOP president guess what? We would be spending money on jobs stimulus just as Obama is doing. It was Bush II who started all the stimulus spending, so it is clear the GOP would be adopting the same strategy. They got their deficit religion after Obama was elected.

The GOP would rather stall than stimulate. But once they get majorities in the senate and house, let's see what they do. Will they let the country slide into depression? Not a chance. As they always have done in Congress or the White House, the GOP is about spend, spend, spend. Reagan did it, Bush I did it, and Bush II did it. So would Rush Limbaugh if elected.

The American gig is to always complain about gov spending, but when the rubber hits the pavement the end result is always an increase in gov spending. Why? Because as much as we "hate" government (which dates back to the 13 colonies), we love our social programs more. We are hypocrites, and it is accepted behavior on this side of the pond. Any person faced with the full force of 100% out of pocket medical and retirement costs quickly retreats into Social Security and Medicare. For all the Tea Party talk about tax cutting, none of them would ever abolish SS and Medicare. If they tried they would be thrown out of office on their keister.

Yes, we all want to pay no taxes yet receive great services. We somehow believe that $1 spent in taxes should yield $100 worth of services.

Just as with oil, we take our services for granted. Our generation has never lived without good gov services.

I pay less in Taxes, less for Food, and less for Gasoline now than when Bush was in Office. I would rather pay more in taxes to create Jobs than see Unemployment continue to Increase. If we do not invest in Job Creation, more people will lose their Jobs (especially Government Workers and their Posh Benefits) and there will be less People to pay taxes for anything.

Job Growth is too Slow because we are not making enough Investment in the Fastest Growing Industries while China, Japan and South Korea are making Massive Investments in Clean Energy Jobs and Industries. This is where the Jobs will be if we continue to sit on the sidelines while they Economically Arm themselves. We cannot sell Warships costing Hundreds of Billions but they can Sell us Hundreds of Billions of Windmills and Solar Panels.

The USA, is Paying **Trillions** for Civilian and Military Expenses that we Borrow Money from China and Europe to Pay for. It makes no sense to Borrow Money to Support Tax breaks for the most Wealthy of Americans. The Wealthiest Love to Complain while others Starve:

* $2 Trillion in Bush Era Tax Breaks
* $2 Trillion annually for Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid
* $693.6 Billion and rising in annual Defense Spending ($722 Billion for 2010)
* $184 Billion for AIG
* $200 Billion for Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac
* Hundreds of Billions for Doctors Medicare payments, State Jobs, Unemployed, etc.,

Where do you think this money comes from? We need to produce products we can sell abroad to pay these bills. We also have to stop giving a free ride to the most Wealthy, and to the Polluting Oil, Coal, and Livestock Industries. Limit any new Billion Plus Spending to Programs that will Make Money, Provide Jobs, and Save us Money over the long term such as Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Technology.

GOP Senators and Congressmen may not care about Clean Energy or Nuclear Weapons in the hands of Terrorists because we are sending Billions of Dollars for Oil to the Middle East and Terrorist supporters but by God I care about ELIMINATING the money we send to Terrorists for Nuclear Weapons.

China invested $100 Billion for High Speed Rail in 2009 and $120 Billion for 2010. China invested $35 Billion in Clean Energy Production in ’09 versus USA investment of $18 Billion. China is investing its Trade Surplus into Chinese Jobs. The USA Defense Budget for Products we cannot Sell was $693.6 Billion for '09 (& $722 Billion for '10) while China’s is roughly $150 Billion.

End Bush era $2 Trillion in tax cuts, End the $15 Billion a year in Feedstock and Cotton Subsidies to Rich Farming Companies, End Billions in Fossil Fuel Subsidies for Multi-Billion dollar profiteering Oil companies; and Tax Large Scale (Oil, Coal, Livestock) Polluters and Imported Oil to Pay for new Jobs legislation.

Americans Cannot Afford to Continue Subsidizing Oil, Coal, and Livestock Pollution.

Clean Energy Technologies creates Jobs, Private Investment and Tax Revenue while Producing Products we can sell to the world. We Cannot Sell Multi-Billion 100% Taxpayer Funded Military Hardware but we can Sell Taxpayer and Private Industry Funded Wind, Solar, Torrefactioned Biomass, Stationary Fuel Cell, Nuclear, Hydro, Natural Gas, and Efficient Freight Rail Systems to meet Global Needs.

Every week Soldiers are coming home in Body Bags while shoppers flock to buy Chinese products which funds new Jobs and Industries in China. China is happy to keep subsidizing our debt so we can purchase products made in China and Create Jobs and Industries in China.

The USA has 5% of World Population, uses 25% of the world’s Oil, and has only 2~3% of it. 70% of our Oil use is in the Transportation sector. No amount of Domestic Drilling (Onshore and Offshore) will Adjust that number Even a Single Percentage Point or have any effect on the price of Oil on World Markets.

What will have the greatest effect on Reducing USA Dependence on Oil, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Venezuela and OPEC is “Using a Lot Less”.

We can Use less and Create Jobs making Products we can sell by;

• Taxing All Imported Oil
• Enacting a strong Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard of 25% by 2025,
• Pricing Carbon from Large Scale Polluters
• Decoupling Energy Utility earnings from increased Sales
• Developing Freight Rail (such as along the I-81 corridor);
• Ending Wall Street Energy Derivative speculation that drives up the Price of Oil;

These actions provide the greatest Bang-for-the-Buck for Energy Jobs and Investment without sacrificing other Multi-Billion dollar industries and White Sand beaches.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. That seems to be the definition of the Republican party and conservative Democrats too. Tax cuts for the rich have not trickled down or stimulated the economy yet that has been their mantra since 1980. Instead they have created a society of ultra rich and extreme poverty while shrinking the middle class and exporting good jobs. We have the example of FDR and the depression that tells us that it is dangerous to stop a stimulus program while unemployment is still high. Where were these deficit hawks when the Bush administration was taking a surplus and turning it into record deficits with tax cuts for the rich and unnecessary wars whose costs were hidden and not included in the budget until Obama took office and was honest enough to include them. The best thing that could be done for this country would be to abolish the Senate since they are so beholden to corporations and big business that they cannot govern effectively.

Obama is the most repulsively partisan President of my life time. Bush was a disaster, but at least he didn't try to dishonestly place himself above our rancid politics. Obama, you are NOT above politics -- you are taking our rancid politics and making it downright toxic to all Americans.

Furthermore, despite the media's desparate attempt to paint this narcissist as a "pragmatist" or a "moderate" -- he is not. He is on a personal crusade to give himself a chapter or more in the history books by pursuing a radical agenda that has nothing to do with solving our problems at hand or making sound investments in the future. Instead of sound investments, we get welfare, pork, handouts to liberal special interests, and legally questionable and economically disastrous meddling in business.

I'd take another decade of Bill Clinton with open arms than another minute of this radical and selfish fool who does nothing but campaign, poison our politics further, and phony moralize. This man is a total disgrace and is lousy because there are so many better people in even the Democrat Party that could lead this nation -- like Harold Ford and Evan Bayh. Obama doesn't lead. He has no concept. He's never held a real job for very long -- and when he was a professor, instead of writing serious academic research as most law professors do, he wrote a book about himself.

Barack Obama couldn't manage flippin' burgers and day after day, his temper tantrums and ineptitude are exposed.

Instead you decided to borrow and pass on 1.3 trillion mostly to the wealthy, borrow a trillion more for two wars (one of which was completely unnecessary) and borrow another yet unknown amount for a prescription drug plan for seniors. To sit there and act like you know what is best for our country is galling.

Both President Obama and BP should be applauded by all Americans for being proactive in seeing that the victims of Deepwater Horizon will be made somewhat whole in the present. A master stroke of cooperation on both sides. Due process is a wonderful thing. However, had it run its course as Barton was bleating it may have been years before they where made whole again. And surely at least 30% of anything awarded would have went into the lawyers pockets. Hasn't anyone heard of settling out of court? 20 billion is a drop in the bucket to BP, about 2 quarters of dividends is all. If BP felt it was being strong armed (which obviously wasn't the case) it would have demanded due process and the legal system would have complied.
The 2010 election will be decided on if we have made any progress in cleaning up the hemorrhage of lifeblood that has been leaking from this country since the 2000 election. The Republican party in comparison blew the wellhead off the United States of America and let it spew forth for 8 long years as they carried away as many buckets of our prosperity as they could, not caring about the aftermath that would follow. An 8 year free for all of ineptitude, mismanagement and greed culminating in the current economic crisis. The Republican leadership should be in front of a congressional hearing answering to why they let the country get into the state it is in. Deepwater may leak for 6 to 8 months and experts say it will be years in the cleanup and restoration of habitat. GW and his gang of bandits allowed this country to bleed out for 8 long years and we are now just feeling and dealing with the effects. Is everything repaired and restored, no. Is progress being made?, Yes, absolutely. Are new safety measures being implemented in the form of laws to prevent such recklessness and mismanagement from occurring again? Yes. Is President Obama acting in the best interests of the American people in general? Yes! Lets thank God he is not immersed in and focused on a children s book during this assault on our shores by a foreign invader. The man is on the job, taking care of business in the best interests of the people!! If ever the spirit of Abraham Lincoln were to manifest it is embodied in the person of Barak Obama.

I think it is just possible that some of the legislation on the hill is just bad legislation.

We cannot continue to spend our way into a point where there is no return.

There is a time when our government is going to have to say, "we cannot do that now". Our debt is embarrassing as a country and we seemingly do not have the will to stop spending.

So, I would say "obstruction" is a good at this point. It is being used to prevent something unstainable for the country.

Blaming never permits us to look within; possible we need to be "quiet" for a while. .too much babble going on and some of it is not healthy.

Republicans are saying we have to cut the deficit? Of course they are. They also said that Reagan's 1981 tax cuts would bring economic success, that Clinton's tax hikes would destroy the country, and that Dubya's tax cuts would bring an unprecedented economic boom. They've been wrong on every major economic call for the last thirty years.

When you cut spending in the middle of a recession, the economy gets worse. Deficit hawks have proved that over and over again. If it wasn't for Obama's stimulus bill, we'd be locked in a worldwide depression right now. Instead, employment figures are the best they've been since the middle of Dubya's last term. You can find economists who disagree, but they all work for Fox News and the Heritage Foundation.

When will Democrats stop blaming Republicans? When right-wingers stop putting their dogma ahead of the country.

Oil, gas and coal will darken our skies and warm the planet.

Obama can lead us there.

Obamadoofus makes Carter seem like a genius. His "stimulus" was a disaster unless one was an Obama crony. The private sector continues to spiral downwards with little hope of recovery. Americans aren't spending - because their either out of work, under mountains of debt, or so inundated by the tax burdens that they have nothing to spend. It's time that we send these Chicago gangsta's back to where they came from.

where was all this caterwauling when the texas flameout was funneling billions to his war profiteering corporate masters -- off-budget. and obama carries on that grand traditions of increasing the monstrously bloated pentagon budget annually.

Isn't the purpose of the stimulus plan to stimulate the economy and put more Americans back to work?

Mohegan Sun Casino received $54 million of that fund. Thank you again, Chris Dodd. They bring in over a billion a year and provide for a relatively small group of Native Americans. They're going to build a community center? I've been through that area in Conn. and driven through reservations out west. I would say that the Mohegan Sun area is far better off and considerably smaller than reservations out west.

The public may finally force Obama to withdraw all the troops from the middle-east because he's run out of money needed to keep them there. It's about time. If he wants more "domestic" spending, he'll have to get that by cutting "non-domestic" spending 'cause there are no other choices.

Obama is becoming laughable.
Dangerous but laughable.

THE most partisan president in memory-including Democrats and Republicans-is accusing the oppoosition Republicans of being partisan because they stand in the way of Obama throwing another trillion dollars away?!

Thank goodness SOMEONE is trhying to stop the wild spending of Obama and the Democrats.

Obama always accuses his opponents of what he himself is guilty of doing-in this case partisanship.

Both liberals and conservatives have come to realize that you can't believe a word this president says.

He was "disappointed this week?" While millions of unemployed continue to suffer day after day after day? He finally got around to us...ho hum.

This guy doesn't know how to convey in words the difference you feel when you find a lump in your breast and how you feel when you order a ham sandwich.

Oh, and Mr. President? It's nice that you agree that we have an obligation to take care of Madeline, but don't we ALSO have an obligation to take care of the children who are here NOW? They're the ones that are suffering in real time.

trippermeow cites 1 trillion dollars that Obama has already used in trying to stimulate the economy. The Republican Congress under "W" gave rich folks a 1.3 trillion tax kickback while creating a massive deficit at the same time. I'll bet that trippermeow did not complain about that.

Let's all hope that this Republican-led impediment does not turn out like FDR's mistake back when the country was in a similar mess!

The opposition has a moral responsibility to prevent Barry from spending us into bankruptcy with his hair-brained leftist schemes. Maybe if he had shown some knowledge and competence, and a true willingness to compromise, he would have achieved something and not needed his childish displays of temperament to get his way. Holding your breath until you turn blue and stomping your feet does not work and denigrates his office to the detriment of the country.

Obama is like a kid who has learned to blame. Woefully unprepared to be president, certainly the wrong man for the times. I like the way the we are told that senate democrats are also holding things up. Barry needs to lead, and compromise is part of leadership.

More double-talk...

He says "We have an obligation to care for the next generation."

I agree. Unfortunately, everything he has done since he's been in Washington has been with the next generation's money.

You want to care for them?

STOP SPENDING THEIR MONEY! Paying some of it back wouldn't be a bad start. He doesn't even have a plan to do that. Whatever happened to leaving it in better shape than when you got there?

STOP telling people that they have a "right" to this and that. A right doesn't cost anything; it is something that you have just because you exist, and it doesn't require anything from anybody, except protection from those who want to take it away. Entitlements are something that government can give you by passing a law, but when you don't have money, you can't entitle someone else to it.

He wants to move forward? Again, I agree. However, you need to turn the car in a far different direction before you press the gas pedal...otherwise, going "forward" is really taking you backwards.

The Senate is a millstone around the neck of the USA. Old white men who do the bidding of Corporate America at the expense of the people. I say take a few of them out.

How many jobs did the 18 billion Jobs Bill create? That bill was to pay a pittance to companies to hire the unemployed for whom there was no work and no business coming through the door to pay their salaries. That was 18 billion dollars of nonsense designed only to make the voters THINK something was getting done, i.e., that the President had a "Focus on Jobs".

Had Obama given tax cuts to every American, instead of these top down Stimulus projects, this recession would be over.

All this incompetent slug Odumbo knows is how to add to the national debt.

He and his corrupt party need to be turned out of office at the earliest opportunity.

November cannot come soon enough, and the democrat manure needs to be shoveled out of office until the White House is ultimately cleaned out in 2012.

Let's take a poll and and see if the American people want to pass Obama's deficit spending to give money to the teachers union, pay people to stay unemployed for over 99 weeks, and also give huge tax breaks to large multinational corporations.... I will abide by their decision, will Obama?

Posted by: cautious | June 19, 2010 6:43 AM | Report abuse

Obama, you went through 1 "trillion" dollars that didn't stimulate the economy. Over 95% of the jobs created on your watch have been "non-revenue producing" government jobs. Perhaps you need a reality check, eh?
