Obama on the spill: 'I can't suck it up with a straw'

President Obama outlined the limits of his power to handle the oil spill in the latest episode of "West Wing Week," the casual weekly White House online show.

"Even though I'm president of the United States, my power is not limitless," he told Grand Isle, La., locals in the video, released Friday. "So I can't dive down there and plug the hole. I can't suck it up with a straw. All I can do is make sure that I put honest, hard-working smart people in place ... to implement this thing."

You've got to be kidding! A feeble response if ever there was one, and it unfortunately brings to mind a distasteful image of a former President and his intern...

If he's concerned, finally, about putting the right people in the right place, why not waive the Jones Act???

See, for example:
http://hotair.com/greenroom/archives/2010/06/12/what-is-the-jones-act-and-why-wont-obama-waive-it/

and

http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/usa/Dutch-say-They-Could-Speed-Gulf-Oil-Recovery-with-US-Permission-96341579.html

Why not put aside spewing rhetoric and try to make sure 95% of resources are being spent on just fixing the leak, instead of trying to find someone to blame, sue, and bring civil or criminal charges against? Mr Obama, please set aside the shenanigans and work WITH BP to fix the leak and skim up the oil near the source. I expect that voters will remember the Administration's and Congressional Majority's actions -- or lack thereof in November...

Omar, if you live in a world where the bar is set at Bush/Palin, no wonder you think Obama is doing such a fine job. Some of us expect better. Much better. Especially after the lessons of Bush. What we got instead is an empty suit and a teleprompter who makes Bush look only mildly incompetent. We deserve more than that. BTW, what's up with [the brackets]?

Make up your mind, "It's BP's problem, I am the President, the buck stops with me. Now my power is not limitless.

During epic foreclosures, jobless was less important than Healthcare (with 54 % DISAPPROVAL) from the people. This should have been put on the ballot for the people to decide. Now the massive historic oil rig explosion, what a legacy. Then a little spice of his going’s on with Vera Baker, ouch.

Doesn't matter who is in charge during these times, they are the fall guy, and that straw Obama spoke of, he is struck with short straw. Tag, your IT.

Mr. President you have given a perfect answer. Nothing to add. When we heard of Exxon Valdez.. saw no one trying to put such pressure on. As you said you or anyone with some common sense-- can only bring the best minds/experts together to work at bringing the leak to an end.

The rest-- criticisms, empty platitudes.

When you have the ENTIRE EPA, Navy & Coast Guard at your disposal?

Pathetic.

Omaar,

The common theme of those giving Pres. a pass - INCLUDING O'Reilly, Beck, etc. - is that THEY'VE NEVER MANAGED ANYTHING!

Neither has Obama & it's shown itself here.

1st response was late, muddied, bureaucratic.

Has not met with BP IN EIGHT WEEKS!

Has not independently used power of the office to compel action, convene heads of major oil co's, etc. to GET THIS SOLVED!

Everyone needs to get over it - he's a TOTAL FAILURE WHO WILL BE GONE AFTER 2012.

I mean, if he was a real leader - and actually cared about this - he'd RESIGN NOW & admit he's in WAAAAAAAAAAAY OVER HIS HEAD.

Take some personal accountability - at least Carter did that.

President Obama, I'm just curious; how is it that you can make the oceans rise (as promised in your acceptance speech at the Democratic Convention) but you can't fix this oil spill? It seems to me that the latter would be much easier to do than the former!

Very funny and clever... "The man can't help reverting to the "Straw Man" arguments."

BTW: As for Obama blaming Bush...Remember it was Obama who voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill keeping us dependent on oil as well as subsidizing the corn ethanol industry that uses barrels and barrels of oil to grow corn for ethanol, whereas Hillary and McCain voted against the Bush/Cheney energy bill. Also during the 2008 campaign, it was Obama who received the greatest share of oil monies. Some of us paid attention, but Obama is hoping his blind followers (inc. MSM) will not pay attention to facts.

You always have to check Obama's words carefully. He says, "All I can do is make sure that I put honest, hard-working smart people in place ... to implement this thing."
WRONG!!
What you can do is waive the Jones Act and then bring all the world's available resources to bear on the clean-up. Quit worrying about Labor and let's get on with the clean-up. Instead of all available skimmer boats, some of which have advanced clean-up technology, Obama is pussy-footing around worried that he will piss-off his labor union pals.

Obama's approach to the Gulf crisis is senseless. His dimmer advisers tell him he needs to show anger, so he talks about whom to kick? Why doesn't he focus on stopping the leak and cleaning up the oil -- and THEN he can worry about assigning guilt? He needlessly puts himself in the top tier of those responsible!

There is not enough difference between the Democrats and Republicans. Because, I live in very blue voting district, for the first time in my life I had the luxury of "voting my conscience," instead of voting for "the lesser of two evils." I voted for the Green Party candidate, not because I thought she would make a great president, but because I really agree with the Green Party agenda, and I wanted to send a message to the Democrats. I agree that Obama was a better choice than McCain, but only by a small margin. Both Democrats and Republicans have been ripping off the taxpayers, since way before I was born. The thing that worried me about Obama right from the beginning was his warlike and hawkish attitudes. We need to stop giving money to the military, and Obama never talked about that. I invite you to my website devoted to raising awareness on this puritan attack on freedom: http://pltcldscsn.blogspot.com/

Pathetic loser of a man/child! I wonder how this will play to the people of the Gulf Coast? My God we need a leader! Not a spineless spoiled little child! Why were the Dutch skimmers turned away in the first week of this spill? Why is he not focusing on clean up? Why are there berms in warehouses yet nobody to cut thru the red tape? When will this administration be investigated for giving BP permits? Nope, instead old holder is off investigating to see if an illegal aliens civil rights were violated down at the border!
He has sworn to defend this country and he has failed!
