Obama plans immigration speech, but no major announcement

By Anne E. Kornblut
President Obama will give a speech on immigration on Thursday, but it is unlikely to include any new policy initiatives and will not be preceded by an announcement on a Justice Department lawsuit in Arizona, officials said.

The appearance will take place at American University's School of International Service at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, the White House said. Obama has repeatedly called for "comprehensive" immigration reform, although prospects for such legislation, which failed to advance during the Bush administration, appear grim.

Later Tuesday, Obama is scheduled to meet with a group of Hispanic members of Congress that according to a White House release includes:

Representative Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Representative Charles Gonzalez (D-TX), CHC 1st Vice Chair Representative Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX), CHC 2nd Vice Chair, Representative John Salazar (D-CO), CHC Whip Representative Xavier Becerra (D-CA), Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Representative Joe Baca (D-CA), Representative Dennis Cardoza (D-CA), Representative Jim Costa (D-CA), Representative Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ),
Representative Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Representative Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Representative Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Representative Solomon Ortiz (D-TX), Representative Ed Pastor (D-AZ), Representative Pedro Pierluisi (D-PR), Representative Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), Representative Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX), Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Representative Linda Sánchez (D-CA), Representative José Serrano (D-NY), and Representative Albio Sires (D-NJ).

There are 15,000,000 Americans unemployed. There are approximately 8,000,000 illegal aliens working in American jobs. Many of the jobs are skilled construction jobs like carpentry, masonry, roofing, etc. Obama is more interested in the well being of the illegal aliens that invaded our country than we American citizens. We do not need immigration reform. We need to stop immigration period, until all American citizens have a job. I am also tired of the so called president not stopping the thousands of illegal aliens from entering this country, including Mexican, Central American, Chinese, Arabs, and many others. He refuses to actually send armed national guard units to the border to stop this invasion. He refuses to arrest illegal aliens at the work place. He refuses to shut down employers that hire illegal aliens for their cheap labor. Obama wants to make the USA a third world socialist country at any cost to the American citizens. My wife is a fifth generation Hispanic whose ancestors came here legally. She nor her family want the illegal aliens to remain in the USA. Arrest the employers and the illegal aliens. Stop the anchor baby citizenship. Without either of those the illegal aliens will go back to their home countries. Obama should be impeached before he totally destroys this country. You can see what he thinks of real hard working American citizens by his actions on this subject alone. He is suing an American state on behalf of foreign criminals. He is saying what Americans want, by voting freely for laws to stop illegal aliens from getting jobs or remaining in their states, is misguided. In other words, the "exalted one" knows more than the American citizens. He thinks he is the only person with a brain in this country. He is the one that is totally "misguided". He is a danger to our nation. No other country allow babies of illegal aliens or non-citizens to automatically become a citizen. It is crazy to do so. No other country, including Mexico, allows millions of people to enter illegally. We need armed troops on the border. Nepolitano, Holder, and Obama should be tried for lying to a federal official when they took their oaths of office. They are enemies of the people of the United States.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OUR USA LAWS ON IMMAGRATION OTHER THAN THE PRESIDENT OBAMA NOT DOING HIS DUTY OF ENFORCEING THEM. THANKYOU AZ FOR THE COUNTRY'S WAKE UP CALL. I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR ANYONE THAT I CAN THAT WHOULD PUT THESE PLUS 12,000,000 ILLEGALS IN THE USA AHEAD OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. TO ALL YOU THAT ARE IMMAGRANTS HERE IN THE USA, I WELCOME YOU IN YOUR NEW COUNTRY AND HOPE YOU AS CITIZENS HAVE A FULL AND HAPPY LIFE. A IMMAGRANT IS A PERSON FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY THAT HAS OBTAINED CITIZENSHIP IN THE NEW COUNTRY NOW MAKES THAT PERSON A IMMAGRANT OF THAT PERSONS OLD COUNTRY. ILLEGALS ARE ILLEGAL FROM THE FIRST STEP AND DO NOT DESERIVE USA CITIZENSHIP EVER. PRESIDENT OBAMA AND MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, COMPLY FULLY WITH YOUR OATH OF OFFICE FOR WE THE PEOPLE ARE FEED UP WITH THIS ILLEGAL INVATION OF OUR COUNTRY FOR IT WILL BE PAY BACK TIME IN NOVEMBER BY THE PEOPLE.

What is so difficult for supposedly the smartest president we've ever had to understand. American's want a secure border. It's a really big deal right now and there is an election around the corner. If Obama and the dems don't do their job and do it quickly they will be replaced with someone that will.

Illegal aliens newly granted citizenship overwhelmingly vote Democrat. What more need be said??? Doesn't anyone remember 1988?

Posted by: JohnMillsPhotography | June 30, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

The costs and other expenditures for illegal aliens is such a burden on the economy of Arizona and every other state--SOMETHING MUST BE DONE & NOW? Decades of complete disregard for Citizens and legal residents have led us to the edge of a financial precipice. Billions of dollars every year are transferred to other countries to support families, plus even more billions are sent to Mexico to stabilize their economies, but most ends up in the pockets of the corrupt government. The interior of America has become a welfare state for "Anchor Babies", for hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens who have doctored and fraudulent government issued ID's.

This gives them access to welfare entitlements, which is the absolute fault of every Administration since President Bush Senior. Any kind of AMNESTY now will also attribute to a breakdown that will encompass the whole of America. Billions more will be spent in processing the 20 to 30 million already here, with an imminent danger of millions of others wanting to reach this land before AMNESTY is signed into law. Those readers who are unsure, should read the implications after the 1986 Immigration Control & Reform bill was signed by Ronald Reagan.

It was a absolute travesty as all the promises were never kept. Employers knowingly hiring foreign nationals were never penalized with harsh fines or imprisonment. Instead of 3 million being legitimized the number was way beyond 6 million. The cost of processing was staggering. President Obama is giving a pep-talk this Thursday, but it is the open border, free trade and special interest lobbyists that are passing along the rhetoric and lies. His token military force on the border will not have the ability to halt the unfettered flow of illegal drugs, foreign nationals or even Middle Eastern terrorists. The Tea Party and thousands of pro-sovereignty organization and advocates have already proclaimed there will be no--AMNESTY. Until the--REAL--double parallel fences are duly completed, nothing will pass that even smells of AMNESTY. Learn the whole truth at NumbersUSA. Additionally discover who your enemies are in both political parties beginning with Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Take a look at the headlines in today's media: "Recession hit half of U.S. workforce" (The Washington Post); "Time's up for 1.2 million unemployed" (CNN), the latter about Congress' failure to extend unemployment insurance. Just when are Obama and those pushing for amnesty going to get it through their heads that the priority should be the 15 million plus AMERICANS who are out of work and the millions more who are working only part-time or temporary jobs because they can't get permanent ones. One of these stories notes that there are jobs for only 1 out of 5 of those unemployed, yet Obama thinks it's important to discuss AMNESTY?!!!
Amnesty for 5-7 million illegal aliens who are doing jobs that Americans should be doing. And amnesty for the families of these illegal aliens who are using services that U.S. taxpayers are paying for. That's just plain INSULTING. What Obama should do is announce that there will be NO AMNESTY and that eVerify should be made mandatory to remove illegal aliens from jobs. THAT's the kind of "immigration reform" Americans would like to see.

We already have told Obama and all the politicians in Washington, DC, we do not support amnesty for illegal aliens. Do they have ears to listen? They have ears but they choose not to listen to Americans. That is a shame, shame, shame. Americans sent Obama to the White House. But Obama does not do what we want. Obama just listens to illegal aliens and theirs advocacy groups. Americans do not accept that. That is why I along with my friends and family will not vote for Obama in 2012. And this November we will remove from office all the Democrats.

Interesting, isn't it, that Barry Hussein is going to meet with "Hispanic" members of Congress...are "Hispanics" the only ethnic/racial group that routinely violates our immigration and labor laws? Furthermore, I thought members of Congress represented the interests of US citizens within their districts...why are they Carrying Water for foreign nationals who are here ILLEGALLY? I guess if you're a white person or African-American who happens to live in one of these districts asking your congressman for Equal Protection Under the Law is a waste of your breath!

25% more Americans approve of Arizona's tough new immigration law than approve of Obama's health care reform law.

TEA Party Movement, Gulf oil spill, endless wars, 10% unemployment.

If Obama adds "amnesty for illegal aliens" to this list, the Democrats will be crushed in 2010 and 2012 elections.

There is a pipeline along our southern border that is spewing illegal immigrants into the US causing economic and environmental devastation.

There is a pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico that is spewing oil onto US shores causing economic and environmental devastation.

Obama's responce to both has been pathetic

We are in the shape we are in now with this issue because no president would enforce our immigration laws and nothing the american citizens did could budge them on this issue. First they must secure our borders and then move to deport all these criminals we have running around. Did you know they have over a hundred thousand that have been ordered deported that are still here. the reason we are having problems with our schools now is we have been flooded with non english speaking students.Amnesty is not the answer neither is a path to citizenship I am all in favor of legal immigration but what we've had is an invasion.

Major policy speech but no major announcement. That is all he has done since elected. No managerial skills, evidently same as Bush continuing killing and being killed, what is the difference? Nothing done about jobs, foreclosures, help for Americans nil, money for foreign countries yes, favor and no real condemnation of Israels starvation plan for elected Hamas in Gaza, easy on Russian spies, he has been a floor flusher ego-rhetoric since day one.

Comprehensive Immiogration Reform is a euphemism for, Amnesty! The Obama administration is guilty of malfeasance by failing to enforce our current immigration laws, they have stopped construction on the physical barrier on the border, refused funding for the vitual fence, stopped worksite raids, opposed the biometric ID card, and threathened to sue Arizona over their immigration enforcement efforts. What arrogance! Arizona should countersue the administration for malfeasance if the Justice department goes through with this threat!

Immigration reform is a critical issue that Obama must address in his first term. If our politicians can resist acting like children and instead debate the issues on their merits...alright, I am starting to laugh at the idea of our politicians behaving like adults. Never mind, I am sure that the legislation will be full of pandering and ultimately passed so that the Democrats can claim a legislative victory and the Republicans have something to complain about. DC rocks!

A real "comprehensive" solution is to enforce current immigration law already on the books. The only reason that the current system is "broken" is that successive administrations have refused to enforce the law.

Obama's "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" is to give amnesty to lawbreaking criminals.

It's time for the Open Border lobby to stop the lying, and to start enforcing the law.

Posted by: ARealRealist | June 29, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

I am glad the President is speaking out on the need for reform. It is not enough for the Republicans to only say "fix the border" or for the Democrats to just speak out, though.

Both must work together for a comprehensive solution that gives those here without status a path to legality, secures the border, stops bad employers from dragging wages down, and stops the immoral destruction of immigrant families.

Grown ups put aside their differences, stop their name-calling, and actually work.

The "hispanic" caucus, as well as others seek to represent "their kind" at the cost of the rest of America.
This is racist.
