Obama talking up stimulus -- again

By Scott Wilson
President Obama traveled to swing state Ohio Friday to showcase the stimulus measure he pushed through Congress 16 months ago -- a sign the administration is fretting over enduring criticism that the $787 billion package has failed to generate enough jobs.

Obama presided over the inauguration of a highway construction project in Columbus. The administration says it is the 10,000th road project to begin with stimulus money, one of many milestones it intends to mark throughout the summer and heading into the fall mid-term election season.

Speaking to an outdoor audience that included a few construction workers in hard hats, Obama said when he was last in Ohio "America was losing 700,000 jobs per month, our economy was shrinking, plants and businesses right here in Ohio were closing."

"We knew that if we failed to act, then things were only going to get much worse," Obama said.

While the economy is growing again, private-sector job creation is meager, judging by recent employment reports. And Obama told the crowd that he is "under no illusion that we're where we need to be yet."

"I know that a lot of families and communities have yet to feel the effects of the recovery in their own lives," he said. "There are still too many people here in Ohio and across the country who can't find work. Many more can't make ends meet."

The quick trip underscores the administration's concern over the political implications of the stimulus measure, a mix of public-works spending, tax breaks, and aid to state and local governments passed in the depths of the recession.

On Thursday, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs brought Vice President Biden into the White House briefing room to tell reporters, in no uncertain terms, that the stimulus spending has worked to revive the economy.

But despite the estimated 2.5 million jobs the measure has either created or saved, according to administration figures challenged by many economists, the national unemployment rate still hovers just below the 10 percent mark.

That is higher than when Obama took office, and shows little sign of coming down significantly anytime before the November elections.

The administration has been working with the Senate on a compromise bill of unemployment benefit extensions and additional aid to states. But so far it has failed to muster the votes to be brought to the floor.

Even though he spoke at an excavation site where the highway will run, Obama warned that "repairing our existing infrastructure is not enough" to remake the economy.

He promoted clean energy, broadband Internet, and other investments to encourage new areas of economic growth - "not the infrastructure that we inherited from our parents and our grandparents."

"The truth is, if we want to keep on adding jobs, if we want to keep on raising incomes, if we want to keep growing both our economy and our middle class, if we want to ensure that Americans can compete with any nation in the world, we're going to have to get serious about our long-term vision for this country," he said.

All Obama does is campaign. I think this fact should earn him the title of Propagandist-In-Chief.

While I agree to all of the criticism against President Obama, there is one area that appears to be completely ignored -- how can jobs be created in the US when there is no longer any consumer manufacturing going on? US industry has all but abrogated its responsibility by sending the bulk of its manufacturing to China -- which makes goods extremely cheap as there is little or no regulation about labor, welfare, safety standards, quality assurances or the myriad ways in which manufacturers in the US were held accountable for malpractices. The millions of Chinese who labor everyday at cut-rate wages producing all the things that make life comfortable here in America are the ones responsible for holding back job creation in the US. There are really no jobs in the manufacturing industry to speak of -- how can there be new jobs!!

Yup here is some stimulus from obama to CT

with Chris Dodd

Here is how corrupt our politicians are this is a stimulus package and for guess who !!!!READ THIS IS FREAKIN UNREAL

With the support of Sen. Chris Dodd, D.-Conn., the federal government has awarded $54 million to Connecticut's politically well-connected Mohegan Indian tribe, which operates one of the highest grossing casinos in the U.S.

The tribe runs the sprawling Mohegan Sun casino, halfway between New York City and Boston, which earned more than $1.3 billion in gross revenues in 2009. Each tribe member receives a cut of the profits, a number a tribal official said was "less than $30,000" per capita per year. The stimulus money is a loan from a U.S. Department of Agriculture rural development program that is meant to help communities of less than 20,000 people that have been "unable to obtain other credit at reasonable rates and terms and are unable to finance the proposed project from their own resources."

THIS IS OUR SENATORS PEOPLE CROOKS THAT NEED TO BE VOTED OUT ALL OF THEM

We need a proposition on the next ballot to vote on government travel limits with tax payer money. Obama's going way overboard. Technology has made it possible for him to get his messages across where ever he wants without blowing so much money while so many people are suffering without. Of course there would be no crowds of illegal immigrants cheering on their new leader, while the USA does without one to represent them.

The President continued that the long term vision including increased taxes on ALL Americans, socializing every major industry, including instituting an open border program with Mexico and Canada. He also stressed the importance of developing a national housing, clothing and meals program so all americans will every basic necessity provided to them courtesy of the US government. He just HATES to stay home. Why can't he sit there and run our business for us? Why MUST he spend 100,000 dollars an hour riding that plane all over the place? The helos, the other planes, the rest of it. This guy is the worst traveling glutton since Bill Clinton. It would be cheaper for Obama and his Buffarillo wife to simply sit home and throw parties for the small people. It's reprehensible, all of it. Greedy cows.

One thing which hasn't been addressed is that Pres. Obama recognized the 10,000th GOVERNMENT project, stimulated with tax dollars taken from individuals and businesses who are cutting their spending to stay afloat. Nice thing about government: no responsibility for anything.

The other factor which should take taxpayers aback: he's funding "our parents' and grandparents' infrastructure." Wasn't candidate Obama complaining that our "roads and bridges are falling apart?" How quickly he forgets. I guess roads and bridges aren't legacy enough for him.

The Present Dunce is the WORST in U.S.History and, considering Jeemee Kadah, that's saying something.

OTOH, the wife and kids have been 'OK' but, that's still not enough to make me want him back.

Considering the other story in WAPO today that North Korea was legitimizing private markets and that was "bowing to reality".....just WHAT has the WAPO writer been smoking regarding his evaluation of 'reality' vs North Korea's ability to appreciate just what that is?

How about NK bowing to DEFEAT as a 'reality'? How about NK de-mining itself and bulldozing the border for another dose of 'reality'? How about NK giving it up and admitting that 'reality' is that they LOST. Really, what's not to like about GETTING RICH, NK?

You know, The phrase—“To get rich is glorious”—is the simplified version of what Chinese Premier Deng Xiaoping told his country a generation ago: “Rang yi bu fen ren xian fu qi lai,” he declared. “Let some people get rich first.”

Cheney and Bush involved this government in criminal activities which got us into and unnecessary and illegal war, allowed corporations to rob our treasury and drove us into a huge hole. Now, the president is actually investing in our country and everyone will benefit. Better education, better environment and better energy. True, we need a smaller government and the bible thumping, gun toting conservatives can resign. That is a win-win for everyone. The small government crowd should help by not being involved in government or blogging about government. Here is an idea, get together in a big circle and do some target practicing, a bible in one hand and a gun in the other, gnashing and grinding your teeth.

If a politician has to repeatedly tell voters that his stimulus plan is working, that his healthcare reform is wonderful, and that he is on top of that mess in the Gulf, then he is doing something terribly wrong.

Maybe the President should hire Garrett Morris to stand next to him and shout out his accomplishments to the "hard-of-hearing" public. At least it would be entertaining.

The only jobs Obama intended to create were union jobs, whether government, police and fire, teachers and public road construction crews. All of these professions are marked by artificially high income and benefits, and by the fact that the vast majority of the money that pays for this comes out of the pockets of nonunion workers, businesses, investments, etc. Moreover, many of the government jobs are designed to be permanent, irrespective of whether they are truly needed. In effect, the president and his supporters didn't waste the crisis, but rather, used it to massively expand the state and nomenklatura at the expense of our present and future well-being and quality of life. THAT is the change they intended, and they are on track to achieve it.

Finally, the stimulus spending was timed for maximum benefit (and smoke and mirrors) during the upcoming election cycle. Hence, the prez et al. could go on the road trumpeting all of the jobs being created by his vision and magnaminity, with the compliant mainstream media echoing the sentiment (read: talking points), fooling voters into thinking that something real is happening. In point of fact, it's just more union jobs being created to feed union coffers so they can turn around and spend our tax dollars to help sustain the liberal/left-wing status quo in Congress. If I were British, I would say, "Brilliant." But I'm American, so I am saying, "Wake up, people!"

At last honesty in the WHite House and

In comparison to Bush, Obama looks like a saint. I don't forsee any speaking tours for Dubya. I wonder why? No- I don't.
After eights years of bad english and
bad articulation the "decider" has

McCain definitly kept his distance
from Dubya during 2008, and I can't blame him. I would not let Dubya into my home. Hell even Bill Clinton whose morals noone questions is very publicly visible. Carter's opinions are highly valued, esteemed and quoted, His integrity
unquestioned worldwide. There seems to be a pattern established here that noone writes about.
Can Dubya even step out of the u.S.
without being grabbed up by an international war tribunal?
I don't see how all of you morons can rant about the Pres. when the present is infinitly preferrable to the immediate past.

The best argument that someone has come up with to justify all this spending could be boiled down to this:

"Something had to be done!"

Well, yes. Despite the protestations of a few "experts" who claim this saved jobs, let's go with that thought.

$1T saved 1M jobs. Great. Divide $1T by $1M and tell me if there was a more cost effective way to create jobs.

Heck, go crazy and divide it by 2.5M jobs. Then tell me if it was worth it.

Then ask yourself what this $1T represented politically. Then ask yourself why. They do some digging and determine where most of the jobs went to.

If the intent was to create jobs, then this didn't do it. At least not in any kind of cost effective way.

If the intent was to spark industry, then this didn't do it. At least not in any kind of cost effective way.

A very open minded person would say that if it costs that much money to save one job, the job wasn't worth saving. A very open minded person would ask "did we get $1T worth of assets or tax receipts to counter the spending?

If you were slightly cynical, you might claim this stimulus money was geared at politically favored groups, pet projects of politicians. Effectively an attempt to win votes.

But in no case could you claim with any credibility the economy was stimulated or helped by the amount spent.

If you wanted to stimulate spending, you'd forgive income tax for every citizen for one year.

If you wanted to stimulate jobs, you'd forgive any business taxes for one year.

If you wanted to stimulate green power generation, you'd give everybody a tax credit up to $50,000K to put solar or wind power in their house.

It didn't do anything. We just wasted $1T. And Obama can't blame it on Bush (although I feel certain when he's fighting for his political life in 2 years, everything will be Bush's fault).

FRAUD!

Sorry, the government does not create wealth, or on balance, jobs.

The best that it can do is to protect the individual rights of its citizens, and it does not even do that very well.

So-called "stimulus" packages simply divert money from profitable uses to publicly visible ones (like highway construction and unprofitable energy technologies) that politicians can point to easily and fraudulently claim credit for.

Of course such politicians don't say anything about the *more economically efficient and profitable* jobs that *won't* be created because funds have been diverted to these pet projects.

Nobody has to hope that Barry (Soetoro, aka Obama) will fail. Get your head out of where your hero is likely to kick you, and get off the drugs, and buy, steel, or borrow a couple of IQ points (don't get one - the poor thing will die of lonliness), and maybe, just maybe, you'll realise, just like those people out there with functionind brains , that "cSpan" has already failed. Just think on the bright side though. If you decide to count your IQ, you won't even have to remove your shoes. Just use one hand to point, and the other to keep score. You even have a few spare fingers.

I realize it's a lot of fun on a site like this to make outlandish charges and generally pontificate. But I'd like to think the folks who challenge every single thing our President has done would look at more fact-based assessments every once and a while.

As the White House has acknowledged, it's hard to precisely quantify jobs created by stimulus spending. And as with any administration, they are likely to end up with a relatively positive estimate.

But a number of independent economists and professional analysts have looked at this, and according to 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner PolitiFact.com:

". . the independent economists who have produced studies agree that the stimulus has saved or created upwards of 1 million jobs."

Here are 2 citations to non-partisan fact check sites that looked at this complex issue in detail:

The Republicans want President Obama to fail. Several of the less crafty among them said as much early in his presidency. So the GOP is rooting for recession, and Republicans don't give a bush how many jobs that recession costs, how many families suffer, how many more go hungry.
This is your GOP.

If you truly want to know what is going on; Then you will have to accept these things as the TRUTH. Once you understand the following things; All things will be understood. So I tell you Obama is the Anti-Christ, Satan on Earth, Lawless One, or what ever else you want to call this Demonic Figure. His words describe him, He is a False Hope, If you listen to him you will love him. He carries a Bow without an Arrow. He will conquer all through his speech, his false hoods will capture all who sit and listen to him.
2 Thessalonians 2:11-12
11And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Given the number of posts on this stream that give no other information than that they really, really, don't like Obama, I hesitate to post here, but...

The economy was in free-fall and the banking system at risk of collapse when Obama took office. It's unfair and unreasonable to think that the country could spend a decade borrowing money to pay for grossly unaffordable and overpriced real estate and then shake it off in a year. Blaming Obama for the current recession is like blaming him for the existence of Al Qaeda, though perhaps some of the other posters here do that too!

It's ridiculous to argue that the stimulus bill did not create/save jobs. It's virtually impossible to spend billions of dollars paying people to do things (anything, really) and not create jobs. How many more hundreds of thousands of teachers, nurses, construction workers, etc., would be out of the job now without the stimulus? How many more millions would be unemployed when those government workers stopped buying building supplies and other equipment for work, as well as clothes, cars, etc., with the paychecks they get from the stimulus?

It's almost certain that the unemployment would have been much worse without the stimulus. And it's wrong that the Democrats don't get more credit for the Great Depression II that they helped the US--so far--avoid.

"But despite the estimated 2.5 million jobs the measure has either created or saved, according to administration figures challenged by many economists, the national unemployment rate still hovers just below the 10 percent mark."
_________________________
Anybody edit this stuff before it gets published?? Ever heard of a "run-on" sentence. How about this instead:

Despite Obama's questionable assertion that 2.5 million jobs were created or saved, the national unemployment rate remains just below 10%.
**
You could also point out that the concept of "saved jobs" is nothing but administration spin, since their is no way to measure "saved jobs".

The economy was losing 500,000 jobs per month in 2008.
U.S. GDP grew in each of the last 3 quarters, jobs are always lagging the numbers recovery in each recession. Those thinking about long-term recovery, know the enviroment will be a big winner in the conversion to biofuels & biopower.

Clearly, one reality is that the President does have to do the best he can to project the idea that he is making some progress on unemployment. The second reality is that nobody believes that very much progress is actually being made and few believe that there is any chance for anything more than slow progress. The third reality is that we went through similar circumstances in 2003 and in the end the Bush/Greenspan policies surprised by their eventual success in igniting a recovery in employment. The fourth reality is that the Bush/Greenspan success set the stage for the worst economic disaster the United States has experienced in two generations. The fire they ignited consumed the globe's capital. The retardant needed to stop the blaze almost destroyed the world's banking system. But, hey, it is feeling a little cold now. Maybe a little of that gasoline can ignite something to make us feel a little warmer.

______________________
If memory serves me correctly, the unemployment rate was between 5% and 6% when Obama was elected, despite his and Hillary Clinton's talking the economy down and creating a mood of fear and uncertainty during most of 2008.

Regarding Obama speech today, while the President faces the most severe crisis of his Presidency, all he can think to do is campaign. I wonder if the workers who were told they couldn't work today due to Obama's visit appreciated his efforts?

Does anyone mind if I inject some FACTS into this story?

LEADING DEMS ATTACKED BUSH WHEN MILLIONS OF JOBS WERE BEING CREATED …
In 2003, Over 87,000 Jobs Were Created. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics,

In 2004, Over 2 Million Jobs Were Created. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

In 2005, Over 2.5 Million Jobs Were Created. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov,

In 2006, Over 2.1 Million Jobs Were Created. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, Accessed 1/6/10)

By 2007, 5.7 Million Jobs Had Been Created Under Bush. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, Accessed 1/6/10)

....... In January 2007 the Democrats took over Congress and the ECONOMY.......

The Legislative Branch runs the economy with their spending bills, not the Executive Branch....

Maybe we need to stop teaching "Saving the Planet 101" and start teaching "US Government 101"

Anyone who thinks Obama averted a second Great Depression, especially with the "stimulus" bill needs to look up the definitions of a recession and depression. Saving or creating a couple million jobs when over fifteen million are unemployed, hardly constitutes preventing another depression.

Economics may be the dismal science, as practiced by most highly dogmatic economists, but a little basic economics is useful in understanding the economy. Please a little more independent thinking, less unquestioning acceptance of propaganda from politicians in Democratic and Republican parties.

Since the "stimulus" bill (more commonly called the "farm" bill - it's all pork), 2.6 million private secter jobs have been lost. But over 400,000 government "jobs" (a joke - see the grinning idiot does have a sense of humour). As it takes 4 - 5 actual, tax paying 'workers' ( a dirty word to Democrats) to pay for one public "servant" (oh, it just cracks me up), Barry will hope all those dope dealers and criminals he is encoraging to cross over from Mexico have learned from his mentor (Al Kapone) and pay their taxes.

Which reminds me. If the idiot could learn to flap his ears, he wouldn't need Air Force One anymore. That alone would save a couple of billion dollars in costs. Of course, there still would be the problem of transporting those essential items he needs with him to function - his golf clubs.

===========================================

This quotation came from the Czech Republic . Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do here.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

If our Great Divider-in-Chief were smart.........lol........he shouldn't bring up:

1. The Stimulus - which has been a bust

2. Health care reform - which was a bribe-ridden, buget busting, partisan bill

These might be popular with some folks..........they are not popular with the majority of folks.....

Obama needs to be reminded by the American people that federal stimulus spending did little good for the U.S. economy and more damage by an increase in national debt. Obama does not seem to learn from his mistakes. He promotes more in the red spending at the taxpayer’s expense. Read the news on the results. The number of Americans filing jobless claims went up and “lay offs” from jobs continue at a high rate.

Obama needs compare his uncontrolled “spending” of federal tax dollars to the continuing BP sludge “oil spill” in the Gulf Coast. Obama spends U.S. taxpayer’s money that flows from Congressional bills to federal government to state government to local governments the trickles down to employee salaries of government contractors. BP oil gushes with force from the oil reserve beneath the ocean floor and flows up the broken BP pipe to the broken containment device into the ocean 5,000 feet below the surface.

What U.S. federal spending and BP oil spill have in common is no one can stop either and both are disasters. One perpetuates disaster on the U.S. economy and the other perpetuates disaster on the environment. What they do not have in common is that federal spending is from a deficit account (bankrupt) while the oil gusher has a huge reservoir.

Hmm....where are the jobs??

BUSH SUPPORTS SHIFT OF JOBS OVERSEAS
February 10, 2004

The loss of work to other countries, while painful in the short term, will enrich the economy eventually, his report to Congress says.
WASHINGTON — The movement of American factory jobs and white-collar work to other countries is part of a positive transformation that will enrich the U.S. economy over time, even if it causes short-term pain and dislocation, the Bush administration said Monday.

The embrace of foreign outsourcing, an accelerating trend that has contributed to U.S. job losses in recent years and has become an issue in the 2004 elections, is contained in the president's annual report to Congress on the health of the economy.

I am looking forward to November when the millions (and growing) of Tea Party supporters show Obama and his progressive followers in Congress what we truly think of his program to bankrupt America.

Just a look at the bottom line job number that the Adminstration's own Bureau of Labor Statistics has published, on the number of persons employed in the civilian workforce.

May 2009: 140.4 million
May 2010: 139.5 million

In other words, after spending all that money in a rushed-through process with little thought behind it, we are still down nearly 1 million private sector jobs.

From Ohio:
At least he visits voters after the election, not mainly donors like the last Pres. I agree that the economy was in a sharp downward trend and now it is close to even likely due largely to government spending. The cerain losses from a deeper recession are worse than the deficit, neither are good.

Obama is like Bush II in so many ways. Highly arrogant, unduly sensitive to any criticism, reluctant to acknowledge mistakes in policies, seeking the facade of bipartisanship, while essentially demanding acceptance of his ideas.

Obviously the seven hundred billion stimulus did not create or save enough jobs and administration figures are probably significantly inflated. The fact is the stimulus bill was less a jobs creation bill than a huge spending spree by Democrats, that could not help but somewhat stimulate the economy with massive budget deficits.
