Obama's Father's Day proclamation, with a nod to the nontraditional

By Alec MacGillis
Presidential proclamations for Hallmark holidays are generally not newsmaking occasions, but President Obama seemed intent on breaking some new ground with his statement marking Father's Day. After some of the expected ruminations on the responsibilities and joys of fatherhood, Obama's 2010 proclamation notes: "Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by a father and mother, a single father, two fathers, a step father, a grandfather, or caring guardian."

As best we can tell, this is the first time that "two fathers" made it into the annual Father's Day litany. George W. Bush's final proclamation in 2008 noted the "extraordinary effort of the nation's fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and guardians." And the furthest Obama's proclamation last year went in giving a nod to nontraditional fathering was to "honor those surrogate fathers who raise, mentor, or care for someone else's child."

It's also worth noting that the line that immediately follows this year's "two fathers" line is a word of praise for the military: "We owe a special debt of gratitude for those parents serving in the United States Armed Forces and their families, whose sacrifices protect the lives and liberties of all American children." Any one of "two fathers" have been unable to serve in the armed forces, at least not while being open about his home situation. But the military is in the process of doing away with "don't ask, don't tell" -- and the president, in turn, is likewise bringing a small revolution to the tradition of obligatory holiday declarations.

What a sick joke having Obama promoting responsible fatherhood? Remember the NY Sun reported that Obama’s campaign has admitted Obama voted against giving medical care to babies born alive after an abortion attempt, a fact that the campaign originally dismissed as a “smear.” The reality behind the Obama rhetoric is that he “worked against efforts” to ban the gruesome practice of leaving babies who survived failed abortions to die.

With fodder coming from the mouths of Joe Barton and other anti-regulation pro-business republicans they have no chance to regain power. They certainly won't be able to find a candidate who can successfully go up against President Obama. Who ya got repubs? Sarah? Newt? Huck? Mitt? None have a chance.

Why did Obama have to mention "two fathers" for the homosexual men, but didn't do the same for the Mothers.

What exactly is he trying to imply?

First of all, everyone should chill-out. It really does not matter what a presidential message says or does not say. This is another case of focusing on the trivial. No one in the country is prevented from practicing their traditions. Yes, some public displays are limited, like the manger scenes on public property. Christians are free to display those scenes on private property and church grounds.
Lastly, stop all this rhetoric about how the country was founded by Christians. This country was "founded" by native Americans before Europeans arrived, and Europeans, although mostly Christian, came here to escape POLITICAL TYRANNY. And they founded the constitutional form of government. For that, they should be credited. But Christian Americans do not have a constitutional right to dominate the country with their values. We are multi-cultural, and multi-religious. Compromises in cultural and religious values comes with the territory. Get used to it.

Pandering to his base. Nothing more, nothing less.

htruman1, I'll try to make it simple for you. Americans are sick and tired of their traditions and their values being maligned and trampled on. They're sick and tired of people like you trying to change everything from Christmas to Father's Day to Easter. This country was founded by Christians, htruman1, and we're not backing down. You can rant on this site all you want and you can call people every name you can think of but it won't do any good. We have no use for people like you! This is going to stop!

georges2 -- Let me make it easy for you in return. You see, there are roughly 310 million people in America and you are but one of them. I think it show cases your extreme arrogance and ignorance when you try to project your individual limitations, ahem, I mean values on the rest of the populace.

Btw, you missed my whole point about Christianity, which was by no means to demean it, but to call out all the phony baloney fake Christians who come on these threads and who listen to hate radio everyday, and who devalue education and then btch and moan about how others took what should be rightfully theirs (we're talking the American dream George, you might want to take note).

Bottom line George, people like you give Christianity the bad name. My closing message to you is that bibles are for reading NOT thumping. You ought to try this advice sometime:-)

More pandering by the talker-in-chief. This is so people won't notice how he backed away from "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" reversal.
He thinks people are really not very bright.

All the president did was acknowledge that a gay person can be a good father, too. In 10 years there will be absolutely no controversy about this, and America will be stronger for it.

Moe pandering to perverts. Nothing else. Next..?
Probably child molesters.

As a 24 year old lesbian who plans on having children with my partner of 6 years, this was such a great moment for our country. The thing is, whether people like it or not, gay people are in this country, and they have families. Either we can talk about it and try to understand, or we can be totally hush hush about the matter. But no matter what, it is still happening and it is going to keep happening. If you have questions, ask, but please do not judge because you don't know or understand. And for those of you who keep bringing religion into this matter, I appreciate how worried you seem for the GLBT community, but please just worry about yourself. Thank you!

I support everything you say.

Except many of the Founding Fathers were Deists.

As for the people you are talking about, I say RUN THEM OUT OF TOWN.

Obama probably has mixed feelings on this Father's Day.

For one, his father left him at a very young age.

Obama was raised by a step-father in Indonesia - the one who adopted him and probably gave Obama Indonesian citizenship - and gave up Obama's US citizenship.

Obama I suppose has been a good father - however one has to QUESTION HOW GOOD A FATHER BRINGS HIS CHILDREN TO LISTEN TO REV. WRIGHT.

Obama brought his children to Rev. Wright week after week - for years - to listen to a MESSAGE OF HATRED.

This is no different from bringing children to KKK rallies.

Yes - the country should take full note of Obama's character: What he did with his children IS THE SAME AS BRINGING CHIDREN TO KKK RALLIES TO LISTEN TO MESSAGES OF HATE.

Happy Father's Day.

Well Lord, it's me again, Obeah. I'm glad you've taken time out of your schedule to talk to me today. Lord, why do you let people speak for you? Did you grant wisdom to the above poster? Is that why he represents your views here in a public forum? Did you speak to him in English, or in Latin, the language in which you wrote the bible (or had the apostles do it) and a language which you knew, with your omnipotent wisdom, would one day be dead and unspoken except by scholars? Did you mean to make your holy world available to just the few? Or are the rantings of the above poster a sign that your coming is imminent? Either way, I'm going to go and BBQ with my family on Father's Day. World might end tomorrow, or it might not, but I know one thing: idiots who claim to speak for God are idiots. I don't claim to speak for you, Lord. But I do wonder why you don't just drop some hellfire and brimstone to make clear where we all stand. Oh wait, I guess I must not have been granted wisdom or I wouldn't need to ask. Thanks Lord, I'm glad we had this chat.

Barack Obama's statement that children can be raised by "two fathers" practically states that he fully supports gay marriage.

Wow! Imagine that.. he acknowledged that people who come from a different persuasion than the mythical "traditional American family" espoused by all the fat boys on hate radio may actually be well intentioned people and loving family heads.

That proves that Barack H. Obama is a total hater! Yeah! Because JC would have never empathized with or shown magnanimity to the outcasts of his era... NO!!! err, ummm, you know, except for all the references in the new testament where he did just that:-)

But fake Christians (such as the numerous ones posting on this thread) don't pay any credence to the new testament. NO!!! It's all about the old testament for this distinguished branch of the American Taliban. Yeah!!! Hatred, eternal suffering, wahooo, I bet JC can't wait to spend an eternity with these goons:-)

Good to see the American Taliban out in full force today, spewing their fake Christian values of hate and "the virtue of selfishness" as usual.

Obama probably is a good father, but the fact that he brought his daughters week after week to listen to Rev Wright spew hatred about white people puts his judgement into question. Concerning his "two fathers" statement, those are the words of a politician pandering to the gays in an election year.

Yes We Can.
Vote the Democrats out in 2010.
Vote Obama out in 2012.

WE'LL REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!

I'll take any kind of praise I can get from a Feminist.

No repeat of his last Father's Day speech where he talked down to father's about being dead beats it seems...I guess he didn't want to risk upsetting his gay constituency.

Is there anyway that the leftists can issue a Father's Day Proclamation without PUSHING THE GAY THEMES ON AMERICA ????

Come on - let's be serious.

This is like the ABC Show Brothers and Sisters - the only good marriage is the gay marriage.

Time for the gays to just STOP PUSHING THEIR AGENDA ON EVERYONE ELSE.

AND CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE TAUGHT ANYTHING ABOUT THE GAY AGENDA - the GAY AGENDA SHOULD STAY OUT OF THE SCHOOLS.

This stuff has to stop.

The leftists are way out of line on this issue.

I am a father who contacted him concerning my son being denied an equal education in Delaware public schools. He was segregated out of classes and the restrooms for reporting daily violence against himself and other white students but no one in the state or federal government wants to help us because we are white. Letter from white house said he doesnt' get involved in state issues but I remember him opening his mouth for his buddy who had the incident with campus police.

All this ar$shole can do is pander to perverts and appease our enemies.
Nothing positive in the way of accomplishments, and he has an administration composed largely of inept , intellectual clowns, just like himself.
Can't wait for November to start shoveling the democrat feces out of Congress, and later the White House.
What embarrassing failures these leftist morons are.

In contrast to many right-wing critcs (Limbaugh, Gingrich, etc.), Obama is a real role-model as a father and family man. I hope he can have a positive impact on our culture, where fatherhood has increasingly come under attack.

The ObamaNation marches on. Obama has a real hatred of all things traditional American and it sticks out like a sore thumb. The man is a sure-fire one-termer. The mid-terms in November should be the beginning of the end for this "progressive" humbug.

He has done more to harm the "Democrat brand" than Clinton ever dreamed of. Carter too.
