Obama's Muslim outreach faltering

By Scott Wilson
It's been a year since President Obama addressed the Islamic world in Cairo, his most visible gesture to a people, culture and religion he believes the Bush administration antagonized unnecessarily.

But, according to a new poll, the Muslim world has not exactly grasped his extended hand. In fact, Muslims have lost confidence in Obama over the past year, the poll found.

And in Egypt, the Arab bellwether nation where Obama chose to deliver his speech, the U.S. standing today is worse than during the final year of the Bush administration.

Among Muslim publics "the modest levels of confidence and approval observed in 2009 have slipped markedly," write the authors of the 22-nation Pew Global Attitudes Survey released Thursday morning.

The poll, conducted in April and early May, found that public opinion of the United States rose in three of the seven predominantly Muslim nations surveyed.

But in two of those ---Turkey and Pakistan -- the rise remained within the margin of error and edged up from the lowest levels found in any of the 22 countries surveyed.

The poll reports that 17 percent of Turks have a favorable view of the United States, up from 14 percent last year. In Pakistan, the rating rose from 16 to 17 percent. (Nigeria grew slightly more adoring of the United States with 81 percent expressing a positive view.)

U.S. favorability ratings fell in Lebanon, Jordan, and even Indonesia -- a place where Obama lived as a child, but has now twice postponed a scheduled visit. In Egypt, only 17 percent of the public approve of the United States, a 10-percentage point drop from last year and five points below the 2008 mark.

Muslim feelings toward Obama personally also have dropped sharply. Those expressing confidence in Obama dropped 10-percentage points in Turkey, Egypt, and Lebanon. Single-digit drops were reported in Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Nigeria.

"With regard to Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran, the polling found as many countries approving as disapproving of his handling of these issues," the authors write. "However, the American president gets his worst ratings for dealing with another world problem for which the U.S. is often criticized: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

In only three of the 22 nations surveyed (including the United States) did a majority approve of how Obama has handled the issue -- the nations of France, Nigeria and Kenya.

And that was before the Gaza flotilla crisis.

The approval for the building of twin tower mosque at ground zero was not done by OBAMA but probably by the new york mayor.
l am not an American nethier am l living in America but the info is that he has nothing to do with that issue and as a christain l feel very angry that new york authorities should approve such an insulting scheme

it is a pity that while filing this piece, and doing your poling, you erroronously had to include NIGERIA which is not to be characterized with muslim nations. l repeat , Nigeria is never a muslim nation but a country that has a high proportin of christains and the most populated black nation has 100% confidence in OBAMA and always alligns with AMERICAN INTEREST , never mind the xmas bomber incidence

Posted by: damsoks | June 24, 2010 5:13 AM | Report abuse

Well... and what should Obama do not to lose muslims confidence?

Have you heard about building twin mosques AT GROUND ZERO?? That means where World Trade Center was destroyed buy Al Qaeda fighters at 9/11? Is sounds like a joke, but it isn't more info is at http://5andr0.blogspot.com/2010/06/thousands-upon-thousands-protest-911.html and http://sioaonline.com/?p=386

If muslim confidence means even more then mosques at Ground Zero, do we really need such confidence?

It is not a matter of religion if you agree or not agree with Obama. Obama has tried to change the image of America by addressing the Islamic world in a different way from the previous presidents. He tried to play with the emotions of the muslim world. Emotionally, the Arab and the muslim world were in fact happier to have an American president with an islamic background. The problems of the muslim world will be solved just because a president whose father was muslim has been elected for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world. The foundation of Israel in 1948 has created a great wound in the Islamic world and it wont be treated. The statistics of whether the people are satisfied with a president or not are much much better than the reality. In fact, people in the rest of the world not only in countries with islamic majority are not happy with the external policy of the U.S.A

Whether Muslims see President Obama as good or bad depends on the degree to which they believe in Democracy. Those with fundamentalist beliefs will see the President and Democracy as immoral. Sinners (in their eyes are not beaten or killed on the spot. Those who appreciate freedom will understand that President Obama was not elected to reinstate an Islamic Empire on earth run by Mullahs and Ayatollahs.

Experts who study the Muslim world tried to tell the U.S. and Obama that the one thing they respect is power. When the powerful bow and scrape before Arabic rulers as Obama did, the powerful appear weak. And that's what Obama's vast inexperience has brought to the U.S. -- an appearance of weakness and indecision. Yes, Bush was heavy-handed at times, but the U.S. was respected, maybe feared a bit too. Hopefully, we can find a leader in the middle of those two extremes, you know, "walk softly but carry a big stick." Another failure for Obama.

Muslims are not happy with Obama?

Join the crowd neither is anybody else except for the extreme progressives.

And jewish bankers on Wall Street. Obama is fattening their wallets.
And unions.
And Harvard Law grads. Obama is still giving them plum jobs, even those they are not remotely qualified for other than having Harvard Elite stamped on their resumes.
And government employee unions.
Hollywood still loves him.
As do gays.
And blacks by slavish numbers, still back their Messiah. Obama approval under black tribalism is 93-95% in polls.

Oh no, it can't be! Obama's muslim brothers are forsaking him? They obviously know an empty suit when they see one.

"Muslim world has not exactly grasped his [BH O'Carter's] extended hand." The voters were not enthralled with Acnmadinijad padding the ballot box in Iran, either. muslims can discrimiate against other muslims as well as they differ with Christians.

"Countries are thumbing their noses at the U.S." as compared to the days when they all bowed down and did whatever we dictated them to do?
Obama reached out to the Muslim world to let them know that we were willing to talk and "do business" with them over common interests. That put them in a corner. After all their talk about how we just wouldn't do anything at all ever to help them, they suddenly were faced with a President who actually wanted to listen and cooperate in a spirit of attaining mutual goals and interests.
They refuse this as they constantly refuse to negotiate in good faith with anyone anywhere. How many Arab leaders have been willing to negotiate in good faith with the West? Anwar Sadat (murdered for his efforts) and who else?
Obama has called them out and taken away their excuse for not cooperating, or talking, or negotiating. This is good because it will clarify for the American people the decisions, military and otherwise, that our President (now or in the future) will be required to make.

Oh really? Seems Muslims like him just fine since he has gone all over the world apologizing for the US for everything. He bows to their leaders. He refuses to call our enemies what they are "radical muslims". Why they should love him since he insults our allies. He has time to visit with dictators but not time to visit with BP about this spill until 2 months passed. Why Muslims adore him. They voted for him. And even if our President is busy ignoring the crisis on the southern border and the one in the gulf and the fact that it was radical muslims that attacked us on 9-11, I can identify our enemies but with what we have in the WH, it is getting fuzzier every day and scary.

Long time ago, I got very, very tired of the AEWG (Average European White Guy) patiently and apologetically accepting whatever wrongs anyone anywhere on the face of the planet could come up with to blame on him.

AEWGs have been blamed for the oppression of blacks, whites, women, other AEWGs, Inuits, Pomeranian Cats, unknown S. American tribes and of everyone never even thought of when 'blame' was being passed around.

It's heartening now, to find that a AE/AAG (Average European/African American Guy) is getting both barrels of the 'blame game'.

My man, Barack, is now catching hell on all fronts and the Muslim community's dissatisfaction is only the most recent, regardless at his attempts at civility; a trait obviously unfamiliar to the majority of folk, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual preference/gender or national origin.

I really, really wish all these various "communities" would grow up and begin taking responsibility for themselves and stop whining and throwing their little conniption fits, hoping some adult will come in and change their diapers.

As for whether or not the Muslim community approves of the Pres. .........., I could really care less.

Regards,
Duncan OSWG

"If not for the lobby of Israel and their help you will be kneeling to mecca on a garbage can. What a vile idiot you must be."

Vile idiot = Nazi. After thousands of Americans died in WWII to rid the world of them, they're still slithering around, usually masquerading as "critics of Israel". And that's not even counting the Muslims, whose perennial bestseller is Mein Kampf, which they translate as My Jihad.

When is everyone going to realize the Muslims hates any people and any culture that is not theirs or like theirs they are intolerant and incapabale of tolerance and quite honestly do not want to be tolerant. I think it is time to quit caring what they think. Yes I know oil but the Saudi's still want their do re me and do ot want their way of life disrupted, that won't happen w/out us. Look at France and England ruined by the Muslims and they ruin all they touch!

Those who are uncomfortable with Obama:

Muslims
Christians
Conservatives
Tea Party people
Traditional Democrats
Indpendents

Those Who are comfortable with Obama:

Communists
Socialists
Marxists
Far Left Democrats (see three examples above)
Homosexuals
Black Panthers
Domestic Terrorists (See William Ayers)
Environmental Fascists (See Far left Democrats above)

Plainly put, Obama is so far away from mainstream America, it isn't funny.

November 2010 and November 2012 - America reclamed from radical leftist policy.

According to the "Muslim Media Network": A poll done on 11/7/2008 by "The American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights and Elections" showed that American Muslims voted for Obama by 89%, and for McCain by 2%.
Even if "Obama's Muslim outreach is faltering" (as WaPo claims), you can bet that they'll still vote for him by roughly the same percentage in 2012, no matter who the GOP nominee is. While Muslims everywhere all claim that the Osama bin Laden and other terrorist supporters are only a small percentage of Muslims, I believe it's just the opposite. I'm convinced that most Muslims tacidly support the terrorists Jihad against all of Western cultures, and only give lip-service to being tolerant of all religions and cultures, it's all BS to appease the non-Muslims. This is why they voted for Obama by 89% and only for McCain by 2%, and they'll vote that way again in 2012.

Muslims usually don't have anything nice to say about other Muslims.

Obama, full of naive but audacious hope, made nice with the Muslims, via his Rodney King speech in Cairo and his kowtowing to the Saudis. Then, as the scales fell from his eyes, Obama began to realize that Muslims are in fact murderous, violent, corrupt, delusional psychopaths, fundamentally hostile to Western values, bent on the destruction of Israel and eager to exploit the useful idiots and anti-Semites, closet and otherwise, of the American and European left. As this realization is reflected in American policy, naturally the Muslims will become disenchanted with their erstwhile poodle.

Countries are thumbing-their-noses at the U.S., from what I can tell. They know we're vulnerable: we have to borrow money from China; we have major problems in Afghanistan; we have major problems in Arizona with illegal immigrants, drugs, gangs, crime; while our healthcare costs will continue to rise and bankrupt more Americans; and now our Gulf Coast is contaminated with oil because our government regulatory agency, MMS (which Obama told Salazar to fix)--Failed to do their job and gave BP a permit to drill, yes, drill 5,250 ft. deep Without the extra valve, blowout preventer.....
