DeMint opponent Alvin Greene asked to withdraw following felony obscenity charge revelation

The head of the South Carolina Democratic Party has asked Alvin Greene, the party's new nominee to challenge Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) in November, to withdraw from the race following revelations that Greene is facing a felony charge for allegedly showing obscene material to a University of South Carolina student. From party chair Carol Fowler's statement:

"Today I spoke with Alvin Greene, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the US Senate, and asked him to withdraw from the race. I did not do this lightly, as I believe strongly that the Democratic voters of this state have the right to select our nominee. But this new information about Mr. Greene has would certainly have affected the decisions of many of those voters," said Fowler.

When asked about the charge by the Associated Press, Greene declined comment and hung up on a reporter.

Read David Weigel's post about Greene -- "a 32-year-old unemployed army veteran who paid the filing fee to run then promptly disappeared" -- for more background on the disastrous nature of the Dems' pick to take on South Carolina's tea party icon.

Damn. And here I thought I could get a back ground check on anyone online. Guess the SC Dems didn't try that.

Yes, we Tea Party Members want most of the incumbents out and in the unemployment lines. But there are a few and I mean a very few incumbents we will support and Demint is one of them. obummer can't offer him a job. This would truly be a felony. We know that obummer would be influencing the outcome of an election. Why are you Demos so outdone? He just fits right in with the majority of you; like Edwards, Clinton, Kennedy, etc. He's one of you lock, stock, and barrel. Congratulations. The best thing about this for you Demos is this one didn't cost you a dime. Be happy and rejoice.

We wouldn't want a Democrat that did anything immoral would we? We want someone like Bill Clinton, he didn't show porn to Paula Jones, he showed his bent manhood.
Nothing wrong with that the Democrats said. Blow jobs in the oval office was OK the Deomcrats said. Feeling up Kahleen Wiley was OK with the Democrats. Sounds like a perfect Democrat candidatse.

This is a great line from Plato: "The penalty for not participating in political affairs was to be ruled by one's inferiors."
Although - in South Carolina - one wonders about who could possibly be inferior to the people who elected Jim Demented.

I find it unbelievable that this guy got nominated. By all accounts he didn't campaign, had no money and was more surprised than anyone when he won. The negative comments about racism, the tea party and GOP offenders are just a silly ineffective smoke screen to deflect attention from what really must be an acutely embarassing debacle by the democrats.

Well, this is one fine mess the Democratic Party has gotten itself into! However, there is a very simple solution - President Obama can just dispatch Bill Clinton to South Carolina right away, where he can discreetly offer Mr Greene a plum federal job, perhaps with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) which still has two high level openings following Mr Andrew Romanoff's refusal. Mr Greene is currently unemployed and very unlikely to win the general election in November, so I am sure he will be happy to accept. This way, a candidate more palatable to the Democratic Party can then step in.... problem solved!

One ultimately wonders should we be offended with Mr Greene’s behavior or somehow perversely delighted that a rogue like him can now end up as our next senator? Shouldn’t you visit South Carolina soon?

Looks like Jim DeMint finally has an opponent that is smarter and more ethical than he is.

Of course the Tea Party will throw their support behind this fresh new face instead of the lifelong Washington insider.

To do otherwise is for the Tea Party to admit they're just Washington insiders themselves.

"His name will be on the ballot on November the 2nd."

But this is the "vote out all incumbents" Tea Party election to really show those Washington clowns who's in charge, remember?

That means the Tea Party of South Carolina will be voting for Greene as their Senator because he's running against the incumbent DeMint.

Remember: VOTE OUT ALL INCUMBENTS. Pay absolutely no attention to what their views or, or what sexual felonies they may have been accused of. Just blindly vote for the guy who's not the incumbent.

Surely that will give us a responsible and competent government. Am I right?

I thought we were way beyond the beyond in racial harmony in the United States, and particularly int he Souf' where the DOJ has to approve even the slightest change in election procedures.

And that brings us to the situation where Mr. Al Greene, a black man, has won a primary to be the candidate for the office of United States Senator ~ but the lily-white leader of the state Democratic party said she asked Greene to withdraw from the race.

Was this approved by DOJ?

Is a new day of degradation and oppression opening up in South Carolina as Attorney General Eric Holder refuses to step in?

Oh, the humanity!

Sounds like a made up charge from the good ole boy southern dixiecrat crowd. Did he kidnap her, titillate her while tied up, I don't think so. Did he show a coed some porn she found vile and was offended, probably but who cares. I believe in innocent until proven guilty and what we have so far is hearsay without an indictment. Proof of his innocence will paint his accusers not him. Time will tell as a developing story gets the hard look.

Porn. Golly. Nobody looks at that...

I'd rather have that in power, than some imbecile still brainwashed on cut govt / cut taxes propaganda, after it's abject failure to deliver prosperity during the Reagan/Bush era.

Instead, it delivered massive debt, a handful of ultra-wealthy, 15 million unemployed, millions foreclosed out of home, tens of millions uninsured and 1 illness away from financial ruin.

Trickle Down anyone? Must be over 18, and a complete moron...

How is it that the Democratic Party nominates individuals with criminal backgrounds for high ranking political offices then they jump through hoops to force them off the ballot?

Look at Illinois were the Democratic Party nominee for lieutenant governor just happened to have several arrests and the party had to force him to give up his nimination!
