Howard Dean: Fox News 'absolutely racist' in Sherrod flap

By Matt DeLong

In a heated discussion on "Fox News Sunday," former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said that Fox's conduct during the Shirley Sherrod firestorm last week was "absolutely racist." From the transcript:

Let's just be blunt about this. I don't think Newt Gingrich is a racist, and you're certainly not a racist, but I think Fox News did something that was absolutely racist.

They took a -- they had an obligation to find out what was really in the clip. They had -- they had been pushing a theme of black racism with this phony Black Panther crap and this business and Sotomayor and all this other stuff. You -- I think you've got to be very -- I think the -- look the Tea Party called out their racist fringe, and I think the Republican Party's got to stop appealing to its racist fringe. And Fox News is what did that.

Host Chris Wallace shot back that Sherrod had already been forced to resign from her post at the U.S. Department of Agriculture before Fox News mentioned her name on the air, after a misleadingly edited videotape surfaced on a conservative website that appeared to show her telling an NAACP crowd in March that she withheld assistance from a white farmer because of his race. An unedited version of the tape later showed that Sherrod had actually used the anecdote to show how she had overcome her own racial biases in the mid-1980s. Sherrod later received apologies from the White House was offered her old job back.

Dean later appeared to cede that Fox had not aired the edited tape before Sherrod stepped down, but said it was irrelevant.

I don't think it matters whether it was before or after. The question is you played it. You didn't do your job ...

And there's been this ongoing theme about black racism in America. I agree with Newt [Gingrich] that racism has no place in America, whether it's black, white, Latino, or anything else.

Fox has drawn criticism from the left for fueling racial tensions with its heavy coverage of a voter intimidation case involving members of the New Black Panther Party in 2008. Critics of the Obama administration have pointed to the case as an example of the White House ignoring the civil rights of white voters.

(Photos: Shirley Sherrod's firing sparks firestorm)

Appearing opposite Dean, former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said the Sherrod incident demonstrated the White House's "continued incompetence." Gingrich deflected criticism of his own rush to judgment on the Sherrod affair, in which he called Sherrod's comments "viciously racist" before the unedited tape came to light, saying that he was "operating in the context of the secretary of agriculture having summarily fired her, and therefore there was no reason to disbelieve the clip."

Update, 4:45 p.m.
Michael Clemente, Fox News' senior vice president for news, said in a statement, "As we said this past week, some people such as the failed candidate Dean reflexively blame Fox for almost anything."

Oh, really, "SkyBeaver" -- you hire 5000 people a year and "ask them all" innocuous political questions?

If you give them each 20 minutes for an interview, which is very short, you're spending 30 hours a week doing nothing but interviews, and that's only of the people you claim to hire. Unless you hire almost everyone you interview, you don't have time to do anything BUT interview.

So how would you have any time to sit up in first class and sneer at the people behind you?

What a lying sack you are. Which makes all your smug bravado all that much more laughable.

In view of the comments of the Fox News deniers, WhateverHeSaid's post bears repeating:
"That what the goobers at Fox would like you to believe.
But it isn't true.
Both FoxNews.com and Fox Nation reported on the Sherrod clip BEFORE Sherrod resigned.
Before Sherrod resigned the headline on Fox Nation was "Caught on Tape: Obama Official Discriminates Against White Farmer"
After she resigned, it became, "Obama Official Resigns After Discrimination Caught on Tape"

For Howard Dean to suggest racism means is the same as admitting he has nothing. When everything else fails they cry racist. And those who would refer to anything from Media Matters and represent it as truth are themselves seriously disillusioned.

The administration acted in complete fear here. Someone obviously has too much time on their hands, trying. You would think they would be so busy creating jobs that they wouldn't have time to creat new problems for themselves. I'm surprised that someone hasn't tried to blame the Sherrod firing on Bush.

Howard Dean is an MD, a highly educated dude who represents a lot of other highly educated people. He's a voice of reason who represents people who fundamentally believe in the power of reason and the power of sensible debate.

My GOPS friends, therefore feel free to thumb your nose at Dr. Howard Dean. It lets those of us in "First Class America" -- the ones who sit in the First Class section of the airplane and wonder who exactly are these drooling idiots sitting behind us -- know exactly who you clowns are and where you stand.

We're smarter than you guys, we're richer than you guys, and, unfortunately for you, we're a whole lot meaner and ruthless than you guys.

Just remember, I hire 5,000 people a year and I ask all of them baiting, seemingly innocuous questions about their politics. If I even get a sense of possible right-winger looniness, you ain't gonna be hired, pal.

Have a nice life, low life GOP dirtbags. Have fun working at Wal-Mart.

Dean: Don't look at what the white house ordered, look how awful it was to be shown a tape?!?!
It's OK, I know if the shoe was on the other foot, and a white USDA official was using language like 'his own kind', and 'I did not want to give him all the help my job calls for' in 1986, and getting cheers for it (before the redemption) in 2010, Dean would be similarly outraged at MSNBC (it seems like they would air it from a blog, like fox would)

I noticed that Sherrod called people against the Obama care law racist due to the fact that the president was an African American. No one has a problem with that on the left, in 2010 she said this.

One question, when does equal = equal?

Posted by: thelaw1 | July 26, 2010 7:18 PM | Report abuse

crying racism is going to get worn out.

Here is just the few things I have seen extreme liberal people cry racism about.

The President is a socialist - racist
The Presidnet is a marxist - racist
The President is out of touch with regular people - racist
The President is running up crazy out of control deficits - racist
The Health care law will hurt more people than it helps - racist
The Arizona immigration law simply affirms that state agencies will enforce US law, and does not create any 'new' requirement to have your green card on you, the federal laws from 1986 require this, Arizona is affirming to enforce it per US law. The President lied when he said you would be stopped and thrown in jail for taking your family out to get ice cream. - racist
The President gave Scotland a nod and a wink to let them go ahead with the Al-Megrehi and then pretended to be outraged after we, the people, did not like it. - You guessed it, racist.

So you can sit there and say that editing people is against the rules, then you have to allow right wingers to be quoted in context. This is something liberals just cannot have. It is not news that some one edited a clip. It is a whole different thing to act on it at the White House level. Sherrod already confirmed the White House called and told her to pull her car over and resign. They acted with out the slightest investigation. Just like the Gulf Oil spill. Act first investigate later.

Today a CNN reporter lamented to the anchor that he, in fact, did not have any tape of the spilled oil where he was, but assured us he would keep looking, after all, the well has been capped for 10 days now and the cleanup operations are top notch and in full swing. When the anchor asked how the animal cleaning operation were going, again in a sort of sad voice, he said fewer and fewer animals have been needing cleaning so some of the cleaning centers will be shutdown, and BP denied that they were shutting down centers to save costs. Should BP keep centers open that are not cleaning animals?
Then they cut to some tape of the animal cleaners trying to capture a partly oiled pelican, but they couldn't get him, he was flying pretty strong.

President Obama - "We're the ones we've been waiting for", "Spreading the wealth around is good for everybody"
Karl Marx = "To each according to his needs, from each according to his abilities"
Howard Dean - "Capitalism with a little socialism is good, the thing to get right is how much socialism to have."
Who decides this???!!!

Saw a clip of Orielly saying Sherrod "needs' to resign. He wouldnt say she needs to resign if she already had resigned. This proves Fox is lieing again, They did talk about Sherrod before she resigned.

Like most shows, O'Rielly is taped at 5:00 and the very next day, he apologized for his comments.

It's pretty amazing that while Fox is growing in viewers, the lies and spoon fed stories from the DNC is spewed from the rest of the media. Already, we have the liars in print seeking taxpayer bailouts.

What happened to the free press controled by those they are supposed to monitor. This is worse than the MMS, SEC and all the other incompetent government agencies. Now, we are giving up our freedoms to this same corrupt government to cuddle us from craddle to grave.

I've watched silently for 40 years as the progressive movement has corrupted our Constitution that has kept Americans free and the envy of the world. Some of you, with your liberal teachings want a socialist style government. Do your homework. IT HAS NEVER WORKED SUCCESSFULLY! Put some real life behind you before you think you know better than the founders. You were probably taught these guys were racist, corrupt, etc. Wrong. This was a collection of some of the finest minds ever assembled and not for personal gain, but, for the People to stand against a corrupt and overbearing government some of you want to control our lives and liberties.

Of all documents ever written (other than the Bible) this one has stood for freedom to the people longer than any other country in the world and Americans have prospered by self effort and ideas. Socialism stifles the individual for the collective few winners chosen by the government. Under Socialism/Communism/Markism, you no longer will have the right to speak out against the system. You may think turning over all power and authority to the government is a good thing now, but, remember, someday, you will be on the loosing side and think about what you are willing to give up.

SILENT NO MORE!

It doesn't matter what the topic is. If the Government screws up, they blame Fox for it. Fox never mentioned Ms. Sherrod until after she was fired and based on that and the clip available, they were right. Yes, her entire message was of redemtion and put the WH in prospective. They were willing to fire her based on the advise of the NAACP, without hearing from her. This is where the true blame rests.

The 1st time I heard of it was on John King on CNN, but, I don't hear you calling them racists because that would not fit your agenda. John King was stunned by the phone call from the farmer's wife saying she did help save their farm.

NOOOOOO. You and your mentor, ye-ha Dean just throw Fox into the mix at every turn and twist they find themselves in. It's pretty pathetic because Fox, being the only conservative station is against the onslaught of the Democratic Party's control over the Lame Stream Media that is more interested in LiLo than real news.

Some of you need to get real and stop with the race baiting. It is unfounded to the degree that it may account for someone somewhere on both sides. Calling Fox racist is a tactic that is getting old.

If you would have read the message below the clip, which, the LSM either did and ignored or didn't want to include in their own coverage, stated it was to show racism in the NAACP audience clapped at her story of not giving a white farmer all she could do.

Be informed before calling names.

Dean as other political pundits etc , often make statements that are off the radar , but that said , Fox News maybe not be racist , but they do condone by omission and by promoting the radical elements in the Tea Party. I never watch Fox just because of their slanted view of news in general , they push story lines that have no basis or merit , or they give no notice to ones that do .....racist no , but they do push a certain agenda from their view point .
Fox News is often no news , unless you want to believe in doctored news. I perfer to take my news from real jouralists and news outlets. Fox sold their souls to the radical right a long time ago and we just have to have the commom sense to know the difference!
I live in the South and am of a certain age that I know what racism is , I still see it more now because of the Pres. Obama admin. so I choose to ignore the bigots that have come out of the wood work , so therefore make sure I listen to fair and truthful reporting .

kdmay emulated Breitbart thusly:

****

Now…let us address racism…Ready Progressives…Get ready to defend this:

Written by our Esteemed President.

From Dreams of My Father: “I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of 12 or l3, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.

” From Dreams of My Father: “I found solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance of animosity against my mother’s race.”

From Dreams of My Father: “There was something about her that made me wary, a little too sure of herself, maybe and white.”

From Dreams of My Father: “It remained necessary to prove which side you were on to show loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.”

From Dream of My Father: “I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own. I was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa, that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself: the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.”

From Audacity of Hope: “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

Now…Progressives…let us have a discussion about race…starting with our President and his statements from his books and please define racism so I can understand your thought process.

****

Alleged "quotations" 2, 4, and 6 were never spoken or writtem by Obama. "Quotation" number 2 was actually a quote from a writer for the American Conservative that has been reworded into the first person. In other words, you, kdmay, are repeating lies. The context (remember context?) for the other quotes can be found in the Snopes.com article that debunks what you have claimed here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/ownwords.asp. oh brother. lol. I've read a lot of nonsense in the past 10 years, but some of these posts, take the cake.

Fox News is racist? Wow. Talk about twisting story and finding the invisible, bogus boogie man under the bed...

I'm sorry, but how is Fox racist? By showing an incomplete tape? hmm. How about all the other networks showing incomplete pictures at tea parties or better, not showing any demonstrations by Americans against Obama's policies? Is that bigoted?

The only racists I see here are Sherrod, the liberal media, and democratic representatives. It's a tactic. That's all this is. A democratic tactic to take the steam out of the locomotive of real change.

Dean says: "phony black panther crap?" wow. Talk about bigoted. The interesting component here is that liberal whites are accusing white conservatives of being racist. Weird.

I mean, should we list every vile and gross case of misconduct, slant, bigotry against conservatives and blatant lies and falsities perpetrated by left-wing media, JOURNOLIST, to give an example, vs the screw up of the handling of this particular case, I'd say Fox News victory record would be in the neighborhood of like A Million to One.

Look, we are now a parliamentary system. The republic is dead. It is now like Canada: Conservatives VS Liberals. The left wing, progressive bus has been barreling down our highway for about 60 years and finally, the conservatives have pulled the brake line.

So continue to feed on your nonsense. You are going down in November. We don't care about your cries of racism. We don't care about your supposed injustices or calls for whatever they may be that week. We care about running you out of our country on a rail. Your anti-American sentiment has been exposed. You frauds are fumbling about. Every day we are finding out your secrets, your purposes, your corrupt hearts and minds. The poisoning of America is coming to an end.

Howard Dean was right, and Fox News did conduct a racist rant on its so-called news shows. What, you didn't see it? If you watched Fox News, but didn't see it you have become immune to hate speech. Can't you see propaganda pretending to be news?

I don't understand why there is even a debate about whether Fox News is 1) An organ of the Republican Party or, 2) That elements of the Tea Party are racist, or 3) That, to get ratings with the angry white male and with the extreme, fearful fringe of this country, Fox News is feeding racism and division.

All of those premises are true, sadly so for our country, and for our people.

We know the people on the right love America because they tell us that constantly. They just hate its government and every other American who doesn't agree with their view that the government is only legitimate when it is run by the Republican Party. This is the Party that undeniably gave us the current economic mess with which we are all living.

Come on Fox News, start helping us rebuild America instead of tearing it down so you can get ratings.

Why do the posters attempt to defame the only source of truth news in the U.S.S.A.? It is only 99 days until Nov. 2 elections when we can get some balance into our country. then 728 days until we can right the terrible wrong that was done in Nov. 2008. IF the country survives until then.

Nobody watches FOX except right wingers who merely want thier views confirmed; they do not want facts interfering. FOX and the delightful radio shows like Limbaugh get them all. All of the other news outlets split everyone else which enables FOX to brag that they get the most viewers. They blind followers brag abut it too but apparently don't understand the simple math. It has had a hughly negative effect on the country; I remember when only places like Germany and Japan had this type of propaganda machines and all American media strived to deliver real information and not propaganda drivel.

I'm trying to put myself in Shirley Sherrod's shoes. This is somewhat difficult due to the happy fact that I grew up as an upper middle class white kid in the suburbs north of New York City. When we went on vacation we didn't go by car - we went in a private plane that was owned by my dad! I am at a loss to explain to you how I became as left-of-center as I am. I'm sure that my youthful obsession with people like John Lennon and Dick Gregory had something to do with it. They were both accused by J.Edgar Hoover of corrupting the minds of the impressionable youth of this grand and glorious land of ours. Blame it on those guys.

I didn't grow up (as Shirley Sherrod did) as a poor black kid in the south. I wasn't surrounded on all fronts (as Shirley Sherrod was) by the vile sort of prejudice that told her, day after day, that she was not worthy to drink out of certain water fountains or eat in certain restaurants or use certain rest rooms. When my father died he was at home in a comfortable bed, surrounded by family and friends. Shirley Sherrod's father was murdered - shot in the back by a Klansman who was never even brought to trial. Had I been raised under the same circumstances as Shirley Sherrod, I would not today be a mere Progressive - I would today be a freaking bomb-throwing revolutionary, are you kidding me? The very fact that Shirley Sherrod was able to overcome her own racism is a testament to the woman's character. Let's all raise a glass in her honor. Cheers!

And it's all about the firing of Shirley Sherrod. So much for running Government "just like a business"; swift, arbitrary, capricious and vindictive. How dare a black woman take a white farmer to see a lawyer ?

The "corporate persons" that the Supreme Court has ordained are not what they seem. They are not American Citizens. Meaning they have no duty to support American interests neither here nor abroad and they are a class apart from ordinary citizens when it comes to negotiations with States and Municipalities eager to be "Business Friendly".

The last hope for the American Worker vanished last week when the White House failed to acknowledge that discrimination against "people of poverty" is the only racism left to fight.

FoxNews rules! Sorry, folks, but that's the way it - and no one is apologizing. Check out the statistics: Republicans and conservatives and tea party members are much more educated than Democrats and liberals! SURPRISE! Democrats are much more likely to be on welfare and working at low-paying jobs. The fact that you don't like our conservative policies just means you're probaby wanting the government to support you from the craddle to the grave. It's not going to happen! Try it and there will be another American Civil War. I'll say this for Obama. He's made Republicans/Conservatives realize that the time for apologizing to any member of any race is over!!!!!

It must mean that the person who wrote it is an Idiot.

It's always worth remembering that Fox News' viewers number less than 1% of the U.S. populace -- and that the Fox News' highest-rated cretins (Beck and O'Reilly) consistently lose out in cable ratings to "SpongeBob SquarePants."

LOL.... you are kidding right? I am not siding with or against fox news, but all it takes is looking up ratings on the internet dear....I do hope you were being sarcastic, but just in case----here are the most recent cable ratings as of July 21, 2010:

P2+ Total Day
FNC – 1,220,000 viewers
CNN – 457,000 viewers
MSNBC – 441,000 viewers
CNBC – 173,000 viewers
HLN – 277,000 viewers

P2+ Prime Time
FNC – 2,356,000 viewers
CNN – 687,000 viewers
MSNBC –841,000 viewers
CNBC – 195,000 viewers
HLN – 527,000 viewers

I mean, the closest is CNN, and they are behind by a minimum of 1 million if not almost 1.5 million in prime time.

I also suspect that a good portion of CNN's ratings are because a lot of airports and other general public businesses leave their TV's on CNN.

"This comment, in its entirety is amusing! The video has been in the hands of the NAACP this entire time. How do I know this? Because it is the NAACP’s video."
Wow, that was really profound. The fact is, Breitbart, claiming to be a news organization, selectively edited a video to provoke a racial response. No matter how you spin it, Breitbart through his actions, proved that he is not objective. The fact that it is the NAACP's video does nothing to absolve him of his despicable act. But you can try to keep spinning it like Ailes. Maybe he'll hire you if you succeed.
"Let’s see, they did it to Hilary and now they do it to t hose whom oppose what ever government take over they are proposing"
Who is "they"? Are you referring to a party claiming to be a legitimate news organization? If "they" smeared Hillary Clinton, as you claim, does it make Breitbart's selective editing of Sherrod's video acceptable?

Fact #1: Breitbart did not EDITE the video. When you claim someone edited a video, you are claiming that they altered it to change sound/voices/pictures. This did not take place.

Fact #2: The NAACP does in fact absolve him of EVERYTHING: he claimed in the beginning that his point was to show how racist the NAACP is and that they needed to clean up their own backyard before telling others to stop behaving in a racist manner-the Tea Party.

Fact #3: The NAACP members were in fact agreeing, laughing, clapping and Amening at her comments about how she was not giving the white farmer her full attention, how she sent him to his own people for help, how she felt he was looking down on her and she was going to show him… They had no idea where she was going with her “story”..…..that behavior is racist!

Fact #4: Sherrod does NOT deny behaving in a racist manner, her point was that she over came this racist behavior two weeks later and decided to help the white farmer. Therefore this does NOT absolve Sherrod of behaving in a racist manner, it merely shows that she decided to do her job and help a white man who needed help.

Fact #5: Sherrod continues to carry her self in a racist manner by saying racist comments as such, therefore calling a spade a spade/a racist a racist in this scenario with this racist bigot is justified: “I haven’t seen such mean spirited people as I have seen lately over this issue of health care. Some of the racist we thought was buried resurfaced. Now We endured 8 years of the Bush’s” and “we didn’t do the stuff these Republicans are doing because you have a black President”.
As for Hilary---they claimed she and Bill were racist, anyone who does not agree with Obama and his BS agenda is racist. But hey, what’s a few thousand full length videos, his excerpts from his book or the now infamous Journolist emails to get in the way-right?

Kind of a theme of this incompetent and inexperienced racist-huh?

It's Bush's fault, it's FOX News Fault, it's Breitbarts Fault, it's white America's fault.

Where is the outrage for the insults Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas deals with to this day?

When syndicated columnist Julianne Malveaux said that she hoped Justice Thomas’ wife serves him “lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease. Well, that’s how I feel.“, where was the media then?

I guess that didn’t count because they didn’t “expose” it.

When Justice Janice Rogers Brown and Dr. Condoleeza Rice were the subject of racist caricatures by cartoonists working for major metropolitan newspapers, where was the media then?

When Colin Powell was racially slurred (Uncle Tom Powell Stumps for Massah Bush) instead of celebrated as the first black Secretary of State, where was the media outrage?

I guess that didn’t count because they didn’t “expose” it.

When Ken Blackwell and Michael Steele respectively ran for statewide office and had Oreo cookies thrown at them, where was the media coverage and condemnation?
I guess that didn’t count because they didn’t “expose” it.

When California Regent Ward Connerly was racially slurred for wanting minorities to be held to the same college admission standard as everyone else (because he, as I, believe we are capable), where was the mainstream media then?

I guess that didn’t count because they didn’t “expose” it.

Breitbart posted the edited video to provoke a reaction from whites toward the NAACP. Washington overreacted by firing Sherrod before interviewing her about the speech. Now Breitbart and the rightards are claiming the firing as proof that Obama is too sensitive about race. What a joke! The real issue here is Breitbart's use of a selectively edited video to promote divisiveness and spread hatred.
The Russian spies who were deported a few weeks ago were in the US to influence public policy. News Corp, founded by a foreigner, and underwear "journalists" like Breitbart and Drudge pose a bigger threat to domestic tranquility than the Russian spies could ever have imagined. This comment, in its entirety is amusing! The video has been in the hands of the NAACP this entire time. How do I know this? Because it is the NAACP’s video. That being said, the NAACP could have reviewed their own tape and concluded that she was talking about how she behaved in a racist manner but decided TWO WEEKS later that it was about the “have and have not’s”.

Regardless, she still behaved in a racist manner. And, according to the following comments she is still racist:
“I haven’t seen such mean spirited people as I have seen lately over this issue of health care. Some of the racist we thought was buried resurfaced. Now We endured 8 years of the Bush’s” and “we didn’t do the stuff these Republicans are doing because you have a black President”.
So, labeling a group that is predominantly white as racist because they do not believe in the governments take over of health care is not racist? Right-double standards and hypocrisy!

Obama is not too sensitive about race, he is himself a racist. All one has to do is read his books and take it from there. But to add insult to it all, let’s free the black panthers and let’s cry racism every time I do not get my way or someone doesn’t agree with me.

“Cherry picking facts, using ridicule, posting incendiary headlines, and inciting their disciples to engage in uncivil, playground behavior is all part of their MO.”
Now, who does that sound like? Let’s see, they did it to Hilary and now they do it to t hose whom oppose what ever government take over they are proposing……LOL

LOL.... you are kidding right? I am not siding with or against fox news, but all it takes is looking up ratings on the internet dear....I do hope you were being sarcastic, but just in case----here are the most recent cable ratings as of July 21, 2010:

P2+ Total Day
FNC – 1,220,000 viewers
CNN – 457,000 viewers
MSNBC – 441,000 viewers
CNBC – 173,000 viewers
HLN – 277,000 viewers

P2+ Prime Time
FNC – 2,356,000 viewers
CNN – 687,000 viewers
MSNBC –841,000 viewers
CNBC – 195,000 viewers
HLN – 527,000 viewers

I mean, the closest is CNN, and they are behind by a minimum of 1 million if not almost 1.5 million in prime time.

I also suspect that a good portion of CNN's ratings are because a lot of airports and other general public businesses leave their TV's on CNN.

Yee.Haaa…How I do love Dean…he is the “second” gift that keeps giving after Bite Me. I will not defend Breitbart on this…however, clearly Wallace needed to have a time line to show Boy Dean how this unfolded. If he is going to defend the administration, then he must also defend their demand for firing Sherrod. Additionally, with the NAACP having the ENTIRE tape to begin with…why did they call for her resignation FIRST…Hatchet job…seems like a hatchet job on Fox, TPM and whoever else they can find.

This is all about net neutrality.

Posted by: kmday | July 25, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Using Dean’s “logic”, the Obama administration was racist for firing Sherrod without due process or even giving her a chance to provide her side of the story. And the NAACP was racist for putting out its condemnatory statement without bothering to review ITS OWN TAPE of her entire speech. The saddest part of this repulsive political strategy by Dean and his pals is that it trivializes racism – which remains a serious problem in our (and just about every other) society. Because of people like Dean, calling someone a racist these days has about as much impact as calling that person a poo-poo head.

The timeline can be found here:

If nothing else,
1. Poor, victimized Shirley Sherrod had a private phone conversation with the President of the United States.

2. She received a better job offer.

3. 'Everyone' knows that her father was murdered by a white man; who went free.

4 Many, many more now know how important her husband (his work) has been to Civil Rights in this country.

5. Shirley has been given and taken (quite well), the opportunity to express her honest belief via main stream media programs that Andrew Breitbart and FOX News want to see the return of slavery.

Go figure?

None of this would have happened if it weren't preceeded by almost 3 years of calling people racists if they have an opposing political viewpoint to the Democrats.

This didn't happen in a vacuum.

Racism isn't the issue here. Ideological bigotry is.

'Racist' has become one of those words, like 'socialist', 'progressivist', and 'Muslim', which has been so abused and distorted that it hardly has any meaning. Whatever you call it, Republicans have been actively attempting to exploit the large number of ignorant people who feel that the election of a black man has "taken away their country". To cover their tracks, they accuse anyone who points this out of being a 'racist'. In the immortal words of PeeWee Herman, "I know you are, but what am I?"

Anybody who doesn't agree with the "Progressive Democrats" is labeled a "Racist."

They have used this term, so much that I guess 70% of all voting Americans are "Racists."

They come in all colors and all types, including:

Medical racists
Unemployed racists
Student racists
Science and Technology racists
Educational racists
Economic racists
Senator racists
House of Represntatives racists

and the list goes on.

I strongly suggerst that Howard Dean get his head examined, since "Physician, heal thy self," apparently isn't working, like his "public option."

When a party controls 2/3rds of the House and the Senate and the Executive branch, and the country goes to heck in a hand-basket, it isn't the Republican's or Bush's fault!!!

We'll remember in November, Howard Dean!!!

What few seem to comment on is the degree of polarization in the United States. Most of the comments spew hatred, resentment. This comes from both right and left. All seem to be caught up in labeling what they perceive as the other side. This seems to be especially intense on the right and they are fueled by propaganda from Fox News. As Marx said, in advanced capitalism everything becomes a commodity and is thus is up for sale. Fox News certainly sells but does not inform. And it plays on the vast ignorance of most of the American people who like Sarah Palin do not have a passport, do not speak another language. A sad state of affairs for a country that is supposed to be a democracy. The left is caught up in its own traps, labeling as well. I suggest that the people who are stuck in the theme of black racism try to understand what black people had to go through in the United States. Shirley Sherrod is an example of forgiveness. She was capable of overcoming the devastating situation of having her father killed and no justice done. Oh Callous white folks. Try to put yourself in your shoes. Learn from her and learn from other countries that have had more state intervention in medical care and have a longer life expectancy than the United States. Learn about Germany that had medical insurance since the late nineteenth century under Bismark. The world does not begin and end with the United States. It is a disgrace that the people of the world's richest nation seem to be the most spiteful and ignorant. So much hatred.

ELITE MEDIA LOOKING AWAY, IGNORING HISTORY AT COMING RACIAL CONFLAGRATION

The national media is intimidated by right wing radio and cable jocks, or are just looking for a potential job with FOX, in either scenario this so called elite and educated media is ignoring world history and are looking the other way at this gathering storm.

Rush Limbaugh and his "Lemmings" along with other Right Wing Media and multi-millionaire anti-Obama jocks are pushing USA toward Racial Conflagration. We will end up like Northern Ireland type balkanization environment if we are lucky.

There are just too many people in this country who are potential candidates for al Qaeda recruitment because they do not have "skin in the game." and these Tea Party and radical right-wingers want to push these disenfranchised and pent-up angry further on to the fringes.

The attitudes and actions by many of these right wingers are just self destructive on its face, but there is an arrogance as to consequences of making enemies within the homeland. (These people have never railed up before thus there is no recognition it will happen.)

Fortunately, if not luckily, we have a multi-racial president who by his presence slows the urge of these groups toward recruitment by radicals. However, his position is no guarantee to deter receptivity to recruitment for long of these groups, particularly since he is being minimized in statute and substance by the demagogues on the right.

As an after thought, just what in the hell do these middle class "Lemmings" think this president can do to them that President Bush has not done already? All of the nation’s wealth is already spent.

If this president is really a so-called "Socialist" then why isn’t it argued to give back or deny their Medicare and social security, VA benefits and home mortgage deductions and be free of socialistic complicity?

Typical of Dean...flying off his handle and into a rant, while mixing up all of the facts.

Fox didn't release this video. Breitbart did. They aren't the same organizations. Fox reported on the rising controversy over the video just like every other major news organization did. I was hearing about this on the Washington Post website at the same time that the story was airing on Fox News. Dean wants to blame Fox for this because that's what he does in every situation, but this time it simply doesn't add up. Fox was one of many news organizations who went chasing this phony story, and if they are culpable, they are all equally culpable.

And even if the news organizations blew it, that's still no excuse for the White House. The video was obviously excerpted, and agency dumb enough to fire an employee without researching the full video first, or any organization dumb enough to denounce a former speaker for a speech that she made to them years ago without first going back and looking at the video that they themselves possess, deserves public humiliation. Had the NAACP and White House shown an ounce of integrity and prudence, they would be triumphing right now about how they so easily swatted down a phony attack. Instead, they've turned themselves into the biggest idiots in the story, and no amount of finger-pointing by Dean is going to change that.

A More Important Sherrod Lesson
What Shirley Sherrod realized over 20 years ago (i.e., her eyes were opened to viewing people beyond their race) is what Malcolm X & Martin Luther King Jr. concluded and acted upon before both were assassinated. Malcolm and Martin concluded race is a pseudo divider and that the more important division is between rich and poor people. After returning to the U.S. from visiting Mecca in 1964, Malcolm got a new outlook on integration and said he met "blonde-haired, blued-eyed men I could call my brothers." Instead of just preaching to African-Americans, he started focusing on the poor of all races. Martin’s “Poor People Campaign” in 1965 focused on economic justice and housing for the poor in the U.S. King said, “We believe the highest patriotism demands the ending of the war and the opening of a bloodless war to final victory over racism and poverty”. Can anyone name another U.S. leader that came to the same conclusion, acted upon it and survived?

Posted by: ljpipes | July 25, 2010 3:22 PM | Report abuse

The oldtime Democrats were probably just as racist as the Republicans, but it came clear to me in Dec,1964 while driving through Alabama. A huge billboard on the side of the road with a picture of Barry Goldwater and the phrase, "In your heart, you know he's right". In the cotton field below the sign was a group of black sharecroppers picking cotton by hand into long trailing canvas bags. The whites of the south mostly Democrats, changed their party and started voting Republican because that phrase to them meant, "He'll keep them in their place". In 2008, when I told some men in Arkansas that I was going to vote for Obamaa, their immediate reaction,"But he's a n*****"!I reminded them that their sons and grandsons would be drafted within six months if McCain became President because we would be at war with Iran. In the deep south many voters like the Democratic programs but vote Republican based on the issues of God, Guns, or Gays and a good dose of racism. Their TV channels are tuned to FOX and their radios to either Limbaugh or a GAAWD station. It will take a lot to change their views.
This whole messy affair should serve as a metaphor to explain why 81% of the people in the US think Iran is building nuclear weapons. Instead of lying manipulators stirring up the racist crowd, we have lying manipulators stirring up the warhawks. So far, the White House and the news media have been asleep on these important issues.

Posted by: Aarky | July 25, 2010 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Liberal news outlets lean over backwards to protect against showing blacks in a bad light. Whether that is a kind of racism or oversensitivity on racial matters I can't say. But the liberal press avoided the Acorn mess and Van Jones to name only two for obvious reasons. And historically it has treated Al Sharpton as a man worthy of respect -despite his role in a riot that led to people dying and a role in charging a white policeman with a crime he did not commit. Without the overwhelming black vote Democrats would never win another national election so it is not irrational for such as Dean to protect the base. Dean's charge of racism against Fox in the Sherrod matter falls flat -Fox didn't cover the story until after the lady was forced out by the Obama administration. As is his custom Dean doesn't bother about facts when he makes incendiary charges. He is a very emotional guy.
Finally, to criticize Obama as unprepared to govern and therefore incompetent subjects anyone who expresses that view to charges of racism. Which is exactly what liberal Democrats want- to silence the political opposition. In a good cause of course.

I don't think they're racist, that's a rather narrow definition of who they are. They're fascist, as in Nazis. They even use the same colors in their news shows as Nazi Germany did too.

Calling them merely racist is too kind for what they are. These are the sort of people we shot in WWII. It was a good idea then, it's still a good idea today.

Two wrongs don't make a right. It is irrelevant that Fox played the clip after her firing...over and over again. They had just as much responsibility to determine whether it was accurate just like the other news organizations. AND, when word started to bubble up that it was a doctored and mis-leading tape....Fox just kept on playing it for as long as they could get away with it...nailing away at that coffin.

THEN, once the MSM acknowledged that tape was fake....how long until Fox admitted it too? MUCH longer than everyone else....and very quietly too.

Let's not forget, that racist half-witted bigot O'Reilly DID promote the lie BEOFRE she was fired!!!

Posted by: postgettingworse | July 25, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

That is the genius of Fox News. The "News" side pretends to be objective, pretends to not have any idea what the O'Reilly/Hannity/Beck operation is doing. No one should let them get away with that though. Fox News Network as a whole is a propaganda operation of the radical right. The "news" side carries stories that O'Reilly/Hannity/Beck scream about and the opinion side creates dust storms for the "news" side to cover. People like Chris Wallace and Brit Hume are right-wing-leaning former newsmen are paid a lot of money to be glorified flacks for Rupert Murdoch. They provide an oily patina of credibility to this noxious operation.

This case for some reason has crystallized what Fox is about, but airing lies and half-truths is more the rule than the exception at Fox.

Fox is the greatest danger to American Democracy since the McCarthy era. The sooner people wake up to the danger, the better.

Look at Howard Dean spewing his hatred and prejudice from the platform of national T V. People who listen to this loser will really get far in life. See you at the polls!

Yes, the doctor is off his meds. What does he think he is doing giving an honest assessment of Fox News being racist. I watched Hannity the other night talking to the parents of people behind the movie The Blind Side and you can see the racism seething from this miserable example of a human being. Not understanding the parents motto of helping people first, worrying about their race second. He is such a disgusting human.

Fox News has no loyalty to our contry and remember, the media is only as liberal as the giant corporations that own it.

With Aussie owned News Corp having their Fox News and associated networks shouting with their huge amount of power the word liberal in disdain since the networks inception in the 90's, what would you expect people to think about liberals?

Organize or hide? Fox News and the rest of the "media for sale" hope the latter.

Money does buy anything in the USA, including truth. Money even buys opinions in the WSJ and the NYT. Don't ever forget it. Somebody with lots of money wants Americans to be ignorant so they make ignorant electoral choices. The media is a major culprit in the numbing of Americas intelligence.

It's good to hear how much power and influence Fox News an Australian owned Corporation has over so many Americans. They are not he only one. Ever heard of Sandline International? Oh wait I'm sorry it's called Aegis Defense Services now. Americans give tons of moneys to them too.

Connecting the dots should be simpler for people, but it is not. We can only make claims and opinions based on the information that is given to us or that we find ourselves and sometimes the truth is so unsettling that people decide not to look down the rabbit whole too deep.

With the truth comes the responsibility of trying to understand. Who wants a world of understanding?

We mustn't burden ourselves with knowledge of our own complicity in the subverting of truth for profit. We take solace in our right to be ignorant and those that profit from death take solace in our desire to be so.
