Michelle Obama highlights preventive screening coverage under health law

By Nia-Malika Henderson
First Lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday highlighted regulations under the federal health-care law that will require new health plans to cover the cost of preventive screenings for diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure starting in the fall.

"Getting access to early care and screenings will go a long way in preventing chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and high-blood pressure," Obama said, flanked by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Dr. Jill Biden at the GW Medical Faculty Associates.

"And good preventative care will also help tackle an issue that is particularly important to me as First Lady and as a mother - and that is the epidemic of childhood obesity in America today. These are important tools, and now it's up to us to use them."

New health plans beginning on or after Sept. 23, 2010, will have to cover routine vaccines, and screenings for diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure among others.

A major challenge for the administration and congressional Democrats going into the fall is selling the health care law--many of its provisions don't go into effect until 2014.

Administration officials said about 40 million people will benefit initially, and some 88 million people by 2013.

"Four months ago, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. After decades of trying, this landmark bill finally puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will give families the control they need over their health care," Obama said. "Once it takes full effect, this reform will help lower costs, hold insurance companies accountable, and give our families the security of knowing that their insurance coverage will be there when they need it most."

Obama has had a busy week so far promoting some of the administration's top priorities. On Monday, she addressed the NAACP in Kansas City and then went to Panama City, her first visit to the gulf region since the massive oil spill.

Obama said. "Once it takes full effect, this reform will help lower costs

The services that are mandated are over 500.00 - assuming a 1 x per year usage, that's 500.00 more per year expenses

I would be very surprised if costs go down, and I would be surprised if the rate ONLY goes up 1.5%

Adding in the extra fees and taxes that will be passed on to you,

and the projected (by the white house) that 88,000,000 will lose coverage -
and I see much higher rates, not lower
