Obama criticizes Hoekstra on congressman's home turf

By Anne E. Kornblut
HOLLAND, Mich. -- President Obama took a shot at Rep. Pete Hoekstra during an event here Thursday, subtly taunting the Michigan Republican - who was seated in the front row - as among those who opposed the federal stimulus package but showed up at a groundbreaking ceremony funded by it.

Obama welcomed Hoekstra during his opening remarks. At the same moment, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs sent a note to reporters pointing out Hoekstra as a "great quote opportunity!" in the audience. Hoekstra, who is running for Michigan governor, has been a vocal critic of the stimulus package.

"There are some folks who want to go back - who think we should return to the policies that helped to lead to this recession," Obama said later in his comments honoring a new advanced battery factory being built by the company LG Chem. "Some made the political calculation that it's better to obstruct than lend a hand. They said no to the tax cuts, they said no to small business loans, they said no to clean energy projects. It doesn't stop them from coming to ribbon cuttings -- but that's OK. "

Hoekstra, interviewed afterward, called Obama's remarks "unpresidential."

"It demeans the office of the president. It's disappointing. It is unpresidential," Hoekstra said. "This is my home district. These people are paying the taxes that he's handing out today. I'm here to respect the office of the president, and I don't think he reciprocated."
He said he would have preferred to spend the money on lower taxes rather than subsidies for new factories.

Well, I admit I don't keep up on corporate tricks, but can you tell me how you pass on a corporate profits tax?

I know you AVOID it by keeping several sets of books, one set which accounts for income and outgo in a way that permits you to pay dividends from profits that the set you keep foe the government somehow eats up in special expenses.

Or keeping your expenses in such a way that your North American Division loses money but your non taxed Bermuda subsidiary makes a killing.

There, in a neat, concise package, is the essence of Republican cluelessness. Hoekstra went to the opening of a factory he opposede. The factory will provide jobs, in a state that desperately needs them.

Hoekstra would have preferred tax cuts.

If you don't have a job, you have no taxes to cut, Pete. The President pointed that out, you grumbled, and then showed Michigan exactly why you shouldn't be in Congress, and definitely shouldn't be Michigan's Governor.

When Pete Hoekstra talks about lowering taxes, what he's saying is BUSINESS and the WEALTHY need lower taxes. Don't ever get him wrong. Better yet, ask him what he has done FOR this country during the terms he served in Congress. Nothing - except vote 60 times against anything the Dems presented to Congress. "Nothing is any good" - according to Pete - unless it's lowering taxes on business and the wealthy, and only if it's proposed by Republicans. Pete voted against all stimulus, including the Green Stimulus that produced the LG Battery plant that's going in at Holland, Michigan, and several others around our State, I live within a quarter mile of Pete, and do NOT plan to vote for him in his race for Governor of Michigan. He's using his 'lower taxes' routine as his main reason to run for governor, and that only means Michigan will lose much needed tax sources if he wins. We have people running for that position that have created new jobs in Michigan - not Pete.
President Obama was right when he said there are people that want to go back to what we had - and that includes Wall Street taking the people for all they can, lower taxes for ALL businesses, lower taxes for all WEALTHY people, raising taxes on the 'little guy'. Pete has promised that!
I cheered for Obama when he made his comments about those that would hinder new business by voting against them in Congress.
Michigan has the highest unemployment in the nation, and Pete wants to tax the people more. BOOs for Pete.

Mr. Hoekstra ought to consider himself lucky the people of Michcigan do not lynch him. He believes Mr. Obma's remarks are unpresidential? Perhaps he ought to go back some 30 years and read the nasty remarks Ronald Reagan made on the campaign trail against his opponents in the 1980 election. Reagan was a very low-blow nasty politician. At least Mr. Obama criticized Hoekstra for his inability to see what was in front of his face and help the people of his state.

Pete Hoekstra can never be accused of a desire to help his fellow man. He is a typical Republican politician who would vote to repeal all regulation of all industries, including the Food and Drug Administration. Someone ought to remind him of the fact that it was Teddy Roosevelt - a Republican - who rammed the Pure Food and Drug laws down the throats of a recalcitrant Congress. Where are those Republicans from the early 20th century who, though conservative, had the comm0on sense to know that sometimes you have to reform business by regulating it.

It was Mr. Hoekstra who voted against the interests of the people of this country when he said "nay" to the stimulus package. He ought to be ashamed of himself, but I am sure he is not. In this day and age we do not need people like him in Congress. He reminds me of another dumbell from Illinois, Everett Disksen, who for all his hayseed-like conservative views was reasonable, and turned out to be a fairly good senator. Perhaps Mr. Hoekstra ought to read up on Dirksen's biography before he opens his mouth and tells us he thinks the President was being "unpresidential."

Pete,
You neo-cons just don't understand that you either command respect; or, you can have a tantrum like a little kid and demand respect. Obama commands it.

You had the little tantrum and stamped your foot and demanded. But, your demand will never get respect because it's undeserved. You were trying for undeserved honors and trying to lie about what you did!

The kitchen just got a bit warm and it looks like you should hit the door.

Since it's obvious you can't take the heat, Pete, you should get out of the kitchen. And voters know a liar when they see one.

The budget director for President Carter, Bert Lance, was indicted.
Not only was he found not guilty but his bank was, and is solvent!
The budget director for President Reagan, David Stockman, was also indicted.
The charges against him were dropped even though his company declared bankruptcy within a week of his resignation!
That is a bottom line!

Be that as it may, he just elevated Hoekstra above the crowd and made him the next Governor of Michigan. It is the dream of every GOP candidate to have Obama say something negative about them.

And as for those who can't take it, your man Obama is the prime example. An immature narcissist who came up privileged and never ran anything but his mouth.

Both Obama and this country would have been much better served had he spent a few years in Harlem schoolyards learning to be a man instead of that stint as the token black boy at the Punahoohoo School for the grossly overprivileged.

srw3: WRONG. Governors voted against the stimulus, not only because they knew the massive amount would not 'stimulate' (which it didn't), also because it forced them to increase their states' budgets, such as w/unemployment benefits. Go research that.

As I stated earlier, states were "forced" to take these funds -- they were simply allocating it.

At the corporation I work for, I was against creating a new position & was essentially 'voted against'. Does that mean I am a hypocrite if I attend the new employee's dinner reception? Should I refuse to go or pout in the corner? That's apparently what Mr "Unpresidential" believes I should do.

Hey, Hokstra wasn't required to be there. He was trying to show that he supports the job creation initiatives that he voted against. Stating facts (Hokstra voted against the funding for the project he is now supporting) is not taunting or humiliating anyone. It is the height of hypocrisy for Hokstra to try and take credit for stimulus while he rails incessantly about how the stimulus didn't create a single job and that govt spending can't create jobs. And lets not forget that he voted against the biggest middle class tax cut in history. 60+% of the stimulus went to tax cuts and aid to states. I think that Michigan got a lot of that state aid. Yet Hokstra can't bring himself to either support a bill that benefited his state and cut taxes (something he is allegedly for) or admit that he and the rest of the republicans are wrong when they say that the stimulus didn't create a single job.

People are leaving in droves. Taxes are not always only evil. And I guess we're both right to some point, as the Constitution says in Article 1 of Section 8 (The Legislative Branch/Powers of Congress):To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years; To provide and maintain a Navy;To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces. So tell me what it is they want to take us back to when they claim to "take our country back".
-------------
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt as if your question is a legitimate request for information. Let's take it one at a time:
1) Social Security and Medicare: You are correct...dubious overreach of the Constitution. Refund all taxes withheld with compounded interest and start over with a program where each individual controls their own retirement and medical account.
2) Medicaid: Even more dubious overeach. Eliminate entirely.
3) National Military: provided for in the Constitution (remember the President is designated as Commander in Chief).
4) Streets: unless needed to support some explicit federal function, roadbuilding is a local function and, as throughout most of our history, revert to local choice and funding.
5) fire and police: local functions to be determined and funded locally. Ditto for education.
6) "take the country back": in a word, end the "nanny state" and get the federal government back to the functions designated in the Constitution.

I would prefer that projects of local purpose and value be paid for largely if not entirely by the beneficiaries. I, for one, have voted for levies for improvements such as this. Far preferable to sending money off to Washington so that it can be skimmed off and used to support a worthless bureaucracy and then have the remainder trickle back as a "gift" to the affected locality.

This is what is so galling about Obama's appearance and words in Holland Michigan today. And it is that confrontation which will have the perverse effect of elevating Hoekstra to the Michigan governorship.

Granted that Bush was a major disappointment trying, ala Nixon, to coopt progressive policies. But the boom that you observed in the last six years of the Clinton Administration was the product of two factors:

1) the end of the cold war stress on the budget, aka "peace dividend";

2) divided government and the beneficial effect of our Constitutional checks and balances..., in this case, fiscal responsibility.

While the electorate is only dimly aware of the logic of divided government, just as in 1994, we are about to get it. If Obama responds as did Clinton in 1995, he will be reelected. If not, you have another Jimmy Carter...with or without the concomitant Iranian debacle.

I note there are few if any comments relating to God's position. God claims to own all the universe. He parceled it out to stewards and left. We use capitalism to maintain a record of stewardship of each parcel. God states the principle in Deut. 19:14; 'no one is allowed to transfer value from one steward to another'. Thus I understand the stimulus action was a transgression against God's command.
Barna and Gallup count Christians to be about 6% of the population and the contents of the comments suggest they are polling too high. A Jew should comment.

Governors of states who were against the stimulus had to take the funds & had to allocate the funds. Are you all seriously that ignorant?

Though against, they still participated in 'ground-breaking ceremonies' & did so in a "presidential-like" manner, unlike Obama.

At the office today, 7 mid & exec level managers had to decide which candidate to give an employment offer to. I was personally against the creation of the new position altogether. If I attend the new hire's dinner reception, am I a hypocrite? According to Obama, I should refuse to attend or at least go pout in the corner somewhere.

CincinnatiRIck - actually I'm not advocating for a welfare state at all. I really do not understand why the majority of the women at the tea party rallies are standing there, some having never worked at all & never paid a dime into social security yet they then get a free 50% social security check on top of what their husbands take home after paying in. Isn't it being a hypocrite to advocate doing away with social security, while cashing your check? Guess your ideas of being a hypocrite is different than mine. If they were honest about "less government and less taxes" then why would they indulge in taking money which they never paid for? Social Security would be totally solvent if those that never paid in didn't receive. If the tea partiers believe in going back to the original constitution, then there's no allowance whatsoever for social security, medicare, medicaid, a national military, streets, fire depts, police depts and many other things we enjoy in our lives daily. So tell me what it is they want to take us back to when they claim to "take our country back". It all appears to be very racist...because these problems didn't come about just with President Obama--where were they during the past 8 years? Probably afraid to open their mouths because the repugs would have called them terrorists and they'd vanished...

goodman52 - and why didn't that work under the republicans when they had all 3 branches of government? Why did we end up like we did after 8 years of their cutting taxes for the rich---where were the jobs? Only 3M created under this Bush "help my rich cronies" plan...while there were 22M created under the Clinton administration during the same number of years-and he left a huge surplus for the losers that took office after him. Who are the folks believing otherwise, and why would they? Totally illogical.

So, Concerned 28, who then IN YOUR HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED OPINION is qualified to run the country?
And how far should He/She/They be allowed to go, in order to make sure the "great unwashed masses" are kept in check?
They cling to their God, their Guns, and their unsophisticated view of the Constitution ... you know ... they think it means what it clearly states. Ha! What rubes! Come, comrade and explain how we can make laws that defy the clear meaning if it suits us! Yes ... now THAT's sophistry! ... ah, er, I mean, sophistication!
They need a great mind, a lawyer, like you, perhaps ... You and Barak, the community organizer, to explain that it doesn't mean what you think it means.
For example, it takes a college professor to scramble:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech ... no, ordinary chumps like the American electorate cannot sort that out

or:
...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I know! I know we are not sophisticted enough to know when we are posting in the presence of our betters ...

That being settled, you'll find us completely unwilling to bow down to you or your ilk, to lick the hands that feed us and submit to their chains of untenable debt and the taxes that you promised would not follow ... But which we KNOW MUST follow.
The American people are smart enough to know when they have been bamboozeled by either Democrats who run as centerists or Republicans who claim to be something they are not.
We threw out the the hypocrite Republicans who had not already gone to jail (eh, Duke Cunningham?) and Now? Now November can't come fast enough and we will pray and vote and try again to find another American revival.
We may not be sophisticated but we are optimists!

Bottom line - was what President Obama said the truth? Yes it was...the man did vote against it and then did attend. Of course that's just normal for republikkans to talk out both sides of their mouths. So what's the problem with the obvious truth? We're all still waiting for the tea partiers to tell us how they can go cash their social security checks and go to their doctors on their medicare...and then go out rallying to end those very benefits while decrying the "evil government." Hypocrites all! -- Sherry 91
----------------------------

I'm tired of the innuendo that there is some sort of hypocrisy in the support for Social Security and Medicare while opposing big government and its intrusion into their lives. I don't know whether you are dishonest or merely stupid in conflating Social Security and Medicare (for which folks are taxed during their working lifetime) with welfare, SSI, Medicaid and other government handouts that were never EARNED.

Hard working Americans would have been far better off investing the FICA and Medicare tax deducted from their pay. So before you brand anyone as a hypocrite for taking Social Security or Medicare from the government, you had better be prepared to refund the taxes that were extorted as "contributions" to these programs over the years, WITH INTEREST ACCRUED AND COMPOUNDED. It shouldn't be a problem...didn't Al Gore reassure us it was all safely squirreled away in a "lock box"? No can do? Then you admit that they are both gigantic, actuarily unsound Ponzi schemes and robbing from future generations...exactly as the TEA Party has protested.

Of course you are advocating for the welfare state...you just lack the character to admit it. Now, once you have made the victims of Federal payroll extortion whole for their thirty five or forty years of "contributions", I'm sure the TEA partiers would have no problem whatsoever with your version of fairness going forward. But until then, you insult their intelligence and they will pay you back by ravaging your candidates in all but the bluest states.

I can't believe it. There are still some blithering idiots out there who cannot understand the simple equation that lower taxes = more money for the business owner = more jobs = more product sales that equates to more demand that produces more jobs and more tax money, which ultimately = more money in the government payback coffer. What is so difficult about it? Do you want to get out of this deficit mess or not?

We can leave the "was he there for the photo op or to support the president" argument to the side we want to believe, however let it be noted that the company LG Chem which was touted in the article is foreign owned. Jobs it may provide, but how much corporate tax will be paid to our country? Better it should have been stimulus funds for an American-owned plant. For whom does Mr. Hoekstra advocate lower taxes? He is misinformed about their value--after all that were handed out to big business in the last administration, the rate of job creation didn't even keep up with population growth. If he favored lower taxes for the people of the state, how would that support the state's services, especially as it would create no jobs nor would it get Michigan's poor into a higher standard of living. Let's exchange dunce caps for thinking caps, please!

He said he would have preferred to spend the money on lower taxes rather than subsidies for new factories.

Hoekstra is a fool. Lowering taxes does nothing to create jobs. I own a small business. I pay taxes. I pay workers. The only thing that will make me hire more people is an increase in the quantity of work to do. Without that, a lower tax rate just lets me put more of the earning s into my pocket. Why on earth would I hire people to stand around idle? Job creation = Demand creation.

The political harumphing aside, the sense of the article regards the President taking an unwarranted direct swipe at a sitting member of Congress in attendance. Even the great Senate caretaker and fellow Dem, Robert Byrd, must be spinning over the absence of decorum. Regrettably, this was not the first instance of this failing by the Chief Narcissist (See Supreme Court, State of the Union 2010), (See also Give the Queen of England an iPod with your speeches on it. What? No Beatles or Roling Stones?)

This was not a partisan political event, or maybe what created the issue was that the President thought it was. Possibly, it's that the President doesn't really care what a member of the House thinks. Today's Washington Post reports even members of his own party are calling him out on that issue.

Mr. President, perhaps it's time to heed the words of Mark Twain: "It's better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it." But then again, maybe we have enough proof now.

Nuff said.

You all Lie! Just like the current President!
I am a former Union Member!
From a Union Family!
We were Democrats One and All!
We didn't find Republicanism.
We found Christ and it changed our viewpoints! We began seeing through the lies. We quit drinking. We quit smoking. We quit cheating on our wives and calling it freedom!
And we dropped you like all the other bad habits.
The fact that you SAY you are FOR THE POOR don't make it so.
You are for the poor as long as he/she (Black, White, or Green ... male or female) don't get uppity and try using the principles of the Bible to rise from the poverty pool. If he does that He/She is an Uncle Tom! Or a traitor to the Union! Wow! How can that be?
No, livin' rich is for the priviledged class like Al Gore who doesn't practice the green lifestyle he preaches.

My grandfather, who helped start one of the unions in our part of the country would kick the arse of cheaters and liars and lazies like the leaders of the SEIU.
The American is for the INDIVIDUAL who has the courage to rise ... to work ... to give and to love their neighbor as they love themselves. It is for equal opportunity, equal justice and liberty. It carries no promise of equal pay! Happiness is more than money, which is a truth Dem's have mocked and stomped out of their lives.
I have never seen or heard a more unthankful unloving lying and now whining pack of wolves and backbiters as the Democrat Leaders and their supporters who will lie to keep the money they didn't earn flowing into their hands. You and your leaders are liars and scoundrels.
Keep on calling the Bush Years bad and terrible and maybe you will get a chance to see what a bad economy (see Zimbabwe) looks like.
I'm thankful right now for the good things we still have in America. For SOME honest judges and lawyers. For the folks who do have jobs, EVEN IF mine has gone away.
I'm thankful that all Democrats aren't liars like the posters here who rant on about how important the truth is to you and how you care for the poor.
Here's you some truth!
Truth is, I am a former union member; former Democrat; and while I don't believe the Republicans every word and there are some immoral people among them, they are a lot closer to the Freedom and Moral Clarity and sticking to the Constitution than anyone of you left-leanin' self righteous hypocrits! Keep Talkin'. America is about to undo everything the Dem's have done in the last two years and endure the hard times THAT will bring in order to preserve the US Constitutional Union. Failing that, were going to see if we can do it better alone.

If Obama's stimulus was so successful why does he want another one?

Whether you agree with Obama’s stimulus or not, all can agree that stimuli should be a federal spending bridge till the private sector investing and hiring can resume. The problem is that the President and Democrats never took the steps to make the private sector comfortable enough to hire and invest. Their tax and spend policies make investment more risky and less profitable but they tell the American people a different story, about how its not their fault, someone else is to blame, the world is not fair…..

And still Democrats continue to lie to themselves and the country.

They say Bush's policies drove the meltdown and the deficit but they ignore the fact that Bush repeatedly asked for stricter regulation of Fannie and Freddie. Barney Frank and Democrats repeatedly said that there was no risk to the housing market and that banks must lend to people who had no means to repay the loans, this caused the meltdown. The Democratic congress and Obama voted against stricter regulation of Fannie and Freddie and could not be bothered to regulate credit default swaps or strengthen banking regulation before the crash.

Democrats also kid themselves when they say the deficit is driven by Bush's wars. Clinton repeatedly said that Sadam had WMD and that regime change will likely be necessary. Clinton could have gotten Bin Laden but chose not to act, which contributed to 9/11. Democrats in congress voted to support the war. Obama made a political calculation that he could get elected president by opposing the wars, now hypocritically he continues spending on them.

To my Democratic friends please understand that everything Obama told you is probably a lie. Obama’s purpose is to pull as much of the private sector under government control as possible. The economy and jobs will never recover as people and businesses fear that Obama’s government will steal their wealth, as he took the wealth of bondholders in the Chrysler/GM takeover.

A narcissist who gave the Queen of England a20present from the United States --an iPod containing recordings of his own speeches.
A so-called Christian who officially declared “Pride Month” for a lifestyle that the Bible calls an abomination.
A man who wanted Americans to ignore his Muslim name during his election campaign, yet boasts of his Muslim name when he travels to Muslim countries.
A man who can name hundreds of America ’s shortcomings, yet none of its great accomplishments.
A President who claims the moral high ground by closing Gitmo yet supports the transfer of terror suspects to countries where horrific torture is certain.
A President who scoffed at being called a socialist yet acted to nationalize the auto industry, the banking industry, and the insurance industry . . .

I'm amazed at the stupidity and outright ignorance while reading the comments on this piece. First of all BDAINAL, your complete ignorance of how business works is a laugh. Lowering taxes enables businesses to expand and hire losers like you. To ruthella10 and bgreen2224, you need to study history and find out what happens when a Country is transformed to Socialism, run by a disrespecting President turned dictator. It's obvious by your comments you either are on the receiving end of Obama's "take from and give to" anti-American agenda. Obama is a lie, a anti-American, anti-business radical that will destroy this Country and if you think you will be spared by some area of his Hitler tactics, just wait. We are in trouble. His "global" dream for America ruled by him, is frightning. You are aiding him destroy our Country by supporting his socialist programs. Read "Rules for Radicals," and you will discover just how naive you are and where Obama wants to take our beloved Country or keep worshiping this terror of a President and eventually, you will find out who is right. Obama doesn't want the Republicans to work with him. He doesn't have any plans to bring this economy back. He is working only for it to fail. Study history and quit being so ignorant of the facts. Just wait until the new financial bill takes hold. Businesses will start failing right and left for lack of loans, and dear sweet ole Obama will be there to pick up their businesses to be run by the government. Wake up, Obama is a Marxist, not an American. Look it up. Look how many people were killed under Mao, Hitler, Lenin and Che. Obama and his WH flunkies all love these killers and think they are heros. Is that what you want? It's people like you two, and the elite media who refuse to print or speak the truth, that will make Obama's agenda easier. I hope you can explain your actions later. He's banking on people like you. If you love America, don't sit on your butt doing nothing. Pray to God to give you insight on how to stop the destruction of our Country before it's too late.

Obama has absolutely no class. He is not Presidential. He will criticize or demonize anyone for political points, true or not. I have never seen a President humiliate the Supreme Court sitting in front of him at a State of the Union Address, while they had to sit quietly. He is arrogant, and a liar. If you do something he disagrees with, he intimidates you. This is Chicago style politics at its worst, and true Americans are tired of it.

Good for you, Mr. President? News flash! You're not on the campaign trail anymore. You misunderstood your job from the start. You were elected president of the United States, not president of the Democratic party. The partisan split has been caused by you, not the "other" party.

Please take time to read it and then pass it on..
A brilliant summation regarding the great mystery of WHO IS BARACK OBAMA?
By Joe Crews and Harvey Wysong Wednesday, July 8, 2009
“It is a great pity when the one who should be the head figure is a mere figure head.”
-- Charles H. Spurgeon
Barack Obama is less of a person than an image — a brand. People see whatever they want as they do on a Rorschach test.
But does anyone really know him?
In fact, he is:
An empty suit.
A man with no birth certificate.
A man who was deserted in childhood by his biological father.
A man whose birth records, both in the United States and Kenya , are sealed by government order.
A man whose childhood mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, spied on U.S. military installations in Hawaii for the Soviet Union,
edited a communist newspaper, authored pornographic novels, and wrote poetry in praise of Joseph Stalin.
A man mentored by and still supported by radical Muslims.
A man who promised transparency in government, but has spent over a million dollars in legal fees hiding information
that would determine his eligibility to be President.
A former drug user.
A man whose academic records are sealed from kindergarten through law school.
A man who arrived in New York in June of 1981 without enough money to get a hotel room, but one month later flew to Indonesia and Pakistan .
Why did he go?
Who paid his expenses?
A man who traveled to Pakistan when it was illegal for U.S. citizens to do so. So what country’s passport did he use?
A man whose Law School Admission Test scores and grades at Columbia University are known to have been mediocre,
but was admitted to Harvard Law School through the intervention of a Saudi named Khalid al-Mansour.
A law review editor who never published an article in any law review.
A lawyer with no significant accomplishments in the law and no reputation in the legal community.
A former State and U.S. Senator, who never authored a piece of legislation.
A disciple of the Marxist Saul Alinsky.
A product of the Chicago political machine—the most corrupt political organization in America.
A man who selects Marxists, corrupt politicians, and criminals as his close political associates and personal friends.
A man whose presidential candidacy was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America,
the Socialist International, and the Workers International League.
A man lauded for the literary brilliance of two memoirs, both of which were ghostwritten by others.
A so-called Christian who says that knowing when human life begins is “above his pay-grade,” but somehow knows that abortion is permissible at any stage.
A man who thinks “waterboarding” is immoral, but that partial-birth abortion is moral.
A man who publicly laments slavery in America—which was abolished 150 years ago—but praises Islam.

Nothing is stupider than GOPers. They criticize stimulus money yet have no better ideas. Then, they show up at the back door of the Whitehouse and ask for a pocket full of cash but say "please don't tell anyone."

An Obama taxing and spending administration isn't going to go far puling out Michiganders as well as Detroit out of the pit of the poor economy. The stimulus package will have no long term effect on good jobs and an uptake in their economy. It is simple economic fact. A good shot in the arm would be giving business a good tax cut. That will go far and do more to create jobs and open up the economy in Michigan as well as elsewhere. Obama, in all his incompetance doesn't know his history. He is doing exactly what Roosevelt did during the depression. Roosevelts policies extended the depression much, muck longer then was necessary. Obama poor policies will drown Michiganders! Wake up people, taking from one group and giving to others is not sound economic policy, don't kid yourself!

Its sad to see the polarity, but I cannot fault the president for calling people out. The Republicans have made their bet: pretend to have a few Senators willing to negotiate on every bill, in the name of bipartisanship get the Dems to remove every meaningful change in the hope of getting one or two Republicans to go along, then turn on your Democratic negotiating partners in the bill and call the whole thing socialism and vote against it. That's their plan. Period.

There's absolutely no intellectual honesty from the Republicans anymore. I was once one of them. They have, however, lost their intellectual foundations and moral compass. They made, ironically, a deal with the devil when they courted the religious conservatives. They now routinely ignore and even denigrate scientific consensus while they infuse religion into their foreign policy objectives. It's disgusting as well as frightening. If you don't believe me, just close your eyes and imagine Sarah Palin in the oval office during a national security crisis. THAT's what passes for satisfactory competence in the Republican party today. The Tea Party COULD have been a new wave of credible conservatism. Sadly, they've gone even further than the John Birchers to the reactionary mode.

Democrats need to grow a pair and do what the president did today: call out Republican hypocrisy even harder. Prove your beliefs in your convictions by sticking to them.

As for me, I'd like a conservative party that I can relate to again. I don't see anything resembling one.

Sad.

Subsidy to businesses helps to create jobs because the business are incentivized to continue and grow in the area.

Typical Republican hypocrisy. You watch at some point the GOP will be taking credit for anything Obama did right. If the GOP had their way, anyone who isn't making $250k a year would be enslaved by the rich. They would make indentured servants out of all of us blaming us for our own misfortune.

When will the GOP constituents wake up and smell the mierda for chrissakes? We spent 8 years watching Bush et al start two wars and ruin the economy and they want to continue down that same road until we're all begging in the streets.

It's funny that a Republican can call the president a liar but if that same president calls them out for being hypocrites then he's somehow not being presidential though they thought it was presidential when Bush said "bring it on" to Al Qaida or was giving Angela Merkel a free back massage.

GOP is the same as it's been since McCarthy all hot air an no substance.

Here they are - the last true believers in the Cult of Obama. His "tax cut" rhetoric is a joke. Ridiculously targetd temporary cuts that have done nothing to help the economy. The majority of the stimulus just delayed the reckoning of the states for another year and inflated spending on all the pent-up items on the leftist Democrat agenda that's been building for over a decade. His budget projections call for deficits that are consistenly larger than Bush ever had (except the bailout year of 2009), and this combined with his hostility to business is a major drag on the economy right now. The man is consistenly un-presidential. Can you name a more partisan, ideological President? Worst President EVER, and our first that seems to loathe this country. November can't come soon enough.

Well, Hoekstra used to be a vice president of the company that I work for and they have laid off hundreds of workers. They are especially fond of letting people with 25 or more years go. In order to get severance you have to sign a paper saying you won't sue for age discrimination. So those are some of the values he seems to espouse. It isn't like we are losing money....they just want to keep the stockholders happy and they aren't happy unless Americans lose jobs.
