Emily's List 'Mama Grizzlies' attack Sarah Palin

The abortion rights advocacy group Emily's List has released a video showcasing women dressed in bear costumes speaking out against former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R).

The Emily's List video is part of a wider campaign to mobilize sympathetic voters. The associated Web site, sarahdoesntspeakforme.com, calls on visitors to sign a petition and donate to the group. A press release from the group outlined the impetus for the campaign:

"Throughout this cycle, Sarah Palin has predicted a rising tide of mothers and women voters who will support her so-called 'Mama Grizzly' candidates," said Emily's List President Stephanie Schriock. "Palin has made it her mission to defeat candidates who have worked hard to champion the rights of women and families across the country and replace them with conservative candidates who want to repeal health care, stand with big business, and eliminate a woman's right to choose.

Palin, who recently coined the term "Mama Grizzlies" in a Web video has weighed in with high-profile endorsements in House and Senate midterm primaries. The recipients of those endorsements have in some cases been Republican women -- women like South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley. Following an endorsement from Palin, Haley went on to win the Republican gubernatorial primary by a sizable margin.

The Susan B. Anthony's List, an organization that opposes abortion rights has issued a press release criticizing the video and its associated campaign:

"EMILY's List is running scared--and it shows," said Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser. "Clearly, in this 'Year of the Pro-Life Woman,' which Sarah Palin helped make possible, women have found their political voices. Pro-life 'Mama Grizzlies' represent the majority of women across the country.

The Emily's List campaign page is scheduled to expand to "feature a new multi-media interactive website, a page for users to share personal stories, and information about the radical agenda of Palin's candidates and where they stand on critical issues."

"... i agree with you on everything except the name calling of liberals. I am SICK with all these people taking "Liberal"or "Conservative" as an argument. But Otherwise, very nice argument!"

And I agree with you, wisefool13. The thing that concerns me most is that the general population accepts the fact that extremist groups on both sides of the fence represent the thoughts and wishes of the masses. Extremist liberals are considered Democrats and extremist conservatives are considered Republicans. When did these labels become main stream? We can, as a country, accept the fact that Islamic Extremists dont represent Islam. What is the difference. They are all just as destructive to our way of life. It is time for the masses to take back our country from all groups that don't represent us. Get rid of the labels and stop the division. A wise man once stated " A country divided can not stand".

what in the WORLD are some of you talking about? SEIU thugs going to people's houses and intimidating them? is this kind of like those FEMA trailers? (as in, not true in the slightest.)
or is it more like the birther nonsense. also not true in the slightest, and when it's disproven, you turn around and say it wasn't...oh, where's that birth certificate? here it is! oh, why oh why won't he just produce the birth certificate? um, here it is...it's been examined and vetted, here it is... oh, if he would just show us the birth certificate. hey, here's a birth certificate, and we'll raise you two birth announcements!!
where's the birth certificate? we just want to know...is the SEIU thing that kind of lie? or is this a new and different even more fun kind of lie?
THAT'S my problem with palin and the republican party in general. the lies, hoaxes and slander that just won't quit.

Mama grizzlies are called sows- just as mama pigs are. The bear and pig are actually closely related, which is why bear meat can carry trichinosis, just like pork can. Mama grizzlies will also kill their imperfect offspring after they are born so I don't think Sarah Paylin thought that one through very well before she chose them as her icon.

And this video doesn't speak for me - another Mama Grizzly.

They can put out all the false information they desire - they don't speak for me.

They can claim that Palin is for "taking away a woman's right to choose" when her stance is that it is a state's right issue and not a federal rights issues....you can fan fears of the uninformed and make them believe that in this day and age, we'd actually be able to do away entirely with abortion's legality. It won't happen...but it makes a good fear tactic by the other side doesn't it? Just like Republicans want to destroy Social Security and Medicare (while this administration cuts Medicare to pay for the expansion to Medicaid), or Republicans don't care about poor hungry children (while it is this administration that just took billions from the Food Stamp program to "keep police officers and teachers" employed - why is it always the police, firefighters and teachers they are "saving"? What about getting rid of some of the top level folks who make the real big bucks eh?)...

Those Mama Grizzlies have every right to not agree with Sarah, but they don't speak for me.

"Why don't you start by naming one Democrat endorsed by Sara Palin or by the Tea Party? Then you can continue by naming some conservative pro-life groups who did NOT support the candidacy of George W. Bush, you know, the supposed pro-life candidate who invaded Iraq, opposed health care benefits for children, and presided over the executions of a couple of hundred prisoners while governor of Texas. The truth is that sometimes Liberals and Liberal groups can be hypocritical but, believe me, we have nothing on you conservatives when it comes to hypocrisy. "

Well, I believe if you would actually pay attention, that the "conservative" pro life groups, Sara Palin and the Tea Party groups all claim to be CONSERVATIVE and not liberal. However this group claims to represent most women. I think that it is very accurate to call them LIBERAL DEMOCRATS and to say that they don't represent MOST WOMEN. Why don't they just admit to what they are. ALSO, to advocate baby killing but not hunting is just absurd. Are you really saying that killing a baby is not as bad as killing an animal??? Do animals matter more than HUMANS??? I just can't imagine where your head is. That is the problem with this country. I don't condone killing anything unless it is for food, and I don't think that abortion is for the good of man kind. Wake up people. This is the most evil thing that I could ever imagine. You all are really scary. And to think that people like you are running our country... I hope everyone wakes up and stops drinking the Koolaid.
PS.. Sorry but I had to correct your spelling in your original post.. must be a liberal public school education!

Say what you will but Palin is of the people. She may not be classy but she's a real woman with a real life and these Emily's List dingbats are pathetic. They may be "feminists" but they don't represent American women.

The witches on the List are for 'Choice'.

Palin 'chose' to resign her State job, maybe 100K/yr for what? A few $Millions/yr?

Tough 'choice', not.

Go, Sarah, go!

greatgran1 wrote: She is strong, articulate, congenial, classy, smart and experienced.

Strong? She resigned as governor complaining that she was burdened by frivolous ethics attacks.

Articulate? She uses words that don't exist and writes talking points in the palm of her hand.

Congenial? Attacks others at the drop of a hat. Remember the "death panel" lie? She actually signed a petition as governor advocating patient end of life discussions with their doctors and lawyers.

Classy? She rolled her eyes and was condescending to a woman who mentioned she was a teacher. Oh, and draping a bearskin over the couch in your office is the definition of "class".

Smart? See reference to 'articulate' above. Where did she learn to write little notes in the palm of her hand? High school? That couldn't have been the first time she did that. I'm betting she used that tactic to pass a quiz in school.

Experienced: I guess you could call a small-town mayor and half-term governor "experienced".

You do not represent me or those around me. I would be embarrassed to have you stand up for me. Your carry a message of hate and murder. You can sit there to promote the murder of an innocent child to appease the god of convenience. Stunning in this day and age when we can virtually view the fetus in the womb. How sad someone is so ignorant with all our modern technology! And to dress up like clowns in little suits would be humiliating. How sad. Your rudeness is beyond comprehension. No you do not speak for me or my children or my friends. Sarah Palin is a fine woman who has accomplished far more than the likes of you. She is articulate, kind, sharp, smart, experienced, frugal and refreshingly genuine while you are tasteless, classless and laughable if at all funny.

As a conservative, I love it when the women of the left get all in a tizzy whenever Sarah Palin's name is mentioned.

Why don't they get off the couch and run for School Board, or City Council, or even Governor? Then they wouldn't have to worry about so much cellulite.

And I've noticed that no one...no one... has named one conservative woman, or one who is just a Republican, who has been endorsed by Emilie's list.

Remember, Emilie's List first got into the spotlight by boosting Hillary Clinton.

I support Sarah's "Mama Grizzlies," those with less fat, the ones who don't kill their babies.

My question to the leaders of Emily's List and NOW follows.
The Republicans have nominated numerous ladies for public office! Are any of them going to receive your endorsement or are you only going to endorse the Democratic males who are their opposition?

First of all, you give yourself away by calling the candidates, ladies, an obsolete term that is generally used jokingly, or to address an audience paired the "gentlemen". Second, you could ask exactly the same question to the Susan B. Anthony group and I suspect would get the same answer. Both groups take stands on issues; they don't just automatically support a candidate, because of gender alone. Accordingly, I highly doubt if either group would support a woman who disagreed with their views on issues that involve women's rights.

She is strong, articulate, congenial, classy, smart and experienced. All those things and she is far more experienced than what we have in the WH today. "Can anyone here stick to the facts? and stop calling names, making stupid comments? Sarah Palin represents the conservative party, a faith based view point that believes in American Courage and Strength. and the founding fathers....."

First, "faith-based" assertions are not facts. Second, those of us who do not claim to have an inside track on the word of God also believe in American Courage and Strength and the founding fathers. And we disagree powerfully with Sarah Palin.

Just because she, and those who agree with her, say so does not make her more patriotic or correct.

Actually, the pesky facts have proved to be her undoing over and over and over again.

She is on the attack 24/7 with no thought to that poor motherless little child. She dragged him from pillar to post throughout her campaign for V.P. and, occasionally drags him out for the random Photo Op now and then. She is incapable of finishing anything she starts, as evidenced by her pitiful half term as Alaska's Governor. These women, evidently, see the REAL Sarah Palin. It's about time somebody repudiated her "Mother Theresa" facade.

A typical Post article. I almost fell out of my chair with one comment that accused the Republican party of being hateful. Obama sends his SEIU thugs to terrorize people in their own home. He wants a private ciliian army, so he uses SEIU thugs. He tries to shut down the radio talk shows, then claims the Constitutional rights of Muslims to build a Mosgue, like the hypocrite he is. What about the Constitutional guarantee of free speech? The Dumbocrats send hordes of so-called journalists to destroy Palin. The left-wing newspapers do all they can to destroy Palin, as does the TV media, and they all claim the Republicans are hateful. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Well, Sara is laughing all the way to the bank. You hatemongers are making her rich, powerful, and a force to be reckoned with. Thank you for that, baby killers.

Can anyone here stick to the facts? and stop calling names, making stupid comments?
Sarah Palin represents the conservative party, a faith based view point that believes in American Courage and Strength. and the founding fathers.....and the constitution. If there is something you dont like about those points, make your comment, but lets stop acting like little spoiled brats.......and stick to intellectual comment.

That has to be about the dumbest thing I have seen this cycle. Not only do the women look pitifully stupid in those bear suits, what they have to say is also kind of idiotic.

Emily, I think you need to try again.

Posted by: joelinpdx | August 17, 2010 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Why does the Washington Post give Palin so much free publicity? I don't get it. She's a pretty face and an empty suit. A person with not enough conviction to finish her term as governor of Alaska yet people hang on her words!

Americans are awful desperate if their putting their hopes behind a woman who is basically nothing more than trailer park trash who can see Russia from her "front door" and is now worth millions thanks to the lemmings who eat up her nonsense like it's candy never questioning her motives (she's a gold digger) but the WaPost seems to be doing their best to give her credibility.

She used to rant on about "Soccer Moms" and they protested so now she's defaming mama grizzlies! Along with obesity stupidity in this country is becoming epidemic.

You forgot "and craziest", Mona. I think Jon Stewart and Bill Maher would literally weep if this never-ending wellspring of unintentional comedy were ever to end. Right-wingers are, literally, crazy!

Just because Democrats obsess over everything Sarah Palin does doesn't make her relevant.

What makes her relevant is headlining the Obama Presidency's own blog.

Sarah Palin is clearly Obama's puppetmaster.

Why don't you start by naming one Democrat endorsed by Sara Palin or by the Tea Party? Then you can continue by naming some conservative pro-life groups who did NOT support the candidacy of George W. Bush, you know, the supposed pro-life candidate who invaded Iraq, opposed health care benefits for children, and presided over the executions of a couple of hundred prisoners while governor of Texas. The truth is that sometimes Liberals and Liberal groups can be hypocritical but, beleive me, we have nothing on you conservatives when it comes to hypocrisy.

So which is it, jckdoors, mama grizzly or Emilie?

Posted by: jiji1 | August 17, 2010 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Not to break the flow or anything, but I thought I'd throw in a random comment about the actual topic.

The video is an attempt to motivate the Emily's List base and I think it is pretty much of a fail. It certainly is for reaching any wider audience. It tries hard to be clever and cute but I just don't think it works very well. Maybe they would have been better off working the image of the bear trap. You know, a bunch of mama grizzlies with their legs stuck in a trap labeled "unemployment" or "no health insurance" or something.

The bigger issue is that this kind of think completely legitimizes SPs campaign. "Mama Grizzlies" are now a force to be reckoned with, according to the opposition. Pretty bad tactics, I think.

"One of the very best things about being a Democrat is that you don't have to pretend that SP is a genius ..............or relevant."

But SP is relevant. This very ad proves it. She's now officially setting some of the terms of the debate, no?

Liberals are not scared of Palin. We're just amazed at those that follow and listen to this self-serving, self-important huckster. She found her marks and is laughing all the way to the bank with your money. She's entertainment, that's all. And, poor entertainment at that.

I remember you in high school with your pack of cigarettes wrapped in the sleeve of your tshirt, your greasy ducktail, and your too-long jeans rolled up at the bottoms. I remember how you loved to bully the girls and other students. I remember you were nothing but a piece of sh*t, and everyone else thought so too. I see nothing has changed.

In today's episode of Soap Opera Sarah, Levi, on-again-off-again-son-in-law, soft-porn-star and father of Sarah's grandson thanks to failed Huckabee "Abstinence Education " is elected dog catcher of Wasallia as part of a reality show and absconds with Sarah's family dog Daisy while her evil liberal neighbor dances in delight.

Perturbed the incident distracts Sarah from writing on her arms remarks for Elder Beck's rally to piss off blacks, Sarah strikes out by having her Alaska Trooper friends pull Levi over for a busted tail light.

It's garbage day in Wasallia and Todd surrenders to Sarah's demands he take it out this week after she was caught on video last week with her hair in curlers and green avocado cream covering her face.

Meanwhile liberal, non-beliver, bedwetting, gay, Muslim-Mexican citizens continue to protest in front of her house to compell her to produce little Trig's birth certificate for once and for all.

Details tomorrow on Fox & Friends.

"Pro-life 'Mama Grizzlies' represent the majority of women across the country."

Ms. Dannenfelser made that up, no?

Posted by: vigor | August 17, 2010 2:58 PM | Report abuse

At first I thought who would pay attention to a woman with the intellect of a badly informed valley girl? Granted she is a cunning self promoter but that only works when there are people willing to be so shamelessly manipulated. How can anyone think she is capable of doing the job of President?

Calling her "people" mama grizzlies particularly annoys me because she had a grizzly pelt on the back of her couch in the Governor's office and was head of the only state to allow shooting grizzlies from the air.

The Republican Party has become the home to the most angry and hateful people I have ever seen in politics. The fringe is now mainstream or the mainstream is now the fringe. All I can do is hope that independents will wake up to the chaos that will occur if these people are re-elected in majority.

Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser cannot stand to hear the truth. She does not represent a "majority" of women but the truth never stopped her organization before. Sarah Palin is a loopy showperson who is making a fortune off of fools stupid enough to pay her to spout her venom.
