Lawmaker jokes about Palin's death, resigns

New Hampshire state Rep. Timothy Horrigan (D) resigned on Thursday over a joke regarding former Alaska governor Sarah Palin's death.

Horrigan made the remarks on his Facebook page Wednesday:

Just for the record, I don't wish Sarah Palin dead... but not merely for compassionate reasons. I also want her to live because a living Sarah Palin is less dangerous than a dead one. Her rise to the status of Head Tea Partier had nothing to do with anything she ever said, did or accomplished--- but as long as she lives she might be able to say or do things which could serve as a moderating influence. And she also might commit a gaffe bad enough to shock her followers, though that is unlikely. Unless of course she endorses Obama for President in 2012.

The social networking site still lists Horrigan as a state representative. But that's no longer the case, since less than 24 hours after posting to Facebook, Horrigan sent a formal letter of resignation to state House Speaker Terie Norelli:

I wish to resign from the House of Representatives effective immediately, and to discontinue my re-election campaign for Strafford County District 7. I apologize for thoughtless remarks I made which have brought this House into disrepute. I enjoyed my time in the House and I thank you personally for your support over the years.

Horrigan was on Facebook again Thursday afternoon -- this time to post an apology specifically mentioning Palin and the nature of his remarks:

I would like to offer a specific apology for making comments about Sarah Palin which could be--- and were--- misconstrued. She is, as far as I know, not a bad person at all--- and certainly she deserves to live a long and happy life.

Horrigan is not to be confused with another New Hampshire Democrat, state House candidate Keith Halloran, who posted to Facebook that he wished Palin and her daughter's ex-fiance, Levi Johnston, were aboard the downed plane that claimed the life of former Republican Senator Ted Stevens.

RE: The posting by "Clawrence12" concerning "plucky3"....."that assumes that Obama is legally President." Why, oh why, does this continue to ASTOUND me?!?!? ENRAGE me?!?!? HORRIFY me?!?!?! The sheer lunacy of these imbeciles, however, does continue to stun me. If there are any "Simpson's" fans out there...this is like "Cletus and Brandine" on STEROIDS!!!! "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"?!?! No knowledge, nay, ignorant buffoonery is a terrifying thing and sadly, there still seems to be plenty of it around. Anyone care to "refudiate" me?!?!? Thanks again for that word, Sarah. That one singular imbecilic word sums up so much...so very, very much.

The claims that opposition Obama's POLICIES is hatred is strictly a political ploy. I don't know anyone who hates Obama, but I know many who hate his progressive agenda. Get it straight.

The media has to take responsibility for the Palin bashing articles published day in and day out for the entertainment of and feeding frenzy for the liberal public. These two morons just jumped on the bandwagon. WaPo, The NY Times and msnbc,in particular, have declared open season on Palin and her family.

Clawrence12: I reread your comment. I guess from your comment that you do wish Obama dead. Innuendo, very good. I don't wish Sarah Palin dead or Obama and I don't have to use innuendo. I just say it. Hate and prejudice is wrong from both sides.

Some of you should reread the article. Horrigan is NOT a Rep. in the House of Rep. in Washington. He is or was a State Representative.

It's certainly not the "same" (I don't even wish Obama dead) unless you think that Palin wasn't born in Idaho.

Someone asked why so many Democrats hate Sarah Palin so much that they would wish her dead. My answer is: the same so many Republicans hate B. Obama and wish him dead. Both sides are wrong.

For a few of you folks who seem to be missing a point, He is a STATE rep in NH, hardly has anything to do with Obama, or the Media, or congress or whatever else you feel like fuming about today. He is alluding to Palin dying, it is not a death threat or death wish and is a mostly harmless statement. He should not have resigned, spineless move in my opinion. If we base the merits of a party on a sole minor member, all right wingers could be described as racist closet homosexual pedophiles. Keith Halloran should have resigned as well. If it were Republicans who made these statements there would have been an uproar in the Liberal Mainstream Media. There is a double standand. Dems get away with anything, while conservatives get excoriated. The "main stream" media has been idolizing and covering for Obama, and never tell the truth. Americans are wising up to the fact that we have a biased media, except for Fox news.

Why do so many Democrats hate Sara Palin so much? TWO wishing her demise just in one small state. No telling how many other Democrats across the nation share their sentiments.

I'm NOT a Republican. And I think Palin would be a better president than Obama ... which isn't saying very much. But I still DON'T want
Palin in the White House.

My first choice to replace Obama would be Allen West. Followed by Chris Christie, Tom McClintock, maybe even Jan Brewer [who I know wouldn't give the illegals amnesty or anything else besides stiff fines and deportation if she was president].

I've a sneaking suspicion that JohnSpek might be right. The man may have had other reasons for resigning, and found this incident to be a useful public excuse... he may have even intended to do that before he uttered whatever jibe has thus been elevated so far beyond its own actual significance.

Otherwise: a bad joke about Sarah Palin is deemed to have "brought disrepute upon the House"? Oh, really? I'd think one would have to try MUCH harder to accomplish anything sufficiently loathsome to do that.

What! Resign - whatever for? He didn't say he wanted her dead, nor did he state a way to accomplish her death. Unlike the math teacher in Jefferson County Alabama who gave math 'lessons' to his class on how to shoot President Obama and the best angles to use! That teaching idiot didn't lose his job - I mean teaching the best way to shoot at the President? How horrific! Where's was the uproar for this and why didn't it become front page. Naw Horrigan should just stay in office - make his apologies for the Thin-Skinned-Palin Group and be done with it.

At the risk of appearing "violent" and "evil", which of course is how all the rest of the world appears to paranoid, superstitious, self-righteous, self-pitying, gun-totin' RW nut-jobs, now known as the Republican Teabag Party (noting in passing that the original Boston Tea Party was a violent destruction of property), I will offer my wishes for a long and healthy life for Ms. Palin.

The RWers keep saying that they will “remember” in November. It seems they can’t even remember the last two such Novembers. After the next one they will not remember what hit them. Their new name, post November ’12, will be the Republican Iced-tea Party. To help them remember this, they should sew labels in their jackets with their party’s new initials: R.I.P.

Sarah Palin is the poster child for the Republican Southern Strategy. The Rupublican Party exploits race. Palin is their 'in-house racist'. A party that is getting more racist daily with the approval of many Americans. They are drowning in their hate for the President because he is black.

Everyone should stop ignoring the elephant in the room --racism. Just because the Republicans are not calling blacks N@#*rs in public --does not mean they are not racists. They are using code words as their racial dog whistles. We all recognize them, we know them because we have lived in America and know her history.
Palin pretends to be ignorant, but she's very schooled in racism.
It is no need for her to die. However, people should know and say that she is a racist. They also should consider her character. How many mothers would have accepted a Vice-President position knowing that their teenage daughter was pregnant and would be held up to ridicule? And she must have known that she was not intellectually prepared for that position.
She will always have an audience in America. She appeals to racists fears that they are losing privileges. She also offers a danger to the President with her remarks. Her words whip up the frothing, angry, scared, xenophobic rabid racists that might just do something about their hate.
She's a piece of work, alright!

Whether we're talking about Horrigan or Halloran the mind set of these liberal progressives is disgusting. When you have no depth and your ideas are mere pandering some people resort to this level of discourse. The embarrassing thing is whether these reps are paid $100 or not the people of New Hampshire somehow allowed these two (and others like them) to rise to the level of representing them. Shameful lowering of standards that tears down the history of this once fine state.

I am with you steve5..... they should take everything away from him for making such a insensitive statement and then resigning... your outrage is warranted... seriously though... New Hampshire State representatives are essentially a volunteer legislature. They have not had a pay raise since the late 1800's and make just $100 a year... So that's what that joke cost him...... a little expensive to make fun of the intellectual giant of the right... Best thing the republicans can do is stop being so "outraged" when someone makes an off color comment about their leadership, and start looking to leaders that are not so easy to make fun of....

No, he should not have resigned. Apologized? Yes. Which he did. Palin is on of those "freaks of nature" that, hopefully, we won't see the likes of again for a long, long time. She will NEVER be President, or even get as close (WHEW!!!!) as she did a few years ago. Just not gonna happen. She can remain with Fox, write as many books as she pleases and generally make a fool of herself ever time she expresses an opinion but that's all it's ever going to be. "Queen of the Tea Party" or not...she'll never hold a serious elected office again. I'd sooner see Levi Johnston as a State Senator........LOL!!
Seriously, I don't wish anyone dead, including Palin, but perhaps she could just fade into obscurity......yeah, right!
There's money to be made pandering to the extreme right-wing and nobody panders better than old Sarah.

Palin is probably more valuable to Democrats alive, rather than dead. At least she provides a face to point to, when giving examples of just how nutty the Republican Party has become. I agree the woman is disgusting to look at and even more disgusting to listen to. So, I don't. Now, if the MSM would quit letting Fox News provide them with their news feeds, we'd all be a lot better off. Obama/Biden 2012.

This tells us that democrats in the New Hampshire legislature have consciences. Compare this to Sharron Angle in Nevada who is calling for people to take up arms and use their 2d Amendment rights and at the end says that we need to take out Harry Reid...and no one blinks an eye in this country at such talk because that is just who the repubs have become(talking crazy). At a rally today I saw my first Tea Party/Republican who really believes in free speech--he used a bull horn to try to talk over every Colorado rep that was speaking...I guess Tea Partiers/Republicans only believe in free speech-for themselves and have no respect for anyone else. Abraham Lincoln is rolling in his grave at what his party has become.

I am a liberal, I do not hate anybody, you appear to hate everybody, particularly those who are not just like you. I am not lazy, why do you wish to live, and profit, off the backs of other people's labor and hard work, skimming off the profits of another's productivity. America is not a conformist society, as you would wish, get used to it. If it ever becomes a conformist society, it will cease to exist as it was envisioned.

If you would like some info on which party has run up the debt, it is the GOP. But then, you do not deal very well with facts. Actually you love facts, excedpt for those which contradict your pre-concieved opinions( which you probably recieved from somebody else, like the gospel truth). You also love the Constitution, except for those parts you wish to repeal. You love the government, except when it helps another you do not like. Why are tax cuts, which do not produce jobs, but do inrease the debt Ok in your book. But, but, but,..but, that's different. You are walking inconsistencies, and you do not even see it, hypocrite,

Why do you have such a need to demonize others, could it be so that you can feel more self-righteous, more justified, when you inflict intentional injury upon them? Does it allow you to then feel, in your rationalizations, to blame them for your own abhorent actions, because "they" deserved it. Get some counselling, and get some self-esteem. Get some self-estem that is not dependent upon denigrating others.

Take care, best wishes, and have a good day.

The Tide is turning and the leftists and socialists are being exposed and removed. The bad results of the 2008 election have truned out to be a good thing, as American has now seen first hand what happens when socialists and leftist take over the US government......and it will be decades before Americans make the same mistake again!

Though I don't want Palin to die, either: she's the best thing the Democrats have going for them, and the greatest comedy act since the Three Stooges or the Jerry Springer Show.

Pelosi talked about cleaning up the swamp ....this resignation is a start, followed by Rangel and Waters being dismissed and the elmination of many Democrats in the midterms.

I bet Nancy didn't think cleaning up the swamp meant sending all the Democrats home for good!

Why is honesty (telling the truth) always seen as a firing offense for a politician? I agree completely with the poster who asked Rep. Horrigan to withdraw his resignation. Why did he resign and why did he apologize??? Palin did not deserve an apology and I think that it is correct that she would become some kind of wing nut martyr if she was done in. Palin has never shown the least amount of insight or remorse for anything she has ever said. Insight is beyond her. I mean she writes on her hand to know what to say!

No ifs ands or buts but Sarah Palin is a demagogue. She represents the absolute worst in the souls of mankind and she deserves every negative word she gets in the media and ten times more on top of that. Palin is the best thing the Democrats have going now with her espousing her insane theories and making her snarky, despicable and dishonest comments whenever someone waves cash in front of her face.

That Republicans would value this crass, conniving, venial, vapid airhead indicates the direction that the Republican party is headed.

If you don't want this country to get flushed down a Republican toilet of unlimited deficit spending on unnecessary foreign wars, YOU BETTER VOTE DEMOCRATIC IN THE NEXT ELECTION.

From what I read, he didn't wish her dead. He even said she was MORE DANGEROUS dead. I guess he resigned because he felt that it was like saying bomb on an airplane. How many times have teabaggers and GOP members mentioned Obama and death in the same sentence? It happens.

At any rate, I would prefer a deceased Sarah Palin - preferably one that dies at the hands of a teabagger mob, it could be an accident by gun or something. That way, they can't make it an Obama conspiracy or some liberal thing. Deceased or just disappeared, like Dubya. That's about the only good thing about Bush - he's kept out of sight for the most part since he left office. Sarah Palin is a know-nothing instigator like most people on the right.

As for Halloran, I actually wished the same thing, too. 2-for-1. Funny thing is, if Stevens were in jail, he probably would still be alive.

I never understand why people apologize for offending Sarah Palin. How many things has she said and done and never apologized? I'm offended that she's an American. Fortunately, she realized how much of a disgrace she was to the state of Alaska and already resigned from her position, so we're already done with that formality. Or it's because she decided to be a shill. Either way she's a dumb w__re.

Like to spend other people’s money? You like to hate guns and are afraid of them? How about disliking the founding fathers? You hate Jews and Israel? You like black people as democratic pets? You think more and more government is the answer because you get more free stuff from the labor of others? How about you don't have to hold a job and working taxpayers will look after you? Your need government run healthcare because a nice car, plasma TV and a cell phone are more important than health insurance payments, so let working people pay for your health care? Paying your fair share of taxes are for other people, not you? Or is it that you think the American flag is just a piece of colored cloth? You like to think that 12-15 trillion dollar debt are just fine, no problem? Liberalism is a true disease and you need help.

The point is...it seems like it is almost always people on the left who wish death or pain on other people. What is wrong with them? You have to admit that it is rather demented and sick to wish death on another person who never did anything to them. Just because you have a different ideology, doesn't mean that it is right to say something so sick. Disagree on issues--that is fine. But to wish death on someone just because you don't like their politics?? That is pure insanity or just plain evil.

If or when she becomes a serious candidate for political office, that would be the time to join the angry and absurd chorus of cross-party political criticism.

Civility over political differences is too much to be expected. But, accuracy and a degree of common sense would be nice.

It's the Democrats' eagerness to throw anyone to the Republican wolves in the hopes that it will appease them. See: Shirley Sherrod, Dawn Johnsen, Christine Romer, etc. Meanwhile the GOP successfully fights to let Larry Craig finish his term, and David Vitter is STILL a Senator 3 years after admitting to hiring prostitutes.
