Obama to speak to troops, nation next week on Iraq

By Scott Wilson

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. -- President Obama will travel Tuesday to an army post in Texas to mark the end of U.S. combat operations in Iraq, the White House announced.

Obama will follow his visit to Fort Bliss, home to several combat units that have fought in Iraq since the 2003 invasion, with a prime-time Oval Office address Tuesday evening.

The pair of remarks on Iraq, a war Obama opposed, culminates a month-long White House effort to inform the public of the changing U.S. mission in Iraq and to take credit for bringing the U.S. role in the conflict to an end.

The number of U.S. troops in Iraq dipped below 50,000 earlier this week, and as of Sept. 1, those forces that remain will serve in an advisory role to the Iraqi military.

Obama set Aug. 31, 2010, as the deadline for ending the U.S. combat role a few months after taking office. Administration officials say U.S. forces will continue to assist Iraqi troops in anti-terrorist operations.
Under the terms of the status-of-forces agreement that the Bush administration reached with the Iraqi government, all U.S. troops are scheduled to leave Iraq by the end of next year.

Obama has a busy week of Middle East policy work waiting for him when he returns from his 10-day vacation here on Martha's Vineyard.

The stormy weather lifted a bit Wednesday, and the Obamas went out for a shrimp lunch at Nancy's, a popular restaurant in Oak Bluffs.

Shouted a question about Iraq by the pool of reporters with him, Obama said with a smile, "We're buying shrimp, guys. C'mon."

The first couple dined out the previous evening as well, at the restaurant State Road with Washington power broker Vernon Jordan and his wife Ann Jordan, among others.

Obama hit the golf course after lunch Wednesday, hoping to squeeze in a few holes at the public Mink Meadows Golf Club before more rain rolled in.

I will boycott his speech and let the news stations know why. I can see right through this president of "TRANSPARENCY". He is transparent in his lack to do anything about the invasion of undocumented illegals through our borders, by land and by sea. He sues Arizona for attempting to protect the legal citizens. He bashes the United States to the UN on Human Rights. He takes vacations while many American families are struggling to hold on. Many of them could COULD NOT AFFORD the $4800.00 coat Michelle Obama purchased from a designer in the UK. He invites illegals to come to the US in his speech stating "immigration reform/Amnesty" And to top it off, will allow them to obtain Health Care Reform once he makes them legal citizens. Many want him to stay on permanent vacation. Hope he resigns and saves Americans from the Impeachment process.

IRAQ ADDRESS SHOULD UNDERSCORE RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE, OPPOSITION TO TORTURE OF ALL TYPES -- INCLUDING SILENT ELECTROMAGNETIC TORTURE OF AMERICANS HERE AT HOME

POTUS should note the nexus between U.S. efforts to support the ability of Iraq to govern and defend itself and America's tradition of tolerance and religious freedom for all.

Reinforce the point that the U.S. is (no longer?) on a mid-East crusade against the infidels, and that America must demonstrate its values at home as well as abroad by not succumbing to fear and intolerance.

In other words: the topic is Iraq, but Obama should leverage the opportunity to affirm his ORIGINAL statement about the construction of an Islamic community center and mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.

Take a stand, Mr. President -- not only on the mosque issue, but on your pledge that America does not torture -- and that includes electromagnetic microwave radio frequency torture that is inexplicably ONGOING under your administration:

Combat troops are **not** leaving Iraq. A division of the Armored Cavalry from Fort Hood is preparing to leave for Iraq this very week. They've simply been relabeled to not be "combat troops" -- though they're still going to be fighting and dying in Iraq (indeed US troop deaths in Iraq are up sharply this month).

The media -- as usual -- prefers to give us Obama-friendly propaganda, rather than educating and informing us.

I guess the Messiah... will get on the phone and ORDER the Taliban and the insurgents in Iraq to stop the bombing and stop killing Muslims in Iraq.

He will also FIRE all the American Generals in the Army and the Marines for not BOWING down and kissing his hand. He will very quickly establish Navy Admirals and Air Force Generals in Command on the ground AFTER he fires all those Generals for speaking their mind.

Unfortunately there are still 50,000 US troops in country. That will continue to be targets for the insurgents in Iraq.

I suspect that the Iraqi forces will be falling on their faces in the next six months... and Obama will have to either cut and run, or mobilize US forces again.

The 60 % of the population (good Muslims) will be made to suffer for his stupidity and wanting to SHOW the world that he is a peaceful loving Muslim will be the ones that pay the price.

Whoa and behold the Messiah when the insurgents start attacking US troops.

What Obama has failed to understand is that bomb blasts are carried out not by Iraqis but Iranians. Before pulling out the combat troops Obama should have made arrangements to monitor the Iraqi-Iranian border. Al-Qaeda and Talibans are trained in Tehran how to set off roadside bombs. Anyway, Iraq is not Vietnam and only fools will make this comparison. Baghdad is still in the hands of Americans. Americans have gained by controlling Iraqi oilfields which are crucial in future. There is also democracy in Iraq. Kurds in Iraq are having a separate State and a free government. So the war is not a failure. A strong President, after Obama leaves the White House, can use Iraq to control the Middle Eastern affairs.

Perhaps Obama can explain why the troops of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, based in Fort Hood, Texas, are quietly being sent to Iraq, if he is withdrawing our troops?

Oops, sorry. I forgot that these troops will be "trainers".

I doubt they will "train" the Iraqis how to drive M-1 tanks, since the Iraqis do no have such tanks.

Something smells in this Obama cookout.

Obama/Democrats prove how right-wing Democrats are, which means how they act for the benefit of Rich and Big corporations (Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Big Military, Big Banks, aka Wall Street gang) and Israel and NOT for the benefit of American people (Middle class) and thus what Utter Complete Lunatics Republicans are who are even to the right of the Dems.

After all consider these FACTs:

1. Obama/Dems ran on the promise of bringing about Universal Health Care
Something that EVERY European nation, Canada, in fact every developed nation has, including Israel the beloved nation of Republicans and right-wingers, but once in the office Obama/Dems spent 1 year debating a health care bill and at the end they passed a total Joke of a health care reform that it is neither Universal nor is it Nationalized.

2. Obama/Dems ran on the promise of ending the Iraq War
Instead they have adopted nearly the same EXACT policies as the Bush Admin regarding the Iraq War. They even kept in charge the same Sec of Defense (aka War), that is Gates, the same guy who was the Sec of War under Bush! Here they ran on the promise of quickly ending the Iraq war and once in the office they adopt the same exact war-mongering policies of Bush Admin!

Wish Obama would stay on vacation and SHUT UP!

He has had little to do with Iraq; and i probably making a huge mistake of telling the adversaries what he was going to do, and when he was going to do it!

Have an idea that he wants to take credit, and maybe send the Queen of England a new CD including this speech. Don't you know that she can hardly wait???

He is so egotistically loquacious, he has become an embarrassment!

It would be helpful if the President could frame this departure from Iraq, with the continuation of combat in Afghanistan and discuss how this impacts the nation's fiscal health and the need to share the burden with our rich and well endowed but unburdened wealthy.

there was no Iraq War started in '03, it was the Invasion of Iraq. Quit calling it a war, Congress never declared WAR. and why does every speech have to be about the economy/and or jobs? isn't the troops coming home a couple of weeks early a good thing to talk about? next it will be your complaint why isn't he talking more about the Gulf?
like most of you would even believe what he had to say even if he had clear proof. you can't hear him over the shouting points coming from stage right.

But, Why is The Anti-Christ Obama Destroying America. If you truly want to know what is going on; Then you will have to accept these things as the TRUTH. Once you understand the following things; All things will be understood. So I tell you Obama is Satan on Earth, Lawless One, or what ever else you want to call this Demonic Figure. His words describe him, He is a False Hope, If you listen to him you will love him. He carries a Bow without an Arrow. He will conquer all through his speech, his false hoods will capture all who sit and listen to him.
2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

I think that making the speech is ill-advised.

Even though he is obliged to speak about the withdrawl of combat troops, he i stuck with the same problem that george bush had, there is no functioning iraqi government.

The Iraqi held their parliamentary elections in MARCH. it is now the end of AUGUST and there is still no Iraqi government.

Surge or no surge, democrat or republican, the iraqis can't lift themselves out of the pit of greed, corruption and religious and ethnic conflict to install a government after almost SIX MONTHS.

The Iranians must be laughing themselves sick while they implement their final takeover of their fellow Shiite province.

I can hardly wait for fibs to be told about how, thanks to the Wonderful generousity of the American Army, Every Iraqi now has a chicken in the Pot and a new Car in the Garage and Our Brave Soldiers sacrificed Their Lives so that the Iraqi's have a better Life. All absolute Hogwash. The real facts, 4 Million Refugees, 50% unemployment, over 50% living in slums, Hundreds of thousands dead, Homes and Businesses destroyed and the Country devastated, probably never to recover. We still have 50,000 heavely armed Troops, an overpowering Air Force, Permanant Bases forever or until We go broke and still not safe for even one of Our Soldiers to leave the Bases unarmed and in at least Platoon sized Groups. If Anyone can tell the American People that a Trillion of Our Dollars was spent for this kind of Victory and keep a straight face, They are an accomplished Liar and Phychopath. In America that qualifies You to be President. I read just Yesterday that electrical service to Baghdad is just 2 hours a Day except at the Green Zone and Invader Bases, far below prewar levels. What We have accomplished is total destruction, that's not Victory.

As the president walked around the restaurant in Martha’s Vineyard, some cordoned-off reporters shouted out to him questions, including one about the war in Iraq. Next Tuesday night, the president will deliver an Oval Office address at 8 pm ET, in which he will mark the occasion of the withdrawal of US combat troops from the country.

But the president was in no mood today to discuss the issue with reporters in that setting. He ignored questions for a bit, then turned to the reporters.

"We're buying shrimp, guys,” he said, smiling. “Come on." He's still on the BP payroll.

Barry, the fake, and Joe Bite Me are going around telling, whoever will listen, that Barry kept his word on Iraq, and the Afghanistan draw-down will be July 2011. In terms of Iraq, Barry, you may have kept your word, but the country is still a powdwe-keg.

Incidentally, Barry, why have you never visited Iraq, and why are you addressing the returning troops at Fort Bliss instaed of talking to thos tropps that are still in Iraq? Everyone knows that the returning troops will be reaasigned to Afghanistan, so they will still be in harms way, and the number of active duty personnel will not change, only their theater.

The weasel that you are Barry, ensured General McChrystal went away because he revealed to the world your ineptness as CIC. General Conway seems to think the same. Are you going to fire him too? Perhaps if you made an indepth study of Afghanistan by spending time there, instead of making a 5 hour fly-over in the middle of the night, and of all things, holding a troop review in total darkness, and then hurrying home so as not to miss the WH Easter Egg Hunt, you would have a better feel for the situation on the ground.

Barry, you are an absolute disgrace.

1st this statement by US Government and many in the Media that "Last US Combat Brigade Leaving Iraq Through Kuwait" is just another BOLD FACE LIE, like the Mountain of LIES that the US Government and Media have told American people and the World, since 50,000 US Troops are remaining behind in Iraq, allowed to shoot and Kill Iraqi's at will from land or air.

So just think what utter complete Lunatics Republicans are that they got us in this totally unnecessary War that has wasted $2Trillion of our money to date, set aside KILLED 5000 Americans and at least 250,000 Iraqis.

And what HOAXes Obama/Dem are who have continued with the same EXACT policies as Bush/Reps in this matter.

And that the KEY to this amazing sorry state of affairs is the US Media which is almost entirely a right-wing LYING machine.

And that according to the US (right-wing) Media, Republicans are going to Win BIG next November. So this means (most) American people are totally brain dead to Vote for the same Lunatic Republicans that got us into the totally unnecessary Iraq War!!!! WOW.

Iraq and Afghanistan are messes. I'm not sure why Obama would want to call attention to them. Although people like me who voted for Obama voted for change, it is hard to believe that the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan would be that much different than if McCain had won. He might have moved aggressively to bring these costly misadventures to a close, but he didn't. Our Iraq "withdraw" has been according to the time line set by the Status of Forces Agreement negotiated under the Bush administration. To meet the terms of SOFA also required a bit of "re-branding" troops. I frankly don't really want to hear anything he has to say about Iraq unless he happens to be announcing an acceleration of our withdrawal which is unlikely.
