Obama's latest joke: Republicans and cars

Update 5:15 p.m.

By Michael D. Shear
AUSTIN -- If President Obama loses his reelection bid in 2012, maybe he can find some work as a stand-up comedian.

At a fundraiser here, he trotted out his latest joke, chuckling as he told it. The punch line came after his usual story about refusing to give Republicans back the keys to the economy because they drove it into a ditch.

Speaking of cars, he said: "You want to go forward, what do you do? You put it in 'D.' When you go backward, what do you do? You put it in 'R.'"

Then, with another chuckle, he added: "I'm just sayin' that's not a coincidence."

If Obama quits his day job, he might want to credit his friend, Democratic Gov. Chet Culver of Iowa, who apparently came up with the quip a few months ago.

According to Yahoo News, the governor joked in mid-May that "all you need to know about who to vote for you learned in driver's ed: Put the state in 'D' [Democrat] to go forward or in 'R' [Republican] to go backwards."

If the Republicans win in November it is going to be BUSH PART 2. Here we go again another big mess to clean up after Republican rule and we still haven't cleaned up the first one from Bush....It is going to take years. Back to 750,000 jobs lost in a month under the Republicans....Here we go again America. Hang on.......

Makes sense.

Obama SAVED the economy from a second Great Depression, which 8 years of George W. Bush caused.

I choose "D".

Typical dumba$$ Democrat(D)! That can't be a coincidence either, can it? LOL!

All you need to do is look at the respective party mascots. The Democrats choose a Donkey, or a jacka$$. Whereas the Republican choose the elephant, one of the smartest animals on the planet! That is not a coincidence either!

The joke is on Obama. He brags like a teenager driving his dad's car.

Mr. Obama, the keys to the car and the car itself do not belong to you.

They belong to the American people and we will decide who drives the car and who doesn't. You have been driving reckless and drunk with power. We are about to ask for the keys back, big guy...

I see a lot of narrow minded Rush Limbaugh types on this post, spewing their ridiculous rhetoric. It is called "distractionism" and it is working wonders with a lot of small thinking big writing people. I mean how is where the 1st lady spends her free time and HER MONEY relevant to this economy? The Obamas and every democrat and congress could spend their last dollars domestically and it would not change the economy. Let the 1st family see the world. I love how the distractionist will grab onto any crumb to bring down a presidency. Well where do you think THE Bush clan spent their free time? Do you think the elder Bush never left this country? What about the Bush daughter's and Jeb? Gimme a break people. Focus on something besides the bottom of a cheap wine carton and maybe you'll find a job.

A lot of people would rather concentrate on the president's joke rather than the Republican Party's "do nothing attitude". The Republican's had more than enough time and influence to enact all the programs and changes they wanted when Bush was in office, yet they did nothing and now they want to say they have the answer. Well this whole fiasco is a joke and rather than taunt the sitting presidnet maybe congress could get off its collective ass and stimulate the economy. And when did it become the president's job to make sure everyone in America is working? The president is trying to stimulate the economy as best he can and all we hear is how Republican's can do things better. Well I admit the war is a mistake, not having a plan on immigration is a mistake, hell even the joke may have been a mistake but if the Republicans think all they have to do is nothing and block every effort to move forward then they are sadly mistaken. Sure there are many who want President Obama to fail because he is young, wity, not a Republican and for many narrow-minded people because he is black. but I think there is a growing majority of rational and sane Americans who want to see this president grow and with his victories the American way of life will prosper, and all the nay sayers can just stick their heads in a hole for another 4-years (Obama's 2nd term).

I just went through all the comments to this joke thing, and what I noticed is that only one Obama supporter committed a duplicate. All the rest were detractors, and there are many. They are doing what they do: saying the same thing over and over hoping that some people will think that if they hear it enough times it must be true. WHAT A SAD EXCUSE FOR ANALYTICAL THOUGHT.

Obama jokes that the Republicans drove the car into the ditch and now want the keys back and he's not going to give them the keys back. Well I've got news for him. We watched him drive the car from the ditch and over a cliff. The American public decides who drives the car, not him and in 2012 his license will be suspended.

In stead to listing what he has accomplished he continues to point the finger. I guess that's because unemployment is still at 9.5% will billions spent on the stimulus packages, the national debt is still mounting. Show us the plan that either the Democrats or the White House penned outlining the steps that need to be taken to move the economy in the right direction. What is the plan to regain the 10 million or more lost jobs? What is the plan to reduce the deficit? There is no clear plan. Mr. Obama has never articulated a clear path, a plan or even a guess as to what is needed to move things in the right direction. He just insists on throwing tax payer money at entitlement programs in the hope that the economy will right itself. He continues to grow the government at the tax payers’ expense by appointing more committees and individuals to study the situation. Mr. Obama is a consummate speaker who cannot put his words into action. Empty promises, missed deadlines and no clear plan for the economy is why he has to make jokes about the other party’s failures.

@Iam4gsus: So what was the deficit when W/Cheney took the reins? What? No deficit? A surplus? And, in a good economy, the Grand Old Party not only squandered a $250-Billion surplus but added almost $500-Billion in new, tax-cut-for-our-rich-friends deficit. Then they dug the deepest hole possible for our economy by deregulating banking or defunding the watchdogs. When Obama and the Democrats stepped in, we were already over the cliff and plummeting. The $1,400-Billion economic recovery costs can be attributed to the hole dug by W/Cheney & Co. You've been listening to Fox and the wingnuts. The tax-cuts-for-our-rich-friends GOP will never fix the nation's bottom line as long as they can mine the public coffers for their own venal purposes. Never have. Never will.

Judging by a lot of comments here, folks should try getting their news on line and from a variety of sources. Fox News is leading them down liars pass. For those who say that the economic mess left by the Bush administration is the fault of a Democratic led Congress in 2007 and 2008, I remind you; Bush was the President. Anything the Congress passed couldn't become law unless the President signed it. That bubble around 2006 that Republicans remember so fondly was the forerunner of the great recession that inevitably followed it. It was built on tricks, lies and gossamer cobwebs. The new manufacturing that the Obama administration is working to foster is built on American workers. That's a lot more solid foundation than unregulated Wall Street speculation.

Posted by: karela | August 10, 2010 9:37 AM | Report abuse

See a pattern. If you look at all the recent comment and probably since this article was posted, you'll notice that the conservatives are posting multiple times to make it look like there's plenty of them out there. Another deceitful trick on the part of Republicans in their effort to lie their way into power. They shouldn't be too confident as every special election since President Barack Obama took office between a Republican and a Democrat has been won by the Democrat, even in some of the most conservative areas of the country. Come November - SURPRISE!!!

It took years to destroy the economy and give the wealthy their tax holidays and let the corporations rape the people financially. Now, everyone thinks it's Obama's fault. You gotta be kidding! Get a grip on reality and look back at those 8 years Bush and company ran us into the ground and let Wall Street walk with all our money.

Posted by: joltinjo | August 10, 2010 9:26 AM | Report abuse

Funny joke and very accurate to given the damage done to our economy by the Bush tax cuts, fighting two wars on credit, doubling the federal debt from $5 Trillion to $10 Trillion, all of which occurred during the presidency of George W. Bush and while Congress was controlled by Republicans. From the comments seen here, it appears that a lot of you characters have very short memories. Or, like most conservatives, you are willing to believe and tell a lie, when it supports your position. Well, I, for one, was very tired of being lied to and seeing our country driven into the dirt under the economic policies of the Republicans. And, I'm certainly not willing to allow those same mistakes to be made again. I will vote Democratic across the board come November. Hopefully, the American people will have opened their eyes and see what the Republicans have planned for us, if they should somehow recapture Congress. Then, President Barack Obama would truly be our only hope to prevent the destruction of our country.

When Bush left office the Federal deficit was $161 billion.
With the new administration, the first deficit was $485 billion, and at the end of 2009 $1400 billion. Yep, I can hardly wait until the end of 2010.
Hmmm? Maybe going in reverse is not a bad idea, after all.
Let's see....D for DISTRUCTION of our country and driving over a cliff, or R for REVERSE AND REWIND. Let the records show, "I WILL TAKE 'R'."

Yup, it’s true. Put the car in "R" and go back to the economy, jobs and stock market we had in 2006, when the Republicans last controlled Congress. Or put it in "D" and go forward to higher deficits, bigger government and the declining economy and spiking unemployment we’ve had since the Democrats took over Congress in 2007.)

All American cars needed to succeed is equal quality opportunity with the Germans and Japanese. All that government money is helping them play catch-up.

Building cars in the crap-hole that is Detroit does not help the situation.

America builds its cars in one of the very worst cities in America. Why???

Do right wingers have brains? I'm beginning to doubt it. Honey, the TARP program was created by George Bush, and pushed and passed by the Republicans. Most of the money was given out before President Obama took office. What he has done that the Republicans never would have done is collect most of the money back, with interest from the banks that were bailed out. He also used TARP funds to help ordinary Americans and help repair the economy that was ruined by George Bush and the Republican ideologues.

I choose D for forward. Republicans had there chance and I lost trust and faith in the party and they have already stated they want to go in Reverse. What is so funny is that Bush and the Republican parties politics put most of you out of work and in the same unemployment lines as most of the minority people you have had hatred for. Republicans were bought out by corporate titans that careless about you and/or America they sent your good American jobs overseas to the very people that hate you. Question? Is it easy to undo decades of wrong - No!. But I will feel very very sorry when the next president you hope to elect do what Bush did (screw us). Give you a bunch or feel good pep talk maybe even pass a few worthy bills but do not finance them or support them like Bush did with No Child Left Behind and the Program for the Elderly.
I trust that if want to go forward (although it can be risky) it will likely happen in "D".

Hey, if putting it in 'R' means reversing out of the last year and a half disaster known as the Obama Administration, I'll take it - and so would most of the country at this point, including a large number of people who voted for him in 2008. In fact, let's "reverse" a bit farther to 2006 and get the Democrats out of control of Congress while we're at it.

If where we are is what he thinks of as "moving forward", then hell yes, let's "reverse" at top speed.

"I just flew in from DC and boy are my arms tired! But seriously, take my wife, please...."

*APPLAUSE sign flashes*

Going back to a time when our economy worked, we had jobs, we didn't borrow trillions of dollars from the Chinese to waste on Democrat pork projects, our allies liked us, and our enemies feared us?

I wonder if "brilliant" Obama has really though his analogy through completely.

Hey, Barry, that's so funny I forgot to laugh . . .
maybe "stand-up philosopher" isn't your gig . . .

Good grief! When will America wake up - this guy is the joke, not his pathetic attempt to laugh at the expense of the GOP.

That he actually thinks this is funny is indicative of his leadership(?).

Just remember Barry - you are going down in history as truly being the worst president in American history - yes, worse than the peanut farmer. . . .

I hate to point out the obvious but the keys are not yours Mr. Bigshot. The keys belong to the United States citizens and they shall decide who will have the keys. Your are not quite at your desired state of "KING"!

When you are heading for a cliff, reverse (R) would be the better gear, but instead Obama has a brick on the gas pedal as Michelle parties in Spain...

Really funny considering this guy is the biggest joke of a President we have ever had...what a disgrace!

Posted by: crazywater2 | August 9, 2010 4:43 PM | Report abuse

Obama keeps giving speeches where he sounds like a third rate comic on BET Def Comedy Jam. And it doesn't help that he goes on these trivial, junk shows like Letterman, Leno, and The View. Hey, jack@ss, you're president. Try acting like it.

Posted by: tweedburst | August 9, 2010 4:30 PM | Report abuse

R is for reverse as in the opposite direction of the cliff Obama is leading us towards...

R is for repeal of his hideous health care entitlement program that will lessen the quality of care and make it more expensive, all the while creating greater deficits for future generations...

R is for reality, something towards which the Poseur-in-Chief is headed on a collision course in November.

What of the driver who wishes to leave by putting the gear in R...but, oops, they haven't realized it's still in D when they put their foot on the gas...and much as the D people have done, they end up hitting the accelerator and driving right through the building, destroying everything in their path. As a matter of fact, November 2012 sounds like a great time to put this D into R and get him the heck out of office...at a high rate of speed.

So would you rather go back to 2006 before Democrats took over congress and unemployment was at 4.6% or go forward to after Democrats took over congress and employment is at 9.5%?

Would you rather go back before Democrats took over congress and the deficit was at $260 Billion or go forward to after Democrats took over Congress and the Presidency and the deficit is $1.6 Trillion?

The answer is obvious. Obama and the Democrats need to give back the keys.

They don't know how to drive!

Remember, "D" for Depression, "R" for Recovery.

Not to mention reverse gear is a great way to back out of a wrong turn. Just something the electorate may be thinking about right now.

Barry, your tricycle doesn't come with a stick shift, now go have Rahm and Axelrod explain to you how to pedal it.

Oh, they have big boy things to do now?

Well, go play with your legos then.

sounds suspiciously like a used card salesman

Posted by: dummypants | August 9, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Well if the car, like the economy, is going downhill towards a chasm then R all the way.

Posted by: mykpfsu | August 9, 2010 4:13 PM | Report abuse

Well seeing where D has taken us, I'm hoping & praying we shift into R and reverse out of it come November 2010 & 2012...

Makes sense.

Obama SAVED the economy from a second Great Depression, which 8 years of George W. Bush caused.

I choose "D".

Given where Obama has driven the country, it must be a self-deprecating joke.
