Sharron Angle: Press should 'ask the questions we want to answer'

By Matt DeLong

Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle gave a revealing interview Monday over the weekend to Fox News' Carl Cameron, in which she said that her campaign wanted the press to "be our friend."

"We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer, so that they report the news the way we want it reported."

Angle added that she would like it if the press would allow her to plug her Web site and solicit donations on the air. It's not the first time she's said that.

Her remarks clearly left Cameron flabbergasted, and prompted Fox Nation to run the headline, "Sharron Angle too honest in latest interview." National Review wrote up the appearance under the title, "Did she just say that out loud?"

Make no mistake. Ms. Angle and all her fundamentalist Christian friends want their own version of Sharia Law in the USA. It all starts with claiming that this be returned to a Christian Nation as the forefathers created it to be. Falwell's Liberty College is one of the many training grounds for these later day crusaders. Amuzing that Sin-State Nevada itself is breeding this scurge!

johnL1 said "All of these "hit pieces" on Sharron Angle, from all of these "main stream media" outlets.."

Her comments were made on Fox News. One could hardly characterize Fox News as a "main stream media outlet" that puts out "hit pieces" against Republicans. The stupidity of her comments would have received the same comments if that's the only place it was shown. Besides, she has been running away from questions from local Nevada media, even refusing to answer questions at a press conference that she called.

The purpose of the press is NOT to ask the questions that the politicians want to answer. If anything, their purpose is the exact opposite. We can't find out anything useful from politicians who only answer scripted questions with prepared answers. We need to see if they are able to think for themselves on their feet. Otherwise all we have is propaganda.

Angle's comment is not too surprising considering the fact that she wanted media answer the questions she wanted asked. It is liken to having a script handed to the interviewer so she can answer it. She is missing the entire point what democracy is about and the role the press plays in it.

Do you see the conservative posters here defending her! Isn't that a clue to their mind-set? God, Stupid people following after an idiot.

They are not ashamed, or amazed nor do they even disagree. What's more important than Angle's revealing honesty- is the transparent ignorance of the right-wing dufai that are following her.

Posted by: interactidiomas | August 4, 2010 12:22 PM | Report abuse

I cannot help but wonder: Is this what it means to be "conservative?" All the news that suits us - just print that?!?
This is such a glaring red flag and confirms my suspicion that the more rightwing "conservatives" do not, repeat not, want to deal with actual facts, and do not brook rational (not skewed ideologically) analysis of issues in the news. Everything MUST dovetail with their preconceived notions and talking points, or else it is just "enemy propaganda."
I don't believe one could have a face-to-face conversation with Sharron Angle and get her to appreciate these points. She (like how many other "conservatives") would simply put up a wall--and refuse to hear. And that is what is so dangerous about her and others like her.

excuse me I bet you think Sarah Palin is a mental giant a misunderstood "Einstein" why doesn't Sharon just start writing the answers in her palm ala Palin style

some people like Sharon Angle are just not "smart" enough to be a Congressman or Senator either way she is a "disaster" waiting to happen her policy positions should be enough to stop her from getting elected NO social security, no Medicare and no flouride in water yup she's right up there with all the "John Birchers" and I don't think anyone is ready to elect any of them to national office either

sometimes the status quo is better than the "alternative" and Senator Reid is better than a Senator Angle and even Nevadans are smart enough to see that

Senators make decisions that affect every American by their votes even in SC you will be affected by what she does and how she would vote but then you all in SC are used to idiot legislators what with Mark Sanford, Joe "you lie" Wilson and Jakey Knotts you are used to being embarrassed on a national level why don't you all persuade Ms Angle to move to SC and run against Lindsey Graham in 2012 you all deal with her

The problem is that wackos like Angle and Palin sit around with their sycophants, hangers-on and like-minded goobers talking nonsense and get nothing but agreement for their out-on-the-ledge views and opinions.

Then the hapless dopes come out into the real world and cannot understand why the same sentiments that won them applause from their sycophants, hangers-on and like-minded goobers are greeted with ridicule and laughter in the wider world.

I'd rather the press ask the questions the pols don't want to answer. Like, "What is the GOP plan to induce the economic growth this nation needs to recover from the recession, get the US out of debt, and do away with deficit spending?"

Anyone heard how the Republicans are going to do those things? I haven't. We already know how they accomplished the opposite of all of them though...

Good to know, thanks for pointing that out, otherwise, she-and her blithering lackeys-would be nothing more than the most easily-debunked of hypocrites.

Really, why do so many anti-Government types, like Angle, and loony-tunes Michelle Bachmann, insist on being a part of the same government they claim can't do anything right, then prove that point by taking elected office?

Most politicians ignore the questions they are asked and say what they want. Some are better at this than others. Sharron Angle is new at the political game -- she actually thinks she has a responsibility to answer the questions that are asked, so she hopes they will ask the ones that will help her get out her message.

Carl Cameron is surprised because he is usually interviewing professional politicians, not relative rookies like Angle. I think her naivety is charming, but I see that many of you think that makes her a fair target for ridicule. Apparently you would prefer a liar than someone who is honest to a fault.

"We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer, so that they report the news the way we want it reported." is what Angle wants from reporters.

Posted by: MarilynManson | August 3, 2010 2:37 PM | Report abuse

I'm no fan of Angle, but I think there's some real ambiguity here.

The post quotes her as saying "We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer, so that they report the news the way we want it reported." I'm not sure she said "we want to answer..." or "we want it answered..." (which isn't entirely grammatical but could just be a verbal stumble and sounds reasonable on the clip). If it's the latter, "we" could mean "we in the public" and not "we the politicians"--that the media should ask questions the public want answered and report the way the public wants reporting. If so, then the response takes on a different and much less self-serving meaning.

The plugging of her web site, of course, remains completely self-serving. And it is true that most of the media fails to ask hard questions in fear of losing their treasured "access." (What's the point of access if you don't get responses worth accessing?)

You might try fact checking some of the things FoxNews says instead of just blindly accepting what other networks say about them like you usually do. Gee, you might actually learn something. Try O'Reilly, he is a Moderate-Independent that is often attacked by those on the Right, so you shouldn't feel too threatened by him if you are really not a shill for the DNC. As far as FoxNews being critical of Republicans, they were very critical of Folley (sex scandal,) and John McCain and George Bush (illegal immigration) and Bush (Iraq), all in 2006. This criticism, by the way, helped the Dems regain control of Congress. If FNC was as bad as you say, they would have suppressed the stories like MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, NYT, WaPo, LAT usually do, but they didn't because they are more into truth than hackery. Progressives are desperately demonizing Angle, which is helping thinking Americans in Nevada understand that they must vote for Sharron Angle.

As a general rule, the more progressives demonize someone, the better that person is and the more that person will be able to help us defend ourselves -- and our children and grandchildren -- from Obama, Reid and Pelosi and their job-killing, economy-killing, freedom-killing scams like Obamacare and cap and trade.

Initially the lies and manipulation used by progressives to demonize Angle may work for them. However, the more people learn about what Sharron REALLY stands for and why, the more votes she will get.

The more progressives demonize Sharron Angle, the more votes Sharron Angle will eventually get.

The only jobs Reid and his comrades have created are ACORN-type government jobs, to be paid at our expense and at the expense of our children and grandchildren.

The "Republicans" have managed to select the most inexperienced, naive politician to go up against the Leader of the Senate who has the financial and personal backing of the entire Democratic party and a grateful President. You can expect the Reid campaign to trumpet every foul-up even if she knew the game -- The Democrats can dial back the money here -- the Republicans have again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I'd put Senator Reid's seat in the "safe" column even after helping his state become the job loss capitol of the nation. It is a good thing that the President is a very charismatic person that can charm and sway the masses, or his approval ratings would be down around 28 percent, which is much higher than he deserves. No big deal. The difference between Sharon Angle and Harry Reid is that she wants the press to tell the truth about her message instead of twisting what she has said into DNC talking points. Harry Reid wants the press to continue covering his butt by not reporting or mis-reporting his stupidities per their normal plan to protect Dems and smear Reps.

Posted by: DL13 | August 3, 2010 12:37 PM | Report abuse

It sounds like what she believes in is propaganda - she should feel right at home on Fox

"We wanted them to ask the questions we want to answer, so that they report the news the way we want it reported."

Posted by: FauxReal | August 3, 2010 12:30 PM | Report abuse

Ok so now you have "Angle" ... is that her name? She sounds a lot like that idiot Palin ... or is it palliative?

Sounds like they both need a laxative .. their mouths just keep running and running and running ...

Good luck to both of them as they and all the other republiCANTS drive in reverse ...

Posted by: PamelaN | August 3, 2010 12:28 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, keep calling her "extreme" and stupid.
Keep repeating it with your dominance of the popular culture and news media..
Maybe it will work, people will believe it if you keep saying it.
Any conservative is "stupid and extreme" to you just by definition, because you lean left, and you vote for Democrats (every time.)
I know you guys think if you all settle on one target at a time, and all call her the same names, it will work, and scare the ignorant masses away...
You have enormous power with your media, and you use it to further your ideology.
Good luck with that.

Do you reporters have any self-consciousness?
Do you realize just how obvious your agenda appears to the rest of us??
All of these "hit pieces" on Sharron Angle, from all of these "main stream media" outlets...
Hmmmm..
Wonder if it is important that Harry Reid keeps his job??
Wonder if you are trying to marginalize, demonize and destroy Angle???
HMMM

Just think DC'ers, Glenn Beck is bringing thousands of people with this level of intelligence to town later this month. Pass the popcorn.

Posted by: oldabandonedbeachhouse | August 3, 2010 12:11 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, right - just wait until Harry Reid mocks her with the same words to a reporter and see what FOX does with HIS rendition of that expression - and her advertising team - they'll be in their glory...

She really is that stupid!

She just wants the same media reporting as democrats. I don't see what the big deal is.

Posted by: Cryos | August 3, 2010 11:47 AM | Report abuse

Angle wants to violate FEC rules to get elected? She wants the press to be a part of her campaign?

The woman is an absolute idiot with no business running for higher office, never mind being elected the first time.

Harry Reid is so outrageously rotten and low that his own son is ashamed to use his last name. No wonder Sharon Angle is ahead of Reid even though she has made many verbal gaffes. At least she's human. I think Harry Reid is part of the lizard family like his brother Arlen Specter.

I wager that if Bozo the clown ran against Horrible Harry Reid, Bozo would be ahead in the polls too.

It's anybody but Harry time in Nevada and rightfully so.

Posted by: battleground51 | August 3, 2010 11:41 AM | Report abuse

Angle's point of view has to be, in part, a reflection of the fact that the mainstream media for so long have stopped reporting and are merely stenographers. If the now-exposed-as-wholly-corrupt Wyly brothers fund some crazed lunatics to lie about John Kerry's service in Vietnam, for example, the media have no obligation to separate fact from fiction -- just to report the Kerry Campaign's denial. If the bush administration wants to lie us into a war, as long as the media devote 10 percent of the coverage in the run-up to unnecessary war to quoting nay-sayers debunking the flakking of so-called "experts" whom we have now learned were on the Pentagon PR payroll, the media have done their stenographic duty. This is what Angle -- and the rest of the entire GOP -- want. Stenographers. Heck, they've already got it at Fox, Wash Times, Human Events, etc.

Love the Faux News(.com) headline.

Is she really too "honest" or is she just that damn stupid?

Posted by: hoos3014 | August 3, 2010 11:34 AM | Report abuse

She should just go that extra bit and say outloud "Why doesn't the media make me look better? It's their fault I look so bad."

I wonder what she would say if someone candidly sat her down to tell her how stupid she appears on a constant basis.

"My mom always told me I was cool!"

I usually think it's kind of inane to comment on an article by just typing 'wow', but....

Wow.

"Thanks" to the Tea Party, it looks like the Republican party will lose at least 3 seats they should have easily won- Nevada, Kentucky and Florida.

Posted by: Nightstalker1 | August 3, 2010 11:34 AM | Report abuse

So she basically wants the media to be completely in her pocket, I see.

Strangely, allegations that the mainstream media actively supports Obama over this opponents never ceases to anger the right. I wonder what those people would think of the media if they were to actually promote candidates like Angle over her opponents? Would they recognize the blatant hypocrisy or would they excuse it since its "one of ours and so it's okay"? My money is on the latter...

Posted by: cjpotter19 | August 3, 2010 11:32 AM | Report abuse

It's the mark of how really rotten Harry Reid is that someone like Angle could give him serious challenge. Reid is prime example #1 why Congress now has the lowest approval ratings in American history.

Congress has an 89% DISapproval amongst the American people.

Obama seems to be trying to catch up.

Posted by: battleground51 | August 3, 2010 11:30 AM | Report abuse

How inane....the press is supposed to be there to SERVER HER INTERESTS? What a nut job. If the State of Nevada elects this brainless half-wit they will deserve what they will get.

Posted by: bgiguere | August 3, 2010 11:29 AM | Report abuse

What is really sad is that there are many people who will vote for nutbag "Right" Angle no matter what moronic things she says, does, writes, agrees with, etc.

This is just the latest of many, many remarks by nutbag Angle that should conclusively foreclose anyone from voting for her.

Posted by: koolkat_1960 | August 3, 2010 11:29 AM | Report abuse

What a surprise, Angle's too cowardly to take on tough questions.

You WaPo people sure are trying to get Dirty Harry Reid re-elected to protect your beloved Democrat party this fall. That's obvious.

As for me, I would vote for Pee Wee Herman rather than vote for Rotten Reid.

Harry Reid deserves only defeat and humiliation and maybe tarring and feathering for his sniveling, Obama butt kissing, pork barrelling, political patisanship and low dealing ways.

He is the lowest of the low.

Except maybe for Arlen Specter.

Posted by: battleground51 | August 3, 2010 11:17 AM | Report abuse

The scariest part is that she is either ahead of, or close to, Reid in the polls.

She is the gift that keeps on giving....to Harry Reid's campaign war chest. Keep it up, Sharon!

Posted by: B-rod | August 3, 2010 11:02 AM | Report abuse

Are her mouth and brain connected? All she needs to do is keep talking and Reid will be home free. Honesty? Yes, I guess you could call it that.

Posted by: Aquarius1 | August 3, 2010 10:58 AM | Report abuse

That's what the commissars in the old Soviet Union thought. Come to think of it, Pravda (Truth) was a lot like Fox News (Fair and Balances).

Posted by: thebobbob | August 3, 2010 10:56 AM | Report abuse

The scarier part is this is the vision for Governance of this Country a majority of GOP voters in Nevada want, these people aren’t embarrassed by these types of comments, they are excited.
If elected it wouldn’t be her “Job” to do anything about unemployment in this Nation (though she ties Harry to it in Nevada) and Rand Paul doesn’t want the Feds involved with Mine Safety, these are but a few of the Gems that have the GOP base cheering.

Posted by: notthatdum | August 3, 2010 10:51 AM | Report abuse

If the people of Nevada vote this unqualified, uninteligent person in they will deserve the diaster they get.
