Carl Paladino to reporter: 'I'll take you out'

(This item has been updated since it was first posted.)

By Jason Horowitz

Did Carl Paladino just make a gigantic mistake?

The New York gubernatorial candidate got into an angry, expletive-filled exchange with one of the most influential reporters in the state when asked to back up claims that his Democratic opponent is having an affair.

"Do you have any evidence of the charge you made?" asked Fred Dicker of the New York Post.

"You'll get it at the appropriate time. You're not entitled to it," Paladino responded angrily. He said the Post had sent "goons" to his daughter's house -- apparently a reference to press coverage of his own extramarital affair and out-of-wedlock child.

When the reporter followed him, Paladino shouted, "I'll take you out."

"You'll take me out? How are you gonna do that? Are you threatening me?" Dicker responded. "Watch," Paladino said as he walked away.

Paladino's campaign manager, Michael Caputo, blocked Dicker from following the candidate and accused him of working for Democratic nominee Andrew Cuomo.

Watch:

Other New York politicians have criticized Dicker as a bully. But the New York Post is arguably the most powerful outlet a Republican politician has in New York politics. Paladino just physically threatened its top political reporter. While Dicker is very much his own brand within the Post and often takes his own line, it's hard to imagine the paper playing nice with a candidate who physically threatened one of their veteran reporters.

UPDATE: In a statement, Caputo again said Dicker was working with Cuomo and that the Post had put Paladino's daughter in danger.

The New York Post sent a photographer to the Buffalo home where Carl Paladino's 10-year-old daughter lives with her mother. This photographer attempted to take photos of the child through the windows and subsequently attempted to follow the girl to a playground.
We believe this conduct puts Carl Paladino's daughter in harm's way, susceptible to kidnapping or sexual predators. This behavior by The New York Post and their senior political editor Fred Dicker is unacceptable. Endangering the safety of a 10-year-old child is repugnant.
[...]
Fred Dicker is a mouthpiece for Andrew Cuomo, a man who is afraid to give the people the debate they deserve. His actions show his clear bias. Show me one reporter in the Capitol who would stand in Fred's defense and I'll show you someone who just got the job."

The Post's editor-in-chief responded:

"Paladino spokesman Michael Caputo's claim about our photographer is untrue. We can only assume Mr. Caputo is confusing our photographer with someone else. Mr. Caputo should check his facts before making charges against Post personnel. In addition, Mr. Paladino should not be surprised by the media's interest in his families, as he has invited public scrutiny of his personal life by running for governor and speaking openly about his mistress and love child."

Paladino is a pretty creepy guy...I knew this fact b4 the Dicker incident. He's good enough for the Tea Party, but not good enough for thinking people. Paladino has been making a lot of insinuations about Cuomo and has presented no evidence, although he has promised to do so. Not good enough. So it seems that Dicker was asking a reasonable question. You don't get to threaten *any* reporter, even if he/she is a bully.

If only the media would get in the face of Liberal Candidates such as they do with republicans. Why are they not as aggressive with Obama during the election? We still don't know much about that do nothing congressman from Il. We knew more about Joe the Plumber within 24 hours of his question to Obama then we know about Obama 24 months later. The media is corrupt. They cry about Fox news all by denying the liberal slant from 95% of the media in this country. Liberals suck and will get the AS$ whipping the deserve come November. Where is the story about Obama monitoring the internet? Liberals spent 8 years crying that they were losing their freedoms but are utterly silent on that issue. Many posters seem to be justifying a reporter following and trying to photograph a ten year old. Any ethical journalist/photographer would follow a "hands off" policy relating to a minor child.

Mr Paladino's mistake is thinking that he is fit to run for public office in the United States of America.

He has joined a very long list of people convinced that they must serve, but are in fact not serious candidates -- or people -- at all.
