Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer flounders at start and end of debate

UPDATE 9/3/10: Jan Brewer says she won't be participating in any more debates. The Arizona Daily Star reports:

Incumbent Republican Jan Brewer said Thursday she has no intention of participating in any more events with Democrat Terry Goddard. She said the only reason she debated him on Wednesday is she had to to qualify for more than $1.7 million in public funds for her campaign.
I don't believe that things come out in proper context in an adversarial atmosphere," she said. And Brewer said she is available for interviews.

Meanwhile, Brewer has recanted the beheadings claim that she avoided commenting on after the debate. (The governor had said on local television that "our law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert ... that have been beheaded.")

"That was an error, if I said that," she told reporters Friday.

Brewer said she was referring to beheadings in Mexico that could spread to the United States.

"I misspoke, but you know, let me be clear, I am concerned about the border region because it continues to be reported in Mexico that there's a lot of violence going on and we don't want that going into Arizona."

At last night's gubernatorial debate, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) appeared to be at a lost for words during her opening statement, leading to some long, awkward pauses:

Brewer also stumbled at the end of the debate, when her Democratic opponent confronted her on a past statement.

"What is hurting us right now economically are statements, false statements made by Jan Brewer, about how Arizona has become so violent, that we are a place of fear, and we have beheadings in the desert," said Arizona Attorney Gen. Terry Goddard. (Dana Milbank wrote about Brewer's beheading claim in July.) Goddard called on Brewer to renounce the claim. She ignored the question, and did so again when asked by reporters on her way out of the room. Finally, questioned by multiple reporters, she just turned and left.

Gov Brewer has vastly more supporters than detractors. Given the massive onslaught of criticism and vitriol from the underbelly of contemporary media - notably MSNBC, Salon, and Huff Po - it is quite likely she passed through a brief moment of fatigue and reflection. She appeared to have been laughing at her own thoughts possibly catching herself before saying something that would set off the hair trigger of progressive hysteria that they would use against her on the 24/7 cable cycle. The 16 second pause looked unremarkably human when viewed and will serve to endear her even more to her supporters as evidenced by significant contributions from all over the country to defend AZ's law against Eric Holder and the DOJ. Obama and Biden have complied gaffes sufficient to provide SNL material for months but we of course will never see much of that.

Hey boski, obviously you didn'tg see the debate. No one was heckling her or drowning her out. She just couldn't handle it. As for your hitler reference, wrong party. Watch any news show where there are both Dems and repubs featured. The Dem can never get a word in edgewise. The repub always runs his mouth even when it's the Dem's turn to answer. It's in the repub playbook and they have been doing it for years. So stop with the lies. Of course, you're probably a repub, so you can't help yourself.

I still can't shake the image of Jan Brewer with a coffee pot in her hand, asking me if I want white or wheat toast.

Arizonans need to evaluate who is running their state while Brewer acts as a figurehead. This woman is clearly underfilling the position.

Also the fact that she thinks she's too good to debate her opponent and only did so for money. She and the other neo-cons are all behaving in this same pathetic way.

Brewer was not chosen by the people of Arizona. She is nothing but an ignorant wanna be and takes pleasure in control of this state. The woman lie's. She refuses to dicuss anything that may paint her in an accurate light. Not only should she be held accountable for her false claims regarding headless bodies but also for the fact that people in positions of influence on her have direct ties to the private prisons here in Arizona! When one television station started to investgate these connections, she being the fool she is, pulled all ads for her election from said station. Now she responds to her show of pure stupid with the announcement that she will participate in no more debates. It reminds me of a spoiled brat packing up her Barbies and going home. Please prove to me that we have enough grown up, intelligent people here to see to it she is not elected!

Who cares who is governor of Arizona? No one will go there anymore. If not Hispanic onself, and so not in danger of being arrested there, then for the same reason people used to avoid the South in the days of Jim Crow. It's unpleasant to be in a place hwere people are treated so. My daughter-in-law's parents emigrated from South Africa before the end of apartheid because they thought it was a morally bankrupt society and they didn't want their children growing up in it. So we'll stay away from Arizona, and let them elect anyone they want for governor.

Hey Democrats,

Extreme violence

"One of the problems is Mexico's southern border with Guatemala, where you can see people in broad daylight crawling back and forth at will. They can move any sort of item they like - illegal merchandise, immigrants and even drugs."

Since then, gang violence has become more shocking, with beheaded bodies hung from bridges and police discovering pits filled with dozens of slain cartel victims.

Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, has seen a spike in recent violence. On Tuesday investigators found bodies of 72 migrants. Luis Freddy, is a wounded Ecuadoran survivor.

Both drug and human trafficking gangs often kidnap people for ransom in Mexico, where violence shows no sign of abating as gangs battle for control of smuggling routes.

So Jan Brewer lost her train of thought. So what? Obama has to travel with a retinue of teleprompters to prevent his having the same problem.

The fact remains, despite the brain freeze, that she is right and that Obama is being obstinately vengeful in his refusal to protect the people of Arizona and by extension, America.

When Republicans are called out, they flounder because they must rely on lies to advance their cause. This is why there's been a virtual moratorium on debate and public comment from the newest class of GOPer -- Palin, Angle, Paul. I'm so tired of conservatives calling for accountability from the opposition when they allow their own to cower in silence.

Hey, Barack Obama has the same problem when giving public speeches. Obama relies on teleprompters to smooth things out for him. Maybe that would work for Brewer.

Jan Brewer may not be a good debater but she has the correct stance on the issues that plague Arizona and America.

America is under siege by tens of millions of foreign invaders from the blighted countries to our south. This is in NO way immigration. We are being occupied by a vast army of illegal squatters who have no interest in America except for the American dollar.

It must be stopped and reversed with all means available or America will drop even further into economic ruin.

Governor's like Jan Brewer are not new.

For example, during Reconstruction governor's of both Arkansas (Powell Clayton) and Tennessee (William G. Brownlow) used Marshall law to combat violence of the KKK, while others turned the blind eye and acted as if violence didn't exist.

The governor of Tennessee was known for his lack of professionalism to say the least (like Jan Brewer). However just because one is not articulate does not mean that one does not put public safety a priority.

Violence has no race. The only thing that has changed is what color of skin is protected by political correctness.

She said it was an error and says she meant headless bodies found in Mexico. This is an outright lie too because in her original statement she said our law enforcement people found them. Excuse me, but our law enforcement people are not patrolling Mexico.

Janet Nappy is pretty good at stirring up fear herself, but in Nappy's case it is the veterans, Christians and the like that Homeland Security needs to watch. You know, Americans, not criminal Mexican Cartels that are invading border states like AZ.
The people of AZ don't care how flowery Brewer's words are, and the people in AZ know that right across the border, a mere 2 blocks beheadings and killings are occuring weekly if not daily, and that is a fact.
The people of AZ need a Governor that will work to protect the citizens. Not some flowery orator that will work against the people. That is why she is going to win ........
You must be living in a bubble if you haven't heard or seen the signs advising people to stay out of national parks because of drug and human smugglers.

Jan Brewer will likely win the gubernatorial race in Arizona, because she never had a head to lose. Rand Paul - who's on the John C. Calhoun, George Wallace side of the apparently-reopened 14th Amendment and Civil Rights Act(s) debates - will likely win in Kentucky. Harry Reid, whose seniority in the Senate is about the best thing Nevada could ever hope for, could potentially lose to a woman that believes we should barter chickens for our children's vaccinations.

It is now all the rage to call the President of the United States a commie, socialist, Muslim, illegal alien . . . and liar. And given the new 1.7-second news cycle (and attention span of many Americans), lots of people are inclined to believe it - particularly if it helps them cover up something less palatable in themselves; the mental equivalent of wearing a white hood.

Looks like bigotry and ignorance are back in fashion. They are the political style of the season - though the thread count's a tad down on the sheets due to all the layoffs. Selfishness, too, has made a big comeback, as many Americans have realized that they won't be able to refi unto an infinite horizon of "home improvements" like a trip to Hawaii or a new Jaguar.

And, predictably, they drape this mound of rhetorical cow dung in the American flag and plant a cross-shaped, pine-scented air freshener in the middle of it, cueing "Amazing Grace" from the choir just in time for a November altar call.

As I write, the throng is filing down the aisle, ready to pledge their lives to . . . well . . . they're not precisely sure of what they're pledging their lives to. We hear a lot of talk about "Constitutional" candidates - code for states' rights, which is code for "we don't serve your kind in here." We know they're all very angry - that they want to "take back the country."

They will tell you that their platform is the Constitution. Yet, ask them about the Establishment Clause or legal precedent(s) in the context of civil rights and they'll stare blankly and repeat their mantra, "I am a strict constructionist. I am a strict constructionist. I am a strict constructionist."

They're energized, so they'll likely run the table.

Stupidity is, by its very nature, passionate and energized. And ignorance always has the courage of its convictions, because it has no questions.

Really, seems to me the Republicans have won the debate on HC where it counts, with the public.
Being a good speaker only proves a person could be a good car salesman/woman. Running a country or being a governor is a lot different. Flowery words are not what the people are looking for. It is the actions of inaction. Brewer has proven she does what the people of AZ want.
Not like Obambi. Doing what the people don't want. Sooner he is gone the better.

To me, "ACTIONS speak louder than words" anyway. So what if Brewer isn't a great rhetorician. I'd much rather have someone leading us who DOES what's right and best for our country, than one who speaks well [with the aid of a teleprompter] but does what's wrong for our country.

Three Arizona counties the size of the entire State of Delaware were taken over by Mexican nationals and, instead of sending in troops to liberate those counties and to vanquish the enemy, Obama CEDED those counties, while warning U.S. citizens to stay out of them. Further, to aid and abet the enemy, Obama incredibly filed a federal lawsuit against those he should instead be defending and protecting!

Never mind, her misrepresentation of the facts which she is twisting to suit her own political gain through inciting fear and hatred. And need I remind everyone that she has the perfect ally (Sheriff Joe- another winner).

My hope is the people of AZ, will wake up and realize we deserve leadership not only from our top post but from all of the leadership! While Terry Goddard may not be the most gregarious personality; he at least can handle himself properly. He does not stutter, stumble and giggle to themselves like some kind of love struck teenager! He understands the real issues and my hope is that he will not let her continue to twist things around and continue to call her out on her, dare I say it, LIES!

I personally hope that the democratic party will come to Goddard's aid and help him win here in AZ as for the moment Brewer is letting SB1070 carry her and we have larger issues that need to be solved (education, budget deficits and JOBS).

And what has Brewer really done for AZ? Let's see she ensured we made it on Jon Stewart's, The Daily Show, we've made the national media thanks to her lack of composure and last but certainly not least, her 'stories' about the border and the violence we supposedly face everyday! News flash.....my morning respite of the paper and coffee has yet to have any bullet holes, to be sliced by a machete or to have any other threats while sitting in my local coffee shop.

Enough said...by this I may live in AZ but I'm not a nut case, appalled AZ resident....

Interesting angle.

You might have a valid point, except that the debate was planned, and she was expected to have an opening statement... something that the average 12-year-old can do with a single prep session.

So, yeah... it's not that crazy that she didn't know what to say, but it isn't helpful that she didn't have a statement to open a debate, even though she FULLY knew that she would need an opening statement.

She's just not on point. I've watched over a dozen clips of her... She's NOT up to the task of running anything beyond her household... providing that there are no kids involved.

She's an idiot!

After that performance, I expect Jan Brewer to not be seen in public until after the election. Palin and other stupid Republicans don't like answer any questions, except from the right-wing noise machine. None of these people have any solutions to American's downfall, they like to make issues out of the border and that Islamic mosque in NYC. She will just get money from the Koch brothers & other greedy rich people and run plenty of angry, negative television ads.

In reading the comments, I find most of them appalling and only shows the stupidly of the writer which do not want to be confused by fact as their head is made up. I find the so called news media (which I have not believed or had faith in for over 40 years). So, she had a pause to gather her thinking, I wish that some of the corrupt politicians in Washington DC could do the same. Like the corrupt Reid and Pelosi. But, leave it to the so called News Media to pick on anything and spout it over and over again which shows that they have no talent and only negative Judgmental, disrespect and manipulative in trying to be narcissistic. When the Federal Government turns in a state law as human right violation to the Totally Corrupt UN it is out right stupid and smacks of treason. When the President of a failed state MEXICO get a standing ovation from our Congress for putting a quilt trip on the USA that is the end of it all. But, no one mentions any of this even the out of touch judgmental press. One more thing the Congress and FDA has sold out for money and power to the Pharmaceutical Co. allowing drugs on the market that murder 5000 or more people each month. Where is the press now?

Are we electing a debater or a governor?? We are too often carried away by a glib tongue, or fast talker -- see Obama!!

We need a strong leader -- not a used car salesman (no offense to her opponent intended).

So, go Arizona, re-elect Jan Brewer! From a South Carolina patriot who respects States rights.

Posted by: bmetler | September 3, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

There already is a "pathway to citizenship." You start from your country of origin, you then apply to migrate LEGALLY into the USA. Then, you wait while you are checked out, verified, and if and only if approved, THEN you may enter the USA and become a citizen. THAT is the pathway to citizenship. If you are in the USA illegally, go back home to your country of origin, get back to the end of the line. MAYBE then you can earn the right to be a citizen.

Enforce CURRENT immigration laws already on the books. Arrest and deport every illegal immigrant. Deny anchor babies the right to citizenship if both parents are not legal citizens. 12-20 million people living in the USA illegally are not immigrants, they are invaders.

Secure the border, and you will stop the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants. The Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall, and the current security walls in Israel/West Bank ALL prove that if you are serious about securing your borders, it CAN BE DONE. To those who say "you can't expect all 12-20 million illegal immigrants to leave:" YES WE CAN, if we want to. It's been done before, Mexican Repatriation it was called, back then. See: Wikipedia entry for Mexican Repatriation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Repatriation

There is an endless pot of taxpayer money to throw at Iraq, Afganistan, and policing the oil industries' (and China's export cargo ships') safe passage. I say it's time to use our tax dollars to DEFEND the USA. It is time for us to use the National Guard literally, to guard the nation's borders.

Please spare me the sob story of breaking up families; if parents are here illegally, they can take their children back home to the parent's country of origin when deported. If you wed an illegal immigrant, you most likely knew that going into it, and if not, then your marriage is based on lies and deception. No family need be broken up; keep the family together by having them ALL go at once when the illegal is deported.

cleancut77,

Teleprompter didn't help your boy Bush...Obama didn't need one against the GOP in Baltimore at their retreat when he cleaned their clocks on the HC debate... its all about intelligence... the right lack it in abundance...

These were her prepared, opening remarks. It was her opportunity to tell voters what she's done while in office, why she's the most qualified candidate, and what she will do if reelected. Clearly she was unable to do any of the three and is not qualified for the job. If she's "done everything" already, as she says, then there is no reason whatsoever to reelect her. And yet her response to the beheading questions afterward was to question what her opponent's plan when clearly she doesn't have one of her own.

Clearly Gov. Brewer was willing to say or do anything to pass SB 1070 and financially benefit her supporters and now the chickens have come home to roost. She cannot defend these past statements because they were not true, she was simply distorting reality for personal political gain and now reporters are calling bull. The fact remains that there is no immigration crisis in AZ or anywhere else. By every measure, illegal immigration and related crime in the US are on the decline. Unfortunately for the right wing extremists such as Ms Brewer this fact proved inconvenient when trying to pass this unconstitutional law in a cynical attempt to garner votes.

My thought when I heard about this was: I didn't know Evan Mecham had a sister!

Arizona needs to do something about its law that allows the Secretary of State to become governor when the governor steps down. The state would be much better off to have a lieutenant governor who could be judged and elected partially on the basis of his or her capacity to serve as governor should the need arise. The Secretary of State has a very narrow range of issues that the office deals with. Individuals who are elected to the office are rarely prepared to be thrust into the governor's office.

Jan Brewer is an uneducated idiot. She is by far the worst of the three women who have moved from S of S to governor in the last two decades. Terry Goddard has been around for a long time. He isn't particularly exciting, but he is very capable. Arizona should take the opportunity to send Ms. Brewer into retirement and put their government into more capable hands.

Napalitano like a typical Democrat spent us until there was nothing was left to spend and then headed to Washington to do more damage to the nation. Folks,

Regardless of where you personally stand on these issues, and regardless of where you might believe the Governor stands on these issues, aren't we missing the point?

Lots of people have weighed in saying that the Governor is not an orator - and we should give her a pass.

Help me here - she was asked a question about public remarks (amongst other things). Her refusal to even address the issue is an insult.

We, as citizens, expect to be able to ask our elected representatives to explain themselves - to tell us where they stand, to explain past statements. This is a VERY lenient requirement (and in my opinion, doesn't meet MINIMUM requirements of our elected officials).

The Governor REFUSES to answer these inquiries.

By this action, she has refused to comply with a minimum requirement of elected office: to answer the electorate.

This is not a matter of articulation, or oratory. This is a matter of refusing to answer public inquiry on a subject that she has waded into.

If she can't or won't answer these simple questions, she deserves to lose the trust of the voting public.

Jan Brewer stepped in when Obama relieved us of a mediocre governor who looked to Washington for direction, not the citizens of Arizona. She is not a great speaker either; we don't really know what she is doing in Washington but she is not doing it very well.

So Jan Brewer is not a great public speaker. That is not what we need. We have one orator in chief in Washington; we do not need one in Arizona.

Brewer serves with courage and Arizonans would be foolish to replace her with Goddard.

Janet Brewer is being used by McCain, Kyl and the Republican party. They told her if she passed this law she would be reelected. Their purpose is to do whatever they can to destroy the President. IF Arizona thought this was such a huge problem for their state why did they just decide to do this after Barack Obama became President? They had a Republican President and a Republican Congress for six years and did absolutely NOTHING to deal with this issue. John Mcain has been a Senator in Arizona for what 30 years? What has he or Kyl done during the time they have been Senators for their state? OR are they saying this just became a crisis after President Obama was elected?

Now, what I find is interesting is the tea party has managed to get several people through the primaries all of whom are very far to the right and have what some people think bizarre ideas. They speak out on their ideas or show their incompetence and the first thing they do is refuse to talk to the media or answer questions. They blame the media for twisting their words. Do the American people really want to send these people to DC or to run their state? I mean they are always whining about transparency but some people would be willing to let people like Brewer, Angle, Miller and Paul who have already given them an idea as to what they plan to do for them given a chance simply because they hate the President and the fact that Democrats control government. WOW!!! I guess we get the country we vote for , to bad people just can't give this President a chance to do what he was elected to do without getting crazy.

Welcome to Obama's bizarro world, where what's good is bad and what's bad is good.

Just like what Obama did by defending the New Black Panthers hate group and thumbing his nose at honest voters, now he's defending illegal aliens that sneak in our country and steal our identities while attempting to punish anyone that enforces the law.

Seriously, Obama is either a real sick individual or a traitor to or country and his oath.

I have seen comment after comment praising Governor Jan Brewer in her attempts to enforce Federal Immigration laws which already exist, and I am glad to see so many United States Citizens coming to realize the tenacity of our Federal Government in wanting to sue one of the very States it is supposed to be serving, for merely attempting to end the inflow of illegal immigrants taxing the Arizona economy. The level of Solidarity I am seeing in probably 95% of these comments brings me to think there may actually be a glimmer of hope in restoring governance to WE the PEOPLE, rather than continuing down the path of BEING governed.
There was a time when voting would change the course of our great Nation, but the level of degradation and corruption within the political world, at least on the Federal level, is becoming undeniable, and there are few politicians anymore who resolutely SERVE us, and still fewer who are incorruptible, or without agendas for the few instead of the many. For decades, as we have gone from one Presidential administration to the next, there has been less and less concern for what WE want, to such a degree that things we want done by our government are ignored, or more often than not, the direct OPPOSITE of what we want is carried out with the "We know what is best for you" policy.
When a Federal government intends to sue ANY one of the States it is supposed to serve merely for trying to stem the tide of illegal immigration, this does seem to be a BOLD statement against State government and democracy itself. So to, when a Federal government passes legislation in which a majority of United States Citizens oppose, our lack of being the governing people we are supposed to be becomes blatantly apparent. I see our great country going in a direction that is far and away from what our founding fathers ever wanted, and "doom saying" as it may be to say, it is probably inevitable. Some are saying civil uprising is what is needed, and this too may be inevitable. Yet I think were we as the rightful governors of our United States to ACT upon what we want government to become, I think we will be shocked to learn just how in control of us "Our" Government really is. Civil "Disobedience", so far as reclaiming control of our government would be defined as Civil Unrest, and Martial Law would be put upon us. Civil war is not a road I would ever like to see happen, and yet something MUST be done to change this course of ever increasing Federal control OF the people. I don't know what the answer is, but I DO know we face perhaps the biggest challenge we as Americans have ever had to face.
As we draw closer to a NEW Presidential Administration, and a new Senate, we all share the same hope of ALL of them having OUR interests at heart. We all hope the next round of Federal government will be better than the last one. What are we to do if the next generation of Senators, and the next President are WORSE? Take matters into our own hands? I wish!

To Heyidiot: You ARE an idiot. At least you got YOUR name right. You need professional help!
Governor Brewer is one of those people who is a great Governor and a bright individual, but is just not a good public speaker. I have noticed that in her before. She is right on the mark in passing the law about illegals in AZ and I am behind her 100 percent. She knows what the problems are in her state as well as what other border states are having to suffer. She does not have the ability, however, to communicate those points on air. She needs some public speaking classes in the worst way. She is an intelligent woman but that is her downfall. A lot of intelligent people do not possess the ability to communicate their viewpoints in a public forum, either thru nervousness or whatever, but it does not mean she does not know her subject. She is well aware of the issues her state is putting up with and having to deal with regarding these illegal fleas and the very real possibility of the violent crime leaking into the US from Mexico. The drug traffic problem from Mexico is already coming into the US. She knows that as well as thousands of others. We have a Justice Dept that refuses to do its job. Flat refuses to do its job. It's as useless as mud in a swimming pool and they are trying to start a civil war with AZ because AZ is doing something about the illegal problem. That is the type of Justice Dept we have. And to use the word "Justice" in the same sentence makes you want to gag. Governor Brewer didn't get where she is because she is not bright -- she simply is not a good public speaker. She needs to work on that problem. I feel sorry for her because it is something she needs to do in her job and especially now when AZ is in the public light so much and will be even more starting again in November. The Justice Dept is now filing a lawsuit against the famous sheriff trying to prove profiling so they can add that to the charges in their upcoming Nov lawsuit in front of the 9th Circuit Court. They have literally started a civil war against AZ. The rest of America should stand behind Governor Brewer and AZ instead of belittling her because of her lack of a public speaking ability. Not all of us are lucky that way. But don't kid yourself, she knows the problems in her state and she had the hutzpa to take the steps to stop them when no one else did. I give her an A+ for that. Now a lot of other states want to follow her lead so I'll forgive her for not speaking well and pat her on the back for everything she has done to get rid of these illegals and the money they are costing US citizens. Great lady!

Most of these comments are a step down from the debate which itself was a fiasco. If Brewer is the best Arizona Republicans can come up with then Arizona is in trouble.

Talk about your cut-and-runners! If Brewer cannot handle debating her opposition face-to-face, she is definitely in the wrong line of work, and Arizona voters should let her know that at the polls. Of course, she has yet to explain her dead-air meltdown, and if she doesn't she can rest assured that video will be used in ads against her.

I watched Ms. Brewer; I was not impressed. Those of you who are giving her the out of early stages of Alzheimer’s are way too kind; if she has that terrible disease she shouldn’t even be thinking of running for office. Anyway, it totally not plausible. She makes stories up and then refuses to claim her mistakes, i.e. headless bodies roaming Arizona (totally unknown by any law enforcement or coroner in the state), and the terrible crime rate she claims totally due to illegal immigrants (apparently Arizona has no crime without the immigrants), even with the number of those here illegally shrinking (down from 858,000 to 300,000 people). Her word usage left something to be desired, too. I always say, if you’re trying to look intelligent use the right language. Too hard for her speaking in public is no excuse; the content and remarks were just not there. She simply forgot what she was planning on saying, and it took her 10 seconds to think of something. If Arizona still votes her in, then I believe they get what they deserve, and speaking of conflict of interest, just think how much money the prison contractors will be making with each new arrest!

Posted by: julieforBarack
---------------------------------------

Everything you've just described -- the making up stories (the headless bodies) and then refusing to admit to the error, and, especially, the word usage problems -- those are both almost textbook descriptions of Alzheimer's symptoms.

If she does have this disease, she may not be aware of it (it's difficult to diagnose). And, if she doesn't, well, then I'd say after last night's debacle she still clearly is not qualified to be governor.

Either way, she's obviously not qualified. But she shouldn't be ridiculed, either.

This woman is amazing. No doubt the Republican bashers will have a field day with this, but it matters not a lot what party she's from.

Questions, questions.

I feel sorry for her...was she like this when she was elected? Or has she slipped mentally since being in office? When did she start slipping around the bend? Is this a sign of what we aging war babies and boomers are going to be electing--people like us who have started to lose their poise and who melt under pressure? What's the easiest way to get her into an old age home?

This is more a humanitarian problem than a political one.

What is it with these crazy GOPers?

No debates. No interviews.

Look at Rand Paul, Sharon Angle, and now Brewer.

Palin is in this same kind of boat.

George W. was largely a disaster too when he ran for office.

I understand that it takes time to prepare for these kind of things, and yes, if a politician is ahead in the polls I understand the idea that you don't take ANY risks.

But if a politician is incapable of defending his or her views in public then the person really shouldn't be running for public office. The generation of Republicans before these clowns at least had the capacity to justify and defend their positions. A person may not have agreed with where they stood, but at least they had considered views.

The bar is obviously much, much lower these days. It's as much a reflection of the GOP base as it is of the candidates. Social conservatives in particular are trained to follow authority blindly -- not question it.

It's distortion, dissembling, and demagoguery instead of debates for Brewer. I don't know much about either candidate, but I would never vote for any candidate that ducks debates and interviews. The public has a right to know what candidates stand for, and candidates have an obligation to tell people where they stand on the issues. Brewer's refusal to engage in debates and answer fair questions does a great disservice to her constituents.

I think the bigger issue is not her stage fright or that she stumbled over a few words in a debate, those flaws only make her human. It's that those stumbles and pauses seemed more like a person who's trying to keep all the lies they tell straight than someone who was just overwhelmed by the situation. When she was confronted by reporters about a supposedly false statement she made, she just ran away, and now she's refusing to have any more debates, which makes it look even worse. And going from worse to worst, she admitted that the only reason she did the debate originally was for money! Way to grab the money and run, Jan. I hope AZ residents are smart enough to see this snake in the grass. I wonder what other money she's taking and running away without having to answer questions. Really speaks to her character.

Having looked at the tape again, Ms. Brewer's meltdown last night has every appearance of an episode triggered by early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

Something more than simple stage fright happened last night; it looked like something was physically wrong with her. And she's right at the age (I checked Wikipedia) where Alzheimer's sets in.

If that is the case, then I withdraw my earlier posting. Regardless of one's political views, she should be pitied, not ridiculed.

Disclaimer: I am a registered independent voter in Arizona, very middle-of-the-road. A view from the ground in Arizona: Terry Goddard has been an invisible candidate. In March he led Brewer by 20 points in the polls; at that point, it was unclear whether Brewer would secure the Republican nomination. She signed SB1070 in March (she had nothing to do with writing the bill).

She fought her party to get a temporary one-cent sales tax increase on the ballot; voters approved it in May. Goddard has offered Arizonans no economic plan. In June, Brewer met with Obama, who promised more resources for the border. We have more Guardsman and the feds approved another $600M for border security. Napolitano never secured that type of funding as our governor and she now proclaims the border is "secure enough" from her perch on the Potomac. Yeah, Janet the system is working now that you are in charge. She's the governor who signed budgets that increased spending and cut taxes, which has left the state devastated; we're second only to California in our budget deficit ratio. And then she bailed.

Brewer announced AZ's intention to join 14 other states in suing to stop the mandates of Obamacare. It will have a more serious impact on AZ's budget than other states because AZ's Medicaid pprogram is more generous than other states; Obamacare precludes states from changing eligibity requirements. Goddard refused to represent the state in the lawsuit as the AGs from other states had, so Brewer secured outside counsel. Knowing that Goddard would not adequately defend the state from the federal lawsuit against SB1070, Brewer established the SB1070 legal defense fund in May; it now has more than $2 million in donations from all over the U.S.

I very much respect and admire Terry Goddard, but he waited too long to jump into the race. He sat on the sidelines because he had no primary challenge. While Brewer is a remedial public speaker, the people of Arizona are looking at the ACTIONS of these two candidates. Arizonans want a secure border and they want fewer federal mandates. Brewer understand this. I suspect Jan Brewer will still be governor in Arizona after voters term limit Obama in 2012.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

From my perspective it's extremely irresponsible for a public official at Gov. Brewer's level to dodge the question asked of her. I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask someone to either back up with evidence a claim they've made (especially a claim that could have implications on state and national policy) or say they made a mistake. It's also fine to say the equivalent of "I don't know, I'll have to get back to you", and then follow up.

Ducking the question during the remainder of the debate, however, and then running away is not behavior that would inspire to vote for her, regardless of the question she was ducking.

After reading many of the insults and name calling in this comments section, I decided to post this.

Obama as well as George Bush failed in securing the border and enforcing our laws when it comes to illegal immigration. Jan Brewer is trying to do something about it. So, not only is she fighting to secure her state for her residents, she has to fight the federal government which refuses to do its job. With that in mind, I have to say that if I lived in Arizona and considering the options, Jan Brewer would still get my vote.

What a bunch of frustrated hate filled liberals including the "college varsity" Whatdaf who punched a "Republican" out after he laughed in his face for losing $500,000 in the Obama economy. Apparently whatdaf never graduated.

WP makes a big deal about Brewer stumbling for words in a debate but has nothing to say about teleprompter Obama. Figures.

No wonder people agree with her position; it's unthinkable that a Governor would just make that much stuff up. But indeed she has.

If anyone ever deserved to lose an election, she does.

Once again, progressive preach one thing, and behave meanly --- to anyone, at any time, who disagrees with doctrine.

One thing, please: Will the Washington Post ever begin to apply the microscope to both sides of the spectrum? A good place to start: Examine, with equal intensity, the ethnic studies curricula in at least one county in Arizona, that teach Marxist, "revolutionary" social justice theory that will enable students to "rise up" -- as described even by Stanley Fish in the NY Times. Where's the initial coverage on that? The follow-up? HOw prevalent, throughout the United States?

We won't be waiting.

This woman's performance in office - never mind the debate - is a complete embarrassment to US all.

What the opponent should have called her out on is that SB 1070 is a mere (bad) publicity stunt: fraught with racial profiling or of no real effect whatsoever. It has to be one or the other.

Actually, residents of the US should be gravely concerned with the complete lack of concern for their safety and well being from the federal government. Routinely ignoring pleas from border states for help, or just giving lip service and half hearted, token responses (30 new personnel to the border??) seems far more concerning than a governor who is trying her best to protect the citizens of her state. While the feds are sleeping, our schools, hospitals and social services are being overwhelmed, and law enforcement is being stretched to the breaking point while being hamstrung by said federal govermnent. Our environment is being trashed by the hordes streaming over the borders and large portions of of US territory is rendered uninhabitable to US citizens due to encroachment by criminal elements from the south. Wide open borders lend themselves perfectly to enemies of the country who will have no problems entering the country for whatever reasons they may have. All topped off with a justice department who seeks to punish those trying to enforce the laws and preserve order. Unbelievable. Equally unbelievable are the folks who think this is acceptable. I don't know whether they're just naturally stupid or willfully trying to destroy everything we hold dear. I think it's probably a combination of the two.

Relative to Brewer, her behavior would indicate something is amiss. Whether it is drug or alcohol-related, or she was having an Alzheimer's moment is hard to say. It however does not inspire confidence to watch one's governor suffer such a break in view of the media. Whatever excuse her office provides will not eliminate questions regarding her ability to effectively hold office. Residents of Arizona should be gravely concerned.

Someone else wrote:

The federal government has posted signs along a major interstate highway in Arizona, more than 100 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, warning travelers the area is unsafe because of drug and alien smugglers, and a local sheriff says Mexican drug cartels now control some parts of the state.

The signs were posted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) along a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend, a major east-west corridor linking Tucson and Phoenix with San Diego.

They warn travelers that they are entering an "active drug and human smuggling area" and they may encounter "armed criminals and smuggling vehicles traveling at high rates of speed." Beginning less than 50 miles south of Phoenix, the signs encourage travelers to "use public lands north of Interstate 8" and to call 911 if they "see suspicious activity."

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, whose county lies at the center of major drug and alien smuggling routes to Phoenix and cities east and west, attests to the violence. He said his deputies are outmanned and outgunned by drug traffickers in the rough-hewn desert stretches of his own county.

"Mexican drug cartels literally do control parts of Arizona," he said. "They literally have scouts on the high points in the mountains and in the hills and they literally control movement. They have radios, they have optics, they have night-vision goggles as good as anything law enforcement has.

"This is going on here in Arizona," he said. "This is 70 to 80 miles from the border - 30 miles from the fifth-largest city in the United States."

He said he asked the Obama administration for 3,000 National Guard soldiers to patrol the border, but what he got were 15 signs."

So idiot liberal progressive filth. Lets look at the facts. The Government lead by your progressive liberal extremist leadership, along with the past negligent Republican leadership continue to let the border free and open to drug cartels, and illegal foreign tresspassing invaders endangering the lives of U.S. Citizens. They are guilty of Gross Negligence, and will be held accountable at the polls. Jan Brewer has been one of the best proponents for the State of Arizona and the security of our Nation. Progressive Liberal leadership in Washington has not, and are complete disgraces.

Barack Obama is a National DISGRACE.

I guess we can see the pattern here. It's a familiar formula used by the righties for years and it often works. Blame the press for asking such "unreasonable" questions. Yes, it's the main stream media that are in the hip pocket of the liberal left. You can't blame us for not answering their loaded questions. You can't expect us to be held accountable.

Hey, it works for the "twittering twit from the tundra" who learned her lesson in the Katie Couric interview in 2008. Airhead Angle is using this gambit in Nevada. So "Waitress Jan" Brewer is trying it out in Arizona. Can a Democrat win the governorship in Arizona this year? As Jan would probably say, "When pigs fly!" Waitress Jan basically figures that she's so far out ahead in this race that it doesn't matter what she does or how poor a candidate she demonstrates herself to be. She's a Republican who supports a crack down on immigrants - that's all that matters this year.

Don't expect the no-nothings that are planning to vote for her to read the Post's article indicating that imigration is down 67%. All these accusations that the President and Congress aren't doing anything about illegal immigration are evidently wrong. The numbers tell a different story. Apparently the new efforts at the federal level are beginning to pay off, so there is no need for every state in the union to pass its own version of an illegal immigrant law. That's the reason the founding fathers put this function in the hands of the central government. It is the national government's responsibility to maintain the borders - and there is good reason for that. But Waitress Jan doesn't care. It's a winning issue. Never mind the image this paints of her state.

Blanking out at the beginning of the debate is easily forgivable. Running away from important questions about her previous statements is not forgivable. This issue has also generated a somewhat unprecedented phenomena of significant cash donations in small amounts from outside AZ to assist in the defense of the AZ Law against the DOJ and Eric Holder. When Salon, MSNBC, and the Huffington Post start pontificating about something as trivial as a 16 second human lapse on television, it is obvious she has made a difference and is viewed as a threat to the hysterical progressives. Perhaps she should consider teleprompters in the future as POTUS once employed in a grammer school.

Boys and girls here and especially the folks who wrote this piece and other media folks who this story for other venues:

It just may be that Ms Brewer's behavior was deliberate. Going silent and walking out is an old tactic the puts an opponent, including the media, into a vacuum while supporters, who hate the media and just about everyone and everything else rejoice.

Sometimes folks one should think differently. This may be one of those times.

Whenever the Republican party goes off the deep end, they start conjuring up some deep-seated paranoia in the populace, in the 1950s it was Joe McCarthy finding "communist influences" under every wood-pile, and even in the floridation of drinking water! Today its Sarah Palin, Brewer and John Boehner whipping up paranoia in the Fox lobotomized lemmings, with dark stories of illegal immigration and "anchor babies"! The reality is that Republican business owners WANT that cheap, illegal labor, and will make sure that Republicans do absolutely NOTHING about it! Sure, I'd like to see some sensible immigration reform, but this nutjob Brewer is grandstanding something awful to blow up this whole immigration "crisis"! I live in Texas and there has been nothing like what these radical Republicans allege! Arizona would do themselves a big favor by giving their American Taliban Governor to boot in the next election!

Please be kind. Jan Brewer is showing signs of Alzheimer's. She has fantasized a number of things; the facts are confused in her mind. It's painful to watch her opening statement and to feel her embarrassment in being unable to retrieve congruent thoughts. She should not be made fun of; people who have suffered through their family members' mental decline will see the possibility right away. Something is wrong here. Governor Brewer's memory is playing tricks on her. This is sad. Rachel Maddow showed an extreme lack of compassion on MSNBC tonight.

The federal government is spending our tax dollars on nuisance law suits against a state that is actually enforcing the law of the land .... something our President and Congress refuse to do.

Meanwhile, this same President and Congress are not only condoning sanctuary of illegal aliens, they grant extra funding to do it.

We have a President who has warped priorities and a Congress that won't write an immigration reform bill OR enforce the laws of the land, yet they still expect to be paid and re-elected.

Try copping that attitude in the real world.

I've never seen Gov. Brewer speak before, so I have no idea what her normal personal affect is. It appears to me - an outsider looking in - that the governor was under the influence of some substance. Debate jitters by themselves do not cause a seasoned politician total loss of the ability to speak coherently using complete sentences.

At any rate, it's stunning to watch a sitting governor completely ignore reporters' questions while standing in front of the cameras in stunned silence with rapidly blinking eyes.

Based on the governor's Palinesque debate performance (which I watch via ABC 15) and her deer in the headlights appearance after, she doesn't appear qualified for the job, even with almost two years' experience.

official in Cochise County said a very small number of bodies — usually one or two per year — are found without skulls. But with no evidence that a cutting implement was used, that is typically the work of animals, the official said.

A cowboy on the Atascosa Ranch in Santa Cruz County found the skull of an undocumented immigrant on June 27, 2008, and the property’s owner, J. David Lowell, recounted the grisly discovery in a letter to Gov. Brewer this month.

“On that day one of our ranch hands was working horseback and discovered a human head near a trail believed to be used by drug and alien smugglers,” the letter read. “Although the head was missing the lower jaw, it was immediately apparent that much of the mass and flesh of the head was still present. The cowboy searched the area in hopes of finding the remainder of the body to no avail.”

Lowell notified officials at the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, who went to the ranch and took possession of the head.

Dr. Bruce Parks, who serves as the chief medical examiner for Pima and Santa Cruz counties, confirmed to FoxNews.com that the head was identified through DNA testing as that of 43-year-old Francisco Fuentes Dominguez, who was not a U.S. citizen. Parks said a cause of death was not determined, but there was no evidence of decapitation. Other “badly decomposed” parts of Dominguez’s body were found nearby earlier in the year, he said.

Why do Americans think that being a good debater means you'll be a good governor or a good president? Hey, just look at Obama! That should settle the question once and for all that the two do not go together. Some people are just good debaters. Some of your best government officials (including presidents) weren't good debaters. But that's the problem with Americans! It's all surface. It's all show! What happens? You get somebody like Obama. Bush and his "temporary worker" program for illegals to perform work that Americans simply "will not do".... like construction, home building, electrical and plumbing work.
McCain's new agenda has changed him (only temporarily) just to get him re-elected. Jan Brewer's corner fits McCain nicely until his "other face appears!"

FYI: Arizona Gov Brewer is a dim-witted (at the Alvin Greene level) TAX-AND-SPEND RINO who has done essentially NOTHING to help the state's and country's ILLEGALS problem, except sign State Sen. Russell Pearce's outstanding bill and pander to voters for her re-election. Pearce is the legislative genius behind ALL of Arizona's outstanding immigration reform laws. Pass that on to the uninformed mentally challenged that actually think Brewer, who just imposed $3 BILLION in additional taxes on Arizona citizens to give to unions and big government, is "presidential material" (for the d-crat socialists, maybe!).

However, as pathetically bad as brewer is, her lunatic-left d-crat socialist opponent is worse.

21st Century America;
To pull America out of the present quagmire that is our economy we must do the following;
"Amend the Federal Community Reinvestment Act" to allow local and historically responsible financial institutions to loan local businesses and industry funds to create businesses and save failing industries with acceptable proposals.
Design a bill that will compel Congress to legislate without bribery, either receiving bribes from lobby, special interests, or earmark trades for votes from within Congress, and to Congresspersons themselves, or Amend Article 2 Section 4 of the United States Constitution, Disqualification, where it will hold Congress accountable to the same laws as it holds the Executive office.
Develop legislature that redefines the term "Financial Institution", Doing this will designate Wall Street as a "Risk Institution", and banks as financial institutions, separating the two to protects Americans from unapproved financial losses and speculation on mortgages. If a Mortgage is traded, sold or speculated, it must be with the owners approval, and to share the risk with the homeowner, profit from homeowner approved acts with a mortgage must be shared with the homeowner as it is his or her property. A mortgage approved to a family with children is restricted from foreclosure when financial hardship is caused by health issues or loss of employment.
Design a Bill that will designate a Treasury Account for newborn Americans with an opening amount of $ 10.00, this Bill will also expand to every American to secure financial stability for a college education, opening a business or for retirement. This program will give Americans an opportunity to invest in America with monthly deposits with no minimum or maximum restrictions. The funds generated by this program will begin to buy debt back from foreign investors, it will bring our interest payments of roughly $ 700 billion per year into the Hands of Americans. This program will pay down the national debt and give financial security to Americans and hope of a better future. If this Bill is voted into law within the next year, it will develop into a program that will offset the burden on Social Security by the estimated time of Social Security's depletion in 2035, and allow US to effectively repeal Social Security in 2070 without endangering the financial stability of Americans. We are the greatest nation on earth, it is time that Americans are the most financially secure people on earth.
Develop and enact an Audit Bill; This will require that each state and our federal government to audit by independent accounting firms, every agency, limited to national security rules, to the core. To place the results on the treasury website for transparency to the public. This Bill will also determine waste in taxpayer funds that the GAO fails to address due to outside pressure or Executive demands.

The real shame will be if the fair-minded citizens of Arizona, the ones that can see through all the fear-mongering of Brewer and other Tea Party candidates, don't show up in the primaries and on election day. History seems to show that those of the ilk of the Tea Party are so passionate that they come out in droves for elections. Not so much, or as often for the rest of the electorate. Personally, I'm scared sh**less about the possibility of extremist right wing candidates winning office this November, and continue to be awed by how much influence the Tea Party has seemed to gain. The Democrats must find a way to counteract all the fear-mongering and to present an appealing message to swing voters. It seems the Dems are always on their heels, instead of taking a proactive stance. They don't need to defend themselves, they need to promote themselves instead of letting the right paint them as something they're not.

As if AZ citizens care. Now the No-justive department has sued AZ again. This WH is declaring war on the citizens of AZ for doing the job the Feds won't do. Any Dem running in AZ is going to lose.

Jan Brewer has one very big thing going for her in this election. She's not a democrat, and that's all it's going to take to win.

Nope only the coyotes snacked on the bodies. No beheadings Jan was off that day. Give the woman some slack. The violence IS escalating in Mexico and it is spilling over into the US. We are seeing more random shootings, more home invasions with deaths. It doesn't fit Obama's plan so he doesn't want to admit it. Half of Mexico is here in Tucson hiding from the violence. You see the Mexican license plates everywhere and those are the legal ones with green cards. Crime continues to go up. Feds owe Arizona 2Billion dollars for services we have rendered. Time to pay Obama.

"we have a refrigerated trailer full of dead bodies in Pima County still not identified. They are stacked up like firewood waiting to be identified."

And every single one of them has its head attached. So what's your point, that some people have died crossing the border and they are unidentified? Wow, big surprise there. I guess that's ONLY ever happened while Obama was in office, right?

Get a clue.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer continues to enjoy a solid lead over Democrat Terry Goddard heading into the fall campaign season.

A new Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey finds Brewer leading Goddard by a 57% to 38% margin. That’s little changed from a month ago and two months ago. Just three percent (3%) prefer another candidate while five percent (3%) are undecided.

The race remains Solid Republican in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Gubernatorial Scorecard.

Get your facts straight people Brewer has a near impossible to catch lead over Goddard. She is in absolutely no danger of being voted out of office. You can wish but the people of Arizona like Brewer.

She's put herself in a tight spot--there are no headless bodies in the desert like she said, but to admit that is to admit that she was lying and selling out her state to suck up to tea partiers. The Democrat had a good night--he came off looking sane and reasonable while she came off bizarre, inarticulate, duplicitous, and uneducated.

Truth is, the Obama administration has been far tougher on illegal immigration than President Bush ever was, but for a tea partier to admit that would be a fate worse than death...but now look where she's gotten herself.

Oops--maybe the tea party isn't the path to victory that the GOP is hoping for...

Listening to Jan and Sheriff Joe Arpaio makes you wonder what sane and educated person would even want to live in their state? I'd rather live in a state with people who don't look in your bedroom window, your womb, your reading material or require you to identify which God you pray to.

These Taliban Teabagging illiterates are out to destroy America and change it into their own religious fiefdoms and resegregating the populations. I find all of the exotic flavors of nationalities rather uplifting. Listening to the Talibaggers and their leaders Beck and Palin, tells us all just what they are up to. When their revolution starts you can bet both of them will be hiding out and pretending they never advocated war against their fellow Americans.

I'm not for a flood of illegals flowing in unchecked, but I can understand their resentment since we stole so much of their land and left them to fend for themselves just like we did to the original Americans, isolated on reservations.

This is exactly where the Talibaggers want to put the African-Americans, Mexicans, Muslims, Jews, Catholics, and anyone who doesn't believe as they do. When did the rightwing become the party of illiterates and me-tooers? Not one original thought has come out of their party in the last twenty years. Reagan even as an alzheimers ridden man had more sense than they do. fritz

Um, nobody filed a complaint that they couldn't vote or were intimidated. You kinda have to have an actual complaint before the authorities can investigate. Well, in a free country you do.

Three guys with a bat on a grainy YouTube video does not a movement make, except in the paranoid world of the Tea Party.

This woman is proving to be a walking disaster, yet it will probably still be a tight race.

The GOP spin machine, aided by the media, can polish a steaming turd like no one else. But, in the end, these type of unqualified candidates being viable is primarily a sad reflection of voter's apathy and low standards for their leaders.

"All of the people posting have no problem with all of the illegals entering Arizona."

Who said that? Nice straw man there.

By the way, not that Tea Party people care about, or can understand, basic math....but

1. Obama has added 1,500 Border Agents.

2. Obama has sent 1,000 National Guard agents to the border.

3. Deportations are up. Way up. This fiscal year we are expected to deport over 400,000. That's a 25% increase sine Bush in 2007.

4. The pace of Federal audits of businesses potentially engaging in hiring illegals has gone up nearly 400% (yes, 400) since Bush left office.

5. Crime statistics in Arizona and other border states are lower than other major cities.

According to a report by the FBI from June this year, border agents are much less likely to be the victims of violent crime than the average cop in the average American city.

Violent attacks against agents went down in 2009 for the first time in 7 years. In 2009, only 3% of all border agents reporting being assaulted, mostly by rocks being thrown at them.

But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of a good Tea Party rant!

Jan Brewer is not a Hispanic hater...she is an immoral opportunist. Count on our disgraceful media to not pick up on the allegations that she and other Arizona politicos are in bed with the Prison Industrial Complex. Seems ol' Jan may be trying to make money on warehousing Hispanics in prisons and in order to get it done she needs to get her anti-immigration resolution enforced. She may be concerned about the border, but she is probably more concerned about getting this prison deal done and her draconian laws to bring in the commodity (Hispanics). I wonder if the voters in AZ would still support her ideas if they knew that...if she succeeds...AZ voters will still wind up paying for the thousands of Hispanics that they have locked up.

Brewer: "Our law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert either buried or just lying out there that have been beheaded."

A Fox News team investigated the claim and concluded in the last two years only one human skull had been found and that had been the results of animals.

Six medical examiners in Arizona from Yuma, Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Pinal and Maricopa confirmed that they had no records of decapitated bodies.

You know, when even Fox doesn't back your dementia, you're one SOL politician.

Posted by: TheDukeStir1 | September 2, 2010 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Brewer knows that being honest is a lot more dangerous to her than dodging the truth. If you have indefensible positions, it's always better to avoid the questions.

But large chunks of the electorate don't want facts and truth, just easy answers ... that are fantasies.

The Tea Party is a great example. Anti-"socialism" but avowedly pro-Medicare and Social Security. Anti-deficit, but pro budget-busting tax cuts. It makes no sense. But voters - and the politicans they elect - don't have to make sense anymore.

Posted by: JustinOhio | September 2, 2010 2:54 PM | Report abuse

Ms. Brewer exemplifies the tea baggers' motto: "If I feel it, it must be true."

For these folks, in other words, knee-jerk equals common sense.

Odd how a group of "mature patriots" most often acts like a bunch of schoolyard bullies.

And you're going to vote for one of these candidates?
