Media to Terry Jones: You used us!

By Michelle Boorstein
Gainesville, Fla. -- With the world on standby for possible violent rioting over a proposed Koran-burning here, the most fraught moment of the day Friday involved church representatives and a huge, sweaty, frustrated media corps.

Reporters from around the world, some of whom had been waiting on the large open lawn of the Dove World Outreach Center in intense heat and humidity for days, began yelling at youth pastor Luke Jones and an evangelist who has been working with the church after the two men gave a series of unclear comments about what would or wouldn't happen Saturday-- "International Burn the Koran Day".

The appearances by K.A. Paul and Jones - son of the Rev. Terry Jones - just after 3:30 p.m. were the latest in a string of unexpected appearances church representatives made throughout the day. Terry Jones and Paul emerged shortly after 1 p.m. to say they were giving New York Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf two hours to agree to call off plans for a controversial Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero.

Two hours passed. Paul came out of the warehouse-like church, followed by Jones, 29. The men gave no clear answer to questions about whether the Koran-burning was off permanently, what the New York City project had to do with it, and whether there were behind-the-scenes talks going on that could change things.

"We're not going to tell you what's going on!" Jones finally yelled to a crowd of nearly 100 journalists and a few onlookers.

After having just had a similar, frustrating exchange with Paul, who had stood with Jones at the 1 p.m. news conference to issue the ultimatum, the hot and cranky media horde had had enough.

"Are you just toying with us to get attention?" asked a sweaty woman in a suit, crouching to keep out of the shot of multiple cameras over her head.

The crowd groaned.

"Why did you give this two-hour window?" came a shout from another side of the scrum.

"So will you say you're going to burn a Koran anytime you want press coverage?" snapped a reporter with a German accent.

"We're negotiating," said Jones, his maroon T-shirt soaked through with sweat -- but he refused to say what they were negotiating or with whom. And he kept repeating a tantalizingly ambiguous refrain: There will be no Koran-burning at 6 p.m. Saturday night.

"You're just using us! We should all leave!" someone yelled from deep in the media pack.

Silence - for a moment. "Yeah! Let's all leave!"

Jones's response: "Fine, we're not press hungry, go!"

But no one moved, until Jones turned and shuffled back to the church.

Clusters of police officers stood beneath a tree. "We know what you all know," said Cpl. Tscharna Senn, spokeswoman for the Gainesville police department, gesturing to the weary pack.

The media throng silently dispersed -- some back under the trees, where flies (maybe seeking shade?) swarmed, or for the lucky, to air-conditioned satellite trucks or cars. The only sound was a small group of college-age protesters that had gathered across the street in the otherwise quiet neighborhood.

"When our Muslim brothers are under attack, what do we do? Fight back!" came the chant.

Left standing in the middle of the field were two cameramen.

"See, if everyone leaves except for a few people, something could happen," said one.

The other nodded, his face drenched with sweat.

Sorry, but I have no sympathy. If the press hadn't given this guy all the coverage to begin with, they wouldn't have been sitting there waiting for something to happen.

The administration got the general to make his inital statement.

Then the president weighed in.

The the Attorney General had his meeting later that afternoon.

Then the Secretary of State made delivered remarks at her Ramadan dinner.

How could the press ignore ALL THIS NOISE from the administration?

Blame the administration, not the press for doing their jobs.

In other words our media is upset that he didn't burn the Koran after all, so they didn't get the sensational story they were drooling over. They would have loved it if he had caused a huge worldwide crisis so they could sell more of their product. I agree with Nana4 below. The media pumps up any idiotic group to give them credibility.

News must be slow...

"Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males to prepare themselves for the conquest of countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world." Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Iranian Shiite mullah)

Who cares if the Koran is burned? There is fear of retaliation from Muslims as we look around and see that our country has been invaded from every country by illegals...including jihadists.

Now THAT is news and something to campaign about - a required identification system that tracks, deports, and brings criminal charges against illegals - border security.

I didn't think it was possible for the credibility of the press to sink any lower than it has, but I was wrong. It is now lower than the proverbial snake's belly.

Used...?...

The media jumped in with both feet...

If someone was 'burning' a Bible the liberal media would not have mentioned it…

As to the Koran:

Where ever a Mosque is built, there is an ultirior motive, conversion with force...

I don’t believe the Muslims are here to absorb and integrate into the mainstream…

They want a system where Muslim rights ultimately precede non-Muslim rights…

Muslims are the offspring of Ishmael, fathered by Abraham with Hagar, the Egyptian maid of Sarah, Abraham's wife.

Genesis 16:10-12 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. AND HE WILL BE A WILD MAN; HIS HAND WILL BE AGAINST EVERY MAN, AND EVERY MAN'S HAND WILL BE AGAINST HIM; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Some things never change. There is no appeasing these terrorists. They are wild by nature and seek any opportunity to carry on their carnage.

Meanwhile I'm wondering why Islam is not declared a Terrorist organization, I mean what with holy commandments like this:
1:Qur'an 8:12–I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.
Is that not a commandment to commit terrorism? How about the practice of Al-taqiyya, the practice of
Muslims blatantly lying to non-Muslims, intentionally lying to non-Muslims? Why would we believe anything they say about being "Pieceful"?

No one uses the media unless 'it' wants to be led.
And no one led a most willing media to do their bidding, either by their total silence in the face of a gruesome crime about to take place or their inexplicable overt respect for the Bush Regime. NO ONE in the media challenged anyone in the Bush regime when they were lying this nation into war, no one in the media investigated and reported on what Bush was up to, what he was doing and when he was doing it.
You all knew Iraq didn't have WMD, you all knew that ports were shipping millions of tons of supplies to Kuwait months before Bush announced he was "going to war" as he stepped out of the helicopter after HIS MONTH LONG vacation in Texas in the Autumn of 2002. And on and on and on I could go.
Don't complain now....

Even though many of them had been reporting that people all over the world did not want Mr. Jones to burn the Korans, the media folks were right there to give wacko Mr. Jones plenty of world-wide attention and actually wanting him to burn the Koran so they could videotape it, and send it all over the world.

***The media used Mr. Jones, just as much as he used them.***
When people in other countries got angry over what Mr. Jones wanted to do, the media should have taken all of their equipment and their attention away from Mr. Jones.

There were reports today of people being killed during protests over what Mr. Jones wanted to do. People DIED because of Mr. Jones. That makes him an accessory to murder!!!!!

The media is lazy and would rather report what seems current by virtue that all other stations are 'reporting' on it rather than ignore this kind of news. Journalism has become lazy and pedestrian and increasingly relies on vanilla AP stories to fill its news pages.

While I don't think burning a Koran is the right thing to do, I find it interesting that so many blame Terry Jones for the violent acts that have been perpetrated in other countries since his announcement. He is no more responsible for those acts than an NFL team is responsible for the mob violence that has sometimes occurred after a lost game. It is time to take personal responsibility. Flip Wilson's "the devil made me do it!" was funny, but not realistic. People who murder and burn American flags are filled with hate and just prove the point that the Muslim ideology is one of violence and intolerance. Would burning Bibles have been so "newsworthy?" The media got what it wanted: sensationalism, someone to blame for their greed, and all of us focused on it. Seems like the media is protesting a little too much!

The public jumps on the media for chasing the buck and going after ratings. But hang on, who's paying the bucks and watching the shows?

Of course the media delivers what the public wants. Especially the print media which is operating on a razor-thin margin these days. The Post's news section is a giant lossmaker. Do you think it will rise above touching the story that EVERYONE WANTS TO READ? Do the industries you guys work in function that way?

Try this experiment: Wait for a Sarah Palin story, then look at the list of stories that day, and the number of comments on the Palin one compared to the others. Now you see the problem.

When we look back at ancient Rome in the time of "bread and circuses", who do we blame for the decadence, the dumbing-down? The rich men who laid on the entertainment? Or the mentally lazy public who lapped it up?

Ever since the "media" devolved into "infotainment" in their effort to sell product to make the revenue projections of their corporate owners, some of whom are not Americans, reporters became shills.
Remember "shills" ? They are people who are paid to stand at the gambling stands (like a craps table), pretending to be legitimate customers, and paid to do so, and making bets from money they are given by the pit bosses, in order to attract legitimate customers.
Reporters are now instructed to follow and "report" on ANYTHING that will attract customers: violence, controversey, conflict, anything to attract the wandering eye of the consumer.
I actually think it is a very good thing that this mob of reporters from all around the world finally stood up and said, ENOUGH! You aren't giving us anything! We are leaving!
They will all likely be fired for not standing around making up stories. But, think about it, WHAT possible fantastic stories are left to be made up about this internationally created, BY THE PRESS, "story"?
All they are left with is the notion that UFO's mysteriously descended upon the good Pastor's property and took away his used furniture and sold it to Obama.

Perhaps we could all cool down and dial it back a bit, and take a moment to read the Bill of Rights.

Better yet, download for your children FREE copies of the two-page "Refrigerator Door Bill of Rights" at: www.National-Education-Project.org

Have your kids sign it, add their school picture (kids love that part!), and post it on your refrigerator door (hence, the name).

Or send it to anyone you wish, anywhere. (In the last year, the "Refrigerator Door Bill of Rights" has been downloaded in all 50 states and in 53 countries around the world.)

Non-partisan. Non-political. Just the plain, old Bill of Rights. Your Bill of Rights, by the way, and some of the most powerful and majestic words ever written by a free people.

Might be a nice gift for your kids. And it’s free at: www.National-Education-Project.org

The media is so gullible, they will jump on a non-story and run with it not knowing, or caring, how many you hurt. Just as in politics, you will go easy on your favored political party, but if it's the other party you automatically go on the attack, and that's when you lie the most about the other party, and this is exactly the way Peter Jennings was, and this is the way his buddy Brian jumps in bed with Obama any chance he gets, and that's not the way to get the real story because you are only giving us one half of the story. Brian stop trying to be Peter Jennings, and be more like Walter Cronkite. Too bad we don't have people like Cronkite anymore. He might have been a liberal at heart, but he called them the right way with no slanting to favor his party. That's when we had real men in the news business.

And if they do, shoot them because only extremists react with such ferocity and violence. Remember, Islam is a religion of Respect, Peace, Tolerance, Humility, and Accepting of other people beliefs. There reaction is exactly what terry Jones has been talking about, but most are scared *hitless of Islam, because of this. Their absolute propensity to violence. No other religion reacts that way except Islam. So again I ask, are they respecting our right and freedom to act in anyway we want? What was our reaction to them stoning the couple to death? Barbaric hooligans!

Here is your proof that Obama is a closet Muslim. Would he get this upset if some group were burning Bible? Not likely. He would call it a celebration of civil liberty.

Media to Terry Jones: Whaa Whaa Whaa Whine.

Grow up clowns.

Reporters should just walk away from Mr. Jones and his sycophants. The media created this monster by paying attention to him. The media enabled him to place the lives of servicemen and women in jeopardy and to place the entire world on high alert.

And why? Mr. Jones is a nothing. He's got a church with 50 members -- barely a pimple on the face of this earth. Outside of his manipulation of the media to feed his considerable sick ego, nobody on earth cares what he says or does.

So media members: Just walk away. Remove your microphones and cameras. Ignore this fool and he will eventually fade away into the ether where he belongs.

Bunch of "hooey" as my mother would have said. This complete narcissist who has no problems with endangering American troops is a total publicity-hound.

Everybody has been using the media for the past 18 months. Birthers, Is Obama a Muslim?, Tea Partiers, Presidential Hopefuls, polls, blah, blah, blah. Everything is a Biggggg story and gets hashed and rehashed until it becomes credible and debatable and we end up with One Big National Freak Show and nothing is "news" anymore.

Hilarious ! Absolutely too too funny. The ONLY thing that could
make it funnier is the squirrel eater from Alaska and her squeaky voice.

I think this is a brilliant piece of satire.

Or, is it news? I can't tell.
