'It Gets Better': Dan Savage's anti-bullying campaign for gay teens

A judge's order this week ending the military ban on openly gay service members capped a ground-breaking year for gay rights advocates, who have won a series of courtroom victories on issues ranging from same-sex marriage to adoption. But several recent incidents have highlighted a harsher reality. At least five teens across the country have taken their own lives after allegedly being taunted as gay. Relationship columnist Dan Savage started a YouTube campaign to reach out to gay teens with a simple message: "It Gets Better." Here's a compilation of the videos, from celebrities and other gay people across the country who dealt with bullying when they were young.

Pressed by an audience member on why he hasn't ended the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, Obama said that his hands were tied until the Senate acts: "This is not a situation in which, with the stroke of a pen, I can end the policy." He added, "I think people are born with a certain make-up and that we're all children of God. We don't make determinations about who we love."

Apropos of President Obama's MTV town hall for young people Thursday, American University hosted "The American Forum: Is your vote up for grabs?" on Oct. 6. The event, featuring Democratic strategist Karen Finney and Republican strategist Kevin Madden, focused on the role of young voters in the 2010 midterm elections.
