Sharron Angle tells Hispanic students: 'Some of you look a little more Asian to me'

UPDATE 10/19: Canadian ambassador Gary Doer sent a letter to Sharron Angle, calling her claim that terrorists have come from Canada "erroneous and misinformed."

Ambassador Doer reassures Ms. Angle that there have been no terrorist attacks on the United States coming from Canada and that several extensive investigations have determined that all of the 9/11 hijackers entered the United States directly from third countries.
More than 1.3 million Canadians visited Nevada in 2009, contributing to $1.3B in trade between Nevada and Canada. Over 73,000 jobs in Nevada depend on trade with Canada.

In Angle's defense, in December of 1999 Ahmed Ressam, the so-called "Millennium bomber,'' entered the United States from Canada with explosives hidden in his rental car as part of a plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport. He was stopped by a U.S. customs officer.

Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston has unearthed another strange comment from Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle during a visit with Hispanic students.

"So that's what we want is a secure and sovereign nation, and, you know, I don't know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I don't know that," she told Rancho High School's Hispanic Student Union on Friday. "What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country. My grandchildren are evidence of that. I'm evidence of that. I've been called the first Asian legislator in our Nevada State Assembly." Here's video.

At the same event, Angle defended her anti-immigration ads, saying she wasn't targeting Latinos and suggesting she was talking about the border with Canada:

"I'm not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial. What it is, is a fence, and there are people coming across that fence. What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through. That's the most porous border that we have. We cannot allow terrorists; we cannot allow anyone to come across our border if we don't know why they're coming. So, we have to secure all of our borders, and that's what that was about, is border security."

The ad, which featured a map of Mexico and a group of Mexican farmers, was taken off YouTube after a photographer complained about the use of his photos.

Republicans have been struggling to win over Latino voters. According to a recent poll most Latinos back Democrats, but they aren't very motivated to vote in November. And Republicans hold a big advantage over Democrats this cycle -- they have more high-profile Latino candidates running for statewide offices.

As for Angle's comment about being the first Asian legislator, Ralston (a veteran reporter) says: "I have no idea what she is talking about."

Does anyone think that Sharron Angle looks Asian? Does anyone believe that Sharia law is being practiced in Dearborn, Michigan.Does anyone know that Sharron is for doing away with Social Security, or at least privatizing it? Does anyone know that Sharron is against government run medical plans like Medicare, but that she is on her husband's government run health plan? Does anyone know that she is against unemployment benefits because those people are just too lazy to go out and work?
We really have to stop and think seriously if this is the person we want to represent us in the U.S. Senate? We may think Harry Reid hasn't done enough for our state, but he actually has. Just google harryreid.com/
content/pages/a He has done a lot for us. He is older that Sharron Angle, but he knows what is good for Nevada, and will not let us down. For those who have college age students, the Republicans want to repeal the loans to college students. Let's try not to be influenced by the Scare Tactics of the Republicans this time!

The sad thing about this race and quite a few others around the country is that the radical right has managed to gain a foothold in the GOP, resulting in a group of candidates who are not qualified to be in public office, quite apart from their political affiliation. If Ms. Angle occasionally made a faux pas, like most politicians, it would be appropriate to defend it as a slip of the tongue or unguarded moment. Unfortunately, in her case, rationality has been the exception, not the rule.

There seems to be an unfortunate trend in belief in this country that any candidate who represents a change in the status quo will do. The equivalent in the private sector would be hating your boss and choosing to support a usurper solely based on his mutual hatred of the standing boss, not his qualifications as a replacement.

For all of the talk about the Constitution, we seem to have forgotten that the intention of the Founders was not to create a government modeled on a see saw where one side rises and the other falls in an endless game of stagnation. Instead, they created a system based on a balance of powers with the assumption that compromises would be created to move the forward. Tossing in inflexible ideologues, who have little chance or enacting their far out notions and little incentive to compromise is hardly going to cure what ails the country.

Wow, what a dark shadow she casts over the entire state of Nevada. The citizens ought to be ashamed of her success.

If Latinos in Nevada sit this election out and this monster wins, they will surely learn the hard way what the value of the vote really is.

What's so odd about Angle confusing Mexicans with Japanese? It makes sense coming from a woman who thinks we've put up a wall along the Canadian border to protect us from all those Moosehead-drinking terrorists flooding our country. Any votes cast for her are votes for stupidity.

I can only imagine that when Sharron Angle taught school, kids brought her skin of toads, ear of spiders, and leg of lizards instead of apples!

I hope she still has her broom parked in her closet so when she loses the race and rides off into the moonlight on election night since it should be the last time Nevadans would have to deal with this hag.

Hispanics are not a race, we come in white, brown, black, middle eastern, oriental, combination of the above and in every ethnic group under the sun. What makes us "different" is only language -which bonds us- and culture. As such, it is immensely ignorant to attack Angle on her statement (it is also true that most precolumbian inhabitants of the Americas are of Asian origin. So who is the ignoramus.
further, no terrorists have ever come through Mexico, so if Canada has one, that is 100% above the Mexican record.

there are problems at all our borders, the current crop of windbags can't find their way out of a paper bag with a flashlight when it comes to these issues -which are not particularly partisan, the ignorance is equally shared. Ergo, why can't the discussion be on real issues and solutions

telling Hispanics they look Asian is probably insulting, at least stupid, and at best goofy.

suggesting that the 9/11 terrorists came from Canada is dangerously ignorant.

Suggesting that she was actually referring to Canada, not Mexico, is just plain dishonest.

so we have an ignorant, dishonest, goofball running for office.

and then there's "the establishment clause is actually in the Constitution? Are you sure?" O'Donnell.

Ambassador Doer needs to talk to his country's Intelligence Service, because he seems to know nothing about the terrorist problem in Canada. This is from a CNN news report in the year 2000: "WASHINGTON CNN Fear of terrorist plots against U.S. targets following recent arrests on the Canadian border prompted a Congressional panel Thursday to search for new ways to identify and seize potential terrorists along the historically open U.S.Canada border.

The December arrest of Ahmed Ressam as he attempted to enter the U.S. from Canada with hundreds of pounds of sophisticated bombmaking materials was a loud wakeup call, said Rep. Lamar Smith R Texas.

Smiths immigration subcommittee heard terrorism experts from both the United States and Canada cite the Canadian publics historic lack of concern about terrorism and the growing realization refugees are taking advantage of Canada s lenient policies."

Here in the real world, we expect candidate to win or lose, not loose. Dear joanz3: The WaPo is not the only one afraid whackjobs and nutcases like Angle will win. So are alot of the rest of us. I can't help but ask what hole you came crawling from. If you think it is a good idea for a moron like Angle to win election from Nevada, and actually go into the Senate you are seriously disturbed.

Let's see if I get this correctly. You must be in favor of repealing the 17th Amendment, which allows people to directly vote for senators; you must also want to destroy Social Security; you believe unemployment compensation prevents people from getting jobs; and must be against a woman's choice. I guess you also want to abolish education, and throw out half the population of the US as non-American. You are as dangerous a fanatic as is Angle.

Obviously, Sharron Angle thinks Hispanic kids are so stupid they can't tell the difference between the Canadian and Mexican Border. Maybe if Sharron and you get your way they will not be able to tell the difference in a very few short years.

I have to admit it. I am a secret tea bagger. But I have a whopping problem. I don't know if I want to vote for Lipton, Earl Grey, or Constant Comment.

I am so conflicted because only Lipton is an American company. The other two are funded by the British. Sweating bullets, with heart palpitations, and an overwhelming sense of guilt, I may have to vote for the Earl. I like the packaging more than the other two. On the other hand, my favorite color is yellow, and Liptons colors are yellow and red. After all it is an American company.

But wait! Three generations ago the Lipton family came from Russia, settled in Cleveland and New York, and began to sell Chinese tea.

Oh my God! Who shall I vote for? Any suggestions?

Has it occurred to anyone that Sharron Angle is the terrorist? Maybe she ought to cross the Canadian border - into Canada, and get as far North, away from us, as possible.

Since when has it become possible for the lunatic fringe to escape from the asylum and run for public office?

Oh wait! I sued to teach college history. I should know the answer to this. The last time, in my memory (I was very young and frightened)was in the 1950s when the cuckoos of the John Birch Society emerged from the dungheap and spewed its hatred of everything American by claiming they were the only true Americans.

Before that we go back to the 1930s and Father Coughlan, Gerald L. K. Smith, and their ilk. The end of World War I saw the emergence of a few too many anti-immigrant fools, too.

Gee, I guess we have a history of whackjobs coming out of the woodwork from time to time. I only hope the people - the real people of our great nation - can emerge and defeat these punks.

Today we need good, thoughtful leaders. Not morons who do not know which end is up. I can hardly believe Angle can say the things she does and not get killed by a horde of strange looking alien Asian Mexicalns. I guess they are better behaved than she.

I served in Viet Nam in '68 and my son just got back from Afghanistan. My Grandpa and my dad have both passed away, but there isn't a single living member of these four generations of soldiers and patriots that ever suspected we'd lose our country from within by electing the most horrifically stupid people imaginable to be our leaders.

If Sharon Angle was a school teacher, then that fact goes a mighty long way to explain just why this is happening.

We might as well retire the whole government now and put Peewee Herman in charge as King -- he's no doubt as seriously stupid-perverted as Palin, Angle, Dubya, and O'Donnell combined, but at least he acts like he knows it.

So why would someone be surprised when someone says that someone of hispanic origin looks Asian? It depends on your perspective.
You don't see Norwegians getting (too) bent out of shape when they're mistaken for Swedes these days.. but a hundred years ago, it was considered to be a very nasty insult in this area.
Is the left going to get bent out of shape if someone mistakes an Australian as British? Or if a Greek is mistaken for being Russian? The picking of nits going on is rediculous.

Odd, I was just watching Comdey Central this afternoon, and one of the commedians who is Philipino was saying how he does look Hispanic, rather than Asian. He was right. Most Philipinos I know look hispanic, not Asian.
So why would someone be surprised when someone says that someone of hispanic origin looks Asian?

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle looks like a Republican/TEA party of "NO" member.
Here's my question:
Who are the TEA/Republicans?
They are a prejudiced and biaseds
group of people against:
Blacks - Look at how the speak about
President Obama. No respect!
The Republicans do not care about the
unemployed!
The unemployed Veterans returning from
the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars!
They do not care about Unemployment
benefits!
They do not care about the soldiers
returning from the fronts and
congregating in Camp "Stand Down" in
California!
They ridicule Michelle Obama!
"They hope he fails!'
They don't want any good press for
President Obama.
Vote
Out
The
(E)Incumbent party of "NO"

Look folks, let's be real.
The last thing we need is a bunch of citizen legislators coming into Washington and gumming up the wheels.
If you're happy with things as they are, then please vote for the political machine.
They have our best interests at heart...at least that's what they keep promising.

These citizen legislators--or wannabes--should not be given the chance to make a mockery of our 'bought and paid for' form of government.
I mean, if all of these lobbyists were suddenly unemployed, our government would never be the same!

Yet legislators are still galloping ahead with the spending insaneness, but still wants to add another 2.6 trillion dollars, to our US deficit of over 13 trillion and climbing. In addition to this unspeakable possibility of US insolvency, President Obama's mob, wants to prepare us for drawing illegal immigrants into our Social Security net. (They voting yes to illegal aliens participating in May 2006) If Harry Reid and his associates get their foot back in the door of the Senate, we can expect a defying shove towards mass--AMNESTY. He and his confederates in crime must be disturbed, in trying to pass this bill. Citizens and residents cannot feed their families, cannot keep their means of transportation on the road, or pay their mortgages and he wants—AMNESTY? Neither party is without blame, as this failure of border enforcement remained after the 1986 Ronald Reagan’s bill.

Sen. Reid strangled off E-Verify amendment, limited to a voluntary basis in businesses. Currently Reid, Pelosi Boxer Napolitano, Feingold and the rest of the de-facto monarchy have directed ICE to only arrest full blown criminals and allowing the rest to go back into the communities. Such an act is illegal and contrary to the Immigration bill of 1986. Even our Governors, Mayors cannot be trusted as we have observed with Jerry Brown Gavin Newsom, who did nothing to stop the escalation of Sanctuary Cities in California or other politicians in other comparable cities and states. Reid and his people went along with the policies of Sanctuary Cities, by voting to fund them. These liberals’ extremists want nothing more but to attract every poor person around the world, and accommodate them with a host of benefits, originally reserved for the disadvantaged in America's society.

This mass illegal immigration will lead to overpopulation, a failure of our infrastructure, energy and loss of public entitlements for US citizens and residents. Only the significant removal of all incumbents and a dire warning to each party, that your days are numbered if you usher in another Amnesty. Tea Party candidates are just as vulnerable, if they follow the parties’ philosophical ideas of corporate welfare for businesses; that’s what illegal labor is and giving away American jobs. Any secret sessions to make available Social Security for aliens or endorsing Amnesty are something of treachery to THE PEOPLE. GOOGLE--those Senators and Representatives you are voting for and see their stance on illegal immigration and even check out the costs to your household. Then you choose who should be returned to their high thrones with earmarks, spending sprees, out-of -the-world costs of supporting foreign nationals.?

THE FUTURE IS YOUR NOVEMBER VOTE

Politicians have become very conceited and believe that once they reach Washington they are untouchable. They seem to forget once they get on their high horse, they are still are public servants and can be removed by the vote. The wealthy elites both Democrats and Republicans think once they attain a powerful influence in their constituencies or on Capitol Hill, they can do whatever they want, no matter the desire of the majority of American people. It should be remembered that any slip of the tongue, will be used against the arriving candidate by the Liberal media and the lapdogs in the political parties. The extremist ultra left are out to humiliate you any way they can, so they can proceed with their agenda. The Liberal Democrats have even taken on a financial shroud of massive spending in a time of chronic recession. A major issue that cannot be hidden under the proverbial mat is Illegal Immigration. No matter how they try to disguise it, it keeps coming back to haunt either party. Lawmakers truly deem an open border is a wonderful attribute to our society and all Americans should appreciate that never ending stream of foreigners arriving here with little or no money.

These politicians have compromised America’s safety by lying about the Border Fence construction. It is neither the original expectation of a double fencing (2006 Secure Fence Act); or the completion of the project. It’s alarming to think that Senator Reid, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, Janet Napolitano, Russ Feingold will sweep into the Senate or House, with a massive commitment to adding another Amnesty to the first session of Congress. They keep reassuring us that an Amnesty will cost taxpayers nothing. But the non-profit think -tank of the Heritage Foundation, has made a projection of $2.6 TRILLION DOLLARS. When our whole country is in debt through the importation of foreign oil, our propagating military across the globe and the unwavering corruption in Washington they are still considering a path to citizenship for 12 to 20 million criminal aliens.

Posted by: infinity555 | October 18, 2010 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Yep, this is proof positive: we're better off with professional politicians.
I mean, with 30,000 staff employed on Capitol Hill, our Congressional representatives would never be allowed to make such an obvious mistake.
So go with the machine, and leave your independence and self-worth at the door.

Oh wait, that's right, the rightwing Moonie newspaper is going bankrupt because it's content is bankrupt. The rightwing reporters cannot write anything right that contains truths.
So save your blood pressure and stop reading the Post. They won't miss you.

Better still, since your complaint about how the idiotic Angle is being portrayed evoked your brain to cite Pelosi,Franken and Frank, I have to ask, why? What do they have to do with Angle's idiocy? All three of them are quite successful, in fact, Pelosi is probably the most successful Speaker we've had in many many years. She has completely achieved every task set at her and done it without trashing her haters like they've continued to trash her. Like you are trashing her.

1. Nevadans should not allow themselves to be represented by someone who will be a laughingstock in the Senate and get zip done for them. Angle's cluelessness is reason enough to vote for Reid or stay home.

2. Clueless or not, the fact is that Hispanics have anywhere any range of Native American heritage in their ancestry, ranging from zero to 100%. Since the Native Americans originated from Asia, it's not inconceivable that some could be mistaken for Asians. One of my college roommates, a light-skinned, mustachioed Indian from Bombay with short, curly hair, said he was often mistaken for a Mexican. So once again the pointless rage machine goes berserk because someone has the nerve to actually say what she and the rest of us see but don't say because we'll lose our jobs or fortunes if we do.

So don't vote against Angle because what she said wasn't true. Vote against her because the only way to get anything done in the Senate is to be a true hypocrite. Angle's stupid, but at least she's honestly stupid.

But, what does it have to do with anything? How is it relevant regarding the racist ad she took down talking about "illegal aliens" under a picture of intimidating looking Mexicans. And, how does she correlate it to her lie about the terrorists coming from Canada? And, how is it relevant that she looks Asian? I don't get any of it.

OK, so Ms. Angle was really talking about the US border with Canada, not Mexico, and the Latino students she was addressing look more Asian than Hispanic. Maybe they swam the Bering Strait and they came to the US through Canada from Siberia. You can ask anyone who served in the German ground forces in Russia during the last several years of World War II just how dangerous those Siberians can be. Assuming you can find any German combat vets from that era alive, that is.

I see no point in repealing the 17th amendment, but I suspect states choosing their Senators would be no less transparent than the passage of Obamacare - you know, an actual piece of legislation.

Someone pointed out to me last week that she was a part time substitute teacher and did not send her own kids to schools, but home-schooled them.

Joe Miller in Alaska has plans to repeal the 17th Amendment, which allows people to directly vote for senators. He wants us to go back to the smoke-filled rooms and backroom deals for choosing senators.

As Beavis and Butthead once said "The Angle of the dangle is inversely proportional to the beat of the meat"

to be fair, she didnt coin the term "negro dialect" - Harry Reid did. And he praiseed the president for being "light skinned".

Goofy grandma.

Angle should be in rest home, sedated, in a wheelchair watching TV.

Speaking of sedated, has any enterprising reporter looked into her medical (mental) history?

Anyway, if this what the political system of the "greatest country in the world" has to offer, then we may as well call it quits.

Well...Sharron Angle does believe in Gov. Jan Brewers immigration law to ask Latinos for their "papers please". So...maybe she feels better about Asians than Latinos? Or possibly she believes that we should automatically use our second amendment remedies for these interlopers? Care to explain yourself Mrs. Angle? What was that you said? Tofu yes...Tacos no. LOL

What the heck is wrong with Nevadans that they can even entertain the idea of Angle in high office? A candidate that makes things up and spouts nonsense? Didn't anyone in that state get more than a 6th grade education?

Posted by: fluxgirl | October 18, 2010 4:12 PM | Report abuse

Well, her opponent thought Obama was electable because he was articulate and light-skinned...

Actually, for the first time Angle is right about something even if it's by accident. Mexican-Americans are descended from Mexicans, most Mexicans have a high percentage of Native American blood, and Native Americans immigrated to the New World from Asia, so they should look a little Asian.

Nevada Republicans, conservatives, and Tea Party supporters...I understand your anger and frustration with Reid. But you are shooting yourselves in the foot to vote for this clearly unqualified candidate to represent the interests of Nevada. Is this the best you can do? Do you really believe than just electing anyone is better than Reid, especially for Nevada? Electing this type of candidate will not be in anyone's best interest. As for stating her now pulled immigration commercial is about the Canadian border, that's simply an outright lie. Anyone can see that.

Although I'm busting a gut, I can't laugh because it's just so sad. WTH??!!! What is she talking about? Why are you talking about what a person looks like and saying they look like something else, like it's better to look Asian than Hispanic? Why are you even talking about Asians and why are you saying that you look Asian? Are they supposed to identify with you because you say they look Asian and you claim someone said you are the first Asian legislator and that's not even a true statement. OMG!

As nutty personally as Angle and O'Donnell are, it's the policy ideas that distinguish the tea party candidates as fruitcakes. Joe Miller in Alaska has plans to repeal the 17th Amendment, which allows people to directly vote for senators. He wants us to go back to the smoke-filled rooms and backroom deals for choosing senators.

These tea partiers are just fundamentally not comfortable with the 20th century, let alone the 21st. I don't think we want ANY of them in power. I only vote for sane people who are living in the present.

Rather strange for Nevada to worry about the "porous" border with Canada a 1,000 miles away as a Main Election Issue! That is an acutely obtuse angle!

Nutjob. I hate Harry Reid, as a liberal, but Sharron Angle is a dingbat with a mission to destroy this country, in the mold of Sarah Palin. I'd be happier if there was a challenge from the left of Reid, but since there wasn't one to my knowledge, I have to hope that he holds on to his seat. He's a sucky Senate leader, because he's been afraid to bring up the vast majority of House bills that have passed (300+) under Pelosi - when the GOP will filibuster whatever or vote against whatever, anyway. Might as well just bring the bills up for a vote, and let the chips fall where they may. Those ideas can come back again in the future, all is not lost because a vote goes against what you want. The guy is a true loser, but Angle is a pure lunatic. Awful choice for Nevada. Hope they aren't as stupid as she is.

Nevada, let's sit down and have a talk. This is not a partisan issue. Sharon Angle has no business being in the Senate. The 9/11 terrorists did not come through the Canadian border. That's been well debunked. But even if it were true, her ad is clearly not about the Canadian border. It's about the Mexican border. Those are Mexicans in the ad. Do us all a favor Nevada and do not elect candidates to office from either party if they lack the most basic abilities to speak factually.
