Jim DeMint criticized for comments on gay and sexually active single teachers

Gay groups and women's group are calling on Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) to apologize for comments he made Friday about who should and shouldn't be in classrooms.

At a 2004 debate, DeMint declared that openly gay people should not be teaching public school. "We need the folks that are teaching in schools to represent our values," he said. DeMint later added that he "would have given the same answer when asked if a single woman, who was pregnant and living with her boyfriend, should be hired to teach my third grade children."

At the time, the Senate candidate apologized: "[S]ometimes my heart disengages from my head and I say something I shouldn't - and that's what happened yesterday. I clearly said something as a dad that I just shouldn't have said. And I apologize." His campaign manager added that DeMint was raised by a single mother and was not opposed to unwed mothers teaching.

But last week, DeMint said that he had been privately encouraged by reaction to his words.

"[N]o one came to my defense," he said at at a rally. "But everyone would come to me and whisper that I shouldn't back down. They don't want government purging their rights and their freedom to religion."

Jimmy LaSalvia of the gay Republican group GOProud told CBS News that he saw DeMint's comment as a reaffirmation of his original statement -- that gays and unwed mothers should not be allowed to teach children. "I don't know anybody in 2010 who thinks that," he said.

"Sexist bigots like Sen. Jim DeMint don't belong in the United States Congress," said National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill. "He thinks gay women and men and sexually active single women should be banned from teaching, but he said nothing about sexually active, single straight men."

"It is salt in the wound in our community," said Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. "It's irresponsible for Sen. DeMint to reassert this position in this day and age. I would ask him to apologize."

"What matters in the workplace is your ability to do your job, yet you can be fired for your sexual orientation in 29 states and for your gender identity in 38. I can't imagine what people think is 'moral' about job discrimination," said the Human Rights Campaign in a statement.

Tom Clements, the Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate, weighed in. "The public has the right to know the full extent of DeMint's plans to put public employees to a morals test and he should reveal details of who he would target and what the criteria for judgment are," said Clements. "DeMint's efforts to push his own zealous beliefs on all of us clearly demonstrate the extent of his radical agenda and show that he is not fit to be a senator." (Clements joined the race in response to Democrats' disappointment with their surprise candidate, Alvin Greene.)

DeMint has positioned himself as a conservative kingmaker, wading into Republican primaries and thumbing his nose at the GOP establishment. Here's a gallery of candidates endorsed by DeMint to watch this fall.

Waterloo Jim DeMint says people are whispering in his ear. My uncle was hearing voices too, but he got cured when he stopped smoking pot. That could be Waterloo's problem too, or maybe its just the wind whistling thru the hole in his head.

DeMint is worried by the aggressiveness of the Homosexual community. They are without a doubt trying to teach young people that it is irrational to criticize homosexuality. Gay teachers are the least of the problem, as most are discreet. The biggest problem is that the NEA and AFT want to impose the gay-lesbian agenda on the public schools and as the most powerful component of the left wing of the Democratic Party --they spend more on lobbying than the biggest corporations combined--they have the means to do so.

"I remember the days when married pregnant women couldn't teach either."

The Tea Party is just the Taliban in another package. People like DeMint won't be happy until we all live in the Stone Age...which is why the Tea Party's main goal is to promote anarchy and hatred for the government.

South Carolina gave us the Civil War, our costliest conflict in terms of the human life, and as far as DeMint is concerned, another even bigger Great Depression or Civil War would be a blessing from God.

In the good old days in some states single women could teach but once they were married they had to quit. And there were often bans on Catholics or Jews teaching as well, if not by formal rule, by practice.Comparing this conduct to today's shows that while we've come a long way we still have a long way to go.

another exciting quote from FormerDemocrat...

considering there are roughtly 100 nations governments that have some form of "socialism", what exactly "drains anything it touches"? Libraries, public fire departments, unemployment insurance, wodows and orphan funs such as Washington, JEfferson, and Adam proposed? Perhaps the military penion fund during the revolutionary war? - Obviously since those men were no longer "working"? You over broad comment is laughable. Many "socialist" governments have a great standard of living, better healthcare, greater GDP,etc? Giving back to the community for a greater good is a workable soultion, the devil, as always, is in the detials. Look at Germany, Canada, Sweden, all with a a higher education rate, longer life span, etc. Obvioulsy we need a free market economy that grows business and under writes personal development, but that is only one leg of that devlopment.

So he equates the prohibition of gay or single women teachers as "freedom of religion". How is this view different from Sharia Law?

If you think gay teachers are wrong, then home school, or form a commune, or something. Keep your regressive practices to yourself.

Is it REALLY necessary for children to know the sexual orientation of their teachers?

In all the time that I went to school I never knew the sexual orientation of any of my teachers, and the only way you knew if your teacher was married or not was if you called her "Mrs." or "Miss".

When I was growing up I can't recall ever knowing if a person was homosexual either.

Why must all of this personal information be forced upon children these days.

Can't kids just go to school and learn without having to get involved with their teachers' personal and private lives?

Yuck.

If being gay and having unmarried sex disqualifies you from being a teacher, than believing in such asshattery disqualifies you from being a US Senator.

SC should be embarrassed by this joke of a human being.

Asked to comment on DeMint's remarks, his Democrat challenger Alvin Greene had this to say:

"Bdeah, bdeah, bheah."

Posted by: screwjob21 | October 6, 2010 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Why not ask the Democratic nominee for Senate who is running against DeMint to respond? The Democratic Party of South Carolina has a nominee. There is nothing that prevents him from issuing a statement describing the Party's position.

The problem is their nominee isn't exceptionally smart. He's black and kind of slow. According to party practices, before anyone can speak in opposition to hate, he or she must be smart enought to be a Democrat.

And average Americans, angry that the Dems have come up short with full recovery in two years, will return these yo-yo Republic Party freaks to power. Stupidity has no bounds in the USA, it seems.

Do I really have to point out the obvious?

If arrogant elitist folks like Jim DeMint wouldn't be out there blocking gay marriage then all us 'living in sin' gays could be married.

Problem solved, right?

And exactly what American values do taxpaying law-abiding American gays not possess that is a criteria for being a teacher?

I'm wondering if the good Senator could elaborate.

jeez-louise!

If you want your children's teachers to adhere to whatever religious code you follow (the earth is flat, only straight-married-white-people should have sex, etc.), send your kid to your church/temple/mosque's school!

Can't he just run for Chief Dogcatcher of SC or something that won't give him a national platform? Somedays I can't stand the power of the internet. OY!

What happened to the old Dixiecrat Party of the 1940's and 1950's?.......they all became Republicans.

Is this truly all that South Carolina has? No wonder if it were not for the beaches, it would be a dump. Mr. DeMint is a poor character with even more poor moral substance!

Republican candidates and some Republican state legislatures want women to birth their rapists' babies and their fathers' babies. If Republicans are in charge - women, get ready for the Teabagger burkhas!

This is his membership in C Street/The Family/The Fellowship talking.

When is the press going to start asking ALL of these cult members questions about their opinions of the crazy things their cohorts say and do?

They should all take the heat for what they learn at Doug Coe's knee.THAT'S who they are loyal to, not the USA.

Conservatism is a social disease.

Here's the latest kookiness from the tea baggers: their candidate for Senate in Alaska, Joe Miller, wants to REPEAL THE SEVENTEENTH AMENDMENT. Wants us to go back to having state legislatures choosing Senators. Apparently this "populist" tea party movement isn't comfortable with the people themselves voting.

http://newsminer.com/bookmark/9780231-U-S-Senate-candidate-Joe-Miller-s-support-for-repealing-17th-Amendment-draws-criticism

What's next Joe? Ending women's suffrage? Slavery back on the table? You tea partiers just can't get us back to the 18th century fast enough, can you?

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., makes me long for the days Strom Thurmond, also of South Carolina. Never bushing thought I would prefer Thurmond to any American. Thurmond was further right than made any sense.
DeMint the Demented makes even wackos seem reasonable -- relative only to DeMint.

There has been a misunderstanding here. D-N.C. stands for "Demented- No Clue" not "Democrat- North Carolina."

"We need the folks that are teaching in schools to represent our values," he said.

- blatent and hateful homophobia
- a "Christian" theocracy for America
- another pre-emptive war in Iraq
- education and health care are "socialism" while propping up defense contractors in Bush's depression with an addiction to endless war is not.
- a return to back ally abortions
- Constitutional right for Glenn Beck Christians and Fred Phelps but not for gay, Mexican and Muslim citizens

ZERO TOLERANCE - no weapons or hateful teabaggers in the classroom

bs2004, DeMint is a Republican from South Carolina...not a Democrat (or DINO) from North Carolina. What we have here is WaPo reporter Rachel Weiner with zero knowledge of lawmakers on the Hill and a WaPo editor who is either lazy or equally unknowledgeable of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate.

Posted by: PattiFink1 | October 6, 2010 12:29 PM | Report abuse

EDITOR, EDITOR! DeMint is a REPUBLICAN, and a Taliban member at that.

I hope that our troops get home from Afghanistan soon, so they can mop up the Taliban's English-speaking faction here in the U.S.

DeMint is a despicable excuse for an American. He hates everyone's freedom but his own.

Democrat In Name Only.

Posted by: bs2004 | October 6, 2010 12:25 PM | Report abuse

DeMint's 17th century thinking has no place in our Congress. Why do gays and lesbians want to be part of the bigoted, small-minded (and shrinking) GOP?

Posted by: jckdoors | October 6, 2010 12:18 PM | Report abuse

It is a sad day when the WP falls to the depths of Fox "News" in "reporting" scandals in DC. [Generally they go through the first day of a scandal on the Hill with a D- rather than a R- in the crawl at the bottom of the screen.]

1. DeMint is from SOUTH Carolina, not NORTH Carolina. As one of the original thirteen states, some respect should be due to the differences in geography.

2. DeMint is REPUBLICAN, not a Democrat. It may be shocking to some that this is possible, but to a WP reporter who works the Hill beat?? Shame on you.

Posted by: NCTarHeel1 | October 6, 2010 12:11 PM | Report abuse

Jim "DeMented" is a "poster-boy" for what will happen if the "Repbaggers" take over the Congress.

As an elected official, his comments give bigots & racist "tacit-legality" to engage in "hate-crimes" against gays & blacks.

This is more of the same behavior we saw when the "Rebaggers" spit on John Lewis and called him a "Dirty N".

What this is about is a return to the "Jim Crow" laws & the open lynching of gays and blacks.

Posted by: hayden1 | October 6, 2010 12:00 PM | Report abuse

Suppose the man that impregnated the teacher is himself a teacher should he be allowed in the class room? Does this apply to the Deminted family? Are Jim's gay family members still allowed to teach. Would he fire his daughter if she were in this situation. Should gays be allowed to participate in forming conservative policy?
Would he fire Liz Cheney?

Posted by: vwallen@bellatlantic.net | October 6, 2010 11:58 AM | Report abuse

De Mint is unqualified for the Senate. Ignorant bigots who push their personal "values" agenda on others are un-American untrustworthy.

Posted by: dcheretic1 | October 6, 2010 11:54 AM | Report abuse

What I agree with is that information on a teacher's sex life should not be privy to the students. I would be outraged if my child knew about his teacher's partner and sexual preferences.
