Lawmakers and the 'birther'/Muslim myths (Updated)

Updated: 1:12 p.m. 8/30/2010

A recent poll shows that of the approximately 20 percent of Americans who wrongly believe that President Obama is a Muslim, a majority said they learned this from the media. But the media are not alone when it comes to promoting or insinuating falsehoods about the president's religion and, by extension, his birthplace.

We've collected a list of lawmakers past and present and high-profile political operatives whose comments have helped fuel the debate. Most either said outright that the president is a Muslim, that he is not a U.S. citizen or appeared to leave open the possibility that either falsehood could be true. Several of the officials later issued statements saying that they don't doubt the president's citizenship. Feel free to let us know of others that we may have missed in the comments below:

Tim Walberg, former representative of and now congressional candidate for Michigan's 7th district
Update (Oct. 13, 12:13 p.m.): ThinkProgress posted video of Walberg telling a small crowd at a campaign stop that he takes the president "at his word that he is an American citizen," but goes on to say: "I don't know why it's not resolved, other than the fact that the president hasn't resolved it yet." Wahlberg then goes on to mention impeachment as a possible means by which to force the president's hand on the disclosure of information: "The Executive has an awful lot of power to keep from showing certain things unless the courts will stand up to him. Or unless Congress in majority will stand up, up to and including impeachment. And Republicans don't have that majority." (ThinkProgress)

Todd Herman, RNC new media director
Update (August 24, 4:28 p.m.): Hotline On Call reports that the RNC has formally responded, saying that the organization does not question that president Obama is a Christian. (Hotline On Call)

Update (August 24, 4:12 p.m.): Herman appears to have deleted his twitter account. The image of the original tweet is above.

Herman tweeted the following on his personal twitter account: "Watch - Is @BarackObama amongst the 20% who think he's Muslim? http://gop.am/5TXi #tcot." The link goes to a video posted on YouTube of a 2008 interview where then-presidential candidate Obama says the phrase "my Muslim faith," but clarifies to say it is a suggestion being put forth by others. Herman's account comes with the disclaimer that posts to this particular account are not to be construed as statements made on behalf of the RNC.

Rep. Nathan Deal (R-Ga.)
In this YouTube video Deal is asked about a letter he sent to President Obama asking for proof-of-citizenship. In the video Deal says, "What I have asked him to do is tell me where I can ask my constituents to go to see authentic documentation that he says satisfy their curiosity." Deal then goes on to say, "I'm not questioning his legitimacy to serve as President. I would think he'd like to clear this up in as unequivocal fashion as possible. That's all I'm asking him to do." (Talking Points Memo/Thanks to commenter "vexvet")

J.D. Hayworth
, Republican Senate candidate
Hayworth is in a primary race with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), and on January 26 appeared on MSNBC's Hardball. During the interview Hayworth said, "No, I -- look. I'm just saying the president should come forward with the information, that's all. Why must we depend on the governor of Hawaii?" But Hayward changed positions when he appeared on FOX News's "The O'Reilly Factor," on February 26 when he said, "Look, Barack Obama's the 44th president of the United States. His election was certified. I believe he was born in Hawaii. I made certain statements on the air to -- to provoke conversation. That's what happens in broadcasting." Then, in April, Hayworth said an Arizona bill calling on presidents to submit proof of their natural born citizenship did not go far enough. (Talking Points Memo)

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.)
In Aug. 2009 Franks wrote a post for the conservative blog RedState.org defending himself against reports that he wanted to press a lawsuit over the president's right to serve. "I was one of the few Members of Congress that was willing, if I could come up with a way to prove that Barack Obama was not born in this country, I was willing to go into a lawsuit," wrote Franks, "And one of the things that happened, about three days before we were going to launch a lawsuit, is that we found several different newspapers that had shown that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii two years after it became a state. Now, there was no way to have forged that...I just don't have evidence that shows me that he was not born here. Now, I know that everybody says that they've got it, but I've never seen it." (The Washington Independent)

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.)
In 2009, when asked whether President Obama was a citizen, McHenry said at a townhall meeting, "I haven't seen enough evidence one way or the other." McHenry's office later released a statement saying, "As I stated last night, I have not carefully reviewed the evidence as a jurist would. However, from what I have read, I have absolutely no reason to question President Obama's citizenship. I anticipate that as a legal matter the courts will continue to come to the same conclusion." (Talking Points Memo)

Rep. James Inhofe (R-Okla.)
In July 2009, Politico reported that Inhofe saying of the 'birther' movement, "They have a point...I don't discourage it. ... But I'm going to pursue defeating [Obama] on things that I think are very destructive to America." Inhofe later put out a statement clarifying his remarks that read, "The point that they make is the Constitutional mandate that the U.S. president be a natural born citizen, and the White House has not done a very good job of dispelling the concerns of these citizens," he said. "My focus is on issues where I can make a difference to stop the liberal agenda being pushed by President Obama."

Kim Lehman, Iowa GOP committee member
Lehman posted the following to her twitter page in response to a Politico report regarding the president's faith: "@politico you're funny. They must pay you a lot to protect Obama. BTW he personally told the muslims that he IS a muslim. Read his lips." The DesMoines Register later reported that Lehman said in an interview that her personal opinion didn't matter, "He's the one that the news is about. It isn't about me. Call the president. ... Say, 'Are you a Christian or not?'...If I'm wrong, I'm more than happy to say, 'Oh, I'm wrong.'" Asked about the tweet, Lehman says she is referring to a speech Obama gave in Cairo last summer. But, in that speech, the president does not say he is a Muslim.

Republican House candidate Tom Ganley
Ganley, of Ohio, told Roll Call "I don't have a position on whether he's a Muslim." A spokeswoman later told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer that Ganley does not believe the president is a Muslim.

Sarah Palin
The former vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor said in a 2009 interview that the president's birth certificate was "a fair question." (Politico)

Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio)
In this video, Schmidt appeared to agree with a woman who claimed that Obama could not be president "by our Constitution." Schmidt later issued a press release stating, "The President is indeed a Citizen of this country and constitutionally qualified to be President of the United States."

Arizona state Rep. Judy M. Burges (R)
CNN reported that in April, Burges said, through a spokesman, that an amendment she introduced was "an attempt to bring back transparency and confidence in the electoral process." The amendment would have required presidential candidates to provide documents, including a birth certificate, to show they were legal citizens of the United States.

Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla.)
He introduced a bill that would have required presidential hopefuls to produce "a copy of the candidate's birth certificate."

Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-Tex.)
Expressed support for Posey's bill that would have required presidential candidates to produce a birth certificate.

Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.)
Burton co-sponsored Posey's bill. In July, the Washington Independent reported that a spokesman for Burton called the bill "a good idea," saying: "If candidates provided that information to the Federal Election Commission you wouldn't have all this hullabaloo. You don't want to needlessly expose presidents to crazy conspiracy theories."

Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.)
Campbell has become well known for this heated exchange over the president's birth certificate with MSNBC host Chris Matthews.

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.)
Inhofe told Politico that birthers "have a point."

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.)
Shelby told the Cullman Times last year: "Well his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven't seen any birth certificate. ...You have to be born in America to be president." A spokesman later clarified, "While [Shelby] hasn't personally seen the president's birth certificate, he is confident that the matter has been thoroughly examined."

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.)
Co-sponsored the Posey bill that would have required candidates to produce a birth certificate. A spokesman for Blackburn said the congresswoman did not doubt the president's citizenship.

Reps. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-Wash.), Charles Boustany (R-La.), Aaron Schock (R-Ill.), Dave Reichert (R-Wash.), Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) and Greg Harper (R-Miss.)
All are featured in this video produced by the progressive Web site Firedoglake and, to varying degrees, express doubts about Obama's citizenship.

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.)
The Associated Press reported that Vitter said that although he doesn't personally have legal standing to bring litigation, he supports "conservative legal organizations and others who would bring that to court." He said, "I think that is the valid and most possibly effective grounds to do it." He added later that the debate could distract from policy issues.

Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.)
Broun questioned during an interview in March whether Obama was a citizen. The interview was initially spotted by the progressive organization Think Progress and later reported by Politico:

"Is he a Christian?" [Sirius XM host Pete] Dominick then asked.

"I don't know that," Broun responded, explaining that "I'm a Christian but only me and the Lord know that for sure."

Bill Hudak, a Republican congressional candidate from Massachusetts
Hudak told a local paper that he believed the president was born in Kenya and had ties to radical Islam.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli
A recording of Cuccinelli features him saying, "Someone is going to have to come forward with nailed-down testimony that he was born in Place B, wherever that is." Cuccinelli later clarified his remarks in statement: "I absolutely believe that President Obama was born in the United States. I don't buy into the claims that he wasn't. On the recording, I was asked a hypothetical legal question, and I gave a hypothetical legal answer in response," (Politics Daily/Talking Points Memo) (Thanks to commenter "vexvet" for the tip.)

Morgan Philpot, Utah GOP House candidate
Update (August 24, 4:28 p.m.): Slate's David Weigel reports that Philpot joked at a Freedomworks event about President Obama's birthplace. (Slate)

greatgran1- You are the one spreading lies. If you are really a great grandmother than I pity your grandchildren. To have someone so filled with hate as a grandparent. And your rant is filled with hatred.

The president does not "hide bills" because the president isn't the one who passes them. Congress does. All bills are online for your perusal if you care enough for facts to go look for them.

The largest majority of people did indeed want what this Congress has passed because we voted for this president with the full knowledge that health care reform was going to be one of the biggest problems he was going to tackle. The right has lied about what it does- after they fought so hard to get it changed from what most of us wanted to what it is - and then refused to vote on what they helped to create. You can't forget the weeks and weeks in committee hammering out the bill. Republicans were fully present and they are the ones who got the bill so watered down and were disingenuous at best when they wouldn't vote for what they created.

You have no problems throwing around accusations toward the president that aren't true so I'll give you a challenge- read the health care bill and show me where it says anything about "death squads" or most of the other BS the right keeps spouting. Please read it yourself and find those things in it. People like the perennially stupid Sarah Paylin make those stupid untrue claims- but she can't point to it either. I'm not so certain she is capable of reading the bill- she would probably have to have someone read it to her. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are capable of reading it yourself. And while you are at it- instead of repeating internet BS, show your facts about where the president has lied. Can you do that? With real facts- not something someone said on the internet? I know you can't do it because it isn't true- but you will keep spreading lies anyway. Too bad you aren't honest enough to just say you don't like the president for whichever real reason is behind it- whether it is because he is black or you just don't like his politics-either of which is valid if honest. It may not be politically correct to say you are racist, but I admire honesty. Try it sometime.

TexRancher and all the rest who keep posting these worn out lies, distortions and half truths. Call the US State Department and ask them- I'm sure they have the information at their fingertips after the question has been raised so many times- in 1981 there was not a travel ban to Pakistan. The claims that there were are lies. Pakistan's Embassy can tell you the same thing. It is not true that there was a travel ban. They welcomed Americans as tourists and a 30 day travel Visa was available when you arrived in the country.

For the birthers who claim that the Certificate of Live Birth that the president did show, that has been examined by more than one fact checking entity and that the governor of Hawaii and the Director of Hawaii's Department of Health have unequivocally stated the president was born in Honolulu on the date his certificate shows. Added to that is the announcement that was placed in two newspapers back in 1961 showing a boy born to his parents. The claims that people like that crazy Orly Taitz keep making a false and not the least bit factual as courts all across the land have declared. She was sanctioned by the federal judge for $20,000.00 because she kept filing frivolous lawsuits and refused to listen to his warnings. To continue to make these foolish and at this point stupid, claims is a waste of your time and the space you are taking up on the internet. The president was born in a US state and is therefore a natural born citizen. There is no requirement that both his parents be US citizens and it really doesn't matter where his father was from, his mother was a US citizen, born in Kansas. He was not adopted- either at birth or later by his stepfather- though it would not have mattered- a parent can't give up a natural born US citizens citizenship. The president spent his life in the US except for a short 4 year period when he was a child.

He has stated time after time that he is a follower of the Christian faith and has been for a long time. To try to say that the Chicago church he attended wasn't Christian and I would bet there are a whole bunch of members of that church who would set you straight in no time. Every predominantly black church I have ever attended has given me the impression that there would be plenty of good folk within who could set you straight pronto. In other words, this birther crap is a dead horse and even if you keep beating it-it will never get up and run.

Obama does not qualify to be a US President because he does not meet the qualifications of Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution.

Obama is not a Natural Born Citizen.

Obama's father was a British subject.

The founders used Vattel's Law of Nations to define a Natural Born Citizen.

Must be born on American soil and both parents US citizens.

This was reiterated in Senate Resolution 511 of 2008 which was introduced by Obama along with other Senators, to declare McCain was a Natural Born Citizen. In that Resolution it stated both McCain's parents were US citizens.

There is a difference between:

US Citizen: Born on US soil.

Naturalized Citizen: Foreign born who becomes US citizen.

Natural Born Citizen: Born on US soil and both parents are US citizens at time of child's birth.

Everyone is ignoring this fact.

The Republicans because they have a candidate or two who's parents weren't US citizens at the time of their birth.

The Democrats are ridiculing and intimidating anyone who broaches this subject.

And all are ignoring Supreme Court cases who have settled this dispute.

In the end, it really doesn't matter where Obama was born. He is still not qualified to be US President.

To JoeT1 who wrote "If you can seriously state that a Certificate of Birth isn't a Birth Certificate, you can believe anything." When I applied for my first Passport, I produced an ORIGINAL birth certificate in color with raised, stamped gold seal. The passport agency came back to me that they required a "certificate of Live Birth" sent directly from the State records. Experience doesn't require that I "believe anything."

"Feel free to let us know of others that we may missed in the comments below:" What you "missed" is the direct quotes, on tape, from the mouths of POTUS AND FLOTUS and democrats about POTUS's religion and country of birth. AND, you missed the documents signed by POTUS to enter college as a foreign student. Of course there are hundreds more in the records blocked even when they are ordered by the Freedom of Information Act. Blatently biased articles like this merely reinforce the shills in the msm.

Too many questions and not enough answers:
Why did he seal his records? What passport did he travel on to Paskistan (On the U.S. no travel list at the time) in 1981? How were his travels paid for at that time and by whom? How was his education paid for and by whom?
There are more like his Selective Service Registration and his Social Security Number being issued to someone else, but the first are enough give us a better idea who this guy really is...

The Hawaiian COLB is not a birth certificate and is NOT even recognized in Hawaii for some legal transactions...

So why has The One spent nearly 2 million dollars to keep it and his passport and school records sealed?

The question could be settled so easily if he would release that data....

If you can seriously state that a Certificate of Birth isn't a Birth Certificate, you can believe anything. That's what HI and tons of other states call them. The one Obama has posted is the one and only version of a birth certificate that anyone can get, and it's valid for all purposes, because it's the only one you can get, period. They used to look different, and if he had ordered one when they looked different, his would look different. why is that so hard to grasp?

he hasn't spent a dime opposing release of anything. Orly Taitz just got fined by the U.S. Supreme Court for pursuing her birther suit because the court found it frivolous and in bad faith.

Only God knows for sure if Obama is a Christian. As for being born in Kenya, I suspect that a few mortals know (his paternal grandmother, for instance, stated that she was present when he was born there).

No president of the United States has ever has so little in common with other Americans than Barack Obama. Not only was his father a foreigner but a Muslim who did not remain in the country to help rear his child, who had almost no connection with his son. His mother was intellectually and otherwise alienated from the United States, married another foreigner, and another Muslim, and raised her son for many years in Indonesia. She then virtually abandoned him, letting him be raised by grandparents in Hawaii, the American state that is most remote of all. When he went to college on the mainland, his closest
buddy was a Muslim, and when he transferred it was to Columbia and there he was virtually invisible, having very little impact on those who attended with him. His closest connection to the country is through his wife, who is black American. His religious connection in that community is through a hate-filled sect that is but slightly removed theologically and emotionally from the black Muslims. Until Iowa, many black Americans held him at arm's length, because they felt his strangeness. Now they cling to him as symbol of their inclusion, but he has little in common with men like Jesse Jackson or the ordinary black Baptist in the pews. This is a strange man, and every ordinary American who meets him sees what the elites are blind to. He does not seem to be "one of us."

Count me in the 43% "do not know" category. I can tell you one thing, Obama is not Christian. He has never exhibited any Christian values. He has lied, double talked, used trickery to pass bills no one wants, hid behind closed doors, hid the bills, bribed to get votes, and made appointment during recess of Congress. And you cannot call that Jeremiah Wright's church a Christian church so filled with hate and the idiotic belief in liberation theology. I sure would not make fun of those who think he is a muslim. Who knows? And frankly, I do not care if the man worships a rock behind the door. He might as well since he has no Christian values. And besides, no one listens to him anymore. When your actions or works do not match your words, people just tune you out and turn you off. It is like an annoying noise you hear but do not hear. He is political toast.

The article begins with the unsubstatiated assertion that 20% of the people "wrongly" believe that Obama is a Muslim. The author does not know the answer on this question- especially since it is part of the Muslim political regligion to disregard religous practices in order to deceive the enemy- the enemy being cultures that are not adherent to governance by Sharia Law. The 911 terorists spent time in Las Vegas and successfully concealed themselves in the fabric of American life. If Jihad can acheive the destruction that it acheived on 911 - it can also operate through stealth and even conive to have one of their own elected to high offices in our country through acts of calculated deception. That Obama has deceived the public on numerous other counts is indisputable. He is not the "moderate" that he posed as in order to get elected. It is reasonable to speculate that he may actually be a Muslim. It is not justified to make unsubstatiated claims that such speculation is "wrong"- since no one , at this point really knows and there is enough evidence in Obama's actions to justify the speculation.

If Obama wants to stop the speculation about his birth- all he has to do is to permit one of the court cases to proceed to the discovery phase wherein he will be requested to present his full papers so that they can be examined by experts in documentation authentication. The fact that Obama has spent a great deal of money to stop the court cases from proceeding to the discovery phase gives further credence to the specualtion that Obama is not a natural born citizen of United States of America.

We no longer have news, we have soap operas. Every poll that is taken from this point forward should also have to print HOW and what questions were asked. Any polls I have been invited to complete have been skewed to give the answer the poll-takers wanted so your only option was to agree with them in a crazy slanted way, so mine like this went into the trash. This crap from formerly responsible news sources needs to stop. They have become gossip mongerers. Disgusting and shameful.

massmedia77,

You might be missing the point. blended-race people trigger the hostility of racists on all sides. some racists hate one part of him, other racists hate some other part. Obama seems to be all things to all people with axes to grind.

F Graham's "seed of Islam" theory may be the best yet, though. Sort of like a pompous Jeff Foxworthy, Graham's got "He Might Be a Muslim" ready to roll as a standup act. Apparently, it's all about the seed, and all fertilizer.

Well, isn't it interesting that one of our national political parties has nothing more to talk about than a birth certificate.
You would think the country didn't have 9.5% unemployment, two (yes, 2) wars going on, and several other problems.
Republicans prefer to demonize a billion or so people who practice a religion different than their own.
Of course, the thing about Republicans is that they rely on rage and emotional violence to sustain themselves. They feed on it like it was crack cocaine. Which means they will say, and do, ANYTHING and Everything to get their juice.
America has always been filled with people like this, and always, through time, they have been "refudiated".
So, too, with their latest incarnation of evil.

3) “Obama touched on his own Muslim roots,” reported the Associated Press.

For those who understand Sharia law, it is fact that a male child born to a Muslim father is considered a Muslin all of his life. Those who trying to hide this only make fools of themselves. While Obama may have never practiced the religion, under Sharia law, he is a born-Muslim.

When your polls numbers drop into the 40s you can have your minions fudge the numbers a bit.

When your poll numbers are in the 30s you are screwed.

Today Barry the inept bungler reached a new low of 39 percent job approval among men in the Gallup poll.

Fear and hatred are all the GOP has left. Whether its blacks, Hispanics, gays, Muslims, or non-Christians, the GOP regards all of them as "not American." Only white Christians count, and the GOP courts on white Christians. How sad that the Party of Lincoln has devolved into this racist White Power Party.

I have seen President Obama's birth certificate from Hawaii more times than I have seen mine and heard the head of Vital Statistics and the deputy attest to it repeatedly. I am sick of it and right wingers who live in an alternative universe claiming up in down, black is white, day is night, and all thier other backwards nonsense. They need psychiatrists; facts are not relevant to them and that is not something which can be discussed from a sane perspective. Facts are not part of thier reality. So I think we need to quit bothering with them.

There really is a dank air of desperation to all of this.

Here's the truth: Reagan left the nation safe for (real) conservatives. The two Bushes screwed it up with high taxes -- precisely what people DIDN'T want which was why they backed Reagan. Instead of getting their own house in order -- return to Reagan orthodoxy, which was NOT hateful, Reagan couldn't get a tea party endorsement today -- Repubs war desperately trying to smear and stigmatize Obama so that even their eventual suspect nominee (and he/she WILL be suspect, like Palin was clearly flawed -- they seem allergic to sane people these days) will have a shot to win.

The shock of losing to a black man made the stereotypical racist Repubs lose their cottonpickin' minds. They haven't gotten over it yet.

according to your logic, whenever a republican comments on the issue they are automatically supporting it - even when simply responding to media inqueries designed to fillibuster discussion of nearly double digit unemployment.

"no comment" or suggestions that a formal procedure be put in place to satisfy the eligibility provisions of the constitution and make sure that no side-show like this happens again seem perfectly reasonable to me.

the issue is completely media generated - driven by polls commissioned by the media to given themselves something to boost their ratings and avoid talking about the democrats' failures.

And while the country initially proved me wrong by voting Obama in - and as great as a moment it was for all races across the world, I see that we weren’t ready.

To Republicans, I don’t know if you care or not but do you realize what you are doing is making minorities of different races, religions and cultures hate you? For the many good ideas/values you have, how do you expect us to ever vote for you given what you've become?

r wjc1va:

>...And McCain, born in the Canal Zone, an American territory, was grandfathered by a law passed many years ago....

PRESIDENT Obama is a US citizen, having been born in HAWAII. Deal with it, quit whining, and grow UP.
=================

John McCain was born in the Canal Zone while his father, a Navy Admiral was there on duty. That clearly made McCain a US citizen, and legally qualified to be president. The same Democratically controlled US Senate Committee, chaired by John Kerry, that required McCain to endure hearings on his birth, refused of subject Obama to the same questioning, even though Obama never established that he was a citizen.

There is no evidence zip, zero, nada, that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, or anywhere else in the US. If you can find some, The Obama White House would pay you $millions because that is what they have spent preventing legal challenges to Obama's citizenship from coming to court.

By the way, that Certificate of Live Birth that Obama has posted on his web site is worthless. First neither the State of Hawaii, the US State Department, nor the US INS accept a valid Certificate of Live Birth as proof of anything, certainly not citizenship. It is a family instigated document and has as much legal standing as a Hallmark card. Second, the one on Obama's web site is missing thirteen items a legitimate COLB requires, and is printed on a form that was not used by the State of Hawaii until 1980. IT IS CLEARLY A FRAUD.

Posted by: mike85
________________
Hawaii says it isn't a fraud, and it contains every item a COLB requires under Hawaii law. Anyone ever born in HI would get one that looks just like it if they ordered one today. If Obama were to order one today, it would be on the form the state uses today. The one posted was issued on the form being used when it was issued. It is not family instigated, it is issued by the state when you ask the state for a COLB. All the authorities you list accept it for all the purposes you cite, and there is no other document you could possibly get from the state if you wanted one.

Obama hasn't spent a dime doing anything except answering the stupid lawsuits, which he has to do. The primary suit was just thrown out of court as being frivolous and in bad faith, and the U.S. Supreme Court just upheld the trial court's order that the plaintiff, the nutcase Orly Taitz, pay sanctions for wasting the court's time with garbage.

You don't even know what a birth certificate is, you moron. It is a certificate issued by the state, whenever you ask for it, that you were born there, according to their records. An original BC or COLB is simply one that isn't a photocopy, it isn't an "old" one. I am 57, and if I order a BC from the county of my birth, it will be an original, dated some time in 2010. I happen to have one from 1953, but it's no more original than the one I would get today, which, by the way, would look a lot different than the 1953 one.

"If you check President Obama's last trip over-seas, his wife left just after their visit to France. She has yet to accompany him to any Arab country. Think about it. Why is Michelle returning to the states when 'official' trips to foreign countries generally include the First Lady.

"Here's one thought on the matter. While in a Blockbuster renting videos I came across a video called "Obama". There were two men standing next to me and we talked about President Obama. These guys were Arabs, so I asked them why they thought Michele Obama headed home following the President's recent visit to France instead of traveling
On to Saudi Arabia and Turkey with her husband. They told me she could not go to Saudi Arabia, Turkey or Iraq . I said 'Why not? Laura Bush went to Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Dubai'. They said that Obama is a Muslim and therefore he is not allowed to bring his wife into countries that adhere to Sharia Law. Two points of interest here: 1) I thought it interesting that two American Arabs at Blockbuster believe that our President is a Muslim, and 2) who follows a strict Islamic creed. They also said that's the reason he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia. It was a signal to the Muslim world, Acknowledging his religion."

And the same percentage of the American public that thinks Obama is a Muslim thinks the sun revolves around the earth -- according to other Pew Institute surveys, so reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

The underlying problem is that a significant percentage of white Americans think the President is just another uppity n**g*r. In answer to those who, in response to my post, say that I did not read the statute correctly and that it only applies to "citizens" and not natural born ones, the information comes from Title 8 of the U.S. Code of laws. Section 1401 defines the people I listed as those who are "citizens of the United States at birth." In fact I quoted it word for word. It does not mention other citizens, i.e. those naturalized at some point after their birth. Some of your comments attacked me personally as a "typical liberal teacher." Honestly, you do not know me. How do you know my politics. I deal in facts, and the facts are that birthers hurt the conservative movement by making conservatives look like morons. As for not deserving my salary and my future pension, worry not, I live in a state that is working as hard as it can to destroy public education. I will likely have to work until I die. I don't mind. I decided to be a teacher. Despite having two masters degrees and the ability to make more money elsewhere, I stick it out here. I like students. I don't tell them what to believe, only how democracy works and how to come to their own conclusions. Parents have a far greater influence on what young people believe than I ever will. Astonishing that so many people will form fixed opinions about something, to the point of absolute, intransigent certainty, even without any direct knowledge whatsoever.

Some are sure that a birth certificate for President Obama has been produced, and others are just as certain that no such document exists at all... either way, most of us are relying on the hearsay assertions of others.

Considering the vehement, vitriolic opposition to Obama's presidency, it is absurd to argue that he received the nomination of a major party, endured an extended and hard-fought political campaign, and was elected President without having provided proof of any qualifying factor that could seriously be in doubt. Please!

Even demagogues like Palin have had to equivocate and dance around with their implications that...though they weren't saying it was so, there might just be something fishy about Obama's citizenship after all. For me, that is as good as proof OF Obama's citizenship as examining, first hand, his original birth certificate in a public records repository in Hawaii.

1) Is there any other american president, in US's history, who has shared identical doubts regarding his religion, birth certificate, service to his country, etc.?
2) Why is it so difficult to refute all doubts by just presenting a copy of pres. Obama's birth certificate to the public.
3)If, according to the american law, only native americans born in the US can run for presidency, why is this crucial issue is not part of a public hearing procedure in the Senate or Congress, during which the final candidates from all parties are obliged, by law, to answer all questions
regarding their compatibility for the presidency in accordance with the american law.
4)Why did the president, who is supposed to be representing the wishes of the majority of the US citizens(or is it not!!) decided to take a stand with those in favour of the Cordova house! Is he not challenging too the wishes of, at least, 75 percent of the americans?

Interesting that JohntheBaptist II & theoldmansays apparently can't find their keyboard caps lock. Bet it was John pouring that water that got the key stuck in place.

At any rate, I thank the author for showing 20 examples of Republican Equals Liar.

Also, these folks suffer from the Liar's Curse:
It's not that no one can believe what they say, it's that they are incapable of believing anyone else.

Oh and, for the person who mentioned Georgie Bush, Dubbya and I were born in New Haven, CT about a month and a mile apart. He at Grace/New Haven Hospital and I at St. Raphael's [Protestants & Catholics didn't go to the same hospital then. Just wasn't done! I'm not sure who was more worried about the other.]

Well, at least he says he was. And, I've never seen his birth certificate. Yet, I'll take him at his word (even if he did lie about the WMD's in Iraq}. That's even though both New Haven and he don't mention the other except that he came back to go to college there.

And New Haven likes it that way. There are sometimes things about native sons that they don't want to mention. The Mayor is, also, very happy that I, a life long Dem, live in the next town now.

But, Dubbya, at least I and Roger Sherman are proud of the place. You must remember him. Republicans are always mentioning the "Founding Fathers".

He's the only Founding Father who signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. But then Republicans like to talk about those three documents and then ignore them.

And, you get nervous when anybody asks where you were born. Maybe it's 'cause you ignored those documents so much you got people killed with the lies about Iraq. So, maybe you couldn't look Roger in the eye after all.

I wonder, if I go to the Hall of Records, if they'd let me see if Georgie really was born in America.

Say what you want about the "birthers". But ask yourself why anyone actually born in this country would spend a million dollars legally opposing lawsuits demanding the birth certificate?
Why would anyone do that instead of just spending a few bucks for a certified copy of the original?
To not do so is either highly suspicious or down right dumb.
Which is it?

Govteacher - as a teacher, you should actually read the statute before you announce you've solved the problem. The section you cite defines "citizen" not "natural born citizen", the definition of which requires a more nuanced constitutional analysis than just reading a statute.

Posted by: lou12 | August 21, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

According to the US Code of laws a natural born citizen is defined as follows:
Anyone born inside the United States (except for the children of foreign diplomats)
Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person's status as a citizen of the tribe
Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national
Any one born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year
Any one found in the U.S. under the age of five, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21
Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)
A final, historical condition: a person born before 5/24/1934 of an alien father and a U.S. citizen mother who has lived in the U.S.
Since Obama's mother was a natural born citizen and lived in the US at least five years he could have been born on the moon and still be qualified. Also, if he were born before statehood, he would have still been born in Hawaii as a possession of the US, thus qualifying him as a nat. born citizen, since Hawaii became a possession in 1898. He certaintly isn't that old. Any elected official should know this. Which means that they are purposely fanning flames, or they are too ignorant to hold office. BTW, McCain was born in Panama.

The birther movement is naught but a strategic campaign of disinformation being utilized in an overall attempt to delegitimize the government as it is currently populated. In effect, they want to overthrow the current, legitimately qualified and elected government of the U.S., and are therefore guilty of treason. Moreover the birther movement is a betrayal of the public trust, and thus the work of traitors, for whom it is said the lowest level of perdition is reserved.

Take that, forces of treasonous, traitorous disinformation masquerading under a guise of self-righteous indignation.

First of all I resent the Australian poster and Murdoch both for questioning our President.

Second, even if Obama walked around with his birth certificate in his hand the people posting here for the most part wouldn't want to believe it and would still call it a hoax.

What they want is to have had a Republican witness to the birth and nothing less would make them happy. So it's just politics as usual from the Republicans. They lie and they get away with it. A baseball player lies and they want to crucify him.

The Conservative priorities are truly screwed up. They're only interested in mudslinging and have yet to come up with any constructive ideas except for the usual tax cuts and wars to improve our quality of life. They only pretend to be patriotic they don't really value the ideals that made this country great.

This is a silly story. The opening lines show the writer's bias identifying those who believe Obama is a Muslim as "those who wrongly believe". I'm not saying I believe he is a Muslim or not, I don't know, but there are facts which could support an argument that he is.

Half of the lawmaker's cited were saying something akin to what I said - they don't know - if it's an honest answer, they shouldn't be faulted. If they are using the discussion to fire up the less intelligent, well that's just bad.

As to the president, I think some may be looking for ways to cast him as an outsider because they don't like what he's doing to the country, but can't articulate their policy concerns. Calling Obama a muslim is no different than an unsophisticated liberal calling Bush a hick - and plenty of democrat lawmakers played off Bush's background, family ties and quirks.

Let's face it, this administration is a failure and people are scared, so there's going to be name calling - there always is. To make it anything more than that is, as I said at the outset, just silly.

Quite a dilemma Mr. Obama has got himself entangled in. He's liberally ingratiated himself into Black 'Christian' churches; been influenced by the Muslim leanings of his family, his father, Rev. Wright---a former Muslim, and Michelle's Black Theology; and apparently eaten liberally at this buffet of religious offerings.

Now he's screwed...he's got to pick a church to worship at...I don't think he can do a Mosque one week, a Black Baptist church the next, and play golf next or join Sotomeyer at Mass.

I have no idea what it takes to become a Muslim...what's the litmus test; is there a baptism or conversion ceremony???

Just as currency has been dulicated by counterfeiters over the years, so could any other "official document". Obama could very well have been born on the island of Oahu as is stated. The date on his advertised certificate is 08/04/1961.
It originally could have read 08/04/1959.
This would make him ineligible to be President, because it was just prior to Hawaii becoming a state.
Why are'nt the officials in Hawaii beleived? Because of this administrations dubious methodology. It's been well reported and recorded. For example, the healthcare issue. It would'nt pass until votes were bought. They call it poitics as usual. In the private sector it's called bribery.

He is a Muslims because, quote "about my Muslim faith" he said so. Must recently in a white House dinner he said referring to the political polls that in his country he knew his rate was very high. People believe what Obama has said. Besides his actions bending backward to please the Muslims speak more than his words. He refused to celebrate the National Day of Prayer, but he celebrate Ramadan. @ mike85 - The presidents Certificate of Live Birth is very much like the one I received after misplacing the old style certificate I had- except his has more info than mine. I used my new certificate for everything I needed it for- including the state I now live in and the passport office. My son used his, just like mine, to replace a lost social security card and for his drivers license. You are very mistaken if you think what the president has isn't valid. The head of the health department in Hawaii and the governor have stated unequivocally that he was born in Hawaii. More than one of his professors at Harvard have spoken about having him as a student. The first book the president wrote- long before he was entered into national politics- talked about he and Michelle still having student loans to pay off after they married. He is a natural born citizen of these United States and was therefore eligible for the office we, the people, elected him to.

Either this disinformation campaign is a deliberate attempt to discredit the president, or the birthers and Muslim believers do not have an idea just how thoroughly a presidential candidate is investigated.

The president has total access to secret data at all security agencies. He is vetted by the FBI, NSA, SS, and CIA. you can be sure that any republican finding a glitch in his security check would have publicized it as soon as it was found.

I suspect this is a deliberate campaign to cast doubt on the president. Of course there are the wingnuts that will believe anything they hear from their favorite talking heads. Most likely they want to believe these slurs and lies.
that is the way they operate, and the students of Herr Himmler are more than happy to help them along.

This whole birther thing and the assumption by some right wingers that the President of United States isn't a Christian is founded on their discomfort that somebody whose skin is darker than theirs got elected to high office. It offends them. Was Washington black? No. Was Jefferson black? No. Obama's election is MORE valid than young Bush's selection by a reactionary Supreme Court. Yet, to some people, Obama shouldn't be in the White House unless he's carrying trays or mopping the latrine. Just another tax-and-spend Liberal, they say, and black to boot.

My comment:
It "ain't happenin'" because the original was lost and the State of Hawaii, quite a few years ago, automated the records and threw out the back-up documents. The State has issued the document that the State issues. The rest of the States and the Federal Government are required by the U.S. Constitution to accept this. Its good enough for the State Department to issue a U.S. passport (as proof of citizenship) along with a separate proof of identity. (The only document that is proof of both is a U.S. Passport. Thus to get a U.S. passport you must produce both proof of citizenship and proof of identity) Its the best document that exists. But then the purpose of the Birther movement isn't to find the truth, its to undermine the Federal Government. (Sedition's an awfully good term for it...)

I was going to leave work shortly to pick up my two young sons. Fortunately, the birthers have shown me the light and I now realize that, since all I have to evidence their births is a pair of "Certificates of Live Birth" issued by the State of Hawaii, they must not have actually been born and I probably just imagined those two c-sections and 5-day hospital stays. Guess I'll go catch a movie, instead, and when I get home there won't be toys strewn all over the living room (but it sure will make me sad).

Smart tactic by the birthers: demand that Obama produce a document that THE STATE OF HAWAII DOESN'T ISSUE. That way, if he doesn't produce it, you can claim he's hiding something, and if he does, you can claim it's suspect because it's the only one of its kind.

I am not a Birther, not even an American citizen and I live in Australia, but I just don't understand why Obama is not facing this issue by just producing the piece of evidence that would stop the Birthers in their tracks.

What is Obama hiding?
============================

Every state is different in how they handle vital records, and although most births are signed off on by the doctor, not every child is even born in a hospital or with a doctor present. But the thing is, most of us who probably did have a doctor's signature on the original birth certificate either never had the original piece of paper or have lost it. Why no problem? Because you can always get a certified copy from the state's Vital Records Department.

Obama has shown that one from the beginning. In Hawaii it doesn't say "Birth Certificate." It says "Certificate of Live Birth," just like all other Hawaiian birth certificates. The birthers cannot accept this. They still want to see what they think is the "real" one.

They are in grave denial.

if the President is NOT a citizen, why doesn't the MEDIA or PRESS have the capacity to REPORT THE TRUTH of the matter?

http://www.greatdreams.com/2008/obama-birth_certificate_2.jpg

if the President IS a citizen, why doesn't the MEDIA or PRESS have the capacity to REPORT THE TRUTH of the matter?

what are you racists up to?

"What is racism?

Racism is racial prejudice that has been incorporated into the activities and procedures of major institutions, corporations, social systems (such as those related to housing, education, and health), and other arenas of major social activity (such as politics, the media, finance, and banking). Racism serves both to discriminate against ethnic minorities and to maintain advantages and benefits for White Americans."

"In short, the theory of the new racism holds that some blatant forms of racism have declined in recent decades, and the label "racist" has become something that most individuals want to avoid. However, even while trying to avoid the label of being "racist," individuals continue to hold deep, underlying negative stereotypes and feelings toward African Americans and other ethnic minorities. These more hidden stereotypes are symbolized in coded political views that seem to uphold respectable values, but continue to support institutionalized forms of racism. "

"No, institutional racism is not any one person's fault, but it is the responsibility of everyone participating in that system. It is especially the responsibility of those benefiting from institutional racism. It is the individual, psychological level of prejudice that allows us to justify the unfairness and destructiveness of institutionalized racism. Individual-level prejudice allows us to justify the outcome of unfair systems (“those people deserve what they get...they're lazy and have to work harder," or even "I don't really care what happens to them"). Challenging our own prejudices at the psychological level then means that we also have to challenge the larger structures of racism in society, as well as the prejudices of other individuals which support those structures. This is why people used to say 20 years ago, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.""

"However, there do seem to have been some changes in the form and manifestation of racism over the past decades. Several observers, such as psychologist David Sears (1997), discuss a new version of racism - symbolic, modern, or subtle racism, it is called - which has grown in the place where the old racism used to be. Sears and others say that the old-fashioned racism of Jim Crow, which used explicit biological theories of White superiority to support legal segregation and discrimination, is indeed gone. But the negative stereotypes and negative emotions toward African American and other ethnic minority groups remain."

First of all, hospitals pass along this info to the papers. I've had three sons and never thought to place an ad in the paper the very next day!

OMG. Also, who is going to place an ad like that, in anticipation that something MIGHT happen someday that this child might become president. And what else kills me is that they somehow think Obama himself is behind it. What -- did he dictate from the womb what he wanted to happen as far as recordings of his birth?

It simply boggles the mind.

I am an Australia and I just wonder why there is such a fuss about Obama's birth certificate. Why is it so hard to resolve this matter?

You would think that if there is any controversy about where Obama was born, he would be the first person to wave his birth certificate around and prove that he was born in the USA and eligible to be President.

I mean, if I was in high office and somebody alleged that I didn't qualify to hold that office because I wasn't born in a particular nation, the first thing I would do would be to drag out my birth certificare, wave it at whoever was questioning my rights and kill the whole issue on the spot and it would never raise its ugly head again.

So why is Obama not doing just that? Why doesn't he kill off this whole issue in one hit by showing his birth certificate?

I am not a Birther, not even an American citizen and I live in Australia, but I just don't understand why Obama is not facing this issue by just producing the piece of evidence that would stop the Birthers in their tracks.

You are even more right than perhaps you realize. To get a clearance to see the classified materials of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee - the Committee on which Senator Obama served BEFORE he even RAN for President - Obama would have had to have had a background check and Top Secret clearance. Any forgery or fraud or irregularities would have shown up four years before the 2008 campaign.

But who cares about facts, right? For these tin foil hat people who have nothing else to do during the day but listen to talk radio and chase Obama conspiracy theories, I am sure the simple explanation for that is that the FBI and CIA are all part of the Affirmative Action conspiracy, too - just like the 1961 Hawaiian newspapers.

Don't worry folks. Perhaps 6 more years will be enough time for you to get used to the idea of having a black Democratic president.

It's fairly obvious that Obama does not have the paperwork that allows him to be the POTUS nor is there any paperwork that might disprove the possibility that he is a creation of the CIA or some other similar agency -I am not going to go into protracted dialogue to argue the issues - I will only point out the obvious - the man does not tell the truth - and why should this issue of his birthplace be that time when he can be believed.

Researchers discover a surprising threat to democracy: our brains

An excerpt:

In the end, truth will out. Won’t it?

Maybe not. Recently, a few political scientists have begun to discover a human tendency deeply discouraging to anyone with faith in the power of information. It’s this: Facts don’t necessarily have the power to change our minds. In fact, quite the opposite. In a series of studies in 2005 and 2006, researchers at the University of Michigan found that when misinformed people, particularly political partisans, were exposed to corrected facts in news stories, they rarely changed their minds. In fact, they often became even more strongly set in their beliefs. Facts, they found, were not curing misinformation. Like an underpowered antibiotic, facts could actually make misinformation even stronger.

The fact that the evolution vs. creationism "debate" is treated with any seriousness at all in our culture, or the fact that many people think "Ghost Hunting" is hard science, just shows the extent to which reason has been abandoned.

>...And McCain, born in the Canal Zone, an American territory, was grandfathered by a law passed many years ago....

PRESIDENT Obama is a US citizen, having been born in HAWAII. Deal with it, quit whining, and grow UP.
=================

Question: What has the media done to investigate where Obama was born, what religion he practices, why his college records are sealed, why his wife, in her own words, said his hometown is Kenya, why a Kenyan MP said Obama was born in Kenya, why, even though his picture appeared on the cover of a national publication from Wright's church three times, that incidentally had anti-American editorials, nothing was done to investigate Obama's claim that for 20 yrs. he neither heard, saw nor read any anti-American rants, why did you not question Obama's healthcare overhaul, even though you were aware that he lied, why didn't you comment on someone who calls himself CIC, visiting Afghanistan only once in the middle of the night, and of all things held a troop review in total darkness. He then hurried home so as not to miss the WH Easter Egg hunt. He has never been to Iraq.

The media allowed someone with a very questionable background to be elected and this person is slowly destroying the country from within. It's time that you did your job, or are you afraid of being called racist?

FACT: the state of Hawaii has repeatedly confirmed that Obama's birth certificate is on file with the state's department of health and verifies that he was born in Hawaii.

FACT: both of the Honolulu's daily newspapers reported Obama's birth in 1961.

FACT: Obama made available to he news media his copy of his Hawaii "Certification of Live Birth" and the several people who handled it indicated that it is clearly authentic.

FACT: the obstetrician who delivered Obama recounted the birth to a friend, over dinner, shortly afterward in 1961.

FACT: the citizenship of the father, under US law in effect in 1961, was not relevant to a person born in the United States.

FACT: Obama's having left the United States to live for a short period in Indonesia as a minor child has no bearing on his US citizenship; millions of Americans have been taken abroad by their parents, including parents who were not themselves US citizens.

FACT: even if Obama had been born outside the US in 1961, there was absolutely no reason for his parents to engage in ANY ruse or fraud for him to gain US citizenship, much less the massive scheme required to fraudulently obtain a Hawaii birth certificate AND have the announcement printed in two newspapers. With his mother a natural-born citizen, it would have been quite a simple process to have him naturalized.

FACT: Obama was a US citizen at birth and remains a US citizen. Unless you cannot read or hear and comprehend the English language, this case is closed.

These people know better. There may be fair amount of simple ignorance in the electorate, but these are public officials who are cynically exploiting this issue to promote public ignorance and confusion. The clear reason is that the Republicans have nothing to offer, and indeed are avoiding making concrete policy proposals for the most part. So this becomes a substitute for the lack of serious positive proposals. These people are a disgrace to the offices they hold, they are a disgrace to principled conservatism, and they are a disgrace to the country.

Watching so many paranoid delusions about Obama take hold in the hearts of fearful right-wingers has helped me understand better how the McCarthy era could have happened. Never in my lifetime have I heard so many people being so loudly and determinedly wrong. Any notion that public political discourse is driven by facts and reason is completely unsustainable in the face of poll results like this. This nation is approaching a crisis point all right, but it isn't Obama's policies stoking the fire--it's his very existence. This country has been owned by white men and run by white men for the benefit of white men since its founding, and a "black" [he isn't, really, of course] President with a funny name symbolizes the loss of white entitlement in a way that a certain segment of the population finds intolerable. Make no mistake--the goal of the Right is to sabotage Obama to the point that the very idea of a minority President becomes unthinkable for another 50 years.

A 'naturalist' is a person who questions Mr.Obama's eligibility to serve as President as he is not a 'natural born citizen'. A 'natural born citizen" simply would be both parents are U.S. citizens at the time of birth and born on U.S. soil. If you are given your citizenship by the government (14th Amendment), you can not be a 'natural born citizen'.

Obama did NOT produce a valid birth certificate as some here claim! What he's produced so far is a "Certificate of Live Birth" which is NOT a birth certificate and is not even accepted in Hawaii for various legal transactions! He has sealed all his personal records so we can't track his origins for accuracy and honesty. He has never produced the passport he used to travel to Pakistan in the 80s when it was on the U.S. no travel list. He has not produced his school records which would show how his education was paid for and by whom.

So as for what Americans believe about him, I'll bet most formed their opinions of him as I did; by his statements and actions not by an obvious biased media!

So based on those points I believe Obama to be an Anti-American, Anti-Constitution, Muslim who couldn't tell the truth if wanted to....He even lied on his law application where it asked if he had ever used another name? He answered "No". An obvious lie!

Many in Africa believe he was born there. Are our embassies encouraging this belief? Even so, one American parent would seem to do the trick, Hawaii, Kenya, the moon or wherever. McCain had no birth certificate (either?), but the Senate acknowledged him as an American qualified for the presidency. Still, if there is one, what's wrong with showing it?

The trouble with Islam is that at sharia you're an apostate if you leave Islam for however seemingly innocent a reason; sharia is not known to be kind to apostates (putting it extremely mildly) and is THE law in Iran, Saudi Arabia and wherever other statute-law authorities aren't looking...which could be anywhere. Say, who are those still unidentified FSO's who keep giddily visaing the terrorists in?

Notice how all or most of the politicians have backtracked, flip-flipped, retracted their statements, and probably feel like idiots for making such ridiculous statements to begin with.

President Obama is American. He is also Christian. His mother is from Kansas. His grandparents are from Kansas. He was born in Hawaii. He is a loyal and dedicated father and husband. He is so thoroughly Christian that he was torn to shreds during the election because of his pastor in Chicago -- a UCC pastor. That's a mainstream Christian denomination, the same as Methodist or Lutheran or Presbyterian. All of the above would not be questioned if Obama were not the son of a black father.

Most of them walk around with it on their shoes as evidenced by the stuff flowing back and forth on the net. It is unfortunate that we have so many gullible people in this country and it is reflected in a Congress that is there seemingly to feather only their own nest and the public be damned.

Take just one issue, Social Security. Both parties spent all the money out of the Social Security trust fund and both blame each other. Much of that money went to give away programs in individual states to insure reelection of individual Senators and Representatives. Both parties laugh at the public as they do what they want and get individuals to fight among themselves about stuff that is mostly balderdash. Only in America!

Obama, McCain and Jindal are not eligible to be President in accordance with Article II, Section I, because they are not Natural Born Citizens.

A Natural Born Citizen is a person born on American soil and both parents are American Citizens.

This was reiterated by John Bingham:

Rep. John Bingham of Ohio, considered the father of the Fourteenth Amendment, confirms that understanding and the construction the framers used in regards to birthright and jurisdiction while speaking on civil rights of citizens in the House on March 9, 1866:

" ... I find no fault with the introductory clause [S 61 Bill], which is simply declaratory of what is written in the Constitution, that every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is, in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen..."

Obama's father was a British subject and thus owed allegiance to a foreign sovereignty.

Jindal's mother was 4 months pregnant with him when his parents arrived in America. They were not naturalized citizens before Jindal was born, therefore, they owed allegiance to a foreign sovereinty at the time of his birth.

McCain, it was learned later, was born in a Panamanian Hospital not a US Naval Base as was first reported, so he was not born on American soil but is a US citizen because both his parents were US citizens.

There is much written on Natural Born Citizen but it has been ignored by those with a political agenda and those who support them.

President Obama did produce his birth certificate to those that need to see it to prove he is a citizen. If he was to publish it where the whole world could see it as some of you would like, how many crooks do you think would have his social security number? Hawaii can't release his to you for the same reason that your state won't release yours if I was to request it. State's freely giving out birth certificates as part of freedom of information act requests would spurn all kinds of identity theft.

Get over the issue, it is final already. Now whether growing up elsewhere influenced him is another story, but it doesn't stop him from qualifying to run.

And no I am not a democrat. I am simply tired of people beating a dead horse. As far as being Muslim, if he is, religion can't prevent him from running, just influence how you vote. Also the same people that are calling him a muslim are the same ones who were complaining about him associating with Rev. Wright. If he associates with a christian pastor he is a racist, if he doesn't he is muslim.

Regardless of his religion, we have him until the next election. Anybody that wants to get rid of him sooner, remember that Biden would replace him.

And for the pro Palin crowd, she is just like Biden, open mouth insert foot. I can't understand how anyone supports either one of them. Either Biden or Palin as President would destroy this country more.

1. The Republicans are secretly happy with Obama because he is making all those hard choices A Democrat always has to make to dig us out from under all the Crap that, this time,GWBush, Ex President made.
2. Obama, if he really has one, could produce at any time an legitimate Hawaiian Birth Certificate. Due to the fact that he has not produced one it must be assumed that he was born in Kenya, as the Birth Certificate going around says. The Hawaiian
form also going around in only a "register" of a Foreign "live" birth by an American Citizen. This is not a birth Certificate as it does not certify "where" the "live" one was born (Take a closer look). He should be Impeached according to the Constitution because he has created a misdemeanor by not telling the American Voter that he was not born in the USA. I am sure that once the Impeachment proceedures go forward he will be more than glad to produce a ligitimate Hawaiian
Birth Certificate, if one exists. If he can't produce one, Impeachment and Jail time. Mr. Biden, you are President!!!

Deut. 5:20 "neither shall you bear false witness" You would think they would be relieved that the copies of the 10 commandments are being removed from public places. And don't give me the technical definition of Biblical false witness, that's a cop-out.

I am afraid that I will never understand americans. If it is a requirement that an individual be US born in order to be president, then how can there even be a question of a person even running for president not being willing to show proof of being qualified to run and to hold office.

I also cannot understand a president not being very transparent about things which are not private (birth certificates are anything but).

Why would a president who has nothing to hide be unwilling to produce his birth certificate? This action, in and of itself, is circumstantial proof of guilt (not being US born) until proven otherwise.

If americans are willing to accept this situation, I have a planet for sale that you might be interested in buying.

Obama said with his own mouth that he was MUSLIM. He said this to the Egyptian Prime Minister. Fox News, Drudge Report, Newsmax and several other site ran the story. Obama is the one who can't keep his stories straigt.

Obama is not a citizen. If he were a citizen why would he spend millions fighting to keep all his records sealed including he certificed birth certificate. No one and I mean no one has ever seen a copy of a certified certificate. Do your homework!

He did travel to Indonesia in the 80's on a passport when US citizens were not allowed to travel there. What country issued Obama a passport for travel to Indonesia. Obama also uses a dead man social security number and that was entered into court record.

He is a fraud in my opinion because of the facts. I did my homework and didn't buy into any party's rhetoric. Study the fact and put party affiliation aside.

i agree with those who are wondering why WsPo and other main stream media sources are covering the same Obama stories on the same day!

Yesterday I saw articles and coverage on Obama being a muslim. Today its talk about his birth. To both the WH has always been coy. Setting aside the question of privacy with respect to religion, have we all forgotten Jeremiah Wright?

As for the birth certificate issue, there has been smoke around the issue because the WH/Team Obama gets right up to the edge of denial, but leaves some doubt.

Considering how the media/communications arm of this Admin. functions one is left to wonder if there is an issue here or just poor media relations. But not to worry, WaPo and other mostly liberal sources will help out.

Obama's documentation is unclear partly because Hawaii's statute produces documents for babies that are simply presented, without proving birth origin.

[§338-17.8] Certificates for children born out of State.
(a) Upon application of an adult or the legal parents of a minor child, the director of health shall issue a birth certificate for such adult or minor, provided that proof has been submitted to the director of health that the legal parents of such individual while living without the Territory or State of Hawaii had declared the Territory or State of Hawaii as their legal residence for at least one year immediately preceding the birth or adoption of such child.
(b) Proof of legal residency shall be submitted to the director of health in any manner that the director shall deem appropriate. The director of health may also adopt any rules pursuant to chapter 91 that he or she may deem necessary or proper to prevent fraudulent applications for birth certificates and to require any further information or proof of events necessary for completion of a birth certificate.
(c) The fee for each application for registration shall be established by rule adopted pursuant to chapter 91. [L 1982, c 182, §1]”

@chert

People didnt ask for previous birth certificates from previous presidents because there was no question in the legitimacy of their American citizenship. (i.e. GW Bush, GHW Bush parents were born in the United States and none of their parents were from say, South Africa or Germany) Obama's father was admitedly from Kenya and on top of that Obama spent a considerable amount of his childhood outside the US. On top of that, Obama has never been cooperative with publically releasing his Birth Certificate. This only compounds conspiracy theorists.

The vast majority of these people are right in demanding to see his birth certificate... there needs to be transparency in Government, that transparency starts with the electoral process. EVERY candadite's birth certificate should be a matter of public record. (If they wanted that to remain private, then they should have stayed out of the public spotlight) Honestly, Obama has only made the situation worse by not being forthcoming about his birth certificate.

Quite frankly, I think he does it just to keep the right frothing at the mouth... It's just like the school yard bully, keep poking and prodding everyone else to get them riled up and then stand back and watch them get bent out of shape. It's kinda sick and twisted.

Logically speaking, its ridiculous to think that the man was not born in the United States... However, if he was born in the US then what's the big deal with publically releasing his birth certificate just to set the matter to rest? Simply speaking, he's using it to paint a picture of the right. Brilliant strategy or sick joke? You decide.

Interesting that they leave out who originated the birther idea. The Hillary Clinton team during the primaries.

Posted by: MarkE3 | August 20, 2010 5:51 PM | Report abuse

The reality here is that in 557 days the Democratic Primary will be held in Arizona and the law requires proof of citizenship. Mr. Obama will produce his long-form birth certificate and that will be the end of it or he won't and it will be the end of him.

In 557 days one group will be right and one group will be wrong.

Me? I'm counting the days. I thought the birthers were a bunch of kooks, but Mr. Obama has a Connecticut SSN and he never lived or worked there. He could have had a junior staffer release his records, but he had them sealed.

In 557 days he can prove the birthers wrong and use it as a political weapon to help his re-election efforts. If he can't, every single law he signed is going to be challenged and the Democratic Party will not be able to win an election for a while and the people in the media will be further crippled.

Sounds like a mission for JournOlist to me. You better get cracking. I see it like this; if he could of, he would of. Letting it go on and on only makes reasonable people more doubtful of a man who has proven to have no real working relationship with the truth. I think they could be right and Mr. Obama is facing a real problem. Having said, if he isn't impeached this spring for Jobsgate or the other constitutional abuses I will be surprised, so he may dodge this bullet - the hard way.

Will this issue never go away? It's so disillusioning to me that people just cling to this false idea. They won't accept anything as proof. Their minds are made up. No one ever raised this issue until we elected an African-American president. I think that's the entire issue right there: those who cannot accept the fact that Obama is President. How many times does the State of Hawaii have to answer the same question -- here's the birth certificate.

For "regular" people to deliberately distort this issue is bad enough; for elected officials to continue to raise it ("Well, I'm just sayin' . . .") is despicable. We have so many other issues they should turn their limited intelligence to!

There is no need for special explanation of why Americans believe Obama is a Moslem. His father was a a Muslim foreign student from Kenya, his stepfather was Muslim, he grew up in Indonesia, a Muslim country, and went there to a Muslim school. Why wouldn’t he be a Muslim? There is also no need for special explanation of why Americans believe he was not born in Hawaii. Why doesn’t he ask Hawaii to open its birth records?

I've had to show my birth cert on a number of occasions including when I moved to Florida to get my drivers license (which I must produce to vote each time). No one would have had second thoughts on the "birther" issue except for the fact that Pres Obama refuses to show his, Hawaii, after his visit, refuses to show it, and the president has spent a lot of money in the courts to avoid showing it. There is also a lot of other information missing (school records, multiple soc security numbers etc.) and too many incidents to be a mere coincidence. If he were a republican, the news media would be all over this. There is also an official looking copy of a Kenyan birth cert for Obama floating around lately as well. So don't blame the media or some politicians. This is the presidents game. I think that every state should require proof of meeting the requirements before a candidate's name can appear on that states ballot.

Unfortunately, there are a number of dishonest, office-seeking politicians and others who know better, but are willing to pander to the ignorance, paranoia, and bigotry of those who WANT desperately to believe that the nation's first black president can't possibly be a "real" American. Why don't some of them produce their birth certificates? This is a false, "made-up" issue. I'm sure that most, if not all, of these people consider themselves "Christians," even as they maliciously violate the ninth Commandment---"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." 2. In the absence of means, motive, or similar proof of fraud, Obama was born in America in August, 1961,the widely circulated foot print document not withstanding. To go beyond this, shows that many of us are still in the Middle Ages.
3. Obama's religious convictions do seem rather vague. But evidence clearly shows that he attends Christian Churches. The fact of the question of his being Muslim in the beyond the point.
4. What the president needs to face is the fact that 40% polled do not believe that he is a natural born citizen and the 20% believe he is a Muslim does show a significant level of distrust of this president. The lies of Health Care is an important reason for this.

I knew then that Billy Graham was no man of God and not a person I could respect as a Christian. It is obvious that his son Franklin is no better. Pretending that he thinks a person can be "born" a Muslim or a Jew by virtue of who their parents are is as biased as thinking that people are born Christian. In other words our salvation is determined by who our parents are. Hardly a rational theology. Franklin Graham should be ashamed of himself for his cowardice and inability to transcend such foolish beliefs. I can have no respect for him either. What a bigoted wimp!!

in this country, one must declare they are running for President and register as such that they are. It's at least, I believe, 1 year in advance of the actual election.

In that registering to run, the documents have to be provided.
Obviously he obliged them legally, because he would never have been allowed to run, after registering and declaring his run for the Presidency.

He would not have been allowed to run.

Another laugher about Obama. Of course he is a muslim, if not in fact certainly in deed. It is curious that, according to the liberal media and pundits, we should not ask about a President's citizenship, i.e. birth certificate, or religion. Why not? If he is not a natural-born citizen, then he should be thrown out. If he practices an anti-American culture/religion, then he should be thrown out. The fact that he will not prove birth or deny islamic faith, opens the question as to the truth.

Hey Democrats,

The right of any person to proselytize, or the right of any person to convert to a religion of his choice, is a basic tenet of Western liberal societies. The unique context of some Muslim conversion efforts should not be ignored, though: They do not envision two civilizations living in harmony, but one, Islam, gaining world domination. There is some irony in the fact that the most vocal and popular proponents of efforts directed at the Islamization of the West and de-legitimization of values it holds dear either operate from within the boundaries of, or are inspired by, Arab regimes which officially preach for multi-faith dialogue and are dependent on American support for their survival.

What you see online is not a real birth certificate. A real birth certificate has a footprint on it -- I don't see one, do you?

That document you get from the hospital with the cute little footprints is NOT a birth certificate. It is a memento the hospital gives you as a souvenire of the birth.

OK DUMMIES, the State of Hawaii does NOT keep PAPER birth certificates. They are stored electronically in a database. The old paper copies were entered and subsequently destroyed. Just like in Oklahoma, if you want your birth certificate, it is printed from a database query on "special" paper. Don't assume all states are stuck in the 19th century.

Pretty worthless. The State of Hawaii prints out a birth certificate and certifies it. They don't use the original birth certificate from 1961 to make certified copies.

It's hardly a secret that's how states come up with them.

Footprints? What footprints? We don't need no bloody footprints.

I've got a certified copy of my BC from 1949 (Boston) right here that I received by hand from the registry in South Boston that I have used to verify citizenship and employment. It doesn't have a footprint.

(Although I just stepped on a shard of broken glass and any footprint you took would indeed be bloody. ;-))

The image displayed online is alledged to be a certificat of live birth not 'a birth certificate'.
Certificates of live birth are provided by a issuing authority to confirm that a person was presented and by family members, attesting that the person is/was a live birth.
These are often provided in lieu of a birth certificate but are not acceptable without other documentation by passpot authorities or insuraance companies.
The lack of investigative interest by the major media and tha secretive behaviour of the Obama forces have been the cause of the growth of the allegations.
Dig for the facts.I don't know and until a real hard nosed investigation takes place and professional un -biased reporting as to the statements and writings of Mr.Obama himself these troubling allegation will persist.
Obama and promoters have spent far to much effort, money and time to resist further facts to be disclosed.

Thank you Mr. President for saving tens of thousands of jobs at GM. Now, as GM pays back the feds, at a profit, many thousands owe Obama for the temporary help the feds gave. Same thing with the banks. Of course, Obama structured the loans the feds gave so these loans could be paid back quickly and minimize government involvement. And, that is how it has been working. Now, health care. No, we didn't get a gov option. And, we still have the most expensive health system in the developed world (nearly double Europe's cost), with poor results (Europeans have longer life expectancies then us), but Obama is making a start on repairing American health care, a national disgrace. Finally, Obama and terrorism. With doubling US troops in Afghanistan and Predator drone attacks in Yemen and Somalia, Obama has killed many more Taliban and Al Qaeda then Bush ever did. Except for the economy still not perking up, this is a successful President.

Some feel he has set race relations back 50 years. Some feel he has destroyed the world's best health care system. This is neither unusual or extraordinary. I have never seen my original birth certificate, it was lost right after I was born. But I have a couple of different "legal" copies acquired at different times from the State Agency. They all look different. This is how Hawaii does it. Deal with it.

As far as a Republican governor signing off that ObaMao's birth certificate is genuine -- there are many RINOs out there and they were working for decades with the Libs to get us closer to Socialism.

Where is Obama's real birth certificate? Why doesn't Obama release his school records? Why doesn't Obama allow us to see anything?
===========================
Once again, for those who have been on another planet for the past 2 years: The "real" birth certificate has been viewed and certified as genuine -- twice -- by the Hawaii secretary of state, and this is further supported by the Republican governor (a Republican). The state of Hawaii does not publish birth records, and it's not going to start now based on such laughable conspiracy nonsense.

As to his school records, what do you care? He went to Harvard and the University of Chicago. The school records issue is just like the birth certificate - a canard meant not to reveal anything but to delegitimize the presidency.

In any case, you and I both know that you would claim any legitimate document is a forgery. People such as yourself are never convinced by contrary evidence.

Easy fix - show a genuine, certified birth certificate and the case is closed. The birth certificate posted online is not official - there is no official seal or signature.

My comment: The issuance of birth records is a matter for each individual state. The document issued by the State of Hawaii is the ONLY document that the State of Hawaii will issue to document birth. That the original certificate may be missing (not a shock, many of us don't have our original birth certificate) is irrelevant. The document issued by the State of Hawaii is the official state document. (And Hawaii, as you know, has a Republican Governor that supported McCain. Don't you think if ANY doubt could have been placed on the President's birth, it would have been placed). Scream and shout all you want. This is a fully and completely settled issue. Even a law requiring a "specific" birth certificate form would not have any impact. The Hawaii document would be presented, and under the Constitution, it would necessarily be accepted.

Actually, no, this is the opposite of true. An actual, legal birth certificate is a certified record that is obtained from the state. The "footprint" birth certificates are not considered by most states to be a legal document. Since my family has been born in 5 different states, and I've had to produce valid birth certificates to obtain passports, this is true in at least Arizona, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois and Wisconsin. I have valid birth certificates from all of these states for members of my family, and none of them have a footprint on them.

But, thanks for demonstrating your lack of knowledge regarding this matter. I always figured that's what you people were claiming, and now I know.

It's Palin's big secret. What woman has a baby and nobody knew "she" was pregnant? A woman who's not a woman.

Have you ever seen a birth certificate for Trig, Track, Bristol, listing their biological mother? NO. It's because "Sarah" Palin's name is not on it, that's why. Palin has consistently refused to take a physical examination, including GENETIC TESTING, to prove that "she" is a female.

Also, there are questions about how he paid for his Harvard Law School education since, despite a claim by Michele Obama, no one has produced any evidence that he received student loans. The Obamas will not release any student loan details despite repeated requests from the Chicago Tribune. However, it appears that his Harvard education may have been paid for by a foreign source. Khalid Al-Mansour, an advisor to Saudi prince Al-Walid bin Talah, told Manhattan Borough president, Percy Sutton, that he was raising money for Obama’s Harvard tuition. Incidentally, Prince Tala is the largest donor to CAIR, a Muslim group declared by the U.S. Government in 2007 as an unindicted co-conspirator in a terrorist financing trial. At least three of CAIR’s leaders have been indicted for terrorist activities. Al-Mansour’s admission opens up speculation as to whether Muslim interests have assisted Obama’s career in the hope he would eventually be in a position someday to promote their interests.

Where's the proof that Obama is a Christian? WHERE? Because he says so?!Because he sat in a black liberation church for 20 years, when Obama himself claims he never heard a word of what Rev. Wright said. Look up black liberation theology and you'll see it isn't Christianity. Obama went to that church to further his political career and when he got to where he wanted to go, he stopped going to church altogether. His present spiritual adviser is a radical communist, Obama himself slipped up and said that he is a Muslim but then was corrected by the Liberal news reporter. Obama has not done one thing for Christianity. NOT ONE! But he constantly comes to the aid of Muslims -- supporting the mosque at ground zero, having NASA try and help Muslims feel better about themselves, bowing to a Saudi King and kissing his hand, saying that morning prayers are the most beautiful sound he's heard, etc. Obama has no respect for 9-11 either. Remember the Air Force One and the jet that flew low over Manhattan without a care for the terror it put NYers through, or how about last year where he tried to start another holiday (I even forget what the darn thing was) on 9-11 rememberance day. Only a cold hearted Muslim who hates Americans would do something so horrible.

Obama’s application to Punahou School – now mysteriously missing – would likely contain a birth certificate. And, according to attorney Gary Kreep, “his Occidental College records are important as they may show he attended there as a foreign exchange student.” Indeed, Obama used his Indonesian name “Barry Soetoro” while attending Occidental. Kreep has filed lawsuits challenging Obama’s eligibility to be president and as part of his lawsuit he requested Obama’s records from Occidental. However, Obama’s lawyers quickly moved to stop Occidental from honoring this request.
Furthermore, now that at least three document authentication experts have declared the scanned “Certificate of Live Birth” Obama’s campaign team gave to a pro-Obama website to be an obvious phony; we know that he is hiding something here as well.

Notwithstanding what the birthers say, I really do believe that John McCain would have been eligible to be President, had he won the election.

His mother is a citizen, and so he derives his non-naturalized status through her, despite his foreign birth and his father's apparent failure to formally acknowledge paternity as required.

The birthers should really stop harping on this.

I love how the media tries to pawn off it's own ineptitude and laziness on politicians. Last I remember, any idiot can be a Congressman/woman. I thought it was the media's job to FACT CHECK those idiots and tell them when they are FACTUALLY wrong. But I guess I was wrong, that is no longer the media's purpose. Today, their purpose is simply to pass along whatever it is each political party says. So if Officeholder A says the sky is falling, then the media simply passes that as news on their national programs. If Officeholder B says, no, the sky isn't falling, we're all actually just growing, then that's what the media will pass along. I can't wait until journalism as we know it FINALLY DIES!!! These yahoos are good for nothing. We'd all do much better just getting our news from our respective, biased websites we go to which cater to our ideology or point-of-view. DIE OLD MEDIA, you no longer serve any purpose whatsoever!!

In a society where a free press is legally mandated, the media has an absolute responsibility to expose lies and provide the facts. You're wrong...there are no/no background checks on candidates. Background checks such as they are are done by the press and the opposition candidate and voted on by the voters. Running for office is not the same as receiving a security clearance. Many of Clinton's White House staffers actually were ineligible for security clearances. No federal government law-enforcement office vets candidates. And McCain, born in the Canal Zone, an American territory, was grandfathered by a law passed many years ago.

Orly Taitz, an attorney who has filed numerous suits against Obama regarding his eligibility to serve as president, appears to be the first to discover this. In her suit, representing a number of military officers who are refusing to serve under an ineligible commander in chief, she hired private investigator Neil Sankey to conduct research on Obama’s prior addresses and Social Society numbers. Using Intelius, Lexis Nexis, Choice Point and other public records, Sankey found around 25 Social Security numbers connected with Obama’s name.

I had to show countles documents to get my current job which requires a security clearance. Every political wantabe needs to show (and especially the President) the equivalent of what anyone needing a security clearance needs. And certainly the president needs a security clearance. Not only that anyone who wants to hold office and has served in the military needs to open their military record, minus their efficiency reports, to the public (Kerry would never vote for this) since you cannot hold public office with any discharge less than honorable. Why should people to whom We the People are giving so much power over our lives be exempt from such "proof of purchase"? So let's review, if you want to hold office you need: A birth certificate (if required and say the president is); an open military record; a ciminal background check; and a drug test. My job required all of these and it doesn't have near the responsibility say the president, vice president or speaker of the house has....

NOT THIS AGAIN !!

Hawaii already issued the birth certificate to the authorities that matter. His birth in Hawaii is on record. Why doesn't anyone believe the State of Hawaii?

Go after the state of Hawaii to prove it is NOT the real thing.

All states that have a potential candidate for the Presidential race;
that was born in their state--
should be the ones accountable to bring forth the birth certificate.

Let his/her birth state prove it.

Then one can argue with the State it came from.

////
You know, with all the hub dub about the AZ immigration law and "anchor babies"....maybe that is what the President really is....instead of denouncing him completely as a non-citizen

Anchor babies. It's the new dilemma.
But that doesn't deny the fact of the birth was/in the USA.
