Meg Whitman: My ex-maid should be deported

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman of California says that, though it breaks her heart, her former housekeeper should be deported.

The former eBay chief executive has called for tougher sanctions against employers who hire illegal workers, but she's been accused of knowingly employing an undocumented immigrant for nine years.

"Well, the answer is it breaks my heart, but she should be deported because she forged documents and she lied about her immigration status," Whitman said in an interview with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News. "And it breaks my heart ... On Nov. 3, no one's going to care about Nicky Diaz. But the law is the law and we live in the rule of law. It's important."

In September, Nicky Diaz Santillan said she had worked for Whitman illegally for nine years, and that her employer knew her immigration status. Whitman countered that Santillan had misled her with false documents, and that she fired the maid when she found out the truth.

"As soon as we found that she was an illegal immigrant, we did what we had to do as an employer, which was to let her go," Whitman said. "But all of the documentation that we had said that she was legal."

Whitman said at the time that she kept the story to herself to protect Santillan: "Because Nicky had worked for us for 10 years, I was very fond of Nicky and I didn't want to make an example of her. It's not an obligation of the employer to turn in illegal employees."

How can she run for Governor without putting her house in order? She blamed Jerry Brown for putting her maid's status in the open and in jeopardy & now changes her tune & says her maid should be deported. Tea Partiers/REPUBLICANS like Meg Whitman will say anything to get elected!

Good enough to falsify documents. For God's sake, this woman Diaz is a CRIMINAL. Why can't anybody SEE THIS. She is being USED by the Democrats. Wait and see, she will be granted citizenship as soon as this charade is over.

Meg Whitman did what she had to do. Remember, nine years ago Meg Whitman was still CEO of EBay which took her time and attention. She went through an agency, was assured the maid was here legally and had no reason not to believe it. You democrats are jealous of her success, her talent, her money. She obviously has the intelligence and the contacts after being an executive in several companies prior to EBay, to bring companies and jobs to California.

Put aside your jealousies and bring Whitman to Sacramento. California needs her, not a 72 year old has been.

No wonder Americans are so despised. If being rich turns you into a lying hypocrite like you, Miss Whitman, who turns against the most vulnerable, then keep all your money. And maybe, just maybe, what goes around will come around. How dare you use your money and your power to turn on someone who dedicated nine years of service to your family. And I bet you paid her in cash. Yes, enforce the law by all means, but it has to be applied to the likes of you to start with. But of course we know that will never happen. This really is a sad state of affairs for a country that prides itself on its strong Christian values.

Meg Whitman is no feminist and does not care for human rights. That should be clear. Her business experience was stealing from a major corporation to line her own pockets and cheating the staff members.
She also cheated her maid. Hang Meg Whitman ambitions on Tuesday. She did not learn enough in kindergarten to have the maturity to hold public office.

I find it convenient for Ms. Whitman to say that for nine plus years, she never had an idea that the nanny/housekeeper was undocumented. Surely, she must of had ignored that fact, and simply turned her cheek to that. I feel for the children that Ms. Diaz helped raise. Certainly, there developed a loving bond between Ms. Diaz and the children, possibly as mother and child.

Nobody's mentioned that The Obama Administration killed the "No Match" letter program...

Nobody's mentioned that DHS Has been dropping thousands of deportation proceedings because they claim they lack the funds.

Of course nobody's mentioned that DHS has NOT requested additional funds for enforcement and that when offered additional funds, they refused them.

Obama and Napolitano have no intention of enforcing the law written to protect AMERICANS!

As a general rule, if you can shave at least a half point off your current interest rate, it is a good idea to refinance. If you currently have a home mortgage above 7%, the time is now to make a change. Look online for "123 Mortgage Refinance" they gave me the lowest rate than everybody else which is 3.21%.

I cannot understand why there is so much bashing of an outstanding citizen and captain of industry like Meg Whitman. All she wants to do is enforce the law.

So let her go ahead and enforce it. The best way to do that is for her to go to jail for knowingly hiring an illegal alien. What, Whitman didn't know for nine years that her maid was illegal? A great story. Whitman should tell it to the judge.

The Post really needs to fix their comments system.

Some people can be hammered with the truth and still not get it, but this is ridiculous.

And Whitman is a proven liar. Three times bald-faced lies come out of her many-sided mouth, but some folks still can't admit it to themselves that they got fooled by a liar.

Whitman is a sleazy liar.

She didn't know anything about anything, 'til she heard about THE LETTER!

Then she said Nicky must have intercepted it because neither she (Meg) nor her husband had any knowledge of it.

Until the letter was produced with Meg's husband's handwritten note on it.

Then, Meg, uh, well...er, she, uh...couldn't think of a plausible THIRD LIE so she, uh, well, tried to move on before someone asked about payroll taxes.

"Thirty years ago you could do anything in California."

Indeed.

Maybe Nicky could apply for the job of Rush Limbaugh's housekeeper. He probably falls off the wagon once or twice a year, between divorces and trips to the Dominican Republic.

Corporations OWN America, and its governments, at all levels, national, state, and local. The less government we have, the less limits there are, and can be, on the power of the corporations.

The State of California along with most of the cities and counties have been told their police to look the other way if they discover any illegals.
Ask Jerry Brown why Meg's former maid was not deported? He knew she was an illegal. Instead, she was used for the election and is still in the country. For all we know, she may be renting from one of Brown's rental units?
It is not up to the INS to train employers on what to look for if a potential employee applies for work. Most of these agents have no idea is a persons papers are real or not. It is up to the US Government.
See publication 15 from the IRS. Employers' tax guide. Under: Verification of social security numbers. This is what is not pushed onto the employers to use as verification. The reason, social security admin budget could not handle this. It is purely a voluntary thing for the employers to do. If you check to see what is involved, you will understand why it is not done.

There was a time you could not ask a person if they were legal, you had to accept their word and any documents if they presented. The employer and/or local police do not have access to the immigration files.
This is NOT just a Mexican,Central American,So.American problem. We have people from all over the world who overstay visas, students and others, who never return to their homeland.
They know for $100. They can get a complete set if ID papers. Until INS works with local governments this will continue to be a factor, even to the WELFARE/AID. Go into any social security office or welfare office and you will find the majority are non English speaking!!!

That the cost of $2.6 Trillion dollars, to make it comfortable and will come out of taxpayers pockets; added to the 13 Trillion debt we already have. The far left has already voted for the illegal invasion and to extend our Social Security to them, even the ones who never paid into the system.

Meg Whitman, privileged, heartless, white woman throws away her "member of the family" for political expediency. Whitman demonstrates she did care a "whit" for Diaz for the 9 years before this upcoming Nov. 2.

The problem for Whitman are the tens of thousands of Nicki Diazes who found a path to citizenship and will vote against Whitman.

First shoving an employee at eBay. Then spending $160 Million Dollars to boost her ego. Now sacrificing her housekeeper for the anti-immigrant xenophobe vote.

Heckuva campaign, Meggie!

What a stupid statement for someone who seeks public office with a duty to be sure laws are carried out properly. The law provides that a person has a right to a hearing before an immigration judge before she is deported. At that time, there are several avenues of relief that could be available to her. Hopefully Gloria Allred will consult an immigration lawyer on her client's behalf.

Meg Whitman really is a gigantic puke! Whether deportation is right or wrong, you don't crap on people who are essentially helpless; the law is there to determine what happens next. And this from a woman who seeks to be Governor by buying your vote.

The terrible things one hears about her leadership at Ebay are undoubtedly understated.

This story screams of blatant hypocrisy, callous exploitation and shameful sacrifice of any semblance of loyalty and gratitude on the altar of political ambition.

Whitman was happy to use Diaz' personal services for 9 years (please don't tell me that multi-millionaire corporate CEO Whitman lacked the resources to verify the claims of a servant working in her own home). Came time for Whitman to make her bid (literally) for the Governor's office, and Whitman is shocked, SHOCKED to learn that Diaz' papers aren't in order. The maid gets the unceremonious boot.... nine years of faithful service mean nothing... and suddenly... NOW, anyway... "the law is the law".

Meg Whitman is a hypocrite or not fit for the challenges of the governors office. She has the intellect and without question, the resources to insure that her employees are legally able to work for her. She turned her head because it was convenient and now she's going to make an example out of this woman? I don't feel sorry for anyone who is discovered for being here illegally but this seems a bit Samson and Goliath like to me. Shame on Whitman. I do hope she loses if only to prove to the American public that money still doesn't buy votes.

Ummm... Where did you get the idea that illegal aliens are in the military? Sure, legal residents can join the military, they even get a faster path to citizenship, but it is against the law for the military to induct illegal aliens, just like it is in the civilian world. I'm sure it has been attempted, but getting past the FBI background check is kind of difficult.

Requirements of a business when hiring is to have a person fill out an I-9 form. Then check certain pieces of ID - normally a drivers license and social security card. Most employers are not taught what to look for if the id's are fake. Nor is it required to contact the social security admin for verification.
Meg Whitman went through an agency that is suppose to determine if the person is legitimate or not. They fall into the same situation as I described above.
When a person is using a fake social security number for work, this number is reported to the social security admin. They do not inform the IRS or states that there is a duplication. All they do is ask the employer to check the information to make sure it is correct. The social security admin keeps the income earned separate if the name & number are used more than once.

Posted by: alscoins | October 29, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Of course she should be deported but we're NEVER going to solve this problem by concentrating our efforts on the illegal immigrants themselves. The real root of the problem is the people who hire and exploit illegal labor and it is the employers upon whom we should focus.

It is a matter of motivation and detterance. The illegal aliens themselves are, by and large, looking for work and motivated by a certain degree of desperation. Their employers, by contrast, are motivated ONLY by profit.

It is much easier to dissuade a crime of greed than a crime of desperation. Desperate people have little to lose and are therefore relatively difficult to deter but to deter a crime of greed requires ONLY that the criminal be convinced that he or she will not profit by their crime.

First, as this case makes clear as if it needed to be made clearer, we need to implement some sort of program make the identification of registered workers easy and reliable so that employers will no longer be able to claim ignorance as a defense. There are ALREADY good programs for doing this that we simply need to implement.

Next, we should offer illegal workers who turns in their employer a reward substaintial enough to ensure that a signifigant number of them will do so. This will ensure that the employers WILL be caught or that there is at least a severe risk of being turned in.

People convicted of employing illegal aliens should then be punished in as draconian a fashion necessary to make it VERY clear that one will not profit by hiring illegal labor, perhaps a serious jail sentence and a MASSIVE fine out of which the informant's reward could be paid.

By doing something like this, we can turn illegal workers against their traitorous employers, eliminate the profit potential of hiring illegal workers and destroy the underground labor market pretty much over-night. Without jobs to draw them, the current flood of humanity should dwindle to a trickle.

This plan could be implemented in tandem with other enforcement methods. Indeed, if the plan works, something would still have to be done about the people already here (and the problem may actually get WORSE in the short term when the jobs disappear), but at least we won't be bailing out a leaking ship any longer.

There is no reason that such a plan could not be implemented tomorrow except for the total lack of will on the part of our so-called "leaders", of either party, to do ANYTHING serious about this very serious issue. They'd rather stage themselves a comdey routine on the public dime.

When Warren Buffett came into help Arnold Warren immediately pointed out that California's main problem was Proposition 13 - which held property taxes on property brought before 1980 to 1979 levels.
Prop 13 needed to be means tested - if you're fablously rich or a wealthy corporation you shouldn't get the same benefits as someone living off of social security.

Sounded simple - but then big business complained - seemed they were the number one benefactors of Prop 13 not the poor elderly.

And big business scared the poor elderly and Arnold wasn't willing to risk losing.

So reform was dropped and Arnold became a joke - and by the way I am a native Californian.

My big hope for this election is that Brown, Boxer and the Dem-sponsored ballot initiatives win.

No more restraints on the Calif. budget process, just pass any idiotic budget with a simple majority, which Dems have.

The teachers union is pushing that one..need we say more?

By 2012 the state will enter complete, irreparable melt down thanks to the public employees unions.

Brown will rubber stamp it all, and raise taxes on the "wealthy" to drive even more business out of the state.

A workers paradise at last, social justice for all.

And a complete train wreck.

Just in time for the 2012 primaries.

Republicans will point to Catastro-fornia as the future of Democrat America.

That's the choice in 2012.

Based on how the Dems will do on Tuesday, I don't think the voters are going to jump at the idea.

"It's not an obligation of the employer to turn in illegal eimployees." How convenient- "I wasn't required to check that this guy I picked up at the Home Depot was here illegally and I had no idea." Yeah right.

Replying to "KLGrube: The point is that this entire situation only reflects well on Whitman in that she kept the story to herself and didn't report Nicky to the authorities. It was Allred who did that. She should be ashamed of herself."

KL, do you truly think ANY aspect of the story reflects well on Whitman? If so, you are in a very small minority, trust me! Far from burnishing her credentials for public office, she has only succeeded in reminding Californians that she lacks judgment, compassion and integrity. Money is her sole qualification for leadership.

...a little late for that now.

Well now, ain't you just the sweetheart. For years the girl works for you and all is fine but she happens to tell the world she is illegal so you want her now deported? She is good enough to be in your home, scrub your toilets but now not good enough to even be in the country?

Unfortunately, Gloria Allred put this young woman in the spotlight and there is no turning back now. She provided false and forged papers when she applied to work here in the U.S. and, according to immigration laws, must be deported. Perhaps she has some other family or someone else here who can fight for her. Maybe Gloria can work on getting her here legally. The point is that this entire situation only reflects well on Whitman in that she kept the story to herself and didn't report Nicky to the authorities. It was Allred who did that. She should be ashamed of herself.
