Obama avoiding Indian temple over Muslim rumors

The New York Times is reporting that on his upcoming visit to India, President Obama will not stop at the famous Golden Temple to avoid stoking rumors about his faith.

But the United States has ruled out a Golden Temple visit, according to an American official involved in planning. Temple officials said that American advance teams had gone to Amritsar, the holy city that is the site of the temple, to discuss a possible visit. But the plan appears to have foundered on the thorny question of how Mr. Obama would cover his head, as Sikh tradition requires, while visiting the temple.

Sikhs wear turbans on their heads. They're not Muslim, they are often confused for Muslims in the U.S. and have been victims of hate crimes directed at Muslims.

An August Washington Post poll found that one in five Americans think Obama is Muslim.

Too bad it won't let me vote: "No, President Obama should not visit the temple since surely, as the president of the U.S., he has bigger responsibilities and better things to do with his time (and our money) than to go sight-seeing."

Why is the Post making an issue of a landmark Obama did not go to see? I'm sure there are plenty of historic sites that he's never been to. Shouldn't you all report the things that have actually happened, and not the things that won't and don't need to?

Why are people like you such idiots?
1. Being a Muslim is no worse or better than being a Christian.
2. Being a Muslim doesn’t automatically make you a bad person. In fact, the majority of the 1.6 billion Muslims in the world are peace loving, gentle and hospitable.
3. Obama DOESN’T try to hide everything about himself. In fact, if you read (if you are able to read), his three books:
Change we can believe in; The Audacity of Hope: thoughts on reclaiming the American Dream; Dreams from my Father: a story of race and inheritance, you would learn a lot more about the real Obama than your god, Glenn Beck could ever tell you. (Glenn Beck on the other hand, is infamous for the lies he tells about his mother’s death). Obama is really not that mysterious at all. Why don't you do some fact checking before spouting off about things you know nothing about. Ignorant people should either learn or shut up.

How sad and what a shame.

Because of some stupid, idiotic, racist, xenophobic, culturally defunct Republicans, Obama cannot see what is one of the most truly beautiful temples in the world. Hateful men like Beck would love Obama to go and visit anything that is remotely foreign, so that he could open up his vitriolic, poisonous floodgates of hatred and damnation.

The thing is, if the paper had never mentioned it, the majority of the ignorant Tea Party mob have probably never even heard of the Amritsar Temple, have absolutely no idea of its significance and would not have been any the wiser had Obama gone to see it.

Pity the "boobarians" here, who opine about "stealth Muslims", oblivious to the fundamental tenet of Islam that forbids any Muslim to deny his faith unless his very life is imperiled by the revelation. The expression of faith is the most basic rite of Islam.

Are we having fun yet? Obama's mysterious life? How about the unknown years when for some magical reason W. got into the Air National Guard to avoid the Vietnam draft even though he had never served in the U.S. Air Force nor the Army nor the Navy Air Force. He never flew for the Marines either. Papa Bush influenced a congressman and got him in the Guard to avoid the draft. Now the mystery: After some service (no one has testified if he ever solo-ed a fighter jet) he didn't pass his physical and left a base (I believe in Texas) and showed up in Georgia (I believe) at another Air National Guard base 18 months later. He was never declared A.W.O.L. (probably because of pop's political influence). There you have two mysteries. Can anyone solve either? Did Bush have pot in his blood and couldn't pass his physical? Did he have a doctor's excuse for going AWOL? Did Obama secretly study the Koran? All right, Sherlock?

Obama sort of painted himself into this corner. He never emphasized his Christianity, just how important his black liberation church was. All through the campaign, it was All About Him as the emphasis his handlers showcased. If you venerate, venerate Obama - our Prophet of Hope and Change.

Everyone knew his background - Muslim father, agnostic mother. Then raised by a Muslim stepfather. Then as a young man, Obama said he was faithless..then found Wright's black liberation church.

Once elected, all we heard from him though was on the Muslim side. How noble Islam was, how his Administration would avoid calling terrorism as terrorism or Islamic extremism, just "man-caused disasters". Then his Muslim nation apology tour. And various Ramadan fests at the White House, and his saying that opposing the Ground Zero MOsque was bigoted.
And for two years no sign of church attendence or showing a CHristian influence in his speeches.

I mean, what did the fool expect?? I don't think he is Muslim, but I don't think he is Christian either because it gets in the way of self-adulation. And deep down, I think he blames the West more than the MUslims for 1400 years of warfare.

People of all faiths visit places like this temple because of their unique status in the world. You don't find them in every city, so viewing the place should not stoke"fears" of someone being a closet Muslim. People holding those "fears" have a lot more to worry about than the religion of the President. White coats and straight jackets, anyone.

Well, if Mr. Soetoro is afraid of perceptions and won't visit this site, hopefully The Leader of The Free World will at the very least find another repressive dictator or foreign king to bow before. Again.

Pathetic.

Mr. President (and the advance team) -

Please do not let bullies and idiots influence your choices in your trip to India. I would recommend going to the gurdwara. It's an incredible place. If not in Amritsar, go to another one.

Like a previous commenter mentioned, gurdwaras are meant to be places where anyone is welcome, where anyone can spend time, pray, and eat a simple meal.

The idea that the president would not visit the Golden Temple because he's afraid some people might misinterpret it as a sign that he's Muslim is awful. He would be neglecting the opportunity to educate our general public and denying himself a spectacular experience.

If this is true, I don't know how to react with anything but embarrassment.

Good lord, I hope to God this is not true.

If the President of the United States of America, as head of state, can't visit a sacred site on a state visit while honoring local customs because of how it will look back home, then any hope I've ever had for civil discourse in this country has died.

Thank you Fox, Drudge, Rush, and all your ilk.

This is beyond the pale. I just can't believe this report. Please, please, please let not be true. If the President of the United States of American can't visit a sacred site of a country he is visiting and honors local tradition because of what a few whack jobs might think, than what what hope to I have.

What bothers me the most is that the President handlers have become so hyper averse to perceived controversy. I guess Drudge, Fox News, and thier ilk truly run the political discourse in this country.

Amazing.

how are we supposed to know who barack obama is when barack obama doesn't know who he is?

i can't recall any american president who was so obviously uncomfortable in his own skin -- as obama clearly is. likewise, i can't think of a president ever elected about whom we knew so little.

it's pointless for anyone to say the that the office of the presidency has changed this man when we we've never really known who he was. all we really knew about him was that he cast hundreds of "present" votes while in the illinois state legislature.

it's been 2 years since this fraud mesmerized the 2008 electorate and the journolist cheerleaders, and all we know about him is that he can't take the heat.

scary, isn't it?

ok, then: if such seriousness is important enuff that stark realities over what really are "traditional" rumors of a sort, to the extent that plans are revised from time to time--or should be?--then some serious levity might be entered into, and/or maybe some opinion leaders, or at least a few "celebs," e.g., T. Woods or P. Hilton or J. Lenno could phigurre into reports/opinions otherwise laden with/by the predicable playerrs in diplomatic circles the prez must take into account--if the press is credible enuff, etc.--tho of course, it may be true that far from every headlined development that has been in keeping has been better and/or more pupilar [sic] than most of the phenominal R. The Golden Temple expemplifies inclusiveness, tolerance and brotherhood of humanity. The Sikh prophet who built this Sikh Temple (Gurdwara) requested a muslim holy man to lay the foundation stone to symolize the universaltiy of the place. The complex has doors on all four sides to express that all are welcome, no matter where you come from.
President Obama ought to visit the Golden Temple to emphasize his tolerance to all faiths.
