One Nation rally attendance: Does it matter?

No media organization has provided a very specific estimate of the attendance at Saturday's liberal 'One Nation' rally. The Associated Press merely says that "thousands" of people were there, but that the crowd was "less dense" than the one that greeted Glenn Beck on August 28th. The Post and the New York Times both said "tens of thousands." But organizers claimed they drew a crowd of 175,000 people.

Does crowd size even matter? In today's Fast Fix video, Chris Cillizza argues that it's hard to base anything on these numbers, considering what a small percentage of the population attended or even knew about either rally. After all, more people were at a Louisiana State University football game this weekend than likely went to either political event.

tttvance - The words are VALUES AND RESPECT. Actions are the most reliable way to judge people and their action at the one nation rally does not say they have respects for others. They were the guest of this great Nation and they trash the mall, where memorials for our Veterans and Presidents and other hallow sites are. So what kind of people would do such a thing? Are these the type of people who have wonderful words, but don't walk the talk? It is easy to say anything, but putting it to action is easer if you believe the words you say. Maybe these people left their values and respect at home, because they were mad as hell? We know that some of these groups @ this rally do not like this nation and state it on there websites. So as some older citizens say if you lie down with dog you get flees. If your groups was willing to leave their values at home and gather with groups like the Communist Party USA which was an official “endorsing organization” and anarchist. These are the same groups that are burning the EU. Respect and Values that is what this country needs. Here is a quote to end this with please let me know who it was and what party "And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country". Oh by the way this person believe that cutting taxes was good.

In my thinking all the trash left behind was to provide overtime work for the fellow AFGE union workers. Now that is a real job stimulus plan.

Posted by: tas1spider | October 5, 2010 5:32 PM | Report abuse

An apt, ironic image of the Tea Party Movement: they discarded their trash on the Mall so no mess was left, while their political principles discard human beings-- the poor, the dispossessed, the minority, the gay, the unemployed, the uninsured-- leaving mayhem and broken dreams. But, gee, we left the Mall clean!

Posted by: tttvance | October 5, 2010 2:49 PM | Report abuse

It does matter when the cost of picking up the tab for all that trash left by the One Nation rally is paid for with tax payer money. Deplorable mess left by hypocrites that sob and tout about eating clean, protecting the environment, hugging trees, and recycling.

The conservative March on Washington and Beck's rally were much larger and the ONLY thing that was larger about the One Nation rally was the despicable littering and clean-up cost.

I thought the sponsors of this rally were quite telling. Every union, communist and socialist group you could mention were sponsors. This Nation One title is itself a lie. The message of these old used government styles that grew on the bodies of millions starved, tortured and used as slaves makes these shallow evil lies even more sickening. Our age group watched as people impaled themselves on a wall to escape to freedom just on the other side from socialist and communist perversion. I have a piece of that wall on my desk to make sure I never forget. Our age group sat at the feet of those who relived nightmares of war so that you could march on the mall in Washington. How easily you fall for those lies. How easily you give up your freedoms so many suffered to provide. They want you to fall for the lies thinking you are just too stupid to think for yourself.
And one of the posts was so right. All one had to do is see the difference in the trash left after the two marches. The mall was filled with garbage from the Nation One march. How telling!

If any of you wish to see an example of the difference between the people who attended the Beck Rally and this One Nation Rally, all you need to do is see what the Washington Mall looked like a few hours after the rallies were over.

After the One Nation Rally:
There were tons of trash and litter and pamphlets around the mall and the WWII monument.

After the Beck Rally:
What was left was insignificant ----- many people brought their own bags, filled them up and set them by the full government containers.

Go ahead ---- browse the web and you will find out.

My support goes to people who live life in a respectful manner.

It was fairly obvious that the Beck rally was bigger (just under twice the size of the Ed Shultz rally). The aftermath was a mess after the Schultz rally where the mall was left clean after the Beck rally. These (Schultz people) are the protectors of the environment? If you really want to know which group was bigger and better behaved why not just ask any US Park Police officer who was there. They will be happy to give an unofficial assessment.

I reckon numbers do count. My (admittedly) informal count of misspelled words, grammatical errors, syntax abuses, and stylistic travesties puts the angry Tea Party advocates far ahead of the rather more mild-mannered discourse from the "One Nation" supporters. Maybe angry people don't take a breath before pressing "send." Maybe they just can't spell, but, then again, that sentiment probably brands me as an elitist.

Jon Stewarts rally will be filled with people who are going to a comedy show. Making fun of the Americans involved with the Tea Party and lots of grown men and women saying F..K in public. Getting huge belly laughs from these fools who think that's the funniest thing in the world.. Yea, that will be uplifting alright!

Meanwhile, back at the Mall...
I particularly enjoyed the Communist Party USA banners along with the Latin LGBT blouses, but I'm glad I didn't have to clean up after that trash.

This Tea bagger thing is so played. It was originated by a lefty who had to explain it to us Tea Party people. Which shows the contrast. Tea Party named after an event which led to our nation becoming the beacon of freedom to the world. Compared to a disparaging name for a sex act. You make the call! i believe its use says more about them than us.

Posted by: JJStryder | October 5, 2010 10:05 AM | Report abuse

The MSM only mentions the rally was put on by unions, but, if you looked at the list of supporters, it was filled with Democratic Socialist (Markists) and Communist Parties. I remember the Cold War and the abuses to people, fearing for our own lives and way of life.

Why would you want to live in a Nanny-State that only stifles individual creativity. To give up the freedom to grow and prosper on your own. Are there abuses of the system here? Yes. But, if the government was to actually enforce the laws instead of making deals, then these abuses would be minimized, including the abuses of government.

We don't need to ratically change the system, but, we do need to take control of our elected officials (servants to the people) and throw the bums out.

SILENT NO MORE!

Since the Park Service no longer tries to count, it isn't possible to know how many people were at either rally. All we have is the word of propagandists on either side of the equation. At the height of both rallies, the attendance looked about the same.
Reading the Tea-baggers comments on here, one would doubt the oft repeated meme that their movement isn't one of hate simply doesn't appear to be valid; especially when what binds them together is their fear. The words of the Tea-baggers that I have witnessed on this forum and others are hateful, vile, ignorant, and lack articulation.
It is interesting that fear would compel so many people to gather together on the Washington Mall to watch the presentation of a fanatic (Beck) who obviously has a Nazi fetish and idolizes (displays) some of the worst tyrants known to modern history. This particular "Restoring Honor" rally seems to have been inspired by the famous Nuremberg Rallies of the 1930s. I never was able to grasp what honor they were trying to restore: Is it the fact that a ...uhmmm... non-Aryan won the presidency? One cannot help but wonder.
Since the Tea-baggers like to collectively refer to everyone who does not agree with them as "communists" and "socialists" and other misapplied labels from the cold war era, I cannot find it improper to refer to the Tea Baggers as "fascists;" especially since one of the defining qualities of fascism is to expel any group that doesn't hold the same views as the collective political body. The fact that they support the corporate take over of the United States and desire a government that has no power to govern these multi-national corporations only supports the view that they are indeed corporate-fascists. Their practices demonstrate that they worship the Almighty Dollar rather than our Our Creator. At the end of the day they would appear to have more in common with Mussolini and Franco than they do George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

"Does crowd size even matter?" No ... IF both had been representative of the ideals and committment of the crowd. However, to compare a paid crowd (some who were students FORCED to attend) who were given the day off work, free transportation, free food and given signs to hold up with those who paid their own way, on their own time/ dollar etc, and because of their committment to smaller and more responsible government - and then PICKED UP AFTER THEMSELVES to the first group is a dishonest joke.

This is what bothers me about our education system. Teaching socialism to our kids.
NEWS FLASH: Socialism doesn't work because it requires other peoples money and runs out. It (the government) decide winners (usually means themselves) and losers (the people). It discourages individual thinking because the government tells you what to do and when. THOUGHOUT HISTORY, SOCIALISM HAS FAILED.
Why would anyone want to give up their freedoms granted under the country's mission statement; The Declaration of Independence. Maybe you've been taught America is Bad. I'm here to say that we have made mistakes, but, you remove freedom from America and you will not find it anywhere else. Get out and make something of yourself, not rely on Mom and Dad or the Government.

I can't believe Rachel Weiner is actually concerned about the size of the One Nation Rally. Where in the h-- is your Country's pride? Have you seen the pictures of what these animals did to the Mall and the disgrace they laid at the base of the WWII Memorial? Are you stupid or just so far liberal, you can't admit this bunch of lunatics that included radicals, socialists and communists were way out of line, had nothing to communicate except to gather and had the gaul to disgrace our landmarks and all you can think about is the size of the crowd. I am so sick and tired of people like you and the elite media who overshadow the dirt that congregates at rally's like this one and yet, are not concerned that the brazen communists were happy to display their signs. For the past few months, all we have heard about is the racist and negative signs that the tea partiers carry. My God, did you actually take a look at the signs these liberal pieces of dirt were carrying? Somebody better wake up in the Country really soon or we are doomed. I'm fed up with socialists and communists taking over this Country and this includes our President who gleefully supported this rally last weekend. My Father fought in WWII. How dare these idiots disgrace that Memorial. What right do they have? I feel for you when our Lord puts his finger down on you and shows you whose in charge. I hope that every military group comes after you. We are being taken over by Unions that care nothing for this Country. How can we allow this to happen. I blame Barack Hussein Obama, Muslim, Foreigner, illegally in our White House for every thing that is happening. How in the world could sensible, common sense people have voted for this traitor to our Country. If you can't see what this guy in our White House and his Union, socialist and communist buddies are doing to this Country, then you are not only blind, but you are stupid and deserve what you will get in the end. I personally will spend every available dollar I have to fight this communist takeover. Bless all of our soldiers who have died for freedom and fighting communism, as well as our soldiers who are currently fighting the cause. All of you who attended the 10/2 failure should be ashamed of your self, your life and the pathetic cause you are representing. You deserve to be serving time in prison for your actions as a traitor to this Country.

I think the size of the trash piles left matter. The 8/28 folks cleaned up their mess - and aren't they the ones who hate the environment? Those 10/2 folks left trash, plastic water bottles, signs everywhere including the new World War II memorial and they're the environmentalists aren't they?

Political Hypocrisy at its finest.

I'd be careful about calling people idiots for posting accurate estimates. If you lived in the D.C. area (or had actually ever been to the Mall, for that matter), you'd be familiar enough with the terrain to know that the crowds pictured at the 8/28 rally were a small fraction of the absurdly inflated 500,000 number that Beck's supporters floated.

Yes, LSU's stadium holds about 100,000 fans, and believe me, it could have accommodated every one of the Beckoids and had plenty ofroom left over. The professional counting firm that CBS hired was as close to the truthful numbers as can be expected. When I look at that sat photo of the Beck rally I'm tempted to think they actually rounded upward a bit to spare poor Glennie's feelings.

sherardg, get real!! Can you actually look at the aerial pictures of the 8-28 rally and the 10-2 rally and say there were more people at 10-2? If so, you are as delusional as Ed Schultz.

As for the article, I guess the crowd size only matters if they beat Beck's rally, which they came no where no the crowd size that Beck had on 8-28.

****************************
Speaking of mental midgets. 500,000 to 800,000 is a longshot. I was at both ralies. I live near the mall. Believe, me, it was not what you say. Enthusiasm gap, schmenthusiasm gap. Without the benefit of months and months of advertising and promotion on Fox News Channel (in fact, I'm only aware of Ed Schultz on MSNBC doing any kind of TV promotion), the One Nation Working Together rally in Washington DC has gathered more supporters than Glenn Beck's much ballyhooed rally, which I will lovingly refer to as "Whitestock". Preliminary satellite estimates put the crowd size at 175,000 to 200,000 at about noon EST. I think they are scared at what occurred on Saturday. And the lies. And now they have a Breitbart video of how they trashed the mall. I was there. They show the beck folks at the washington memorial leaving the event which is blocks away from the actual event. They show the one nation event and film the area directly below the lincoln memorial and you see some trash. This area was closed to the beck folks and and believe me, there was trash left over too. You see I live in new the mall area and go to all the rallies. They say "Organizers of Saturday's "One Nation Working Together" rally at the Lincoln Memorial are proud of their diversity".

Well duhhh. Yes there was diversity. Or course it was a union organization. As for diversity. There where whites, black, Asians, Hispanics and gays and lesbians. And they were all mingling about. . I went to the Beck Rally, and the Tea Party rally, and there was diversity there too. There were whites, lilly whites, off whites, red necks, neo nazis and good old white folks. . All the twenty of so blacks were herded on stage to give the illusion of diversity. That's a lot of diversity.

So what's the beef. As for the crowds, I can safely say they were as big as the Beck crowd. And yes a lot left after a couple of hours to go home. They have jobs and many can't afford to stay overnight like the Beck folks could. .It was a grand day last Saturday and a scary one for the right wing nuts.

I was there as part of the media from 9am till 5pm. The crowd looked thin till about 1pm, then you saw it swell all the way to the monument and on both sides of the reflecting pond. Probably peaked around 2pm. Then started to thin out. So pay attention to baggies with pictures denigrating the rally. Check out the shadows as to what time they were taken. And the crowd to the front was very, very packed all day as you can see on this site http://wp.me/pNmlT-rz. The rally mood was not mean, or angry (except perhaps for attitudes towards the tea Party). Maybe frustrated because of Republican obstruction and the media's continued focus on their narrative of 'the angry electorate' and their obsession with the Tea Party minority and their constant shrieking of fear and divisiveness. But regardless of the crowd size, who was there, or any other minutia, what it accomplished was huge. The forces for an inclusive country have been reinvigorated and now realize what's at stake in November (http://wp.me/pNmlT-q5)

You can tell by what's written here, on this blog http://wp.me/pNmlT-rz, and elsewhere that the Tea Party is not terrified. And the best part is there'll be another huge rally of like minded people and young voters October 30th, right before the elections when the Rally to Restore Sanity takes place and it may be even bigger. The baggies willl be apoplectic!

It really doesn't matter how many people attended, especially when the losing side, the group with the much smaller crowds, had just that - tiny attendance. It was actually funny to watch the left and media allies try and hype up the size of the One Nation 'event.' It was so great to have such heavy communist and socialist involvement. In fact, maybe the few real Americans turned off by that decided to leave. We all noticed how the love fest broke up well ahead of schedule.
