Sarah Palin: I couldn't afford to stay governor

By Rachel Weiner

UPDATE: In an interview with Barbara Walters published Wednesday, Sarah Palin said that she thinks she could beat President Obama in 2012.

"If you ran for president, could you beat Barack Obama?" Walters asked.

"I believe so," Palin replied.

* * * * *

The New York Times' long magazine profile of Sarah Palin reports that she's seriously considering a presidential run. But it also contains an interesting anecdote about her decision to step down as governor of Alaska in 2009:

One afternoon in June 2009, Gov. Sarah Palin was sitting in the Washington office of her friend Fred Malek, whom she met through McCain during the 2008 campaign. She was listening to the former White House aide to Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford map out logical next steps to her political career. Focus on amassing a good record as governor, he advised her. Run for a second term. Develop some policy expertise. Do some extensive overseas travel. Generate some good will by campaigning for fellow Republicans.
Malek told me that he could tell that this wasn't what Palin wanted to hear. Here's the problem, she replied impatiently: I've got a long commute from my house to my office. I don't have the funds to pay for my family to travel with me, and the state won't pay for it, either. I can't afford to have security at my home -- anybody can come up to my door, and they do. Under the laws of Alaska, anybody can file suit or an ethics charge against me, and I have to defend it on my own. I'm going into debt.

Three weeks after talking to Malek, Palin resigned and cut a book deal.

The Anchorage Daily News reported in March 2009 that Palin owed more than a half-million dollars in legal debts after fighting numerous ethics violation claims. The state personnel board went on to declare that the legal fund set up while she was governor to help pay those debts was itself illegal. (The fund was shut down and relaunched.) Palin cited the ethics charges in a post-resignation interview with ABC News: "[I]t has been costing our state millions of dollars. It's cost Todd and me. You know the adversaries would love to see us put on the path of personal bankruptcy so that we can't afford to run."

Sarah Palin has used the "Lamestream Media" for personal gain. She will lead all of us to believe that she is going to run for President, in reality she's going to make you think she's running all the way til the bitter end. From what I understand in her book she has brought up the almighty Rev. Wright saying that President & Mrs. Obama listened to Rev. Wright preach against white people. When I heard this I was left to wonder. Why would she bring that up, especially in such a divisive manner? My only conclusion is that she wants to continue the division. My! does she have a hatred toward BLACKS? Another thing, did she teach her daughter to dislike gays? I understand that one of her daughters wrote something discriminatory toward gay people on Facebook. If you think about it Sarah Palin is a Hypocrit. Obama listened to Rev. Wright speak against WHITES for 20 years as she said, and her daughter listened to her talk negatively about gay people for 15 years. Sarah, who's zooming who?

Palin is more interesting in making a quick buck selling books to showcase her petty vindictiveness, delivering shallow, snarky speeches laden with stale, banal talking points, and being on the receiving end of softball interviews given by her cheerleading squad at FOX PAC than she is in being a thoughtful, effectual political force.

In short, Palin doesn't want to be a serious politician. She only wants to play one on T.V.

A very pretty face and figure are what make Sarah Palin. She's otherwise, a dolt. She glories in her "refudiate" being ensconced in modern American lexicon. What an idiot! And, it's interesting that more Alaskans supported Lisa Murkowski, and the Democrat, than Palin's choice for senator: Miller. He's a thug, if I ever saw a thug.
Sarah Palin is addicted to stringing together one "15 minutes of fame" after another. She's the one who should be given a time out, not Levi Johnson. Sarah Palin isn't Presidential material. Every time she opens her mouth, we should hear: "So WHY did you leave? Because you couldn't 'afford' to stay? THAT's a reason to leave? I suspect she knew then that she would lose any bid for the Senate seat that was just run against McDonald, Miller, and Murkowski.
Hopefully, Murkowski will continue to snipe @ Palin for the next two years. Palin can get all the tutoring she can handle: the woman hasn't the capacity to learn the heavy duty things a Presidential candidate needs to learn. She's a joke.
She should hear herself say it ... again and again. "I couldn't afford to stay as governor." I had ... other things in mind. Get her clothing bills; her hair & styling bills; her private jets or whatever, since she lost the Vice Presidency.
We need to understand just how big a joke she really is.

Washington & Jefferson set the standard for staying the course in public service. They served decades at great personal and financial sacrifice and didn't quit or make excuses. Another Governor of a different party quit in WV this week to further his political career and live at the public trough the rest of his life. There is something called "No Excuse Leadership". Governors Palen and Manchin can never shake their reputations as Quitters and Cowardly Crass Opportunists. Running around the country or being a legislator are not real jobs. The Founding Fathers knew that fact, which is why salaries were low and being in the Legislature was a only a part time job so the members could stay close to the commonweal and hold a real job.

Posted by: spartan11 | November 19, 2010 4:09 PM | Report abuse

So Palin quit because she couldn't afford to be governor? And that's after illegally billing the State of Alaska for travel expenses for her children for private trips? And then she has the gall to complain about fighting the ethics complaints that she brought upon herself by being unethical and abusing her office for personal financial gain? She is a trainwreck. I find it fascinating to see the conservatives defending her so strongly when she is so clearly a disaster that has happened and continues to happen My favorite is that she has become what the McCain/Palin campaigns mocked Obama for in the 2008 campaign -- a celebrity famous only for beig a celebrity. She has done nothing, is doing nothing and continues to be a "leader" for conservatives. This is the best they can do?! Yipes.

Wow!! I never thought I would see the NYT tell the truth behind Sarah's 'quitting'. Congratulations. Now, maybe, it will attract a wiser, better-informed readership. Articles have been biased, and comments indicate ignorance of the issues. Name-calling is what they do best, without, obviously, a clue as to the issues and facts. Hopefully, its 'reporting' will vastly improve.

I am a little sick and tired of being called a hater by a party who has a quitter and a loser as a leader. I think you all need to look at your selves and ask why you have allowed yourselves to be so dumbed down that you would accept as a leader a person who has nothing to offer this country except soundbites. What did she ever to for Alaska before they tossed her out on ethnic charges? Really if they loved her so much why would they even have to investigate her in the first place. If she was so innocent she should have stood up to the people who were accusing her and cleared her name. Only the guilty flee.

One has to ask why were there so many lawsuits and ethic problems?

Sarah Palin is just a pretty face. Do people really think she has enough experience to be a president?

I don't believe she is smart enough. She had no clue how to run and state and guide her own daughter.

They are both losers and quiters. Sarah quit as the governor and Bristol quit keeping her legs together. These people need help.

God help us if Sarah ever runs for another leadership position again.

She was sued for advertising for a clothing company when she wore her husband's jacket with a logo on it one day. They persecuted her and drove her out of office. I would love to see her as president. However, I do not think she can win. But who else do the Republicans have? Huckabee....Gingrich? Give me a break.

What "unfettered capitalism"? Our system is in trouble because of the high taxes and hobbling regulations and restrictions put on business forcing them to outsource to remain competitive or go out of business. Yes, we should all be very afraid that liberals will completely destroy this country.

Okay - this is such a typical uniformed republican response. #1, your taxes are actually lower than they were under George W. Bush. The democrats are the ones who have given small business multiple tax cuts and they are the ones who are fighting to continue to offer tax cuts to the middle class. On the other hand, the republicans are so intent on extending the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest among us (and by the way, doesn't it make you wonder why they are so intent?)that they are willing for your taxes to go up in order to get it. Doesn't it also make you wonder why these huge corporations backed the republicans in the mid-terms. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. Which brings me to your 2 point, regulations. Lack of regulation and oversight is what made it possible for these wealthy folks to gut the economy in the first place. There are rules to follow and when your whole focus is to get around the rules, stiffer rules have to be put in place. I'm tired of having to wonder if every big company is trying to stick it to me as a consumer. It isn't the democrats you should be blaming, they are the ones trying to protect you. I encourage you to research some of these facts before you make choices on who to support because it really will effect your bottom line.

Unfettered Capitalism is what caused so many US jobs to be outsourced, and so many Mom & Pop businesses to close. It was pretty great before all that happened.

No matter what I say about her experience or her ability, it will not change your mind set. I have to confess, your views will not change the respect I have for this lady.

When I read in the paper that some man in Madison, Wis. shot his television and the SWAT team was called out....now you liberal need to stop and think about where all this anger is coming from, good gosh, go to anger management.

It is time people control themselves like the "tea party" people have done.

Those people have done it right, they went to the polls Nov.2 and showed their feelings.

You can do the same.

Sarah Palin is not going to run, she has a wonderful life and a great family. She is too happy doing what she is doing, and I say more power to her.

To your last sentence, anytime charismatic charlatans appear on the scene in time of political and economic chaos offering up simple solutions to complex issues and a major part of their platform is scapegoating others and trying to dictate the debate w/o actually debating, I think it is very important to call someone like that out. Once upon a time, the German press and government dismissed an Austrian art school reject who found a home in right wing political circles; coalition of rural social conservatives, industrial elites and imperial regime hangovers. He was laughed off as a clown, a bad actor and a lowly paperhanger and his followers were dismissed as low class drunken hooligans. Sound familiar? His name: Adolf Hitler. His party: the Nazi Party.

The Tea Party is similar: white, rural social conservatives; corporate elites like Koch Industries and old regime hangovers like Dick Armey and Sal Russo. While the art school reject at least had some interest in policy heavy lifting, Palin has the charisma and the simple soundbite solutions down to a tee. In her world, all of our problems are caused by "others," liberals, the media, Democrats. Regulation caused mortgage crisis, even though This meme has been discredited by various industry and empirical sources but remains credible among the neocons and Tea Party types. It is a reference to the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, which required regulated DEPOSITORY institutions to invest in the communities they operated in. It had little to do with making loans to people with bad credit, nor did a preceding act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (1974), which simply required institutional lenders to provide a written denial notice to applicants, with the economic/credit reasons as to why.

The lenders at core of subpime loan crisis were generally unregulated or looseley regulated mortgage banks and brokers that were not subject to Community Reinvestment Act rules. According to Randall Kroszner, former Fed governor, Bush appointee and Milton Friedman disciple, the CRA's contribution to subprime crisis did not exist...

To beat Obama, or any other potential candidate(Rep. or Dem), Palin will need a JD or a PhD degree. Hey Sarah, please start now, go back to school or do it on-line to upgrade your education to a superior level.

karendisbrow's remarks are typical of the right today, buzzwords and all-Ivy League elite, Palin is plain spoken and can relate to the majority.

First of all, education has zip to do with alma mater. Many people go to state colleges and community colleges. It has to do with innate curiosity, which Palin has time and again shown a disdain for; don't bother her w/facts, she already has her mind made up.

Common sense in context Palin and her backers use it is simply a cover for proud ignorance and anti-intellectual screeching. I am sorry but managing the world economy and international diplomacy are far more involved, nuanced and requires more intelligence than being a commercial fishery operator or owning a small town hardware store. Palin cannot even answer what she reads, refuses to answer questions outside of her Fox, AM Radio and Facebook bubbles. Barbara Walters long ago became just another celebrity groupie, refusing to ask the tough questions, hence Palin feels safe speaking to Walters. Why won't she Meet the Press or Face the Nation? Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were interviewed by Bill O'Reilly. Palin would score a major coup if she went on Rachel Maddow or Olbermann or Hardball; show she can handle people hostile to her. If she cannot even handle a Katie Couric interview, how is she going to handle Hu Jintao or the leftist populist leaders in Latin America?

The Palinbots' arguments basically are buzzwords and soundbites, just like Palin: Lamestream media; liberal bias; Ivy League elites; Soros; ACORN; Alinsky; socialism; small government; America, baseball and apple pie. Everything is their fault. She assumes no personal responsibility (contradicts conservatism there) and has yet to offer up a sepcific set of policy ideas beyond tax cuts and deregulation, which both have been discredited twice; 1980s and today: S&L's; ballooning debt and deficits; subprime crisis; in hock to China, Japan and the EU for eternity and worst recession in 80 years. What will she cut? So called welfare spending barely cracks 5% of Fed budget. The Iron Triangle of the budget is defense, Social Security and Medicare, with defense being 20 percent and when factoring parallel security spending-nuke upkeep, intelligence, Homeland Security, it gets up to 25% of the budget. Education is not even 10% of Fed budget. So, what will Palin cut? Will she follow Ron Paul's ideas on minimizing tyhe military industrial complex and the cost to maintain a presence throughout the globe? Or, will she be like the nobles the Revolutionaries threw off, spending unlimited resources on foreign entanglements and the lavishness of the leaders and elites, screw the middle and working class? Her low taxes, cut spending mantra has never happened because tax revenue losses have to be covered by borrowing and spending always increases; the only change is WHERE the spending goes; big defense contractors, oil and gas subsidies or grants, etc.

Palinbots: Grasping at straws.

Now that Palin has admitted that she is "available " for MONEY, I guess we all know what that makes her, don't we? The woman has NOTHING else to sell BUT herself, tho' she could make a living out of teaching lessons on how to use family members as "Cash Cows" as well. Bristol certainly has "made" a name for herself, hasn't she? Can't dance, Can't sing, can't act, but she CAN shake that thing, can't she? ...and the money keeps rolling in. MONEY is their god. It is their sword and buckler. WHO gave this woman the POWER she now wields politically? She couldn't pour urine out of a boot with the directions written on the heel! I don't care much for Ms. Pallin but she has hit on a point that does deserve serious discussion - is our political system devolving into an aristocratic endeavor where only the wealthy can afford to serve? If so, we have only the illusion of representative government.

Last year the Center for Responsive Politics reported that there were 237 millionaires in Congress. I don't think the last election did much to change that.

Posted by: jaustin55 | November 18, 2010 1:08 PM | Report abuse

If Palin's statement that she could not afford to continue to be Governor..one must question why she ran for the office in the first place...

SHE KNEW WHAT THE JOB PAID..WHY TAKE IT IF YOU CAN NOT AFFORD IT???...How many people would actually run for an office that did not have a pay level that they could live on?

One thing we have learned from the only sitting Governor to resign from office for reasons other than health or legal issues, is that she does know how to lie...and it comes very easy to her.

An example of this is that the state, like all other states, DOES PAY for the travel expenses of family members as long as the the Governor's travel is for business of the state, in addition it also PAYS for 24 hour security for both the Goveror and immediate family both during travel and at home. A key
point is that she also did not spend much time in the state capital..she did most of "work" from home.

Her problems started with ethic issues that directly relates to her own actions when she tried to have a state police officer who was married to her sister fired. When the Chief of Alaska State Police refused to fire him, she fired the Chief.

The she created the ethics problem all by her self.

Mrs Palin has the ability to create her own problems..let us not forget the clothing bills for the Plain family that totaled over $125,000 that she charged to the national Repub party. When was questioned, she first denied it, then said she would pay for them...but since she now says that she could not afford to be Governor, how in the world would she be able to pay for the clothes??

Like so many of Miss Sarah's, statements, it does not ring true.

You didn't get mad when lack of oversight and regulations from the Bush Administration caused US Citizens to lose 12 trillion dollars in investments, retirement, and home values.

You finally got mad when a black man was elected President and decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick. Yes, illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, job losses by the millions, stealing your tax dollars to make the rich richer, and the worst economic disaster since 1929 are all okay with you, but helping fellow Americans who are sick along with many other things... Oh, Hell No!!"

Good grief what a whiner. The length and cost of the commute was always there and should have been known before she took the office of governor. If this was to be a problem, why did she take the job, and then complain about it later? Once there, apparently she couldn't do the job without embroiling herself in litigation over ethics issues. She then took the easy way to make money by signing a book deal, and bailed on the role of governor. Maybe if the role of President didn't suit her in some way, she'd quit in the middle of her term. This person is hardly reliable and seems intent on blaming everyone and everything else for her shortfalls. There may even be a maturity issue here.

Of course Palin. If you would have stayed as Governor for the full term you would have shown how inadequate you really are. Using the "couldn't afford to stay" issue is just avoiding the real issue.

I really can't understand how a so called newspaper like the Washington Post, it's far left agenda aside would allow a stupid (or even an intelligent one) post be repeated a dozen times in it's comments section. Don't you have any intelligent person monitoring these comments to weed them out since they are repetitious besides being inane?

I am NOT a Palin fan and as a republican would not entertain the idea that she would get the nomination because ,despite her attractive and sunny disposition, does not have what it takes to be POTUS just as the current occupant hasn't the skills despite his similar ability to attract a following with his use of a teleprompter and flowery speech.

The rancor that Palin engenders in the leftist ranks of the Dems actually shows how much they fear her.Just as she invigorated the dead McCain campaign in her initial appearance that's how quickly she became a drag on his campaign which was DOA. He was a bad selection to begin with. As one who is quite a bit older than he is the Pubs needed a fresh face to withstand the attacks on GWB.

Palin will help bring in some votes but she will not be a factor in the race for a nominee in '12. With the lock the Dems have on the votes of unions ,minorities and other groups who prosper from government largess the Pubs will need a candidate with the ability to put out fresh ideas not some gadfly like Palin and those in power know it.

Here's hoping they will select the right people who will prevent this lurch toward socialism. Capitalism and entrepreneurship has been what made this country great.

Sarah Paylin is an idiot. When her disapproval ratings are much higher than the presidents have ever been and even people who like her say she should never be president. Can't you just imagine her brood in the White House? They wouldn't know class if it hit them in the face. The US would be a laughing stock of the world. People all over the world are already laughing at her and think those who support her are crazy! Too much!

I think some of you are underestimating Mrs. Palin. She is a beautiful woman, very charismatic, and she pushes exactly all of the right buttons to turn the extreme right-wing Republican base on. First, she's Christian and right-to-life (or she pretends to be). Second, she's bloodthirsty and loves weapons and is a war hawk. Third, she has her enemies in her sights and uses talk-radio sound bites to "demolish" them. And she knows exactly who the biggest enemy is: All Liberals. All Democrats. Anyone who disagrees with her repetitive talking points, which may or may not have any validity. Validity is not important, because only educated people will bother to think outside their own narrow prejudices. So all Liberals become Parasites, welfare-queens, Communists, Socialists. If they die in ditches because they've lost their life savings, their homes, and their health insurance...and hopefully, soon, their social security and Medicare...then that because they depend on GOVERNMENT to support them. They're worthless and not worthy of Life in the first place (only the UNBORN have the Right to Life, you know). The rest of us....well, we're not our brother's keepers. And if they've fallen on bad luck, well...that's because they're living in sin. They've made the Wrong Choices. Besides, they might be...Heaven Forbid...a member of a Union. Or a Teacher. Or a graduate of an Ivy League School. The Wealthy are the Ones Who Are Right With God. And they are the Ones appointed to Rule the rest of us. And Mrs. Palin is toward the Top of God's Blessed List. And as soon as she can tear that damn government down and let the Business Men take over without any pesky laws or taxes getting in their way, then that is what God...and the American People...want. It is what is Meant to Be. The fact that she has to meet the approval of the uber-wealthy in order to get that nomination might be a little problematic, but heck! She can do it! And if you think for one minute that the courts in this country will stand in her way, you are mistaken. They're stacked. Don't underestimate her. She's dangerous. And she's not above inciting her backers to riot or to murder her enemies by exercising their "second amendment rights."

Yes and Mrs. Palin also believes in the devil and exorcism as witnessed by the video-audio tape of her under going such an act. I wonder if they really got the devil out? Inquiring minds want to know the answer to that relevant question?

I hope that Mrs Palin goes for it. I really truely do. I hope she wins I really truely do. I want that hypothisis tested in a national campaign. It would be very interesting and enlightining to watch Mrs Palin debate the President in an open challange. It would be good to see Murdock's minion out there exposed to the public not protected by fox news answering all those basic questions about the tea bagger political philosophy. Like will you, Mrs Palin, keep the Federal Government out of my Medicare program?, Will you, Mrs. Palin prove that rascal is a Kenyan? Will you,Mrs. Palin, prove that rescuing GM was a really really bad idea, etc, etc, etc... Yeah it ought to be a lot of fun watching that.

Maybe Palin could win the Presidency. Many reasons offered why Palin can't, e.g., lack of gravitis, intellectual curiosity, or serious prior political experience, applied to W as well, and yet W was elected President twice. Granted, W's first election was a gift from the conservative-dominated Supreme Court, but the Court is still dominated by that faction. And as H.L. Menkin once noted, "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

On the other hand, Palin also believed that Joe Miller could beat Lisa How-Do-You-Spell-That-Last-Name!

The left are sooo angry and hate-filled, it's pathetic. Palin is plain spoken and has way more common sense than Obama and the professional politicians they embrace. She wouldn't kow-tow to dictators like O and apologize for America's very existence to all and sundry. She loves this country.

For some odd reason, the left thinks you are somehow more deserving if you graduate from an ivy league school. The arrogance and ignorance of the leftist elites knows no bounds, and they are dismantling America brick by brick. Lots of us resent it and stepped up so as to stop it via this last election.

Palin reminds me of a young Margaret Thatcher. She has guts, smarts, can-do spirit, a happy family. I love her. I don't know if she's quite ready to lead the nation or not, but I would love to see her serve as vice president with Romney as president.

Maybe she was accused of ethics violations because she was violating ethics laws.

If she runs for President, she'll see the House go back to the Dems, the GOP officially dead in the water, and herself to blame the next day.

Sarah Palin, please run for President!

Unethical behavior leads to ethics complaints. Palin should not complain about having to pay to defend against what she could have avoided by exhibiting ethical behavior in the first place. What an idiot!

Ok, I'm gonna do it: The Ignore the Palins Challenge. As baffling and morbidly entertaining as they are, the only way to get rid of the Palins is to stop indicating to the media that we are each guilty of wanting to hear about them. If you are reading this comment, you too are guilty. I will not click on one more link associated with them starting today...remember...this is how we got rid of Paris Hilton, we as an American society can do this again to the Paris Hilton of politics! Hey, I am a Goldwater era conservative and I would love to get Obama out of office, but I want Sarah Palin off the d#@n planet.

If forced to chose between the two, I would chose Obama -Palin is an ignorant dangerous theocratic. She has proved herself to be a self-absorbed phoney with no clue how to govern, and no real concern for anything beyond her own skin. She is John McCain's version of "Lonesome Rhodes."

Obama is no peach, but Palin is beyond the pale.

Posted by: DemoDevil | November 17, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Sarah Palin faces two major challenges that will keep her from being elected in 2012--or ever. First she will have to get past a number of other Republicans/Conservatives that want the nomination just as bad as she does. She won't be able to blame the liberal media or "gotcha" questions when she falls on her face at the first Republican primary debate.

If by some strange circumstance she does get the nomination, she will still have to convince the moderate independents that she is not the same Sarah that they saw in the 2008 campaign. Good luck with that.

The GOP will make sure she's not nominated, even if it means they have to smear her themselves. They will do anything they can to keep her from winning the nomination. The other thing is, they really don't have anyone who they can put up against Obama and even get close to winning. Romney's out--he instituted government health care in Mass. Newt has too many skeletons. Pawlenty is too faux angry, Giuliani is just a loser in general. Chris Christie is too fat and screwed his state by not approving a tunnel that would've helped his citizens. Jindal and Huckabee are nuts. They have no one.

Sarah Palin is deluded and very foolish. The Republican establishment would cringe at the very thought of her running against Obama and will not support her bid for the opportunity for the following reasons: The majority of Americans regard Sarah Palin as being unqualified for president. Sarah Palin lacks the gravitas, intellectual curiosity and requesite abilities to be president. She could not govern the state of Alaska and abruptly resigned. Sarah Palin has a history of quitting jobs. She could not answer questions about her knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be president. She didn't even know what the Bush doctrine was nor could she even cite what newspapers she claimed to have read. Sarah Palin has no tolerance for public scrutiny nor does she have any tolerance for media inquiries into her background. In this very competitive political environment, people do not get a second chance to make a first impression and Palin is no exception.

Some of you clowns actually believe that a 4-time college dropout has the intellectual werewithal to be POTUS? You can't be serious.

Well, looks like she's already garnered the Neanderthal vote.

Posted by: owiz | November 17, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Palin's "long commute" excuse for quitting is so full of crap on every level. Ms. Payline would have more credibility if she simply admitted that she wanted to ditch the Governor of Alaska job to maximize her MAKE MONEY window while her 15 minutes were in play.

Clearly, she balked at Malek's very sound advice for a path to real credibility and real opportunity toward a meaningful political career. She kicked his counsel to the curb in order to pursue her real ambition - MAKE MONEY!!

If running for president gets her an extended 15 minutes, then she really doesn't need to win the thing, since her goal is MAKE MONEY!! After all, VPOTUS only pays $227,000 per year, POTUS pays a measly $400,000 per year. Chump change compared to what she's raking in right now, and - assuming she actually won - during those potential years of *actually working* she would not be allowed to get paid to appear at places or anything else lest she seek to be impeached for bribery, so I doubt she'd find the *actual job* appealing in any way on any level. I can see where she'd want to keep her high-profile plate spinning for a few more years though, so she might be motivated to run but not to win.

Besides, when you routinely get mentioned on Entertainment Tonight alongside Kate Gosselin and "Dancing With The Stars", it's safe to say that your "gravitas" (if you ever had any) has fallen into the abyss of mediocrity from which no one can climb, muchless claw out of AND summit Mount POTUS all within one election cycle.

But this lifelong Democrat certainly hopes that she tries :) (Hey, it'd be a win/win -- Sarah Payline would get years more mileage out of her money-making 15 minutes, and we'd win the White House!)

Let's face it, she's basically ready for the remake of "Clueless" or better yet "Clueless II - How a quitter makes millions". Anyone who thinks she is qualified to be president of the United States or would even vote for her... well, they must simply be less intelligent and less well-read than she is.

I give her credit for cashing in on her popularity with those that are obsessed with her. But she doesn't even understand the constitution, much less real governing. This is a classic example of the "Peter Principle" and if you don't know what that is... then you're probably a Palin supporter!!!

Even Fox seems to be tiring of her.
Senator Murkowski's win in Alaska underscores the point; Sarah could not hold her own in an Alaska election, let alone a national one, and the party knows this.

WAGTHEDOG1's and articrose's comments same propaganda with no facts or evidence whatsoever.

WAGTHEDOG1's remarks that it was George Soros is another typical Fox/AM Radio taliking point. He is the far right's other baddie, along with Emanuel and Obama. All of Queen Sarah's issues are caused by foreigners, Jews and blacks. One question: ANY FACTS TO BACK UP CLAIM THAT SOROS BEHIND COMPLAINTS? FACTS, NOT FOX OR LIMBAUGH TALKING POINTS?!

While Andree McCleod, a one time Palin supporter who was snubbed for state job filed many complaints, what is OMITTED by the Palinbots is that she also happened on fact that Palin was using private e-mail accounts to do PUBLIC business; attempting to conceal communications and was a breach of her promises of ethical, transparent government.

http://www.adn.com/2009/07/06/855855/palin-critics-defend-their-actions.html

While most complaints dismissed, also keep in mind the Personnel Board were 3 handpicked appointees who were at will appointees of the governor. Even then, she had to settle the improper billing for taking her kids to events they were NOT invited to AND had to amend her tax returns.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/24/palin.travel/index.html

The 2/3 GOP Legislative Council and a report by Republican Steve Branchflower found her culpable for ethics breaches in Troopergate.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=6004368&page=1

As far as flawed ethics complaint process, whose fault is that? As has been established, she was absent and disengaged most of tome she was governor and the end ethics reform bill she touted as a crucial achievement was driven by supporters who had to settle for a watered down bill because of her apathy for the actual nuts and bolts of governing.

We liberals may or may not have made Palin. But we _will_ destroy her. The once-powerful Christian Coalition has been marginalized. The same will happen to the ultra-extremist Tea Partiers, probably by the end of 2011 after members have spent their SS and unemployment benefits to enrich Palin. Palin couldn't defeat Daffy Duck in a general election, much less the thoughtful, intelligent, moderate, (perhaps-too-)compromising man we now have in the White House. Tell me. Exactly what qualifications does Palin have to be POTUS??? I bet no one can answer that question.

Funny that the previous governor did not have these complaints, nor the current governor. And why all the ethics complaints Sarah? She acts as though they are mosquitoes, something she did not cause. Her answers help explain some of the ethics complaints though, like taking per diem when staying at her own house while traveling to Wasilla on business, having Alaska pay for her family's travel when she was on business, etc.

The last time I remember anyone acting like "poor-me-Sarah was my daughter when she was 13. How anyone over 14 can take her seriously is beyond me.

"President Palin"

Not only should you liberals get used to the sound of that, you should start coming to terms with the fact that the fault will be entirely YOURS!

1) By electing an arrogant, dimwitted, empty suit who does not understand what America is all about just because he's half black, you sowed the wind. Barry won't get any better over the next two years. America will despise him even more by 2012.

2) By viciously & cruelly ridiculing Sarah Palin and her family, you have only made her a hero to the millions of Middle Americans that the Bi-Coastal Ruling Class Elites have been viciously & cruelly oppressing for 40 years.

YOU made Sarah Palin. So deal with it.

Wow! Her decision to abandon the Governorship of Alaska was based on the fact she didn't make enough money. What a true public servant. The woman who once decried Barack Obama as a celebrity quits her job were she was getting Executive experience and decides to write books for millions, campaign for her type of GOP candidates, has a TV show about her, has made her daughter famous (mostly for being a schmuck) and gets paid millions by FOX News as an analyst. Who is the celebrity, Sarah? Anyone who can not see that this woman is an unintelligent, rider of the GOP gravy train deserves to have her elected as President. I am starting a pool on how long she will serve as President. My guess is 18 months, she will quit because it turns out you have to know a little something about the Constitution and the laws of our nation Personally, I think I could run my neighbors six year old against her and win. Unfortunately, my neighbors daughter has thirty years before she can run for President.

She was targeted by Republicans because she went after GOP crooks as well as the eternally crooked Democrats. The Democrats targeted her and filed one phony complaint after another not only because they are corrupt but on orders from Washington, D.C., where Obama and the other big-time crooks recognize the danger to them from an honest and patriotic American like Palin who has tremendous charisma and threatens their communist/fascist revolution.

But as the later comments (and the fact that Bristol is still on DWTS after better performers were voted off) show, her supporters are so identified with her that they prefer fiction to facts.

Comment boards such as these demonstrate the problem with this country. We have devolved precipitously into a society devoid of rational discourse and debate. Too many on the left and right are capable of nothing more than parrot head regurgitation. The media frenzy over Palin's VP nomination created an environment where it probably was hard for her to afford being gov. If your debt is mounting as a result of your job, what would you do? No, she is not presidential material, but she is not some despicable creature either. When similarly harsh comments are made about Obama (and to be clear, they have no place either), those making the comments are hate filled, racist right wingers. So, what does the evidence on a comment board like this make those making comments about Palin?

SARAH PALIN THE ILLUSIONIST
As one who has been in the political arena for quite some time, I am not surprised of the rising star of Sarah Palin. She has managed to take advantage of the mis-steps of the Republicans and the Democrats, particularly President Obama.

From her first appearance on the world stage with John McCain in 2008, we have been somewhat captivated or held hostage by the woman from Wasilla. Why? Because she has studied politics and the movers and shakers of politics all her adult life. Not ready for prime time you say? It all depends on TIMING, SHREWD COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS, ORGANIZATION, AND LUCK -- So far, all of these qualities are moving in Sarah Palin's favor.

Suggest you read this interesting article in the San Diego County News about Sarah Palin -- Good Reading. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT -- ESPECIALLY SARAH PALIN.

As an Alaskan, I am offended by Sarah Palin's remarks: "Here's the problem, she replied impatiently: I've got a long commute from my house to my office. I don't have the funds to pay for my family to travel with me, and the state won't pay for it, either. I can't afford to have security at my home -- anybody can come up to my door, and they do."

Prior to running for and being elected governor Sarah knew the capitol of Alaska is Juneau which is where the State legislature is housed, where the governor's mansion is located, and where there are excellent schools for her children to attend. There is no commute. Every governor prior to Sarah has moved his family to Juneau and the successor to Sarah has done likewise.

Sarah needs to face the fact that she is not astute enough to hold elected office. Mayor of a borough with approximately 1,000 residents does not provide one with the knowledge, experience, and skills to govern a state or a powerful world-leader nation.

I'm glad she resigned because she was an embarrassment to all women as the first woman governor of Alaska.

Some of these comments are hilarious: calling Mrs. Palin a whiner. Are you kidding me? Look who we have in the White House whining. Calling Palin someone who blames others: obummer constantly blaming Bush and others for his own shortcomings. Geeeeez. Sarah knew that the ongoing fictitious filing of ethics charges would break the state of AK and didn't want the state put in that position; operationally or financially. She had the courage to step away and all the Monday quarterbacks can do is look for the negative in that. I think it was a good thing to do for the state. And since I happen to live in AK I think I have a better idea of state politics than your outsiders who like to write about Alaska as if they know anything about us up here. Find a local non-biased person to do the stories and you might get more facts.

Her claims that ethics complaints cost AK millions: LIE. The total cost that was published 2 days before her resignation speech was $296,000. Accounting estimates showed that nearly 63% was her own fault by blatantly trying to obstruct Troopergate probe by filing complaint against herself with her handpicked Board.

http://www.adn.com/palin/story/850854.html

The claim that the state would not pay for her legal counsel is another lie. The state entered into a contract with Van Flein's (Palin's lawyer)firm to cover a portion of the costs; state never received in bills or invoices from firm. Palin felt it better to seek out private funding sources.

http://media.adn.com/smedia/2010/06/24/14/Palin%20report%202010-06.71097.source.prod_affiliate.7.pdf - see page 2 of 9; paragraphs 2-4

The claim that Obama or DNC behind complaints: NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER. Van Flein asserted this on Greta Van Susteren in July 2009 yet when pressed, could not offer ONE shred of evidence. Furthermore, a fair amount of complaints were from a REPUBLICAN, Andree McCleod. So, another LIE from Palin and her camp. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,530620,00.html

Even as governor, she was practically a no show governor.Even the much vaunted ethics reform she claimed as a key achievement was incomplete; supporters had to make a rewrite. In 2008, after she was absent from a special session she called, many legislators sported Where's Sarah? buttons. She only showed up in Juneau 15 percent of the time when she was governor.

She simply was a new face at a time of rising oil prices, allowing her to buy popularity. She capitalized on anti-incumbent sentiment against Frank Murkowski. However, when oil prices dipped and more came out about her admin's workings-private e-mail accounts, appointing high school friends to top jobs w/o qualifications, firing an aide because he dated the ex wife of her husband's former business partner and the Monnegan/Wooten matter, and her increasing absenteeism in early 2009 to raise her national profile and her popularity dipped. She knew more money to be made in lower 48 from speaking to her fawning worshippers than actually doing job she asked people to entrust her with. She is a low info sociopath; cheerfully dumb and uninterested in facts yet knows where the dollars and adoration are and they aren't in Juneau.

Pretty simple. And, the author is obviously a simpleton as are you based on this insane question: "On the other hand, why did Palin run if she couldn't afford to hold office?"

Ya know, there are clinics that will help you kick your crack habit...

With her 'Priscilla Presley' good looks, Sarah Palin is the fantasy wife of every red neck American male. She will certainly get their vote, but not too many others.

Weiner, you didn't know the difference between this area of law in Alaska & the rest of the states? REALLY?

ROFLMAO @ low IQ libs.

What in this story leads you to believe that the author didn't know the differences in state law? She's simply reporting the story. Frankly, I'm surprised that every state doesn't provide security to their office holders. Most states also shield their office holders from civil suits in order to protect them from frivolous challenges just based on political ideology.

On the other hand, why did Palin run if she couldn't afford to hold office? Her concerns about the commute and family travel should have been known before she ever ran.

She was smart, tho, to ignore the advice about building credibility before another run for office. She knows full well that the American voter isn't really swayed by competence and is mostly swayed by appearances and TV advertising.

I thought she sold off the governor's jet? Maybe she should have kept it if she wanted her family to travel with her.

people, aren't you paying attention?

the salary, benefits and perks seem to be the main reason many are running for Congress.

we are electing scads of 3rd tier people who can make, just in salary, 2 - 3 times what they could ever hope to make from a real job - given their intellect and education.

the country is paying the price. this has been going on for a while. it used to be "if you can't do, teach". now, it's "if you can't do, run for Congress (or other elective office)".

a big bunch of maggots - and we won't be well when they get through.

Yeah, poor poor Palin. She for some reason refuses to accept that she is a loser.
She saw the almighty dollar signs and the opportunity to take money out of stupid peoples pockets.

Why is she so special than any other Alaska Governor or any other US governor.
Oh thats' right. Blame it on everyone but your greedy old shameless self.
