Rep. Maxine Waters's trial delayed indefinitely

By Paul Kane

A day after recommending censure for Rep. Charles Rangel, the House ethics committee announced Friday that it was not ready to hold its trial of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), who was charged with inappropriately helping a bank in which her husband was a large shareholder.

In a vaguely worded statement, the committee announced that there were "materials discovered that may have had an effect" on the initial investigation and the charges filed against Waters. She has said she did nothing wrong in helping the nation's largest minority-owned bank get a meeting with Treasury officials during the financial meltdown of 2008.

The trial panel, formally known as an "adjudicatory subcommittee," has effectively sent the case back to the investigative subcommittee to reopen the probe, rather than going ahead with a trial that was slated to begin Nov. 29.

The ethics committee voted 9-1 Thursday to recommend the full House censure Rangel (D-N.Y.), a vote that is likely to happen the week of Nov. 29.

The committee dealt with the Rangel case and the punishment fits the crime in the context of punishments for other convicted House ethics violators over the past couple of decades.

In the Waters case it is just as likely that the "discovered documents" tend to exhonerate rather than condemn her. If that ends up being the case, the committee would just be saying "we are delaying the procedings to leave Ms Waters twisting in the wind."

And if you think this is a weak ethics process (most people do) wait until incoming Republican Speaker of the House Boehner is able to pursue his announced desire to de-fund or disbanding the ("Somewhat" independent) House Ethics Committee, and bringing the ethics process back under direct control of the House leadership.

I don't care what party or race, if they break our laws they should pay the price. Anybody who would defend these behavior, are a part of the problem, by not hold people accountable the will keep pushing the limits.

The dems cannot stand the light of day. They want no media glare into Maxine's sins and her arrogant responses to the cameras. Ms Water's perspective, is that she did nothing wrong and the present facts show something else.

Now, if Pelosi uses another trick to save Maxine's a**, then any, any Republican response will be labled by the MSM as "racist". I smell a stink brewing and its not Pelosi's botox infused skin smelling bad. Will the MSM investigate?

Maxine must stand trial and the vote must count now ...or in 2011! God bless America. Our Constitution means the rule of law. Shamed Dems like Rangel and Maxine only prove their culpability.

Why is anyone surprised???
The Dems and the Libs can't hold a trial for another Black crook, that would lead to screams of racism.
Not all congressional crooks are Black, cronyism reaches across all races. There just seems to be a recurring reaction that whenever a Black crook is exposed, it's because the accusers are racist!
But it is getting really old, really fast.
The mutt that held a nightstick at the polls, and Holder stopping any kind of action is a prime example. Don't prosecute blacks and minorities for civil rights violations, only go after whites when blacks cry about civil rights.
Maxine Waters is just another example of this racist protection that is repugnant.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has claimed for years that Mitch McConnell and Charlie Rangel were both corrupt as hell. In the meantime, McConnell continues to avoid a full-fledged investigation and is now Senate Minority Leader.

What, of what, is wrong with this picture?

This is totally absurd. Who does the House think it's working for a bunch of idiots?

That's probably not a good question to ask, seeing they are trying to pull a quick one and we're going to allow it to happen.

Isn't it great to have a Political Class to make these decisions for us.

will the charges go away with the new congress...
or will she be tried and her punishment given to her by a Republican held congress...
maybe it's time a Latino held that seat...

Is this going to be another Charlie Rangel funny trial? He is evidently getting, more or less, a slap on the wrist, although anybody else would have been thrown into the slammer, head first, no holds barred. Old Maxine may just get a rap on the knuckles and an admonishion to behave nicely from now on. I guess it pays off handsomely in the criminal realm to be a Democrat these days.

What a sham! The won't do anything to her. The corrupt Senate looks our for itself, since they are all committing crimes. They don't need a special set of rules. They should follow the Constitution

Do you expect Democrats to actually discipline their own? The Rangel affair was a joke. Maxine Waters needs to have criminal charges filed against her. Why isn't she being questioned at the federal level? Oh that's right the incompetent and racist Holer heads the DOJ. Well that at least explains why Walters gets a free pass.

to Taxpayers.

Good - does this mean that the Republicans will get to try her? Since she has been voted the most crooked legislator enough to have the trophy permanently retired with her name on it, maybe we will get justice under the Republicans. How do people like this ever get elected? Oh, I forgot - she bought it.

Is it time to vote in Libertarians and be done with the Democrats and Republicans?

We have over 7 million punitive laws on the books and have a lot of legislation to undo.

Posted by: RealTexan1 | November 19, 2010 2:51 PM | Report abuse

It doesn't matter. The wishy-washy way the Democrats dealt with Pelosi and made her the Democrat Darling again, then "scolded" Rangel there is no way they will do much of anything within the party.

Smoke and mirrors...
