Palin says Web site and credit card information came under cyberattack by WikiLeaks sympathizers

By Emi Kolawole

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin's personal information, including credit card information, were cyber attacked today by WikiLeaks supporters, according to an e-mail Palin sent to Jake Tapper of ABC News.

Hackers associated with the group "Operation Payback" -- an organization comprised of individuals who support WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange -- have reportedly tried to shut down the SarahPAC Web site and infiltrate Sarah and Todd Palin's personal credit card accounts.

"No wonder others are keeping silent about Assange's antics," Palin e-mailed Tapper. "This is what happens when you exercise the First Amendment and speak against his sick, un-American espionage efforts."

Palin has been critical of Assange on her Facebook page, calling Assange "an anti-American operative with blood on his hands." Palin goes on to ask, "Why was he not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders?" The post goes on to criticize the White House for not acting sooner to stop Assange from continuing to post classified documents.

This is not the first time Palin has been the victim of a cyberattack. A college student who hacked Sarah Palin's personal e-mail account and posted some of its contents on the Internet was found guilty in May and sentenced to a year in custody.

AMAZING! I've seen more posts on here than on any real articles. I stumbled upon this article to see exactly what happened. Quite funny how many of you liberals spend so much time on trying to bash Palin. Keep bashing you morons, she loves it and I love it. She's laughing all the way to the bank. I think she made 20 million last year off your hatred. She won't run for president, that I can promise you, but she likes to make you think she will......IT SELLS. I wouldn't want her to be President, but I do admire her and think she's awesome.......if even just to piss off the liberals.

Or there's the more likely option B where she refused to pay the hosting bill and they shut off the site. Or the even more likely option C where she's just lying about any 'cyberattack' in yet another attempt to play victim and garner sympathy. What an opportunistic cnnt.

Emi... I read your paragraph...

"This is not the first time Palin has been the victim of a cyberattack. A college student who hacked Sarah Palin's personal e-mail account and posted some of its contents on the Internet was found guilty in May and sentenced to a year in custody."
---------------
CYBERATTACK..? Get real. The student 'guessed a Yahoo Password answer that Palin herself gave the Answer to on the internet.. even posted in Wikipedia. To SOMEHOW associate Wikileaks and link it to that act is preposturous to associate the two as ' similar'.Don't write like someone who has a "Palin Journalism Degree". Raise the bar a LITTLE. You are grasping for straws there.Pitiful.

Palin is so rabid against Wikileaks that she will lie about her credit card being attacked. I would like to see some proof of this. By the way there has been no confirmation of any hacking going on.

For those of you who do not know, there is a difference between Hacking and doing DDOS attacks.

Hackers try to infiltrate a company's computer to gain information or to do damage while a DDOS attack simply denies entrance to a company's website. You don't need to be a hacker to do a DDOS attack. Heck, even a 5 year old can do a DDOS attack. And don't even get me started on what a LOIC is.

I don't know who the news services get for their Tech information but they are doing it wrong.

Posted by: BobJohnson1 | December 9, 2010 12:46 PM | Report abuse

It's hard to believe this is even true. She most likely forgot her password, alaska, and/or login name, ishootstuff, and blamed Wikileaks.

Loxinabox, let's face it, some people just seem controversial. Republicans have an irrational response when it comes to President Obama, and Democrats have a similar response towards Palin.

I like Palin because she's good to laugh at, and I would love to see her run for President on the GOP ticket, it would make a Democratic victory so much easier.

"Republicans have an irrational response when it comes to President Obama,"? first of all he is the President not the host a reality show...that kind of makes him "something" as to an irrational response from Republicans. Two nights ago Rachel Maddows on her show called him a "joke" she seemed upset at the way he caved like a "joke" and gave the Republicans every thing they wanted. Including extending unemployment benefits!

This is an interesting set of 1st Amendment topics. Assange seems to be protected by the 1st Amendment when he publishes information the way he does. And Palin is protected when she makes the comments she does. Both of them seem to be a little juvenile, but there's no law against lacking maturity.

Wait…didn’t she say the Obama should have prevented WikiLeaks intrusion into the US government emails and files? If Obama was responsible for that fiasco and she was ever so smart with her book being leaked, then how come she didn’t prevent the (alleged) attack against her?

If only we were enjoying the good times that are sure to follow the 2013 inaugeration of our first communications major President. She could send a strong signal to Wikileaks that free speech is only allowed for the right wing, and then in a fit of apocalyptic patriotic trembling, she could smash the red button and "literally" nuke the Wikileaks website into permanent refudiation.

I hope I will have built myself a refudiation shelter and have an auto alarm on my gagger counter by then, so that I will know when to take cover from a vast landscape blighted by refudiation fallout.

What a bright future, America, when millions of people see merit in following Palin's every word. Or is it meer entertainment while watching Rome burn?

The fact that these slimy hackers have broken the law and cyber-attacked an American citizen doesn't really matter to the morons who have responded here. Their attitude is: It's Palin; destroy her. Wonder how happy you would be if your peronal information was published by your new-found heroes. Your small minds would explode.

oh boy, what an idiot
1) this has nothing to do with 1st Amendment Rights, the 1st Amendment guarantees freedom from government interference with the press and individual rights of speech, it has NOTHING to do with people hacking into personal websites
2)it probably didn't happen, palin loves to be the center of attraction
3) didn't she get on the government for not protecting themselves against hackers? that she is better than that? well this is the second time her much smaller operation has been hacked. so there!

Buncha folks here forgot that Assange turned himself into part of an Espionage Ring and is now nothing more than an alien enemy combatant.

He and his little buddies face some serious problems including the possibility (which is more remote than we'd like) that the US military takes action to put him out of business permanently.

Don't you people know there's a war going on?

Don't you imagine that belligerent powers regularly kill their enemies?

What I want to know is why Palin doesn't go after the people who hacked her website herself. Obviously she is showing great weakness and her own dishonest character by not doing so...

And so it goes. I think a adequate response might suggest something about Palin not having the legal machinery or right to go after WikiLeaks or its supporters, that in fact it would nearly impossible for anyone to demonstrate they are responsible, etc.

So goes the difficulties in persuing Wikileaks and their supporters by the government. It turns out that its very hard to try a foreign national for distributing classified information, and that its not really against the law to do so even for an American citizen. Unless Palin is suggesting that the government hire a bunch of thugs to go beat them up, she is way out of line.

Dear Sarah,

there is, contrary to your current belief that America is the only country that actually matters, another world out there, who don't actually need to or are held to any sort of constitution - 'first amendment' is what you are quoted at saying.

and really, sarah, there is no reason to hold them to the same yardstick that you are pounding into whatever.

See, it doesn't matter what you, or other Americans seem to think.

You're just not that significant, in the overall scheme of things. So when you say "my first amendment rights", it's actually quite ludicrous to the remainder of the world that you should expect any sort of compliance whatsoever.

Ludicrous.

Get it?

There are places that are NOT the USA.

Like Russia, for instance, who you can actually see....but it apparently doesn't do you much good.

No, they're not Americans, either. Sorry.

Despite the drama-queen pronouncements of those on the right, there have been no deaths tied to Assange. Meanwhile, it's always sadly amusing to listen to right wingers who still think the Iraq invasion that resulted in over a million civilian deaths was a good idea, howling about people with supposed "blood on their hands".

And let's not even talk about Vietnam, where these sad denial artists are still not able to face the three million people we slaughtered from the air.

Apparently the only *real* blood flows in American veins. Just sad, sad, sad.

I would LOVE for Wikileaks to do a complete documents dump on $arah. Credit card spending, internal emails between her inner circle including with her pac, etc. All of it.

Then her followers would begin to understand what so many others do. She's NOT an "average" American.

In no way do I condone hacking into anyone's personal information or web site but, Sarah, the first amendment says the government will not interfere with free speech. The government. If someone else criticizes you, they're not interfering with you first amendment rights; only the government can do that. You spoke, the government stayed out of it, and someone else responded. I think they're jerks but that has nothing to do with your rights. And, what with you flirting with the presidency and all, I thought I’d point that out.

Posted by: digiphase | December 8, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Careful there po' Sarah, calling Assange un-American is kinda like calling your boss, Murdock un-American, since both those guys are Aussies.

And it shows, they both hate America and the American lifestyle. Both are trying their hardest to destroy that lifestyle, much harder than what you claim Obama is.

Sarah, you need a nap.

By a clumsy attempt to hush any opposition the immature WikiLeaks staff has provided Palin the best self-promotion opportunity in a long while. She must already be dramatizing her victimization.

Thanks WikiLeaks - for nothing.

Is Assange and WikiLeaks above the law and all who disagree must pay? Is that the message?

Of course you were cyberattacked, Sally dear, of course you were.

Someone is always attacking you. Those mean ol' evil doers and libur'ls.

Apparently you don't understand something about that tricky ol' First Amendment, darlin'. Freedom of speech usually comes with a price. The authors of that amendment and the founders of this great nation knew that. Freedom of speech often results in death.

Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines understand that too, sweetie. Jus' between you and me, I'm surprised you don't know that.

See ya, Sally! Try to avoid those mean ol' cyberattackers and keep your powder dry!

Ugh.... this lying, paranoid, quitting dimwit makes me sick.

In news of other insane teabagger leaders shown to be phony grifters...

Glenn Beck might, for once, be right: the government is coming for your gold. But only if you happened to buy it from one of Beck's advertisers, the Superior Gold Group.

At the request of prosecutors from LA County and Santa Monica city who have filed a civil suit against the company, Los Angeles County judge has ordered that Superior Gold be placed into receivership and all of its assets—bank accounts, real estate, and presumably gold stored for customers—frozen.

On Monday, a court-appointed lawyer actually physically seized control of the company, presumably to prevent further wrongdoing. The lawsuit alleged that among other things, Superior had defrauded its customers by overcharging them, fraudulently inducing them to buy overpriced collectors' coins rather than the bullion that they wanted, and taking customers' money for coins they never produced.

The prosecutors hope that the lawsuit will provide restitution for all of the company's ripped off customers.

Putting a company in receivership is a pretty drastic and very rare move for a judge in a civil case. It does not bode well for Beck's other and much bigger gold advertiser, Goldline, which has also been accused of very similar tactics.
....

That's it wingnuts, send your money to Goldine FAST!!

"This is what happens when you exercise the First Amendment and speak against his sick, un-American espionage efforts."

That explains why I get all those Nigerian scams and phishing attacks. Stupid me for speaking out from time to time.

What makes you so special Ms Palin? Who among us hasn't had their information "cyber attacked"? Was it successful?

Aside from the annoyance, you're too stupid for any group to bother with attacking. Except, of course, for the caribou. Please shut up and go away.

~~~
I would suppose so.
This is what happens when ignorant and crazy Conservative Extremist and the Gov't over step their bounds and don't keep their freakin' mouths shut, twitting all over the damn place, and writing snarky hostile lying comments on their Face book page and in sensitive and confidential gov't cables.
It's apparent that there are people running around in the world that will shut down your lying snarky mouth for you and an organization's web site, if you don't learn to shut up the snarky hostile lying rhetoric yourself.
First, how does Sarah know that it is Wikileaks supporters who are cyberattacking her(if anybody is, indeed, cyberattacking her)? Maybe it's PETA supporter4s.
Second, what does she mean "others are keeping silent" about Wikileaks? Huckabee, for example, has called for the assasination of Julian Assange. Christoper Hitchens has been outspoken about the harmful effects of Wikileaks. I could go on, listing those on both the left and right who have condemned Wikileaks's latest action.
Sarah, as usual, seems to have lost contact with reality.
Sarah Palin you are an idiot... You asks "Why was he not pursued with the same urgency we pursue al Qaeda and Taliban leaders?". Well Sarah, please tell us what laws you would apply that the US Government is not investigating? Also, speaking of the First Amendment, why don't you describe to us why this differs from the publication of the Pentagon Papers (have someone tell what they are) which the Courts upheld?
Sarah.........people are telling you to hush up and GO AWAY!!!!! When are you going to listen?
How does she know for fact, that Wikileaks folks did this to her?
Why was her credit card information so easy to get?
Why does any of the Palin family still have a Facebook page? All of them need to be shut down for rudeness, and multiple other 'rule violations'.
SP puts her lifestory on Facebook, and is still crying about people 'invading her privacy'? What a moron.
Talk about your 'lamestream media'.........Facebook is at the top of the 'lame' list.
