A trail of heated political rhetoric

By Scott Wilson and Emi Kolawole

Overheated political rhetoric is as much a staple of American democracy as Lincoln Day Dinners and rubber-chicken fund-raisers. But the 2010 election cycle, which unfolded as the nation faced a historic economic recession, reverberated with some particularly incendiary language, symbols and advertising. They are now being re-examined following the deadly mass shooting in Tucson that targeted Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) Here is a collection of some of the more inflammatory rhetoric over the last two years:

I think we need to decertify the Democrats and GOP. I also think states should remove party affiliation from voter rolls, as it serves no function. Why should states spend public money in a tight economy doing the work of the party headquarters?

Um, two Democrats saying "bad" things versus seven Republicans? Tell me, did you fellahs look quite as hard for liberal lipslips as you did for Republican rhetoric -- or did you just go to Media Matters for America?

Whether or not this particular tragedy was a direct result of the hate, bigotry, prejudice
and lies of from the likes of limbaugh, beck or palin, it does not take a genius to realize that some deranged individual would be persuaded to act on their words.
Prime example was the Murder of Dr Tiller!

The Sheriff had it 100% right!

This Jared Loughner nut (the shooter) was for the gold standard and against womens rights (abortion).

That's so far to the right that it's getting into Ayn Rand territory.

And the Southern Poverty Law Center said that the language control stuff that the guy was talking about is also something you'll find on the far right fringe.

Sorry Teabagger goons, the guy is not a lefty.

Nice try...

One would hope that there would be a few days given over to mourning for the dead and public good wishes for the full recovery of the injured in the aftermath of the Tucson shooting this morning. But since we live in a Twitter and Facebook and Instant Messaging world, such hope no longer gets a chance. Efforts to set the narrative are already fully under way within the extremist right.

The Right Wing Noise Machine (Faux News, AM Hate Radio etc) whose violent, eliminationist rhetoric has polluted the air waves and bled into other corporate mainsteam media outlets the past couple of decades, ramping itself up a little more each year, especially with the arrival of an African American in the White House, are, of course, denying that the shootings of a Congresswoman, a judge, a child and bystanders on a street corner in Arizona have anything to do with their savage words.

No surprise. One thing the Right Wing Lunatic Fringe is good at is refusing to accept any responsibility for the consequences of their murderous hate talk, whether it's Timothy McVeigh blowing up a federal building or Scott Roeder assassinating a doctor etc.

While the Journo-List Washington Post is not wasting a crisis other more legitimate news papers are doing the proper research and getting the story right.

The suspect appears not to be influenced by politics. Rather his mentally deranged mind twisted a harmless comment from Giffords into something else. Even the harshest political rhetoric can not penetrate the delusions of the disoriented mind. It is typically something less charged and otherwise nonsensical that sets them off.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703667904576071191163461466.html

From the Wall Street Journal:
"Mr. Loughner liked "contemplating the meaning of words and the origin of language," Mr. Montanaro said.

That interest might have triggered Mr. Loughner's first meeting with Ms. Giffords in 2007. Mr. Loughner said he asked the lawmaker, "How do you know words mean anything?" recalled Mr. Montanaro. He said Mr. Loughner was "aggravated" when Ms. Giffords, after pausing for a couple of seconds, "responded to him in Spanish and moved on with the meeting.""

Posted by: cprferry | January 10, 2011 12:49 PM | Report abuse

And the popular liberal blog called Giffords a "corrupt" "bad one" and a "bad apple" who "sold out the Constitution" to support imperialism and the elite. They specifically painted a bullseye on top of Giffords' district. Sure, those are words that would inspire a Marxist to act.

How a mentally deranged person, which the suspect appears to be, would react is not known and can not be rationally predicted or expected. The mentally disturbed are not stupid or merely misunderstand the context, they twist and twist words so far beyond their original meaning or any rational application.

While it's good sense to treat your political opponents with respect there's no certainty it would have better effect within a mentally deranged mind.

I find it unbelievable that the first person you cite is the President. This man has bent over backwards to be conciliatory and peaceful in both actions and words when has been attacked as a Nazi, a Communist, an illegal alien,a traitor and worse. You have some nerve to be so biased when in fact it has been almost entirely the Republican party that has advocated violence at all levels to achieve what they can't at the ballot box. The anti-government vitriol and pro-gun use imagery has been all from the right. The government has been accused of stealing its citizens rights and trampling the constitution under President Obama.

It is all these false accusation that can incite someone that is already troubled to violent action. They want to literally take the government down and back!

Who's flawed mind is it, that imagines that they will improve the tenor of political discourse by accusing their political opponents of sympathizing with a deranged killer who has committed unthinkable acts?

Perhaps each among us who have made this argument, should reconsider their own role in contributing to the hostile political discourse which they so despise.

With that it becomes increasingly obvious that so much of the Democratic agenda is formed by upon a scaffold of contradictions, where an ever expanding government increasingly embodies the very thing Democrats proport to hate. This while the mainstream media acts as their megaphone, amplifying this irrational message, without expanding a moments effort to validate its veracity, logicality or substance

I have to say I am dismayed by the lack of facts in the vast majority of responses to this event. Most responses seem to confirm what we know about most people and that is that we select ideas and information that reinforce what we already believe.

What we need are more people who are willing to sit down, read, study and carefully listen to many people with different ideas.....then spend considerable time thinking about what we have read and heard. Then and only then should we have the courage to speak out in a public forum. Courage in the absence of wisdom may prove to be mere foolishness.

Just take time to listen, think, then speak slowly and carefully listen to yourself. Would you believe and trust what you are hearing?

The author forgot to include the case of the GOP candidate for Governor in Idaho who suggested that we issued "Obama tags" in a discussion about hunting. While it is true that some on both sides have made inappropriate comments, it is also true that the comments from the right more often involve a call to violence against a specific individual or a suggestion that they will use firearms to get their way. I'm pretty sure that was not the intent of the 2nd amendment. Even the worst comments listed here from Obama or other Democrats are tame compared to the violence threatened by those on the right.

This is the view of someone who lives on the other side of the world. How did the land of the free and the home of the brave, the country that millions of people have emigrated to for a better life, degenerate into a undeclared civil war between the religious right and the loony left?
It appears to me that one section of your constitution should be amended to get with the times. Do you seriously believe that when the constitution was drawn up, they envisaged that "the right to bear arms" would include automatics weapons, instead of single shot rifles and pistols. I know the NRA's favourite saying of guns don't kill people, people kill people, but frighteningly easy access to guns certainly allows people to kill people more frequently.
As for the divisive health care debate, what the hell are you so scared of? In Australia we have had access to free health care for nearly 30 years AND subsidised pharmaceuticals and guess what -the sky didn't fall in, no one's grandma got euthanised, and people who can't afford private health insurance, get access to decent care!
Whether the staggering number of Americans who have never left the country realise it or not, what America does matters to the rest of the world.

Sharron Angle is too young and too dumb to know back in the time of Our Founding Fathers and Thomas Jefferson along with Little House on the prairie there were no cops around the corner of your house, people needed to protect themselves from people passing by with the need of wealth and supplies and they would kill to get them. Self protection was necessary. I live 3 minutes from a police department and I don’t keep any guns loaded, I keep a phone close by with a 911 number to call. Sharron Angle should not read the Bible; she would surely misinterpret it and spread false rumors, not to mention what she would screw up in politics.

It is typical of right wingers to jump on liberals with any excuse. There is obviously no reason to blame the tea party people for the actions of a lunatic, but tea party guys should not be surprised that many believe it was their inflammatory statements that lead to this tragedy. After this senseless act I would have expected right wingers to tone down their vitriol. But no, they are out there in full forces claiming liberals are gunning for them and using this tragedy to gain political advantage, spewing hate and being hypocrites, as everybody knows that Obama was the one that started calling them names. Is it possible to put a stop to this kind of nonsense? Can one express one's opinion without demonizing the adversary? Liberals are not free of this disease but by no stretch of the imagination can one find the same level ugliness from them as one gets from right wing nuts.

The people who are trying to take away basic American liberty such as the right to own firearms, the right to free speech instead of politically correct speech (defined by libs), and the right to decide what health coverage you buy or don't buy should expect to draw fiery comments from the people they are trying to dupe. Anyone who speaks out against them is using "hate speech" according to them. It is regrettable when a nut chooses to shoot a group of people (and this nut has liberal ways, atheist is one). The liberals have sowed the seed of hate by trying to enslave Americans to their theoretical utopia on earth, where they rule of course. You don't have to be too concerned about insurrection when a nut grabs a gun and acts stupid, but when Americans finally get completely sick of the lefties and grab their guns, then worry.

The hatred and diviseness that John McCain and Sarah Palin spewed across this country during the 2008 Pres election was chilling. To think that Palin is now hiding from the media and denying that she meant anything hurtful. John McCain is grandstanding and putting his face out there as usual when he, too, should be apologizing to this country. They both are so typical of the political climate in AZ.

Let's pray that the Tucson tragedy will serve as a wake-up call to Barack Obama to tone down his incendary rhetoric intended to gain political advantage by dividing the American electorate, one segment against the other. Obama must cease: "scapgoating" George Bush for every personal failure that he experiences in implementing his Leftist agenda; cease poor mouthing America as being the cause of every evil in the world; cease isolating: the Banking industry; Wall Street; the Rich; the Insurance industry; the Coal industry; America's Energy Sector; Industrial enterprises; and whatever other American segment serves as a convenient villain for justifying Obama's legislative initiatives. Cease, his incessant diatribes against those Americans who would dare to oppose his "redistributionist" policies. In addition, Obama must cease his perpetual playing of the "race-card" to curtail legitimate opposition to his Marxist policies; cease employing such inflammatory rhetoric as: "the cops acted stupidly - Republicans can come along for the ride; but, they'll have to ride in the back - bitter folks in small town America who cling to their religion - I don’t want to quell anger. I'm angry - the only place that I see them is at ribbon-cuttings - reminders that "We're watching you" - I want you to argue with them and get in their face - if they bring a knife, you bring a gun - you must punish your enemies - I need to know whose ass to kick - a Republican victory this November would mean hand-to-hand combat - etc." to incite his base.
Had Obama been appropriately vetted, one might have anticipated the nature of his immature, petulant conduct based upon his immersion in the conventional duties of his role as a Community Agitator; and, his tutorial under the extreme radical, Saul Alinksky, as well as his slavish adherence to his virtual Bible, "The Rules For Radicals".
In the interim, it is the pledge of those of us who comprise a center-right America to devote our energies to accomplishing our goals "OVERWHELMINGLY" thru the medium of the ballot box. However, we must avoid allowing the inflammatory rhetoric coming from Obama and his left-wing sycophants from distracting us from our November 2012 objective of restoring the governing principals of our Founding Fathers.

"In order for this nation to heal, we must elect politicians who represent the will of the people - not push their own agenda."

Unfortunately this is incorrect. "The will of the people" as it stands these days is motivated by anger and hatred (as exemplified by the trumped-up Tea Party). The people we have elected *are* representing the will of the people in all its bile and ignorance. We have been trained to vote for people who are like us, for better and mostly for worse. We think politicians are not representing the will of the people if they aren't representing *our* will. The right wing in particular has become increasingly prone to this over the past 30 years.

"Barack Obama has bitterly divided this country by time and time going against the will of the people."

This is also incorrect. The division of the country has been very cleverly and specifically arranged by the right wing, starting around 1980, for the purposes of ensuring that it retains control of the government and of society. You might have to be 50 or older to be able to recognize this for what it is. Many neoconservatives- especially through the right wing propaganda mouthpieces of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, etc.- have been working overtime to turn Americans against the government, and then disclaiming any responsibility when horrible things happen.

"But it is anyone's guess if this sad incident has anything to do with politics."

I think may turn out to be an unresolved issue. The descriptions of the shooter suggest that he has a mental illness that was present long before this horrible event. But it may be impossible to separate his mental illness from his politics.

I'm sure the kid's friend/schoolmate is a political expert. I was looking for the friend in this morning's talking head shows.

Only a conservative could twist this in a way to make it appear as if democrats are now shooting democrats because their majority is now a minority. Hey, we now have fewer democrats. Lets make it even less because I'm mad!

As storied as is the American history of heated political rhetoric is, there's a fairly big difference between some frontier pamphleteering, or soap box pontificating, or even barbed political cartooning, and 24 hour a day 7 day a week participation by all of society. There's also a difference between both the experienced and perceived world of that which is broadcast via electronic means and that which exists in books, or is spoken live.

True, all can be incendiary. All can incite. But we simply cannot, with any degree of intellectual and social honesty equate the different mediums, placing them all on equal footing solely on the basis of being hard-edged political speech.

Marshall McLuhan rightly observed that the "medium is the message." So much more lives and moves in the ethos of the world of electronica. So much more is conveyed and implied by the myriad cable, radio, blogging, TV, and social media All Stars, whether officially, or in our sub culture of our democratized media.

If we choose to minimize the role of incendiary political speech today due to a false equation with all time (whatever else it may have in common) we will miss the chance for an important national conversation, and one hopes, opportunity for a national act of maturation. I hope we will choose the right path.

The Tea Party and its allies in the media, including the Washington Post, have tried to claimed that everyone is to blame. But only the Tea Party is calling for a violent overthrow of the government.

Congresswoman Giffords is a centrist and a member of the so-called Blue Dog Coalition of Democrats who supported fiscally conservative, pro-business policies. She has pushed for more troops to guard the nearby US-Mexico border. She also refused to vote for Nancy Pelosi as House Democratic leader. Apparently, she is an opponent of the far left liberals.

Didn't someone make a movie about assassinating George W. Bush?

And we're supposed to all believe the crazies are only on the right?

It's sad that the left is using this tragedy to score political points.

It was the Democrats who got their butts handed to them this election cycle. As a group, the Republicans seemed pretty pleased with the results. Seems more logical that a Democrat would take out his frustrations.

We have a President who calls his political opponents "enemies".

In order for this nation to heal, we must elect politicians who represent the will of the people - not push their own agenda.

Barack Obama has bitterly divided this country by time and time going against the will of the people.

But it is anyone's guess if this sad incident has anything to do with politics.

Praying for the Congresswoman and the families of all the slain.

People are blaming the GOP for inciting people to do violence. True in many cases (Palin heckler in AZ, Miller handcuffs in AK, Paul people stomping a downed woman) but probably not this one. Any blame to conservatives should go to weak background checks, since it has become apparent this sick puppy was known by many to be off. Also a 33 round magazine in a glock lets 20 shots be fired in a short time. It took the death of an innocent 9 year old girl for Palin to scrub her Facebook page. Gifford's warning was not enough. I think any Tea Party speaker that now uses heated rhetoric will pay a price in public and all the media, conservative and progressive. FOXNEWS people were visibly upset fumbling for words reporting the event with only straight shooter Sheppard Smith calm, even and honest as always.

Posted by: kr1839 | January 9, 2011 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Politicians are supposed to be leaders and leaders lead what a country and person's deportment should be and one way to lead is by example.

When you start giving hate speeches and saying horrible things about people or even expressing anger and saying things like "hell no", sets a tone that is negative and destructive. Leaders lead not lower their standards for votes.

Rhetoric gives ammunition to senseless people or young impressionable vulernable people. A person having a few screws loose can only think, "gee I am ok listen to that guy" or "see I feel the same way so I am right."

When I was growing up my mother and father both cautioned me about my associations till I was old enough to make the judgement calls myself.

All those republicans need to shut up and speak like decent human beings and the same with democrats cause they don't need to follow them now that they lost the house--they had their chance. Then work for the better of the country and the people and stop using hate groups for votes. Make some laws to protect the people from these hate mongers because Sara Palin putting up peoples faces with crosshairs and says "don't retreat reload" and one of those people ends up dead its ok to do this? If that isn't saying to kill someone what is it saying? She had what 12 or 13 faces up there? One down. I just can't believe I get to the end of my life and have to see such nonsense as I have seen the past 10 years, Hate kept escalating because it could!!!

If ever there was a good reason to demand that we restore civility to our political discourse, and to tone down the absurd level of incendiary rhetoric spewing hate and anger across the airwaves, the horribly tragic loss of little Christine-Taylor Green is that reason. It matters not which side of the argument you support, inflammatory verbiage about "second-amendment remedies" and choosing to reload rather than retreat is bound to reach the ears of those seriously unhinged among us, whose quest to have their fifteen minutes of fame, or just to make their lonely lives count for something, might prompt them to an irrational act. We are poisoning our democracy, and we'd better rethink this tone we are setting, before it takes down a dark and destructive path.

Then there is this:

"My CongressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me!

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is dead to me now…..And why did she do this? Giffords never told me she was conservative Democrat."

The above is neither isolated nor unique.
Leftwing sites have been very harsh about Bluedog Conservative Democrats like THIS Congresswoman

The you have the quotes of President Obama:

"I want you to argue with them and get in their face!" Barack Obama, September 2008

“We’re gonna punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us.” Obama to Latinos, October 2010

“I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!” Obama on ACORN Mobs, March 2010

The Leader of the Left says: “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.” Barack Obama

As you read this the Democrat website the DAILYKOS is scrubbing....here is a captured screen shot:

Ms. Giffords was also among a group of Democratic House candidates featured on the Web site of Sarah Palin’s political action committee with cross hairs over their districts, a fact that disturbed Ms. Giffords at the time.

“We’re on Sarah Palin’s targeted list,” Ms. Giffords said last March. “But the thing is the way that she has it depicted has the cross hairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they’ve got to realize there’s consequences to that.”

"After that, during her re-election campaign, protesters gathered on most Saturdays on the same corner shouting and holding signs that said things like “Gabby, You’re Gone.”

“On a typical Saturday this corner is filled with Tea Party protesters,” said Brenda Tyler, who was with her husband, Lyndon. “I’ve seen signs saying things like ‘It’s time to reload’ and ‘One way or another, you’re gone.”‘ A real estate agency in the neighborhood had a sign out front that said “Goodbye Gabby” and showed the silhouette of a witch on a broom,” she said. It had been taken down on Saturday. "
