'Blood libel': Reaction to Sarah Palin

By Rachel Weiner

Sarah Palin's video message Wednesday morning, meant to combat accusations that she shared in the blame for the tragic shootings in Tucson last weekend, only sparked new outrage over her assertion that her critics were manufacturing a "blood libel" against her. (The phrase "blood libel" refers to age-old anti-Semitic falsehoods claiming Jews use the blood of Christian children for ritualistic purposes).

J Street, a liberal Jewish organization:

J Street is saddened by Governor Palin's use of the term "blood libel."
The country's attention is rightfully focused on the memorial service for the victims of Saturday's shooting. Our prayers continue to be with those who are still fighting to recover and the families of the victims. The last thing the country needs now is for the rhetoric in the wake of this tragedy to return to where it was before.
We hope that Governor Palin will recognize, when it is brought to her attention, that the term "blood libel" brings back painful echoes of a very dark time in our communal history when Jews were falsely accused of committing heinous deeds. When Governor Palin learns that many Jews are pained by and take offense at the use of the term, we are sure that she will choose to retract her comment, apologize and make a less inflammatory choice of words.

Jonah Goldberg, National Review:

I should have said this a few days ago, when my friend Glenn Reynolds introduced the term to this debate. But I think that the use of this particular term in this context isn't ideal. Historically, the term is almost invariably used to describe anti-Semitic myths about how Jews use blood -- usually from children -- in their rituals. I agree entirely with Glenn's, and now Palin's, larger point. But I'm not sure either of them intended to redefine the phrase, or that they should have.

Assistant House Minority Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.)

She is an attractive person, she is articulate, but i think intellectually she seems not to understand what is going on here.

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz:

The term "blood libel" has taken on a broad metaphorical meaning in public discourse. Although its historical origins were in theologically based false accusations against the Jews and the Jewish People, its current usage is far broader. I myself have used it to describe false accusations against the State of Israel by the Goldstone Report. There is nothing improper and certainly nothing anti-Semitic in Sarah Palin using the term to characterize what she reasonably believes are false accusations that her words or images may have caused a mentally disturbed individual to kill and maim. The fact that two of the victims are Jewish is utterly irrelevant to the propriety of using this widely used term.

Simon Greer, president of Jewish Funds for Justice:

Sarah Palin did not shoot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Only the perpetrator can be found guilty for this act of terrorism. But it is worth pointing out that it was Rep. Giffords herself who first objected to Ms. Palin's map showing her district in the crosshairs. "We're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, the way she has it depicted, it has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that they have to realize that there are consequences to that action." According to Ms. Palin's logic, Rep. Giffords' statement was a blood libel against the Fox News host. The fact that Rep. Giffords is Jewish and Ms. Palin is Christian makes the accusation even more grotesque.

Noam Neusner, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush and the son of a famed Talmudic scholar.

I would have advised against using it -- the term is historically unique and refers specifically to false charges of ritual murder. While Ms. Palin has a legitimate gripe against her liberal critics, who were wrong to associate the Tucson shooter with her politics, she is using a term that simply does not apply. She could have simply used the word 'libel' and she would have been fine.

The Anti-Defamation League:

It is unfortunate that the tragedy in Tucson continues to stimulate a political blame game. Rather than step back and reflect on the lessons to be learned from this tragedy, both parties have reverted to political partisanship and finger-pointing at a time when the American people are looking for leadership, not more vitriol. In response to this tragedy we need to rise above partisanship, incivility, heated rhetoric, and the business-as-usual approaches that are corroding our political system and tainting the atmosphere in Washington and across the country.
It was inappropriate at the outset to blame Sarah Palin and others for causing this tragedy or for being an accessory to murder. Palin has every right to defend herself against these kinds of attacks, and we agree with her that the best tradition in America is one of finding common ground despite our differences.
Still, we wish that Palin had not invoked the phrase "blood-libel" in reference to the actions of journalists and pundits in placing blame for the shooting in Tucson on others. While the term "blood-libel" has become part of the English parlance to refer to someone being falsely accused, we wish that Palin had used another phrase, instead of one so fraught with pain in Jewish history.

Conservative pundit Glenn Reynolds, who used the phrase in a WSJ o-ed:

...I don't necessarily know that Palin picked up the phrase from me -- I think a lot of people in the blogosphere were using that description. I didn't see it, but I got email saying that on Morning Joe somebody was complaining about her use of that term this morning. I am of course aware -- and I imagine the very pro-Israel Palin is, too -- of *The* Blood Libel from medieval times, but one sees false associations with murder called *a* blood libel without reference to that. I seem to recall Tony Blankley calling the Haditha allegations (by John Murtha?) a blood libel against American troops, for example.

Hank Sheinkopf, Democratic consultant:

The blood libel is something anti-Semites have historically used in Europe as an excuse to murder Jews -- the comparison is stupid. Jews and rational people will find it objectionable. This will forever link her to the events in Tucson. It deepens the hole she's already dug for herself. ... It's absolutely inappropriate.

David A. Harris President and CEO, National Jewish Democratic Council :

Instead of dialing down the rhetoric at this difficult moment, Sarah Palin chose to accuse others trying to sort out the meaning of this tragedy of somehow engaging in a "blood libel" against her and others. This is of course a particularly heinous term for American Jews, given that the repeated fiction of blood libels are directly responsible for the murder of so many Jews across centuries -- and given that blood libels are so directly intertwined with deeply ingrained anti-Semitism around the globe, even today.

Former Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleischer:

I liked much of what she said, but it would have been even better if she simply rose above the accusations about her map and focused entirely on the bigger message of loss, tragedy and the greatness of our country and the strength of our people.

Howard Kurtz, The Daily Beast:

Had Palin scoured a thesaurus, she could not have come up with a more inflammatory phrase. ... I would say that sounds like the response of someone who wants to stoke her base and further her lucrative career as a culture warrior--not someone who is plotting to run for president.

Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic:

Sarah Palin is such an important political and cultural figure that her use of the term "blood libel" should introduce this very important historical phenomenon to a wide audience, and the ensuing discussion -- about how Fox News is not actually Mendel Beilis -- will serve to enlighten and inform. It is a moral necessity, I think, for Christians to understand the blood libel (Muslims, too -- see the Damascus Blood Libel of 1840), not only because it is part of their history, but because the blood libel still has modern ramifications -- Israel, after all, was founded as a reaction to Christian hatred, of which the blood libel was an obvious and murderous manifestation.

I think it's sort of interesting when I read posts from those of you who defend Palin again and again in spite of her amazing ignorance. "It's not that big of a deal," you say. These are "trumped up" accusations.

If Sarah Palin was guilty of such base stupidity once or twice, okay. But nearly every time this moronic woman opens her mouth, she manages to show how stupid she is.

She trips over the English language on a regular basis.
She makes up words.
She has no sense of basic geography.
She is unaware of the names of certain world leaders.
And she delivers speeches that contain words and phrases that she clearly doesn't know the meaning of.

But hey, let's put her in the White House. After all, we managed to put up with Bush for eight years. Why not throw another moron in the ring?

After all she's said and done, I didn't think it was possible, but Sarah Palin has sunk to a new low. She chooses the very day that the victims of this tragic event are being honored in a memorial service to come out with a devisive rant that is mainly about how poor Sarah is the victim. No Sarah, you're not the victim. The victims are lying in hospital beds and coffins in Tucson,Arizona.

How can you be so disrespectful and callous to the victims and their families.
This was suppose to be entirely their day, not yours. This was definitely not the time for you to try to grab the spot light.
My God, why couldn't you have picked another day? There seems to be no limit to your ignorance and insensitivity. Have you no decency? Have you no shame? The answer is apparently no.

For all the people who purport that Palin has done no wrong, i would say: her hands are probably clean this time-we will never know unless this f$&k starts talking. Maybe his hot shot lawyer will make him issue a full confession in return for sparing him the needle...fine, her hands are clean this time, but I ask you, how would you like it if someone put a target on your back and talked about gun play? That just seems like something even plain herself would object to if it were done to her.

Using the term blood libel just proves she does not have the historical perspective to lead a kindergarten class. Perhaps if she had just used libel or slander, it would be close to accurate, but even then, she would have to prove that the allegations are untrue, which she cannot-no more than anyone on the left can prove she was involved with this sick man's fantasies. It is true however, that she did place a gun sight on this person's district and then personally came to tucson and repeated the don't retreat-reload metaphor. That is a fact, and in retrospect, she should show some remorse for what turned out to be a very bad metaphor.

I have listened over and over to Dupnick's comments, and he never named anyone or any party. He said some radio hosts and tv personalities spread hate and vitriol. If plain and beck found this to be a description of themselves, then i think that is their own conscience speaking more than anything else.

This conversation about the right's gun and revolutionary fantasies has been going on long before this terrible event occurred. If sarah wanted to help our country, she should have shown up at the ceremony tonight and shaken hands with president Obama. if she wanted to show leadership, she could have waited a few more days to release this statement. Wasn't the silence from her the past few days so nice?!

No matter how you package or disguise manure, in the end, it is STILL nothing more than manure. No matter how much Sarah Palin's handlers, policy wonks, and speechwriters try to package her or disguise her shortcomings, she is still nothing more than an ignorant, moose-hunting, imbecilic, perverted conservative piece of excrement.

Not everything can be attributed to politics.
We are ignoring issues that need attention by blaming politics for everything. Left wing, right wing arguments do NOT solve problems: problems in society of mental illness, pedophilia, predatory behaviors, just plain bad/missing parenting. We need to STOP thinking "politics" and START thinking ISSUES--issues that need solving.

Perfect speech by Palin.

And a little sound bite to get all the whining computer geeks busy and focused. I almost want to cry over the tragedy felt by many that Sarah Palin used again the WORDs. Soon no one will be allowed to say anything that might displease some special interest groups who use every possibility to get into spotlight with Sarah's name as a ladder. But then, how would they support their cause. That would be nice, right? Be glad ( as You really are) that Sarah said what she said. Vanity Fair.

Knowing the reaction will be predictable, better ask why Palin used ,as it appears, politincorrect word. I am absolutely sure she knew the reaction and all this whining vanity (like of those who eat chicken but can not kill a moose) will again increase the numbers of her supporters.

She threw the bite, so many got caught.Wise move, Sarah. Very refreshing to hear voice of normalcy in the society corrupted by people earning money on pretending to be victimized by virtually everything.

The huge up-side for conservatives is that Americans can clearly see the bias, dishonesty and hatred displayed by the loony left toward anyone not in lock step with the loony left's warped vision for the country.

It makes 2012 such an easy win for conservatives across the country.

Honestly the lame stream media is completely irrelevant due to its collective pathological dishonesty. I can't wait for election time! :

What did it take in the past week for some to realize that this woman is nothing but a self serving, narcissistic woman? Was it her scrambling to release on the first day of the shooting tragedy to extend her condolences to a woman she targeted with a rifle scope on a map of the United States? Was it her 8 minute commuique from her undisclosed, location replete with a cozy fire and a flag where she whined about HERSELF and her right wing buddies of victimhood? There are six dead and thirteen injured, among the injured of course is Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Sarah Palin, who should have remained silent, for at least a moment in time, could not help herself. She is a narcissist. Most of us are telling you to sthu. This is not about YOU -- get it?

Once again we have the lame stream/left wing media trying to sell a lie, trying to tie a left wing loon murderer to conservatives. Clearly this is yet another example of a corrupt lame stream/left wing media. On the plus side most Americans know it and now get their news elsewhere.

What's sad are the drones who follow the left wing party line, those few poor misguided lemmings who post here trying to prop up the loony lefts positions. In this case trying to tie a left wing-nut killer to conservatives. It's really pathetic... I honestly question the sanity of anyone who would, having access to the real facts, still blather on trying to prop up lies and spread miss-information.

How do these people even look themselves in the mirror in the morning?

She holds no official position, wields no official power, and clearly (thank God) holds no official responsibilities. She has no more credibility than any other flash-in-the-pan celebrity, such as Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. In fact, she feeds on the attention the media give her. When some "learned" people refer to the intellectually dysfunctional Palin's use of the term "blood libel" as anti-Semitic, they add to the confusion about the Semitic people. According to all dictionaries, the vast majority of the Semitic people are the Arabs! Also the Hebrews are Semitic, but they constitute no more than 5% of the Semitic people!

Since the shooter came from the left, shouldn't the question be asked if the shooter got his motivation from the liberal media? MSNBC outdoes FoxNews on preaching hate night after night. How come the liberal media just glosses over the hate on the left and only focuses on the hate on the right? This seems so politically dishonest, since the shooter seemed to shoot the congresswoman for not being liberal enough.

Let's see...using Palin's logic, and the assertion that anything goes in political discussion, no harm meant, could we equate her charge that Obama was "pallin' around with terrorists" and her "death panel" and her "don't retreat, reload" and her map with gunsights on various districts (oops, I meant to say surveyors marks) as examples, and simply say that those who are criticizing her now are just engaging in political discourse that is the equivalent of what she uses. OK for her to make accusations and assertions that are unfounded, I guess, but not OK if someone who doesn't agree with her does the same (in her mind, at least). There may and probably will never be a direct link between vitriolic and hate language and the murders in Tucson. On the other hand, I would like for someone to point out to me how such vitriolic, violent and hate language furthers democratic principles. And that's democratic with a small d, not referring to the party, just to be clear. Maybe she should review the tape of Rep. Giffords talking as one who was in those gunsights.

OMG! The loony left just doesn't know when to crawl away with it's collective tail between it's legs!

Let me reference a post made earlier today by “dahni” in response to another journo-list spouting the same line of garbage as we hear yet AGAIN in this demented left wing skreed. He wrote:
Obama: “They Bring a Knife…We Bring a Gun”
Obama to His Followers: “Get in Their Faces!”
Obama on ACORN Mobs: “I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”
Obama to His Mercenary Army: “Hit Back Twice As Hard”
Obama on the private sector: “We talk to these folks… so I know whose a&s to kick.“
Obama to voters: Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat”
Obama to lib supporters: “It’s time to Fight for it.”
Obama to Latino supporters: “Punish your enemies.”
Obama to democrats: “I’m itching for a fight.”.

Honestly what more really needs to be said, I mean really... It was widely reported today and also yesterday that the shooter took NO guidance from Sarah Palin or any other conservative. He had been threatening this woman for years. He's also considered a left wing-nut by former friends, but here is the loony left still persecuting Palin and conservatives.

Sadly you can bring as many facts to a progressive liberal as you want, but it still won’t make them see or admit the truth. That’s why their ideas are being rejected wholesale by the American people.

More and more independents and even democrats are joining with conservatives now because they see that progressive liberalism is more of a disease than anything else. I can’t wait for 2012 when we can vote the rest of them out of office and clear our government of the progressive liberal disease.

The right-wingers in this country have been so offensive, so anti-social, so anti-American since Ronald Reagan began his 1980 campaign.

With "leadership" like Sarah P, Newt G, and Boehner-McConnell twins the righties have dragged this country down so far it is no longer recognizable as the shining light of the free world. Now we are the bullies on the block infamous for our torture program as foreign policy and right-wing government programs to line the pockets of the filthy rich.

Right-wing societies always fail because of the misery imposed on the average citizen. Now it IS time that REAL Americans took our society back from right-wing regressive anarchists before our slide into the abyss is irreversible.

Guantanamo is still there. We can put all those America-hating righties down there and use the justice system they put in place for the trials. The charge is sabotage, willful destruction and treason.

I would still have remained Republican if they would stop using the hallowed name of our Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, to justify their hatred of the poor, the weak, the sinners. Please note that the base and foundation of Christ's teachings is to LOVE and not to hate. However, this party stresses anger and hatred.

I do not know if you are now a Republican or a Christian but I sure hope you are not a Christian as your tone and your words show what an angry person you are, boiling with hatred towards the poor and the destitute. If you are a Christian, I hope you will pray and be moved by the Holy Spirit instead of by false prophets who use the name of our Lord Jesus in vain.

I have nothing against Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck but I am extremely saddened each time they interject their speeches encouraging anger and hatred towards the poor or destitute with the name of God.

A person on the extreme left kills another liberal for not being liberal enough. You would think the media would look at the hate speech of MSNBC, since MSNBC is close to the political views of the shooter. But no, the Liberal media blames Palin for the shooting. Palin rightly defends herself from the Liberal media, the Liberal media, instead of saying sorry, throws more dirt at her. No wonder the public turned on what the liberal media is saying and voted out the Democrats, the Liberal media has no respect anymore.

I think it is about time to democrats start picking up arms and hitting the Sarah Palin sympathizers and any member of the tea bag party. A good for-instance of this, is the idiot "former democrat" that wrote the latest diatribe below.

These people are members of the latest "know-nothing" party, and they are detrimental to the existence of the United States.

Sarah Stalin (oh I mean Palin) has violated the Tranquility of the United States, and risked the "promotion of the general welfare" of the American public. She shall be prosecuted for using speech that incites imminent lawless action , and tried for crimes against the American public. When prosecuted, I will gladly submit myself for further lawless actions for the claims I have made in this statement.

Comon' democrats, stop acting like little kids, and sound off like you got a pair. Put this dumb bi**h in her place like the idiot she is. Then do the same to her followers.

You know the thing that gets me?

Every little provocative statement that Palin utters instantly turns into the top headline of the moment. Isn't this exactly what she is looking to achieve? Instead of endlessly debating her controversial-statement-of-the-day, why not just ignore her? When is it going to get old?

It's not like she ever adds anything positive to the debates that she comments on, but rather just says whatever she and her team thinks will get her the most media coverage. Why does the media still take this headline-grabbing seriously?

Maybe she hasn't stuck her foot in her mouth badly enough yet. I know she's attractive and has a kind of yokel charm about her, but seriously....

As for the term blood libel, I had not heard it before, and I wondered exactly what she was trying to to achieve by using such a phrase. Apparently she didn't know what it meant either; probably she heard it and thought it "sounded good" or perhaps she just reads what is put in front of her. Is anyone really that surprised that Sarah Palin used a term and didn't know/understand the historic significance of what she said? I mean seriously, how many times has she misspoke. She said she was capable of handling international relations b/c she could see Russia from Alaska.

She has strong convictions, is not terribly bright, and has become a master of saying ridiculous comments. I'm surprised she's still politically influential, but there are obviously many people who are on her same wavelength unfortunately.

Just let her keep talking. Even her supporters may realize this woman isn't qualified to run a hotdog cart. She won't run for President anyway. It would cut into her income.

The Democratic Party is the most disgusting entity in American politics history. It's attempt to blame Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, and anyone on the right is a despicable example of the pure fantasy Democrats live in. Democrats need to look long and hard at themselves, their history, and what their party stands for.

Democratic Party history:

1. The Democratic Party was against freeing the slaves.
2. The Democratic Party was for secession.
3. The Democratic Party started the Civil War in order to keep African Americans enslaved.
4. The Democratic Party resisted reconstruction and equal rights after the Civil War.
5. The Democratic Party created the "Jim Crow laws" in the south when they regained control from Republicans.
6. The Democratic Party was responsible for Segregation policies in the south.
7. The military was INTEGRATED until Democrat President Woodrow Wilson SEGREGATED it.
8. The KKK for a hundred years was considered the "military arm" of the Democratic Party.
9. Democrats fought Republicans tooth and nail in order to STOP the Civil Rights movement.
10. Only when North Eastern Democrats defected and supported the Republican Civil Rights efforts did the 1960’s produce the laws now considered the centerpiece of the Civil Rights movement.
11. The Democratic Party evolved in the 1960's into a hybrid Socialist Party and its socialist policy’s seek to re-enslave African Americans under the guise of protecting them from racist policy’s that Democrats themselves instituted.
12. And now the fruit of the socialization of Democratic Party ideology and its utter failure is shown in an African American community almost completely dependent on the government for even the most basic of needs (subsidized food, housing, etc. etc.) and the removal of the African American man as the bread winner of those families.

As usual, the useful idiot Mrs. Todd Palin has no idea what she's talking about. A classic Republican.

Sarah is learning just like Prez Obama should have been. She will be a much better prepared president in 2014.

Since Sarah is fond of quoting other famous Americans, here's one especially for her.
"Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt." Abraham Lincoln.

Sarah Palin is the poster child for all image, no content. She seems to be stuck at age 5, totally self-involved, doing whatever she wants with no sense of accountability for her actions whatsoever.

C'mon now, you cannot blame Sarah Palin for the term. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to know that she did not select the phrase. Somebody wrote it for her and with her not being the brightest bulb out there, thought, "cool".

Palin and Beck and the rest don't get it. Whether it is of the vast left wing conspiracy or the media, they just love being the victim, and that is the height of hypocrisy. The hard truth is this: Palin has decided that as part of her political persona, she is going to use extreme, aggressive, in your face, and threatening language and imagery to dehumanize and marginalize her opponents. Fine, that’s her right. But now, when people respond in kind because of a senseless and tragic event that more or less mirrors the imagery and language she uses, she is the victim? Please. She is incapable of bearing responsibility or showing humility. Had she said, "In light of what happened in Tucson we regret our use of unfortunate images and language in the election, and never intended for it to be construed as wanting to cause harm to anyone. We are shocked that this sick individual did this and will work to do whatever it takes to make sure these sorts of tragedies never occur again" she would probably deflect much of this. But no, Sarah nor the right can never admit to being wrong, or mistaken, or in error, not when there is an opportunity to cast themselves as the victim. If you need to be reminded just how dangerous and extreme the noise from the right and Palin's beloved Tea Party has been, take a look here - http://wp.me/pNmlT-AK

i guess democrats aren't the only ones who don't want to let another crisis go to waste.

she had the chance to rise above the fray, and this is how she chooses to respond? James Clyburn & Ari Fleischer were both spot on.
