Michele Bachmann to deliver her own State of the Union rebuttal

By Rachel Weiner

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) is delivering the official rebuttal to President Obama's State of the Union next week. But, thanks to technology and the tea party movement, it won't be the only Republican response. In concert with Tea Party Express, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is delivering her own post-speech message.

Ryan's response will air on national television after Obama's speech; Bachmann's will be streamed on the Tea Party Express Web site. The news was announced in a fund-raising email. Bachmann founded a Tea Party Caucus in Congress, and Tea Party Express named her a "hero" in the 2010 election.

Founded by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Tea Party Express is more closely aligned with the Republican establishment than some other conservative activist organizations.

As the Fix reported a few weeks ago, Bachmann has been weighing a presidential bid.

It's hard to see where Bachmann sees herself fitting into the GOP presidential field -- particularly if Sarah Palin runs. Bachmann and Palin inhabit largely the same political space -- female, unapologetic conservative, tea party favorite -- but Palin carries with her a much higher profile and would be hard to usurp for those voters.

Bachmann also campaigned for -- but failed to obtain -- a leadership spot in the 112th Congress.

Can we please stop referring to the Tea Party as if it is a real political party. The Tea Party is not a real political party. If the TP Republicans want to be recognized as a real political party then the TP Republicans need to do the work and put out the effort and register as a separate party.

I am sick of the media treating the movement that is really the product of a RW think tank as a real political party.

For a group of people that talk about personal responsibility these TP Republicans sure have not taken on the personally responsible to become a real political party as this the phony party continues to suck at the GOPs tit while playing at being independents.

I really would like to say something charitable about Michelle Bachmann. However, this nut case has visions of grandeur. She is dilusional. I hear her speak and my flesh crawls. I understand that her son would like to yank her off the public stage. If she were my mom, I would be embarrassed beyond measure.

Two things America does not need are: (i) a president who is filled with delusions of grandeur and (ii) one who uses slogans as a substitute for policies.

Obama will use the State of the Union which is supposed to be only the citizens look at how the government is using their tax funds, and how the state of the country is in as a whole, as his campaign platform to talk about what all HE has done since he has been President, he is very good at sliding in these things into any address or speech he makes, so I don't see much coming out of his "State of the Union"

President Obama will use the State of the Union the same way all other President's have done. I wonder though why you have a problem with the President telling the American people what he has accomplished over the past year? Do you think if the American people are aware, people like you would have to give him credit for moving our country forward? What are you afraid of?

Regardless of what you think of Bachmann, she got somehow elected. While looking at the depth of her ignorance makes my skin crawl, the only way to unseat her is to "focus" an effort in Minnesota to make these her and her elk GO AWAY. Make her DEBATE. Make her go on the record. You don't have to call her names. You just have to let her keep talking and recruit a better looking woman with some reasonable ability to do some critical reasoning. One way to start taking the power out of her hands is to insist that she not be covered by the media everytime she farts some half truth, which of course is the strategy of the Republican Party. Start spreading any BS you can, regardless of the truth. I mean really what's the worse that can happen anyway...you won't be liked? You won't get re-elected? Seemed to have worked BIG TIME for the Re-thugs. To bad the Dems have too much intellect and integrity to do the same.

Are you new to these boards? It is always so interesting to read comments like this from the right . Read the post on the various blogs and you will see that for the past two years this is the type of comments the right has posted about President Obama, Michelle Obama and they have even commented about the children as well. Interesting how the right can freely whine and complain about things those on the left post as if they aren't the reasons for the comments. You people can dish it out but then come on the boards whining when someone calls you on it or critize you.

43 is the record holder for presidential vacations.

43 also holds the record for most devastating United States recession not called a depression, but we aren't through with it.

43 also ran up more national debt than any two other presidents. The closest two who come close are his daddy and the nightmare known as Reagan.

43 also managed to leave behind a failing banking system, a broken international reputation and a collapsing research and education system incapable of being competitive for a t least another decade.

Did I fail to mention 43's two unfinished wars? Not one but two.

So, if you want to blame any one man for the condition of our country today you need to start with the president who was in office when all this happened, not the man tasked with the thankless job of trying to clean it up while hoards of rabid right-wingers do everything they can to make sure no one can clean it up.

If I were to have one wish granted it would be to have all the idiot right-wingers who were part of destroying our nation to sit in a corner somewhere and shut the hell up while the rest of fix it. 30 years of right-wing obstruction, destruction and outright lies is more than enough for any civilization nation, which we are not under right-wing rule.

Are you better off than you were two years ago? The nine percent unemployed probably are not.

If you are better off now than in 2008, then Obama is your guy.

If not, vote him out in 2012.

The economy still is in the dumps. Obama better get working instead of taking vacations and having big diners. Does this guy ever sit at his desk for eight hours and just plain work?
*****************************************

Well, let's put it this way....what was done in 2007 and 2008 was under George's watch. I lost my job in August of '08, and I've had small jobs here and there. However, within the past two months, I have seen a job trend upwards. People are now hiring again, perhaps a little slowly, but we are making a turn.

As for Michele Bachmann? One person said she'd had 2 weeks experience as a Congresswoman. She's been in office since 2007 (elected 2006.) So, her term is up in 2012, which is why you're going to be seeing a lot more of her, unless you extend an "ignore Sarah Palin" -type pledge to Michele Bachmann.

Can we at least criticize Palin and Bachman without using sexist adjectives and metaphors? Don't worry, there's plenty left to critize.

The Constitution requires the President to provide Congress an annual report on the state of the Union. It does not even require it to be read in person. Indeed, for many years, it was simply written and delivered to a clerk. It certainly is not an occasion for a debate and there is no corresponding Constitutional requirement for any assessment or 'rebuttal' of his report. Such political events are simply unsolicited attempts at self-aggrandizement. It is the height of arrogant presumption for Bachman, with 2 weeks experience as a Congresswoman, to presume to know enough about the current state of affairs to put herself on the same level as the President...any President. It's not a news event warranting coverage.

Bachmann was a tax collector acting as a attorney in George H Bush's IRS. I don't remember Jesus collecting taxes for Rome during his career.

She received a quarter million federal dollars in dairy and corn subsidies for a farm they had ownership in. I don't remember Jesus seeking handouts from Rome.

She admits switching from being a democrat to being a republican after reading a Gore Vidal novel. I don't remember Jesus switching his philosophies to easily.

She believes government should have power over the body of a woman as shown in her work to outlaw abortion rights while arguing that health care reform is bad because it gives the government power over your body. I don't remember Jesus being hypocritical.

She believes teenagers who get jobs should pay the employer for the privilege. I don't remember Jesus asking people to work for free.

She acknowledges not being a scientist and being uneducated in the areas of science, then acting on that ignorance denounces evolution as having no evidence. I don't remember Jesus telling people things he himself did not know anything about.

Bachmann has more in common with an ignorant Roman legislator than Jesus.

Somehow it seems to me that Bachman's kind of aggressive extremism is no longer so interesting or relevant. Her moment has passed and this may be her chance to prove it. I am hoping the GOP will regain some of its former dignity. Even if I continue to disagree with them.

Why is the State of the Union becoming debate night?! They are degrading this historical ritual that happens every year. This has been going on for some time and frankly most people don't even watch the responses. And now we are going to have TWO responses!!! It's pretty funny that Michelle (McCarthy) Bachmann is going to be the speaker. I guess they don't have any control over her -- she's a loose cannon.

Posted by: sharronkm | January 22, 2011 12:35 AM | Report abuse

Maybe with a planned rebuttal is needed. 1. It provides a definite forum that may provide an alternative to challenging "facts" in the SOTU Address so that it isn't interrupted while in progress and promote a degree of civility during the address. That could be a plus from last year.
2. The GOP has not fully appreciated how it is that it now has a significant majority in the House.
With her rebuttal being a scheduled event, you have the option to be elsewhere or avoid watching the telecast.
3. Maybe a 3rd rebuttal is in order, like Howard Dean or someone who can represent those that think President Obama is moving away from some promises such that the left-wing feels somewhat betrayed. It that person has the decency to preannounce the event, those that might gripe about it could tune out too.

The usual procedure is for the networks to carry the President's Address and then the opposition party's response. I doubt that they will give time to Bachmann. They will want to get back to their usual paid programming. If the cable news services carry her speech, you just know that at least Fox will, she will be moving to squeeze out Half-Governor Palin for time on the airways. When all is said and done, Bachmann will be another flast in the pan, like Palin.

You have got to be kidding me, this woman is going to give her own rebuttal outside what the Republican statement will be by Ryan?

This, is narcissism not only gone wild, but really is bordering on detrimental not only to the Republicans, but how do the people of Minnesota in her district feel? This is what you want of your representative in Congress?

I know this next comment could border on offensive and outrageous, but as a psychiatrist it needs offered as a concern: when does narcissism become so out of control that it can border on dangerousness to others, when it involves a politician(s) who may give an impression they think, and then act, are larger than life?

This week it is a response to a State of the Union address. What happens if this is validated by no challenge by her Republican peers she advocates in future times for harsher rebuttals to Obama/Democrats policy/commentary that incite her base, because they see her commmentary as gospel? And this is not echoing the post shooting Tucson crap of 2 weeks ago, this is what she does now and how it is responded to henceforth!

Both parties have to rein in their extremist commentators, or risk being written off by the majority moderate indepedent voters as beyond irrelevant, but just floridly detrimental to the well being of this country!

And guess what Tea Party supporters, you are judged by the company you keep, and if Congresswoman Bachman is out of line, she only diminishes and invalidates any legitimate efforts your groups' efforts have tried to make this past year. Good luck Tuesday night!

I can take care of myself (that's my conservative face), but I don't like faux populism, claims to channel the wishes of the founders or chest thumping disguising appeasement (that's my liberal face).

Yes, a stateswoman like Bachmann is too wonderful to be limited to Minnesota's frigid 6th congressional district. NO! She must spread her stupidity to rubes nationwide. We do need to find out who is the dumbest woman in the GOP! There is room for only THE ONE.

With Bachmann doing her own State of the Union speech and Palin introducing us, via video, to the Wasilla White House, the time has come.

We need to determine who is the stupidest woman in the GOP so we and the media can worship at only one alter. Multiple gods are a sin against Christianity after all.

We need to see a WWE sponsored "Bachmann vs Palin Greased Lady Wrestle Off". Celebrity refereed by Linda "kick to the cojones" McMahon and held in the perfect All American venue, the Houston Astrodome it would hold the nation off while the Republicans repeal health care and then start producing millions of jobs and eliminate the deficit. This may need to be very long and greasy match!

We need to hurry though before Rick Perry leads Texas to succession from the union. Otherwise I think our time has come for the nation to have clarity. Markets don't like uncertainty.

No need to. Sorry, but it's insane to think that someone with her record of crazy talk (OK, let's not call it "crazy"; let's be frank and accurate and "civil": NON-PRESIDENTIAL TALK) could be elected to any high office, much less the presidency.

It's so odd that people seem to think that all that video of all those exaggerated, strange, hyper-critical, hyper-partisan either will disappear or just don't matter to the majority of voters. Obama may have come out of nowhere, but there are relatively few "out-there" gaffs of his to haunt him. Reasonable people expect and accept a few off-tone statements, but only a FEW.

Palin and Bachmann have whole LIBRARIES of them. Americans are simply not stupid enough to want to be represented to the world and let into the future by individuals who do not present themselves or their statements in presidential ways.

When she was confronted by a reporter about her comment that an Obama aide said the 5M jobs would be lost because of the healthcare bill, something that never happened according to Fact Check. She refused to acknowledge her misspeak and ducked the question. 5M Jobs, gee Mr Orange Guy Boehner's lie is only 650K. To bad MN didn't lose a seat in the house, hers would have been the one to go.

The GOP has already kicked Bachmann to the curb. FYI, I like her replacement in the freshman class; easy on the eyes, and easy on the ears.

Is this the beginning of a new "conservative" party? A split between the Iron Age and the Bronze Age? If so, it will not go well for them. Ask Ross Perot.

"I need someone to tell me what is going on."

You mean like telling you what jerks the Supreme Court is to their face in the middle of the State of the Union for ALL citizens. Talk about low class moves, I don't care if you agree with the decision or not, calling them out at the State of the Union was classless. Not a campaign speech? For Obama it's the biggest campaign speech there is. And Bachman shouldn't be doing what she's doing. It's classless, as well, and shows disunity.

Does ANYONE doubt that Bachman will be the one to shout out a "you lie" comment this year? I'm sure she has already planned what sh'es going to say and I'm sure she's already practiced her

Please run for president. Please, God make it happen. Obama would probably carry 54 states running against her; states that won't come into the union for 100 years will vote for him now just because of her.

Here is another prime example of what wrong with the US today. The State of the Union is a speech to ALL Americans. It is not a campaign speech! It is OUR President speaking to ALL the people. If this type of behavior continues, I foresee the State of the Union speech going away. I don't need someone giving their opinions, I need someone to tell me what is going on. So, please, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
