Obama calls for spirit of bipartisanship to continue

By Scott Wilson

A week after the mass shooting in Arizona, President Obama called Saturday for members of Congress to bring the same spirit of unity they have shown in mourning to their work under the Capitol dome in the months ahead.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama recalled that in the days after the shooting, "one of the places we saw that sense of community on display was on the floor of Congress, where Gabby Giffords, who inspires us with her recovery, is deeply missed by her colleagues."

"One by one, representatives from all parts of the country and all points of view rose in common cause to honor Gabby and the other victims, and to reflect on our shared hopes for this country," Obama said. "As shrill and discordant as our politics can be at times, it was a moment that reminded us of who we really are -- and how much we depend on one another."

At times, Obama has used his weekly address to argue in favor of his political agenda and criticize Republicans for obstructing it. But like his remarks at the memorial service Wednesday for the victims of the Tucson shooting, Obama avoided partisanship, echoing his call for across-the-aisle unity as Congress prepares again to take up its work.

"We carry on because we have to," Obama said, listing restoring the economy, addressing the federal budget deficit, and improving security as some of the work ahead.

"So as business resumes, I look forward to working together in that same spirit of common cause with members of Congress from both parties -- because before we are Democrats or Republicans, we are Americans," he said. "And as we perform the work of this nation, my prayer is that we stay true to our words, and turn to those examples of heroism, and courage, and perseverance, to bring out the better in all of us."

Baloney. Only when the lefties need the Republicans to pass their leftist agenda, do they start spouting bi-partisanship. Remember, this community troublemaker said he didn't need Republicans and passed much behind closed doors. This uncivil, divisive, racist fool is evil and not to be trusted. Hurry up, 2012

Bipartisanship will occur when Obama/Democrats stop lying, meeting behind closed doors, slamming Bush & all the people who disagree with their agenda. Taking the microphone away from Pilosi would also help.

Obama was not interested in working together when Nancy P. was meeeting behing closed doors on Christmas to craft the obamacare bill that Americans did not want. Who knew what was in that bill? Obama didn't care about team work then, he, Nancy and Harry R. were bullies.

I like that message and interpret Obama to say, when the House and Senate repeal Obamasham, he will not veto.

Works for me!

Hey tea partiers call a spade a spade, people will respect you more!

The tea party owes its mere existence to Obama; if he had lost the tea party would not exist, they would still be sitting on their couch watching their world go by.

What happen? A Black man got elected to the highest office in the World. That made them mad so they took to the streets, now they are hiding behind the falsehood of being tired of big government, tired of higher taxes, death panel health care and the ballooning deficit; all intelligent people know this man did not create the economical down spin of this country, the country was in free fall when he took office. So call a spade a spade, when you stand up and do that people will respect your opinion more.

20% of the tea party dislikes Obama simply because he is Black. That 20% called a spade a spade.

I am so glad to see the masses posting on here, feel as I do. All I have to say is there better be NO bipartisonship with anything this scummy, lying, Socialistic and Communist administration offers. The way I see it,
the fight is just beginning!! Our country has never been so divided until Obamalamawamajama, Pelosi and Reid showed up.
Hopefully the newer congress will pass a law against passing a law that has never been read by the Congress. I just hope and pray that we will be able to make it until the 2012 elections. If we do, hopefully we can eliminate a greater number of these idiots and socialists!
Meanwhile Obum, Keep making your photo ops and lie filled speeches, you are only convincing yourself and your sheeple. We BOOMERS know a liar and now truly recognize a Communist. SEE YOU AT THE POLLS IN 2012!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Washington Post! Good story on the one term double crossing fool Odumbo. Panders to the lower middle class to get elected. Then calls them deadbeats once in office. The epitome of the hypocrisy in Washington. Hopefully we the people are fed up with the political rhetoric and then doing as they wish behind our backs. Either or both political party is equally guilty. I (yes I have witnesses and documentation) predicted this financial crisis back in 1975 based on the unchecked greed of our elected officials and their cohorts in crime rich bankers, corporate leaders, and selfish unions! And nothing has changed. Both parties have had the majority and the power but we the people continue to get the worst of it. Corporation declares bankruptcy and the employee pension fund pays the executives golden parachute. The rich executives walk away with tens of millions in their pocket and employees of twenty to thirty years get Social Security. If an individual declares bankruptcy they can not include student loans, association fees, tax liens, and a myriad of other exclusions. Wonder who had the power when these corrupt laws were written!

Funny (scary) how the tragic death of a nine year old child can wake up the sheeple! And thus bring out the sympathy press machine, papers to be sold, money to be made, greed is good! Just watch all the politicians bask in the national media. As a father and a grandfather I can not even begin to grasp the pain this family is going through. Do they really need a media circus? Even the idiots at Westburro church were wise enough to back off this event, realizing the backlash would destroy them. Guess even these fools are smarter than Obama and the other media hogs grabbing a photo op at the expense of a small child, who actually believed politicians cared about we the people!
Let us never forget little wonderful Christina Green! Let us create a reform bill in her honor. Campaign funds revert back to the people and not a retirement fund for the greedy politicians. End the vote for sale politics that is so common today. End we the people being ignored by our representatives who represent the one with the most cash per vote! Let us end the frustration of we the people who elect based on promises that never materialize. Let us make the Christina Green bill a reality. A bill that will return the Federal government back to the people! Well Obama all talk and no action! I throw the gauntlet at you feet.

Posted by: MickPatriot1 | January 15, 2011 2:01 PM | Report abuse

I would just like Obama to address one campaign promise. He has not done one thing for the unemployed and dieing middle class except call us "deadbeats". Oh and tell us it is a global economy so we have to get by with less. Does this mean Congress and the President are taking pay cuts as well or is he just another double-crossing politician? Of course he is ignoring we the people while he grabs every dollar he can. How much money is in his campaign fund now? Before he was elected most came from the lower middle class he now calls deadbeats! He has plenty of our tax money to help out the rich who moved jobs overseas verses hiring in the U.S. And of course had a few million left over to stash in his campaign coffers. No this greedy back stabbing lying politician needs to go!
Everyone now sing the refrain: Obama lama ding dong gone! Obama ain’t got a clue! Obama double crosses the middle class! Obama lama ding dong gone!

I agree wholeheartedly with our leaders on both sides who have called for civilized discourse rather that the toxic, name-calling "discourse" to which we have sadly become accustomed.

The World is seeing Obama for what he is. The only way to beat obama is to Deny him. obama, His words describe him, He is a False Hope, If you listen to him you will love him. He carries a Bow without an Arrow. He will conquer all through his speech, his false hoods will capture all who sit and listen to him. The False one. Obama is without a doubt the Anti-Christ. The end is near if you keep following the lawless one. Deny Obama and you will Destroy him. A Lie is what you love.
2 Thessalonians 2:11-12
11And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Was it not Obama who just told the nation that politics had nothing to do with this shooting and it should not be linked? Was it not Obama who has stood by for two years as his team joyfully shut out republicans from the discourse in the House and Senate and now calls for bipartisanship to continue? Was it not Obama who has assigned blame to everyone who doesn't agree with his agenda and has reveled in name calling himself? Is it not his party who within two hours rushed to judgment for political gain and now when anyone says anything calls out how uncivil they are?
His calls and his party's rhetoric are hypocritical, opportunistic and totally so unbelievable as to their sincerity it is laughable.

Wasn't it Obama who said elections have consequences to McCain and that he won, you lost? Well I suppose he has to learn that the people spoke in the last election and they won and Obama lost. He better get used to following his own advise or he appears more hypocritical than he already is. But then again the media will carry the same tone no matter what since they must stand up and defend the one they had such a big part in making sure he was elected.

Finally will this be the end of all the writers here who write article after article against people who don't agree with the liberal policies and call them out as being racists and bigots? Will the WP look at how they write or is this something that will only be used against republicans and independent who now must be bipartisan towards the democrats while they have all been ignored for the past 2 years?

We do need to raise the level of discourse. Pro liberty groups that oppose the Federal Reserve, question 911, oppose the patriot act and the wars need to not be censored and constantly lied about in the news and treated with vitriol. And worse pundits are blaming these causes on a totally non political schizophrenic, who stalked someone for two years then opened fire. If "discourse" means stop criticizing bad policies, I'm sorry the people are fed up and no political stunts exploited the dead are going to help.

Posted by: Fivel | January 15, 2011 9:56 AM | Report abuse

How is a shooting by a schizophrenic who hated politics and didn't watch the news relevant to the proceedings in congress. Answer- it is not. But that doesn't stop Barry from "not letting a crisis go to waste".
Congress at such a low approval wishes we would be kinder in our criticism. Sorry it's not going to happen. The people are kicking political butt and taking names. First the Federal Reserve will be audited, then that unconstitutional monstrosity of a health care takeover. Hopefully we'll repeal the patriot act and end these ridiculous 4 wars. Sorry Washington, the constitution is coming. If you stand in the way, it won't be kind or gentle to your political careers. And these shameless political stunts aren't working either. They make you look scared and desperate, which you probably are!

Amazed by the comments here vilifying the President for lack of bipartisanship. Surely the party of NO has resisted every attempt at compromise...promising to negotiate then pulling the rug out from under the President and the Democrats. It is bullying at its core definition and there are those of use that are dang sick of it. Get something done to help the people of America get back on their feet and start to compete again. I for one think what the President has been able to do...like get some help for the auto industry and right that ship, has been positive and he did it with no help from the Republican naysayers. I read an article yesterday that China will pass us as the No. 1 world economic power in 10 years. While politicans bicker about how not to spend money uplifting education and science and math...y'all better learn how to speak a little Chinese.

What spirit of bipatisanship? The one in Obama's mind? This is the same man who said he was passing his healthcare bill and could do it because he won. Forget any fair airing of the bill. Obama also said the Republican's had to sit in the back (How racist is that?). Now that his campaign for 2012 is in full gear let us not practice freedom of speech in criticism of Obama's policies as that would cause all sorts of crazies to commit murder according to Obama's minions. Nice try, Obama. But we are basing our comments on what you do not what you say. And what you have been doing is very bad for this country.
