Obama's motorcade plows through D.C. (photos)

By Emi Kolawole

Updated 5:43 p.m.:

If your commute was bad heading into and out of Washington, D.C. Wednesday, you can take comfort in the fact that the President of the United States was slogging through it too.

We spoke with a photographer on the scene, the Associated Press's Carolyn Kaster (her photographs are featured below), who was in the motorcade as it made its way through the city.

"It looked really crazy, but we were generally moving two miles an hour. ...It wasn't as frenetic as you'd think it might be."

"People had their seat belts on," she said. "I must say the sergant who drove the car was very good."

President Obama arrived from his trip to Wisconsin Wednesday in the midst of the snow storm that clobbered the nation's capitol and, like many Washingtonians, struggled to get home. The Associated Press reports that the weather grounded Marine One, the helicopter the president usually uses to get from Andrews Air Force Base to the White House.

The motorcade, which contains a series of heavily armored sports utility vehicles, ambulances and "The Beast" (the specially equipped presidential limousine), slogged through the slushee-like mixture, sliding past stranded commuters in the wake of a fast-moving snow plow.  It usually takes the President 20 minutes to travel from the base to the White House. According to the AP, vans containing the press corps were temporarily separated from the president's main motorcade.

Generally streets are cleared of parked cars prior to the President's motorcade making its way just about anywhere. But, given the circumstances, snow-slogged cars lined the street as the President went by, and photographers accompanying Obama were able to snap these photos. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said streets were not cleared because Secret Service did not want to divert resources from dealing with the storm in other areas of the District.  Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan confirmed that the president and everyone in his motorcade arrived at the White House safely.

Were you in the path of the motorcade? We know it's a long shot, but let us know what you saw. We'll be following along with #dcsnowday on twitter for those who care to post their experiences and photos.

Correction: The original version of this post referred to the president's limousine as "The Tank," the nickname is actually "The Beast." Hat tip to commenter "capeck."

Isn't wearing seat belts the law?

Uh... topgun97365, those aren't people pulled over for the motorcade, those are some of the thousands of cars stuck on the road. They'd be there anyway!

My gawd... Please tell me, we Bush Non-lovers weren't this crazy.

The president's limousine is nicknamed "the beast," not "the tank."

Do WAPO writers even live in the DC metro area these days??? Amateurs.

SherryKay2004...you are a moron. Is it really that difficult to enjoy a fun, interesting story without making a gratuitous political comment. I don't care if you're a republican or a democrat...it's people like you who are tainting our country. I hope you don't have electricity and your godforsaken house is the last one PEPCO attends to. GO CAPS

I am going to run for the office in 2012. I will have my own plow clearing the way for me next time it snows, rather then sit for 7 hours on Connecticut Ave.. :)

Just think of the extra mess they made by using their emergency lights. You can see where the traffic was being forced over which just added to the gridlock. Obama should have stayed at the airforce base.

Why doesn't he show us his flinty toughness by going out and shoveling a sidewalk or two around the White House.

I will give him credit for not diverting snow plows. One time I was driving down 270 in a snow storm and there were all sorts of plows sitting on the side of the highway doing nothing. They were waiting to plow the highway just before George W. Bush came back from Camp David in a motorcade. The rest of us had to drive on the unplowed highway.

So,surely this cannot be right? How can even a blizzard stop our glorius leader and
Messiah Barack Hussein Obama this way?....
How come Messiah Obama couldn't sprinkle
his pixie dust and read magic words from his teleprompters and make all the snow
and slush just disappear and the sun shine
bightly? So what kind of a Messiah is he?
