Sarah Palin responds to Arizona shooting: 'I hate violence'

By Rachel Weiner

Rightly or wrongly, Sarah Palin has been thrust into the debate over political rhetoric in the wake of the tragic shooting in Tucson. Now, she's weighed in briefly through an e-mail to Fox News personality Glenn Beck.

"I hate violence. I hate war. Our children will not have peace if politicos just capitalize on this to succeed in portraying anyone as inciting terror and violence. Thanks for all you do to send the message of truth and love and God as the answer," Palin said, according to Beck. Via the Right Scoop:

Until Monday Palin stayed out of the political conversation over the shooting, referencing the attack only in a short Facebook post offering condolences. That post has garnered almost 10,000 comments. On Sunday, Facebook marketing director Randi Zuckerberg said the top question on the site that day was "Is Sarah Palin to blame?" However, Palin's staff was reacting. Her Web site featuring a map showing Giffords in crosshairs was taken off the internet. Aide Rebecca Mansour went on the radio to defend that campaign, arguing that the crosshairs were "surveyor's symbols."

Giffords herself criticized Palin's map in an MSNBC appearance last year. "When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," she said.

Of course Sarah Palin is to blame! Glenn Beck is to blame! After a decade of attacking differing political viewpoints they even have a new term for Beck's style of vitriol. they call it being "Becked" to death!

Will it change the face of politics? I doubt it because it accomplished exactly the desired results; they used words to pull the trigger on a political rival. Why go through the trouble of setting up an assassination and risking discovery when all you have to do is keep talking and let some unhinged listener do the job for you?

Hitler's Chief of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels said "a lie is always easier to believe than the truth". The American people are living proof that principle is true because they continue to listen and believe Fox News over and over every night of the week and they listen to Beck like he was the biggest expert in the world and Beck worships the ground Sarah Palin walks on!

Now that the American people have voted Tea-Party members into Congress on the rantings of Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly I can only wonder if many of them now have regrets about listening to these panderers of re-written history and lies?

If you want to see the true face of American conservative politics then look deep into the eyes of Jared Loughner because he represents the outcome of failed conservative policies, lack of adequate low-cost or free public mental health and health care facilities, and mind full of seething conservative hatred toward those trying to solve the problems that led him to pulling the trigger on all those people, especially on that innocent little 9 year-old, Christine Green.

All this was stirred by chef's Glenn Beck on his blackboard and on Sarah Palin's gun sight graphic and by Gabrielle Gifford's 2010 Republican opponent, Jesse Kelly, handing out M-16's to shoot at targets at a rally to defeat her re-election.

I'm not making any of this up. These are all facts and you can look this up for yourself. I know the conservatives reading this will jump on this and start thrashing me wildly and calling me unfair and hateful but nothing I've said here is as hateful as the vitriol that spews out of the mouthes of Beck, Palin, O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh or Cindy Jacobs (the Christian fundamentalist who seems bent on blaming the Arkansas bird deaths on the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell and thereby viscously blaming hatefully another thing on the LGBT community! So go ahead and attack and prove me right once again. Not one of you hard-line conservatives can resist calling the kettle black, can you? Quick to chastise and you never apologize because you apologize because in your minds you're infallible.

So I challenge the conservative community: Where does the hate stop? When do you stop blaming everyone else for your issues and problems?

Sarah Palin ALONE and only Sarah Palin, distributed a hit list with cross hairs targeting not only the districts these Democrats are in, but their names listed next to the map as well, including Gabrielle Gifford's name. Sarah Palin is the only one who did this and her alone. A U.S. map complete with cross hairs targeting the offices complete with the names of real live human beings including a woman on that hit list who has now been in fact targeted and SHOT for real. Sarah Palin is inciting and encouraging Domestic TERRORISM with her big ignorant mouth and her sick cross hairs imagery which she finally now has gotten the kind of results Gabrielle Giffords WARNED about when she saw that very same map during a recent interview. Palin is guilty of Domestic Terrorism and should be jailed and investigated immediately. If that map were distributed by an average Joe that person would now be in custody under serious questioning.

HR 3162 SEC. 802 DEFINITION OF DOMESTIC TERRORISM

Palin Cross Hairs Map - Palin, GUILTY.

(4) by adding at the end the following:

`(5) the term `domestic terrorism' means activities that--

`(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;

`(B) appear to be intended--

`(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;

`(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion;

Sarah Palin is a prime example of what happens when IGNORANCE GETS AN AUDIANCE. Unfortunately, she was too stupid to know when to quit. Due to Sarah’s "popularity", other wannabees like Limbaugh, Baughmann and Beck have found a platform to attach their racist ideologies too. Sarah Palin and her band of haters have nothing to bring to the table in the America we are trying to build. Unfortunately, due to her blatant disrespect for our President and elected officials, heightened destructive rhetoric and innuendo that it will take arms to "take back her America", people were massacred this weekend. This should definitely be called the Sarah Palin Massacre. She got the gun; she primed the scope, and held it steadily trained on our government officials. But she was too much of a coward to pull the trigger herself; instead, she incited someone with lesser intelligence than her to pull the trigger. Blood is on your hands Sarah and you can't wash it off with more of your rhetoric.

Extremist justifications and equivocations of crude fact, both deprive the public of the valuable opinion of law enforcement.

The - criticisms and -reinforcement of doubts - connected to the trained observation and witness, as well as the experienced and responsible statements of peace officers (the Sheriff)... as though the factual circumstances and professional courtesy which also served to defend Sarah,... - was illicit -.

I object to the media intensity and focused criticism of law enforcements obligation to keep the peace. These media salesmen and tail-between-the-leg reporters occupy a realm of dependency on obscenity and rancor, subversive to the interest of any realistic thinker.

Think more cautiously about the reality subsequent to the bashing and atheist motivated doubt-mongering that Communism and anti-establishment agitation feeds on among unhappy people.

The decision to bring to bear the rights of individuals and the demand of self-defense to the interest of those rights, includes the encouragement to resist and endure conflict,...

Bring to the fight for freedom, to love another, and choose our friends accordingly, the plan to defend yourselves and your rights...

with all the intensity and willingness you can muster,

suggesting these maps of the trouble and covered agitation campaigns was inappropriate, is just fat wrong.

If Sarah Palin was indeed sincere about this I do not believe she would have one of her aides to float a revisionist interpretation about her "bullseyes" list icons after taking this map off her website.

And as a person who fancies themselves an international leader (which the office of the POTUS is) she would not have used an email correspondence with one talking head to make such a statement.

As the post by Americana1 pointed out, this is just more of the same from Palin. As I posted previously, Palin created a political brand that is now a brand she does not want to own.

I can only hope for the day that the media doesn't give people like Sarah Palin the time of day to spread her completely illogical brain farts.

I wonder how many of you anti hunters had a meat product for lunch or dinner. Just because you don't have the intestinal fortitude to kill your own food doesn't mean someone didn't do it for you. My Grandfather was a butcher. Was he any more violent then the customer who tore the flesh apart with their teeth? And to all you vegans out there, do you live in a house with drywall? Do you drive on a street made of asphalt? If so you use animal products. Hows that soy burger? You do know that the number one reason for deforestation in the world is agriculture don't you? Number one most versatile crop? Soy beans of course. We are what we are people. Why not except it and quit tearing down people just because they don't believe in or behave like you.

By the way how many cattle farms have you ever heard of in Alaska? You want red meat somebody has to shoot it.

She should stick to putting some hapless caribou in her crosshairs - if that. I don't really like the idea of hunting for sport. She can't even admit she made a mistake when she put gun sights on those congressional districts. Now she says they were surveyor marks or something. Riiiight.

This guy is nuts plain and simple.

If you want to look at and blame a map how about the map put out in 2004 by the democratic Leadership Committee that has not cross hairs but multicolored targets. The map says Targeting Strategy, Behind enemy lines and talks about Ripe Targets for Democrats. Then there's the map from a year ago from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Commitee with Bullseyes that represent "targeted Republicans"

If you want to shut down the so called Hate Speech maybe we should start with the moron in the White House that refers to half the people in this country as "The Enemy" and talks of bringing a gun to a knife fight. Or how about the "their going to have to ride in the back seat" comment. What a racist remark.

Oh by the way we use the same symbol in the printing business that Palin used and it's called a registration mark. It is used to align colors or to target a specific item. Oops I said target hope it doesn't kill anyone.

As some posters have pointed out, the discrepancy between what Palin says and what Palin does calls the sincerity of her comments into question. For one, the comments are in an email--she's not even willing to say these words to the nation in front of a camera. Judge for yourselves what that says about the content of her character.

I turn to the email's text, then:

"I hate violence. I hate war. Our children will not have peace if politicos just capitalize on this to succeed in portraying anyone as inciting terror and violence. Thanks for all you do to send the message of truth and love and God as the answer."

Palin's demonizing strategy is even present as she disavows violence. She refers to herself as "anyone"--an interesting choice--since the connection between the shooting and the violent language is directly to her as per Giffords, and Giffords' own father, who publicly stated when asked if his daughter had any enemies, "Yes, the Tea Party." The impersonality of the indefinite pronoun reflects no humility, no contrition, no horror at the *fact* that as Giffords herself pointed out, Palin had put her on a target list with the infamous crosshairs map.

Sarah remains defiant as ever, and as angry as ever, despite the horrific loss of life and violent that is--whether we want to admit it or not--linked to the vitriol. The demonizing logic of the email casts any critic of Palin, including Giffords herself, as one of the "politicos." The "us vs. them" logic also underpins thousands of posters who rather than reflect on whether it is really a good idea to carry guns to public rallies, or whether it is appropriate for a candidate for office such as Giffords' opponent, Kelley to invite his "warriors" to "take out" Giffords and shoot an M16, resort, like Palin, to casting their critics in the light of bad faith--those who "capitalize" on this crisis--and who represent a threat to "our children."

Let us remember Giffords every time Sarah Palin speaks.

I knew that Sarah Palin hates violence. I could see it from the tears in her eyes as she attempted to shoot those Russian wolves that were invading across the Bering Strait. I felt her pain as she clubbed those little seals to death as they tried a sneak attack from the sea. And what about those attack elk? She was just a mama grizzly trying to protect her camera crew!

Face it, Sarah Palain is the worst type of trailer trash. The type who screams rape when the plumber won't respond to her open legs, then pretends to cry when the plumber is lynched.

She needs to be arrested for her actions. She is entitled to her day in court, but no more. I hope that we have seen the end of her.

Apparently these right-wing-nuts don't even know that Hitler was a right-wing- nut. They don't know the difference between socialism and fascism. Pathetic. (Not even addressing the child murder-supporting insanity of the quoted post.)

Owning more weapons (guns for the non-military) than is needed for collections, I can see also. But how do you answer to the angry rhetoric that you have used in the past to attain your goals? "The type of hunting Palin engages in is to supply her family with meat, an Alaskan tradition, a cultural thing for Alaskans."

I would agree, if she were a better shot and knew that a shotgun would kick.

Palin, it is worth noting, did use enough cartridges to kill five caribou during her hunt, but most of her shots missed the smallish cow at which she was shooting.

Anybody with any knowledge of big-game rifle hunting would never hunt a large bodied game animal like a caribou with a .22 caliber round. Not with so many far better choices of caliber and ballistics readily available. Or go in the field with a rifle you hadn’t personally fired and verified its zero.

And the proverbial neophyte question “Does it kick?”… If that’s what you’re worried about when you’re about to pull down on a big friggin’ caribou, well, maybe you shouldn’t be out trying to shoot a large animal in the first place until you’ve spent some quality trigger time behind the stock of a rifle firing real rounds downrange. Besides, in the adrenalin rush of the moment of trigger pull with your animal in the crosshairs, you usually never feel any kick anyway.

To the one who said- ENOUGH! To you I say-ENOUGH! It's uber-partisans like you who are responsible for the fact that we can't have civil political discourse.

It's idiots like you and the rest of the jack-booted minions blathering out the left wing Gestapo's talking points who are equally responsible for the corrosive over the top rhetoric.

Why can't Sarah Palin simply say; I am horrified at the events in Tucson Arizona. My heart goes out to the families of those who died and I pray for the complete recovery of Congresswoman Giffords and all the injured. I too believe that we need to be careful about what we say and how it impacts people. I call on every leader to calm the rhetoric which I will also strive to do.

We can't stifle debate but we can make sure that we engage in civil discourse as we debate our difference.

It would actually humanize her and turn her into a leader- but then I guess that is hoping for too much.

For the people using the title of Governor for Palin, she does not deserve that title. She is a quitter. Call her "Reality TV star, Sarah Palin". That would be more fitting.

Secondly, publicizing that you shoot wild animals from a helicopter and claiming to "hate violence" is a contradiction.

And before you accuse me of being a "liberal", I am a Republican, but one who refuses to vote for someone like Palin. She represents the wrong direction for the party to take.

If Harpie Palin hates violence, why does she go out of her way to incite it? Crosshairs in the context Palin uses them are not part of surveyor's tool.

So Sarah hates violence, except when it's clubbing a haddock to death, shooting a caribou, or hunting wolves from a helicopter?

That snipe aside:

Blaming this on Sarah Palin is going too far. However, she and her ilk on both sides of the partisan divide have ratcheted up the rhetoric to the point that the violence in the air is almost palpable--and you'd be hard-pressed to claim there is equal blame for this between liberals and conservatives.

This is the sort of "there are two equal sides" silliness the media seems trained to present. Conservative-leaning talking heads are far more numerous, and more vociferously inflammatory, than liberal-leaning ones.

Sarah Palin has spent almost every waking moment since Senator McCain gave her a national platform building her brand. Now she wants to remake her brand? Wake up Sarah. You own the brand you made.

Constantly you have created images of an attacking pitbull, mama grizzlies attacking, shooting guns in Iraq, your maps and bullseyes and reload soundbites, your silent endorsement of second amendment solutions, and your gun toting TV episode (in which you could not even work the bolt on your rifle but creating the image of you holding a rifle (that you didn't even carry---what kind of hunter doesn't carry their own rifle?)

You built this brand now you don't want it? Oh well, it doesn't work that way in the real world. The "lamestream" media gave you a pass on all this because you enabled them to sell advertising. Now your brand is a product liability. Hopefully you can provide a living in Alaska for yourself (without the charted planes, helicopters, and lavish motorhomes your series paid for)

You wanted and built this brand. You own it.

Has anyone, anywhere, investigating the shooter of Congresswoman Gifford, found any link between him and his visiting Sarah Palin's website? Is there anyone who has proof that the website provoked him to go and shoot the congresswoman?

So far, plenty of people have claimed this man was a lunatic. He was psychotic and had a personal vendetta against Gifford. This shooters friends and classmates describe him as a "left wing pothead".

This politicizing of this incident is going to back fire on the people who are engaging in it. I watch Fox News often, and I've NEVER seen anyone defend or promote violence at all. To disagree with politicians, is not to condone violence against them. Reporting unpopular stories about politicians isn't promoting violence against them. There is hardly a thing said on Fox News that could make a mentally unstable person resort to violence.

Hunting is not violence. The type of hunting Palin engages in is to supply her family with meat, an Alaskan tradition, a cultural thing for Alaskans. Being a hunter doesn't make you a person who advocates violence against HUMAN BEINGS.

The majority of the comments I'm seeing here are very inflammatory against Sarah Palin, without really having heard the woman speak. That is my guess. I also doubt many have actually watched Fox news much, but are taking someone else's opinion on them promoting violence and vitriol, which is not what they do. They disagree with politicians, which is NOT promoting violence.

Civil disagreement is the foundation of this country and people who are inflaming this shooting into a left vs right, dem vs rep are doing a disservice to this country and our democratic way of government.

Even if Palin's crosshairs map had nothing to do with the shooter, she's a nitwit if she thinks it hasn't added to the vitriolic political atmosphere (she's a nitwit anyway).

But I do have to ask, why did Palin have her map pulled down off her Facebook page on Saturday? Why did her spokesperson, Mansour, actually lie about the crosshairs over the weekend? She said that they were "surveyor's symbols." Give me a break. When that map first came out, there were many who complained about it, including conservatives. Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who apparently is a big Palin supporter, said on "The View" that Palin's map was "despicable." Did anyone in Palin's camp back then claim that these were only "surveyor's symbols?"
Gabrielle Giffords herself warned that the map would have consequences. She knew what implications a map like that could have.
Mansour lied about those crosshairs being "surveyor's symbols," and I really wonder why she did so.

While I expect to called a leftist liberal for my opinions, there are many cogent reasons for my belief that Sarah Palin should not be in politics today. Regardless of whether her foolhardy map incited violence or not, there is no credible way that she can say that she doesn't condone violence. She demonstrates a relish in killing animals on her "reality" show and uses common references to gun use in her publicity. It's time for Sarah and everyone else to behave like mature adults with respect for one another. I know that the US can behave in a civilized manner.

Sarah Palin suffers from the same disorder that effects most members of the right's political and media establishment: an inability to be governed by objective realty. So she just changes the facts to match up to her perverted view of life. I don't believe for one minute that she hates violence. She just thinks that sounds good at the moment.

You are the ones enabling the Markos Moutilsas (who also had the same type of imagery on his website) and the Keith Olbermanns in their non-stop two year smear campaign against Gov. Palin.

You are the reason we cannot have a civil political conversation- not Sarah Palin.

You are the reason that this country's political discourse has devolved into a toxic stew of bitter rhetoric- not Sarah Palin.

You are the ones who condone the left-wing McCarthyist tactics being used to tear down Gov. Palin.

You are the ones who ought to be ashamed of themselves for using the Giffords shooting to further your own political agenda. Shame on you.

While she may not have had a violent intent, what message does she think she's putting forward? Surely, she could have used a different metaphor if she had different intentions. I don't think Sarah is to blame for some nutjob having done what he did but, as many have said, she's a grown up who should have understood that as popular as she is, she needs to be careful about how she delivers her message. I remember seeing gun show dealers with red flags, with yellow Russian Sickles and "Clinton" emblazoned on them, brass knuckles being sold "legally" to anyone with cash as "paper weights", and a middle-aged man wearing a beret and camouflage paramilitary clothing showing a VHS tape and explaining how to convert a 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun into a BELT FED 12 gauge machine gun with bipod. THOSE are the kind of nuts that represent the extremists among the NRA. I was a member until Bush Sr., dropped out because of some NRA members who sympathized with the Oklahoma bomber!
That was in Houston, Texas while Clinton was President.
I do not intend this as “hate” mail. I have been an avid weapons collector for years, and enjoyed the hunters and antique Kentucky Rifle beauties ay gunshows. Here, I have described the LAST Houston gun show that I attended (no cameras allowed), “Waco David” was there, and us old timers were being rapidly replaced by paramilitary types of far righters.

Unfortunately, the CONTINUOUS rhetoric from demagogs (especially Fox News) is exactly the sort of "violence" message crap that stirs NRA "unregulated" militia nuts up.

It is Astounding that people like Beck, Palin and O'Reilly can actually pretend that they bear no responsibility in the current appearance of automatic weapons at Town Hall Meetings, and slaughter of INNOCENTS.
